Boots on the Ground – Palin in Rochester, NY

Here’s a quick “boots on the ground” report from Mudflatter barracuda78 who attended the demonstration outside the Sarah Palin book signing event in Rochester, NY. Anyone else out there attending an event, don’t forget to email pictures and write-ups! Thanks barracuda78! Now that’s a barracuda we can believe in! *wink*  More to come soon.

We never saw Sarah. She musta snuck in the back door.

Some of the chants by protesters:

Keep your rosaries off my ovaries; Keep your theology off my biology!
Women must decide their fate; not the church! not the state!
Racist, sexist, anti-gay; right wing bigots go away!
RACIST ,SEXIST, ANTI GAY, SARAH PALIN GO AWAY!

There were probably, if we use Fox News’ method of numbers present 1.25 billion people. Did I say billion? I mean 125 protesters.

Alot of the demonstrators were elitist college students from University of Rochester where they conduct medical research using the dreaded fruit fly(remember SP”S press conference about the fruit fly)and Rochester Institute of Technology.  I was quite happy with the protest…

There were words thrown between the two crowds that were separated by police on foot and on horses. We were also told to stand in certain areas. After leaving the demonstration, I drove around the corner to the back of a gas station.  Still no bus, but plenty of police cars.

I mentioned Mudflats and told them wonderful stories about the Alaskan Bloggers.

There were a few palinistas who came over to the demonstrators and we had a few discussions where I demanded that they give exact examples of what they were talking about…one said if we cut taxes everyone would be able to afford health care..I said what taxes are you going to cut…he stumbled could give no tax cutting examples, I said are you gonna cut taxes to keep our roads safe, etc., etc., etc..?

One Palinista thought we should stop helping students go to college…I said oh so we can’t compete in the world…we are already behind other countries as far as college education….I told this Palinista that I run my own business and cannot afford health insurance. . I was a little p.o.’ed

    But, will the MSM show this or just more Palin fluff and Palin fans. This should at least get over to Huffpo where more people can see it. I am so disgusted with the media right now, I can even begin to express my anger
    for ignoring her lies and personal attacks in the book and just showing her adoring fans as if they represent the majority of Americans. They don’t.

    Great signs. I love the same same one mentioned above.

    Glad to see there weren’t just Sarah supporters there. Nice one, barracuda78.

    I thought she was going to her aunt’s house in Richland, WA for Thanksgiving? That’s the south central/east part of the state. A tad friendlier to Palin’s views than the west side of the state. It’s a pity she won’t be in the Seattle area – I’d love to go with the other mudpups in the area.

    Is she ever going to go back to Alaska? Or have y’all figured out how to bar the door to keep her out?

    I submitted this link to the ThinkProgress tip line, so maybe if they got enough hits on it, they’d run a story. On the opening page, just scroll down until you see the box on the right side.

    Sam Stein is getting more and more involved in doing write-ups about Palin on HuffPost. He was a little known reporter until POTUS called on him at one of the WH press briefings, and all larger media (like AP) got their noses out of joint because Sam was called on early in the briefing, before they were. Since then, Sam has become a regular on many talk/news shows. He’s good about responding to messages as well.

    When you are any page with his by-line, his email is right below his name and you can click on it and an email will open for you. Or just use this: stein@huffingtonpost.com

    I love their chant! I think I’ll put it into an email and send it along to all those who keep sending me things I don’t want.

    Just want to tell you a little story. I am Canadian, working for a Canadian company of course. Every now and then I deal with an American Company. Recently, I have been having a back and forth with a fellow from Chicago.

    The conversations were political, but today was the clincher. I thought he was joking and yanking my chain, but this seemingly intelligent business man, thinks that a Palin/Beck ticket is exactly what is needed for the US. Honestly I was stunned, and even wrote back and asked him if he was serious, and oh boy…is he.

    I gave him the web addresses for the Alaskan bloggers and I pray that he will read them. His reasoning made no sense. What the heck is going on? Where are all the nuts coming from?

    Excuse me. Wasn’t President Obama the one who recently paid respect to fallen soldiers? Bush wanted to hide these images and pretend these weren’t real people who were being killed.

    That video that’s all over the web of her supporters waiting in line while that young guy interviews them is alarming and hilarious at the same time. He asks them specific questions about Palin’s positions and none of them can name a single thing about where she stands on various issues.

    Funny, no one seemed interested in her book out here in Wasilla – not even the Obama critics. Saw some pictures, is she really carrying Trig around with no pants or socks on outside? Barefoot babies, especially with no pants on – outside- is pretty classless. Just sayin.

    I’m so glad people from “real America” stand out and protest this ridiculous woman – I hope she takes her money and leaves our Great State forever.

    She got roasted at the AGC dinner at the Captain Cook a couple of weeks ago (in a “don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya” kind of way).

    It was awesome. We really should see her as a gift – 30 years from now she’ll be credited for saving our Democracy by destroying the Republican party from the inside-out.

    This is about Sarah’s recent attack on President Obama that he hasn’t shown respect to our troops. This is a military man who says, He didn’t think that anything Palin said could shock him until he heard her say this.

    It’s a great piece and the photos are touching. Comment over there too to get coverage of this piece. It’s on the sidebar, but it needs to be a headliner.

    From Politico’s story on Palin’s latest attacks. Comments I read were NOT in Palin’s favor.

    Democratic National Committee Communications Director Brad Woodhouse responded: “It’s not surprising that someone who doesn’t know the difference between Iraq and Iran, whose outrageous claims on health reform have been repeatedly debunked and whose book has been called ‘fiction’ by members of her own party would get the facts wrong or, worse, simply lie on this.”

    “Just in the past four weeks the president has met with troops on bases in Jacksonville, Alaska and South Korea and the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M,” Woodhouse said. “While it’s not surprising that Sarah Palin will lie and ignore the facts to appeal to the right wing, tea party fringe of the Republican base, what is surprising it that anyone else would pay attention to what she has to say.”

    Rochester has always seemed like a civilized place to me, so I was surprised to hear it was a stop. Let me guess: the surrounding area has high unemployment and higher resentment of the elites at the universities and businesses in town?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Actually you’re spot on with the high unemployment although that has improved a little bit in recent years. Three major companies (Kodak, B&L, Xerox) employed the vast majority of the population throughout most of the 1900′s. Over the past 20 years or so, all three have laid off tens of thousands of employees. Yes, you read that right…in the 80s, Kodak employed over 60,000 people in Rochester alone. Less than 10,000 people work there now for a loss of 50,000 jobs in ONE company!
    Some other high tech companies have moved into the area, but can’t support the huge number of people let go from the ‘big three’. Our biggest employer now is the University of Rochester (and the hospital/medical school attached to it) and RIT is not far behind, so there is definitely an appreciation for education, although you couldn’t prove it by most of those waiting for autographs!
    We also have a remarkable amount of fine and performing arts for a small city so people do tend to be appreciative of things considered by Palinites as ‘elite’. I would guess that most of the people buying her book are likely from the suburbs (including mine, unfortunately!) and more rural areas in the surrounding counties, both of which lean to the right. The protestors, on the other hand, are probably students OR season ticket holders for the Rochester Broadway Theater League, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra or Garth Fagan Dance!
    Thanks, barracuda78, for braving a spectacle I just couldn’t face. Although if I’d know any mudpups were there, I might have stopped by to join the fun people with the signs!
    Yesterday was my 1st shopping day at my local Walmart since Going Rogue came out. As I normally take the back of store when crossing over from food side to health and beauty side, I steeled myself for passing by the end cap where new hardbacks are displayed, thinking I would have to look at multiple pictures of Palin on the book covers as I passed the end cap.
    From a distance, no Going Rogue in sight. Wondering, I am.
    Getting closer, still no Going Rogue in sight. Puzzled, I am.
    Closer still. Delighted, I am.
    Someone who obviously did not want to see the covers, had strategically placed darker cover DVD cases (from the adjacent electronics department) in front of each book–just the perfect size to cover all but the top part of the book cover! Priceless!!
    Sarah doesn’t support the military. If serving her country is so important, when did she serve?????? What military position did she hold? What volunteer service did she do? What about Todd? T. was shipped off to keep from causing more problems. Did she visit military installations as gov. prior to her son being shipped overseas, or were those visits to see her own kid! How much time did she spend at Elmdorf, or at the AK National Guard sites?
    Being a woman is no excuse in this day and age for not joining the military or doing volunteer service of any kind. But she hasn’t. Not even a community organizer. When you see the Palinistas, ask about her military service
    Ft. Hood is still recovering from an unspeakable tragedy. I’m shocked that you would allow a disruptive and divisive politician such as Mrs. Palin to bring her political circus to a place of mourning. Just today in an interview with Fox’s Greta Van Sustern, Palin accused the military’s Commander in Chief, President Obama, of not acknowledging or caring for the fighting troops. Absolutely false and inflammatory statement!!
    For a military personnel’s take on her comments, I invite you to read Captain Jon Soltz’s excellent post in which he elaborates the many ways that PO indeed has the welfare of our troops as a main priority: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jon-soltz/what-color-is-the-sky-in_b_369522.html
    In a time of war, does the military really think it’s in the best interests of the troops and the nation to appear to give support to a “political sniper” against our Commander in Chief by allowing her to conduct her borderline-treasonous political shenanigans on our bases???”
    This is all John McCain’s fault. Sarah President? People should think twice. If people from the other side will decide to stay home, instead of going to the voting booth, then just know that the stupid will slide in that chair.
    Result of that, expect world war 3, because SP had already said she will go to war with Russia, over Georgia, when she was running fo GOP VP. She will attack Iran, May be who knows what next, as she claims with her religion witches that she is God sent. 2012 will be the end of the world.
    I gota start packing my bags.
    AKM you can come with me. I will not leave you behind.
    Many, many thanks to all who have sent emails……and that was a fantastic letter Lee! I just hope they do reconsider. If you know of others who don’t follow this blog, but believe in treating our POTUS (and soldiers) fairly, you might want to encourage them to also send letters.
    Maybe we need to start sending messages to McCain and give him plenty of links. I really don’t believe he read Sarah’s book and I’m not surprised that he refuses to say anything against her. I do believe he realizes what a huge mistake he made, but whether he’ll ever admit it, or simply tell her to STFU, is questionable.
    Keith played a clip on Palin’s religion, the rapture, Israel, Billy Graham visit, and so forth. I think Howard Dean is covering it shortly also.
    Again – thanks for the letters!
    Thanks everyone for your comments of support…And thanks to AKM for putting this out there…
    I had a client tell me today that she heard on CNN that the Ms Palin’s book tour has changed things up due to the Rochester protests. I also heard there was some egg-throwin’ going on inside the event The story about covering up SP’s books at the store is great…we can all do little things like that, I thought about knocking some on the floor, there was no one around it would’ve been real easy to go rogue…time to turn the tables on the Queen.
    I found this protest by googling “protest for SP’s book signing in Rochester ny”…so this may help you if there’s a book signing near you…there are also anti-SP facebook pages
    I quess I’m feeling a sense of frustration and loss in a lackof national leaders coming out and pushing back against SP…where are the Gloria Steinems, ,Jesse Jackson’s of the world?
    I have to catch up on all the other craziness everyone is talking about. Have a good evening and a Happy Thanksgiving
    I just came from an out of town Costco today. There were lots ( and I mean a bonfire’s worth) of Palin books there along with Glen Beck’s book. Actually, there were also boxes and boxes of them. Nobody was looking at them, however. I stood there observing for a bit and watched quite a few carts go by. Nope, no Palin or Beck books in the carts. When I finally went to check out, I checked the people in my line and nearby lines. Nope no Palin or Beck books. Finally, one elderly lady came up with Palin’s book in her cart. One. Yep, that was it. One.
    As someone who studied at the University of Rochester, I give a big digital (pun intended) high five to all those socialist, liberal, hippie students. I wish there were more protesters like them. I know that many people advocate simply ignoring Palin, but in the absence of dissenting views, the crowds of brain-dead sheeple appear to be more significant statistically than they actually are. If Palin and her attendant media faced such crowds at every stop, she would begin to seem even sillier and more unimportant to everyone.
    Students at both those schools would be far too smart to be taken in by Palin’s imbecilic platitudes. How any sentient being with a fully functioning frontal lobe could find her even remotely credible is beyond me.
    I did the same thing at my very own Costco in Anchorage on Dimond. I appeared to be shopping for cameras, but I was really monitoring the giant box that had Sarah’s books piled up high. No takers during my 30 minute “camera shopping” experience. Three days later the pile of books was still as high as ever.
    Costco shoppers are far too savvy for Sarah.
    Stop. Stop.
    Delighted to to see some upchuck from Rochester, which I have always considered to be sort of a reality-based area. Hmm, “upchuck”, as in, perhaps “Shut Up, Chuck”?
    You know, I think I may be decohering. Sorry. Bye.
    One happy note—-Katie Couric (sp) was invited to the State Dinner at the white house tonight. I am sure this will make MS P happy!!!!!!! Ha ha ha ha!!
    Lee323…great letter to Danner!
    I looked on Politico this morning to see if they added any comments from Jon Soltz under their coverage about Palin’s claims against Obama’s military support. Nothing! In their story, they do quote a rep. of the DNC but it’s not nearly as effective as Stoltz’s article.
    From the article on the Roanoke book signing .. “Any fears of a similar incident in Roanoke soon proved unfounded: Palin arrived early for her 10 a.m. book-signing at Barnes & Noble, and over three and a half hours she worked her way through every one of the nearly 1,750 people who waited in line for her autograph.”
    I call BS … 8 signatures per minute for 3.5 hours straight? One signature every 7 seconds?
    Today I am blogging and crossing my fingers Winky gets dissed off the next base. I fear that Alaska is going to become the militia cess pool of the world – will she ever stop violating this state? United We Stand Americans and Alaskans. She is pulling the “fear” card out and using it shamelessly. Just when you freaking think you’ve heard it all.
    It’s like being sucked into a dirty endless sleezy whirlpool. And, to top this off, it looks like the Governor may share the same religious and independence principles as Winky. Peckin’ Aye
