I have to disagree about Begich being a statesman. So far, he has not disagreed with any Obama or Democrat idea. Begich is not representing Alaska, but is representing Obama and the Democrats. I hope he gets a spine, but considering how he left Anchorage, I doubt that he will. He's VERY disappointing as an Alaska senator!!

<strong><em>He has actually disagreed with President Obama on many things. Benefits to members of the AK Territorial Guard which he helped to reinstate, funding for AK military installations, and he is not in favor of single payer health care. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Not saying thest things are all necessarily good or bad, but you might want to visit the Senator's website and do a little research. And he is actually a Democrat, and the people of Alaska elected him, so not sure I get your point. AKM

Afghanistan is a quagmire. We need to get out ASAP. I am fed up with war. Afghanistan NEVER attacked us, Iraq NEVER attacked us, and the hijackers who flew planes into 2 skyscrapers in my city were Saudis. As Keith Olbermann would say, WTF?

@4 gizmo, @5 Polly,

Co-sign. We can only hope that Obama proves to be smarter than LBJ.

The US is very powerful, but we do not have the power to jerk 30M people out of the Middle Ages.

I'm still iffy about Mark. What I'd like to see him do is trade some really progressive votes for some substantial Alaskan moolah. (I know, I'm a traditionalist).

I continue to believe that his best course to re-election is to be perceived as a source of Federal largesse. And, in the present environment, he can do that and still be a real Democrat, if he's willing to take a few chances.

I agree with Gizmo. I'm a former wife of a husband in the Army from those Vietnam draft days, and afterwards met too many men who returned and told their stories. Not good.
---
OT, on another note, regarding Begich's successor, Sullivan. Sully vetoed the Assembly's budget??

Glad that Begich is in Washington, he's a good guy.

But going deeper into Afghanistan is going to be the undoing of Obama and the Democratic Party, and Begich ought to standing up to the President on this issue. We're $12 trillion in the hole, our healthcare system is a mess, our children isn't learning, unemployment is over 10%, and we're going to ratchet up a war in a country on the other side of the globe that has made a fool of every imperial power that has ever tried to mess with it? I'm a Vietnam vet with a very bad feeling about Afghanistan. This is not going to have a happy ending, and when we retreat in shame and defeat we're all going to be wondering how we could have been so stupid.
