Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Voices from the Flats – The Trooper in Troopergate Breaks His Silence.

Here’s something that will make you all chuckle.  I remember back in the early days of Troopergate when it was first being reported that the governor had it in for a certain State Trooper named Mike Wooten who was formerly married to her sister Molly.  Rumors were beginning to percolate that the newly removed former Commissioner of Public Safety Walt Monegan had been pressured to axe the aforementioned Trooper to settle a personal score, and his lack of cooperation had gotten him removed from his position.

Why will this make you chuckle?  Because, do you know what I called it at the time?  Palingate.  Like I thought there would only be one.  Ha.  Silly me. Now the gates are so numerous, they each get their own title, but the gate formerly known as “Palingate” was the first.

I have talked a lot about Troopergate, and there is a lot to talk about.  It was even the topic of my essay in the book Going Rouge.  I have talked to, and have a great deal of respect for Walt Monegan.  But Trooper Mike Wooten remained a mystery.  He clammed up and wasn’t talking.  But now, he’s having a change of heart.  It seems like the Historical Fiction/Fantasy novel Going Rogue has been the big fat whomping straw that has broken the backs of all those camels who were chucked under the bus this past year.

Everyone from John McCain on down, including his staffers Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace, Palin’s former Legislative Director John Bitney, citizen activist from Wasilla Anne Kilkenny, former gubernatorial and now U.S. House candidate Andrew Halcro, former ally Andree McLeod, her attorney Donald Craig Mitchell, almost son-in-law Levi Johnston, and a host of fact-checkers from traditional media and blogs (aka “opposition researchers”) are crying foul. They’re mad as Hell and they’re not going to take it any more.

I was particularly pleased that Mike Wooten decided to have a conversation with the inimitable and insightful Geoffrey Dunn, whose much-anticipated book called “The Lies of Sarah Palin: The Untold Story About Her Relentless Quest for Power” due out in Spring of 2010 could well have a couple thousand pages if he went for a comprehensive three volume set. But we’ll assume that he’s whittling it down into a manageable size.

More Palin Lies: The Trooper in “Troopergate” Breaks His Silence

by Geoffrey Dunn

The Alaska State Trooper at the center of Sarah Palin’s so-called “Troopergate Scandal”–which impeded her run for the vice-presidency and stained her record as Alaska governor–has broken his more than year-long silence since his embattled divorce with Palin’s sister, Molly, became a cause celebre during last year’s presidential campaign.

After reading passages from Palin’s memoirs Going Rogue that deal with his marriage and subsequent divorce, a “fed up” Mike Wooten, 37, who still serves as an Alaska State Trooper in Anchorage, called the book “a pack of lies.”

According to Wooten, Palin and her father, Chuck Heath Sr., have “interfered with my life–and my children’s lives–for at least the last five years. And it is still going on. I’m done with it.”

Characterizing his adversaries as “snakes,” Wooten said he has kept quiet long enough. “From this point on I’m speaking my mind,” he declared. “I’m speaking the truth. Let the chips fall where they may.” He acknowledged that he is considering taking legal action against Palin on multiple fronts.

Although Palin would try to claim otherwise during the presidential campaign, an independent investigation ordered by the bipartisan Alaska Legislative Council (composed of ten Republicans and four Democrats) and conducted by former Republican prosecutor Steve Branchflower, resulted in the finding “that Governor Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act.”

The report issued by Branchflower documented more than thirty occasions in which then Governor Palin, her husband Todd or members of her staff tried to influence Alaska’s highly regarded Commissioner of Public Safety, Walt Monegan, to fire Wooten. When Monegan refused, Palin fired him instead.

In addition to the finding that Palin “abused” her office, the Alaska Senate cited Todd Palin and nine other state employees for “contempt” for ignoring legislative subpoenas to testify in the Troopergate investigation.

trooper1

A native of California whose father immigrated to the United States from Honduras, Wooten served 10 years in the Air Force and three more in the Air National Guard Reserves. He participated in a trio of U.S. military operations in the Persian Gulf War–Desert Storm, Desert Shield and Restore Hope–before returning stateside to Alaska at Elmendorf Air Force Base, about 45 minutes from Wasilla.

Partially disabled from his military service, Wooten pointed out that neither Todd nor Sarah Palin, or Chuck Heath for that matter, served in the armed forces. Wooten said he was particularly “disgusted and incensed” by Palin’s “insincere” dedication in Going Rogue to “our men and women in uniform.”

Wooten further noted with irony that many of those who have been victimized by Palin during her political career–including former Wasilla police chief Irl Stambaugh; Monegan and himself–were all veterans. “Sarah is only about Sarah,” Wooten said. “She doesn’t care about the ‘men and women in uniform.’ It’s all about advancing Sarah’s career.”

Public records from Alaska–some of which have been revealed for the first time–chronicle a half-decade long obsession with Wooten by Palin, her father and, later, by Palin’s husband Todd.

“They’re like poisonous snakes in the grass who spew nothing but venom,” Wooten said. “They just lay in wait and they attack you until you’re dead.”

In Going Rogue, Palin mentions none of Wooten’s military record, but cites many charges that were brought against Wooten that were subsequently dismissed. She contends that there were “ten different” citizen complaints field against Wooten–without acknowledging that all of them were filed by members of her family or close friends. “They filed every stinking one of the charges,” Wooten contends. “But it’s been more like two dozen.”

In an interview conducted in Alaska this past summer, John Cyr, the former Alaska Public Safety Employees Association Executive Director, confirmed Wooten’s charges:

Not one complaint has ever been made about Mike Wooten’s professional performance from any member of the public other than the Palin/Heath family and their closest friends. The troopers that I’ve talked to that have worked with Mike tell me Mike is the kind of guy they’d go through a door with. That he does his work. He’s a professional. You know, just no complaints out there about Mike’s work.

“It’s the product of an ugly divorce and custody battle,” Cyr [pictured below, at left, with Wooten] said of the complaints against the State Trooper. “It’s nothing more than that.”

trooper2

Wooten has acknowledged several mistakes he made while “I was younger” and admitted there were several things he “would have done differently,” but he chose to remain silent as the McCain-Palin campaign portrayed him as a “rogue” Trooper (note the irony here) who Tased his step-son and went off on violent, drunken binges, to the point of threatening to kill Palin’s father.

Wooten calls the version of events rendered in Going Rogue an “outright lie.” Either it “didn’t happen [the way she alleges],” he says, “or she exaggerated it all beyond recognition. I look forward to telling my side of this story.”

Wooten now joins an ever-growing array of figures from John McCain on down who have challenged the veracity of Palin’s memoirs. The list also includes McCain senior advisers Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace, Palin’s former legislative director John Bitney, her former political ally Andree McLeod, and former Alaska gubernatorial candidate Andrew Halcro. All Republicans. Wooten identifies himself as a “conservative” as well.

Palin contends “the chapter for our family was closed” with the divorce but fails to acknowledge any of the sustained harassment of Wooten, which, he says, continues to this day.

The father of three (two of whom are with Palin’s sister), Wooten, still living in Wasilla, is described by his friends as a “very involved father,” active as a coach in all of his three children’s extracurricular sports activities–hockey, football and soccer. “I’ve committed my life to these children and being a good dad,” he says. “I’m simply not going to allow the Palins or Chuck Heath to interfere in our lives any longer.”

Palin recounts a story in Going Rogue that Wooten “asked me to write him a recommendation for the Alaska State Trooper Academy.” What she doesn’t acknowledge is that she wrote more than one on his behalf. In a letter dated January 1, 2000, written on official City of Wasilla stationery, Palin praises Wooten profusely, though she fails to declare her then-pending familial relationship with him.

It is my pleasure to provide character reference examples for Mr. Mike Wooten. Since I have become acquainted with Mike I continue to be impressed with his integrity, worthwhile community spirit and trustworthiness…

On a personal note, I have witnessed Mike’s gift of calm and kindness towards many young kids here in Wasilla. I have never seen him raise his voice, nor lose patience, nor become agitated, in the presence of any child. Instead, Mike consistently remains a fine role model for my own children and other young people in Wasilla.

I wish America had more people with the grace and sincerity that mirrors the character of Mike Wooten. We would have a much kinder calmer trustworthy nation as a result.

I believe the United States Air Force has been fortunate to have the services of Mike the past 10 years. His work ethic, his American patriotism, his obvious dedication to traditional values, and his strong faith in God and truth is witnessed in Mike’s everyday living.

–Sarah Palin, Mayor

None of which, of course, is mentioned in Going Rogue.

For his part, Wooten recalls a telling conversation with an associate of Palin’s campaign team when she was running for Governor in 2006. “You could probably bring the whole campaign down,” the aide said. “You probably know things about her that she doesn’t want other people to know.”

[Award-winning writer and filmmaker Geoffrey Dunn's book The Lies of Sarah Palin: The Untold Story Behind Her Relentless Quest for Power will be released by St. Martin's Press in spring 2010.]

McCain’s “family values” campaign staffers indirectly interfered in Wooten’s family life, so it’s fitting that they should also feel victimized by God’s own diva. They surely share Wooten’s opinion: “Sarah is only about Sarah, It’s all about advancing Sarah’s career.”

WHY on earth will the media – ANY media – not pick up on this to balance the amazing blizzard of LIES that have been put out over the air and in the press over the last two weeks spewed by sister sarah??

I remain astounded how lame the media in general has been in their collective scratching around the chicken shed of sister’s rubble and won’t tell the truth about this woman to save their collective lives.

The whole thing that came out today about the sister’s new PLANES that billy graham ‘loaned’ to her for her ‘bus tour’ (I know…how can you be darting around on a Gulfstream II AND be doing a bus tour at the same time….got me hanging??) has not even made a ripple on the ‘calm water’ of the sister’s PR. It boggles the mind. (link to the plane stuff : http://videocafe.crooksandliars.com/scarce/sarah-palin-being-jetted-around-evangelical )

AND NOW THIS??? Does the media just not care if she’s a lair? Do they just want to create another facade for sister sarah that allegedly can’t be smeared?? I’m astounded by the lack of the media saying “STOP” !!! I really do think most of the media – in general – has just been brain-washed to the point of not knowing any better. THAT’s the scariest part of all of this….

I am embarrassed by her. I can remember cringing when Bush spoke, always hoping he would not stumble – but with Palin, it goes beyond that. It is horrific that she is taken seriously by the media and 20% of our citizens.
IF they were willing to read the reviews and fact-checks of the book-of-lies, there is no way they would remain faithful. But they gleefully and proudly admit that they DO NOT READ! They love her based on looks, sexuality and slogans from refrigerator magnets.

Two of the most deceptive and downright vindictive parts of Palin’s book are: 1) she doesn’t acknowledge that the “citizen’s complaints filed against Wooten were ALL filed by the Palin/Heath tribe AND they were dismissed; 2) for all her grandstanding about her appreciation for the military, she doesn’t even acknowledge Mike’s extensive military service to our country.

Here is the deal with the bus and plane (I sat down with the itineraries and photos, and send a big thanks to the person who figured out the plane locater site):
It looks like the plane picked up the Palin crew at Teterboro NJ or Westchester NY and took them to Grand Rapids on the 18th. They met the bus there and were with it for several days, to Fort wayne and Noblesville IN, Cincinnati and Columbus, and then over to Washington Co. near Pittsburgh.
The bus left them off and headed for Roanoke (6 hour drive), while they got on the plane and flew up to Rochester on the 21st.
Then they flew to Roanoke, met up with the bus and used it to “arrive” at various venues for a couple days, including Fort Bragg and Birmingham. meanwhile actually flying between points, and then flew on to Jacksonville. The trip to see the Grahams was in this period in a Grahamair plane.
It looks like from there they stayed with the bus from Jacksonville to The Villages near Ocala, and Orlando.
Then they flew from Orlando to Tri-cities/Richland WA for Turkeyday and Turkeyquit.
Right now the plane is on the ground at Tri-Cities.
Who knows where the bus is. The driver is home recovering from last week.
After an “Aunt Katie’s Hometown” appearance on Sunday, the schedules I have seen show Palin resuming the tour on Dec. 1 in Tempe AZ. They will all, whoever “all” is this time out, fly to Arizona, and probably to the many remaining venues as they are quite spread apart. The bus will show up in Arizona. Maybe it will chase along, carrying the “bus tour” from airport to bookstore to airport until the whole thing fizzles out after Idaho on the 10th.
I would like to know what’s up with the side trip up to Virginia on the Dec. 5th.
And what was going on in Westchester NY for 3 hours on the first day?
And when will Piper ever get to go to school again?

His profession is law enforcement, so if he wants to continue the career he has chosen and trained for, his only real employment option is with the government. The government is wildly corrupt and run by a family that is out to screw him as completely as possible. No wonder her didn’t feel he could speak up sooner. Plus, he has to be careful not to appear to be in the same situation that the judge repremanded the Palins for, denegrating family members before his children.

Talk about “frivolous” charges! The moose incident is exemplary. Monegan points out to Todd and others that while Wooten may have violated the letter of the law by shooting the moose with his wife, permit in hand, beside him, handing him the gun, and his father-in-law along for the kill and dressing, the spirit of the law was not violated. If he charged Wooten, he’d also have to charge the sister and father. Palin was busy peppering “official” e-mail with complaints about Monegan being uncooperative, not listening, and going over her head about budget and policy. Not only were the allegations made by Palin family and friends, they also served as sole witnesses to the occasions, and most were made long after the incidents occurred, accelerated when Palin became governor.

In the summary, Branchflower makes several recommendations for changes in the ethics code, as he has found ambiguities and apparently some big loopholes for governors. I don’t suppose the Personnel Board report is publicly available. I’m guessing it (with the aid of campaign lawyers?) took full advantage of the weaknesses Branchflower elaborated.

Reading the report provided me with personal insight into the manipulative and retributive Palin modus operendi. In summary: mean girl.

Wooten may open the door for the many people in AK abused by this power- hungry, hateful, dangerous woman to speak out. I must say, I have been astonished by Palin’s abililty, even post-resignation, to maintain silence on the part of those in AK who should speak up. This is crucial, since it is obvious that Palin will NEVER shut up and will NEVER stop trying to get power, and that Murdoch, through Fox and his media empire will continue to promote her.

I agree with Bystander above. I think Rupert Murdoch is willing to take a loss on SP’s book and book tour for the chance that she may have a still have a shot at politics in the future. I’m hoping Geoffrey Dunn’s book this coming Spring has many first person testimonies of her manipulative abuses of power, and dishonest behavior.

Meredith- Palin is to speak at the Gridiron Dinner with Barney Frank on 12/5.

Don’t know about Westchester except that has a lot of old money folks living there? She could have gone to visit Bill Clinton as Hillary was probably out of town.

Meredith, you could start posting the airplane schedule at her pee site or facebook site and tell all those loyal fans who purchased their copy of her drivel at the Kum & Go instead of the bookstore to meet her at the airport for an autograph. That could screw up things.

Maybe the spaceship will return to Sandpoint, ID and take her back. Rapture, Sarah style!

Heath was a draft dodger. That’s why he became an elementary teacher – deferment. If you look at his history, he had a hard getting and KEEPING a teaching job until he came to AK.

I hope all the people she has wronged sue her into the stone age.

I am astounded at Palin’s fans! Who would wait 2 minutes to see her and why do they want to? She’s a mom from Alaska, an ex-govenor, ex-VP candidate, and they can’t take pictures or talk to her, what a waste of time!

I hope Dunn does a book tour, goes on Oprah, Fox, etc. He needs his own media blitz to get the word out and discuss the truth to create a major scandal against Palin who’ll think she just had the most successful book tour. Also if any lawsuits are filed, that news should be broadcast on all major stations. If nothing else, it will educate her future rival candidates so they have ammunition to take her down.

Palin lovers still deny the ethics violations and lies in her book and use her same excuses when they are brought up; it’s the liberal media, anti-conservatism, elites, sexism, etc. They won’t even fact check the info and just blindly love her, what kind of spell does she have on these people? It needs to be broken once & for all.

Sarah Palin’s followers are Christian Fundamentalist extremists, which explains the cult-like devotion. She is backed by R. Murdoch who owns Fox News and has had contact with Franklin Graham and his Samaritan Purse organization.

Fortunately, the majority of Christians are not fundamentalist extremists, but it explains the crowds who come out to see her.

I wish Mr. Wooten well. Sounds like he has suffered in silence through a lot. The only reason I can think that he wouldn’t speak up is that his kids are related to Palin and perhaps he was trying to spare them any further noteriety. Of course, having your dad attacked the way she has done is not going to be easy for them either. Maybe now that it’s all in her book, that’s what pushed him over the edge about keeping silent.

Is it easier to sue someone when it’s in print rather than when the lies are verbal? Hmmm, should be interesting. And I hope that Dunn’s book sales are really good. Sarah needs to know that people are getting information about her that didn’t come from her fabricated version of events.

I imagine that Mr Wooten has held his tongue because Family Court judges can get really testy if they see divorced parents publicly defaming the other parent, or the other side of the family. Sarah, et. al., got off with a warning because Molly didn’t actually shoot her mouth off.

However, being an Alaska State Trooper does not make you a “public figure”, so there is no automatic immunity for anyone who slanders or libels him. I think (although I am, of course, not a lawyer) that a Family Court would feel that he should be permitted to defend his good name via legal proceedings. He needs to consult a really good libel/defamation lawyer to see if he’s got a lawsuit or not.
