Open Thread – Hold Dan Sullivan Accountable

For all of you who, like me, have been waiting for some sort of “Hold Dan Sullivan Accountable” place where people united in their disdain for Dan Sullivan can go and pull up a virtual chair, and break some virtual bread, have I got the place for you.

Taa-daa! Behold the “Hold Dan Sullivan Accountable” Facebook page. For such a short time in office, he’s already racked up quite an impressive list of reasons to make him a one-term-worm. (Ooo, I really like that!)

Did you know that he collected $12,000 in pay while he was mayor elect, before he was even working as mayor, and while we still had an acting mayor? Nice work if you can get it.

onetermworm

Then he vetoed Ordinance 64, the ordinance that would add “sexual orientation” to the city’s non-discrimination policy.

ordinance64

Then he decided to keep a bunch of firetrucks in their firehouses and not operating to assure rapid response and protection to the citizens of Anchorage and their homes.

And just for giggles, he slashed library hours and shut down bus service on Black Friday.

IF you believe Mayor Sullivan is wrong to cut vital city services or veto specific Anchorage Assembly Ordinances, click HERE to join the crowd!

Well, I’ll be down on the Kenai River or on the Kasilof or in Homer or in Seward or on the Willow (depending) or the Little Susitna … wherever, chasing fish. What Sullivan does is immaterial to me, an Outsider, but I think what he does is very material to all Alaskans.

I was happy to see on ADN that NOAA is going to protect the Beluga’s in Cook Inlet. Of course it also said the Parnell & Sullivan administrations are going to fight tooth & nail to prevent this from happening. Primal Scream!! These two yahoos better be one-termers or everyone is in trouble.

I’m getting a sense of despair today on all of the progressive sites that I check each morning. Much slower traffic, fewer comments than usual, and the postings are terser and *down*.

Most of us don’t want any further troops sent to Afghanistan, but we see the predicament POTUS is in with trying to clean up the Bush/Cheney debacle, and we feel the need to try to support his decision. Yet we fear this will be another unending Viet Nam.

No matter what attempts are made to help our country, the rightwingers and the religious extremists are in there battling hotter and heavier than ever and seem to be pulling in truckloads of money to air their views on national media.

Just amongst the Mudpuppies, we’ve got some who are dealing with health issues, losing pets, losing jobs, the hungry villagers needing help, and with all the political problems, we need a boost of some good news, good cartoons, or just plain happy stories. I know I need a fix and it’s too early (even for Kentucky) to indulge in adult beverages, so I’m off to search the web for something funny or uplifting. Time also for another flyinureye cartoon, or some of AKM’s photos of serenity-at-large. I’d even settle for another story on Palin ……… if it was another of her stupid actions that would give us a laugh.

Your wish is my command. New Palin story up. AKM

That 12k… from the way you present it, sounds like he collected from the public till without actually intending to do any work… oh, wait! That’s what federal prosecutors call a no-show job. Doesn’t pass the smell test, imho.

Time for Sullivan to return that 12k, or for someone to drop a dime.

How about starting a page to hold Parnell accountable for releasing Palin’s emails?

I can’t figure out why someone hasn’t sued the state yet. Now they requested another extention?

Someone is covering for Palin to make sure those emails are not released while she is on a money-makin’ book tour. Who? Would that be Parnell who has the ultimate decision? Unless some serious public pressure if put on Parnell, he will continue to allow Palin to “govern” (control Parnell) from outside of office.

Thanks to all for the *happy* links – nothing better than little children singing to brighten everyone’s day. I decided to go get my own happy fix in my backyard. Our daughter and two grandsons all have homes here on our property, so I bundled up against the freezing rain and climbed into my golf cart and spent a very pleasant hour cuddling my 5 week old great-grandson. There is something so soothing about holding a little innocent baby and knowing that although our country is going through some real tumultuous times, things do get better, and these new children are our future to hopefully make things better, as other young ones have in the past. I also put on some Mannheim Steamroller Christmas music and that’s a great help. In a bit, I’ll putter around on the web and see what good stuff I can find. Just being able to come to this website with kind and sharing people is a blessing in itself!

@23 austintx – Interesting article. Palin has received so much airtime, it’s disgusting. Our country has important things to focus on. Alaskans were use to her, but America thinks she is a novelty. Hope this wears off soon. In Alaska, many women can field-dress a moose, ride a snowmobile, shoot a gun, commercial fish, go to PTA, and dress to the nines. That stuff isn’t a big deal here. It’s normal. Maybe a reality show of Alaska that showcases Alaskan women who are far superior to the falsely glorified Mrs. Palin will take away some of her glitter.

  26. 26
    GreatGranny2CNo Gravatar says:

Polly – You are right on the mark with your statements. Not only in Alaska, but others can field dress…….in my case, it is deer as we don’t have moose in Kentucky. Growing up in Vermont and spending lots of time on my uncle’s lobster boat off Nantucket, I’m equally familiar with pulling on ropes until my hands bled and dragging in the pots. Snowmobiles aren’t common here either, but 4-wheelers are the equivalent for those of us in non-heavy-snow areas, and as many women ride them as men. I think we could look all over the USA and find there are countless women highly capable of many equivalent activities who manage to have all, and do all, that they want to and are successful without stepping on others.

One does wonder about her rabid fans and what their daily lives and activities are really like. Are they so dull and housebound, watching dopey-soaps and with no outside activities to expand their world, that someone like Palin becomes a goddess to them?

So is a rabid pro development Bartender-Mayor Sullivan gonna do about the proposed critical habitat for the Cook Inlet Beluga?

Gosh, the city budget if so tight. Aint that right? Or at least that is what Bartender-Mayor Sullivan has been screaming… So is he going to oppose the proposed critical habitat? And if so, with what resources?

Such a quandary ol Bartender-Mayor Sullivan is in… But I supposed he’ll do what his political party usually does and cough up some money and personell to oppose it…. any guess as to his excuses might be, enlight of such strained financial resources the city is in?

And if he does cough up some resources to oppose, does he realize, his only recourse is to submit comment during a public comment period? So how much money, time and resources is he going to spend, enlight of the fact that his administration, has nothing to spend…?

While I do share your views in holding Mayor Sullivan accountable for his platform of Blame Begich, I question the relevance of your last photo. Despite our political differences, two of those girls in the photo are college classmates of mine. There is no shame in dressing up for a political social function and having a photo taken with the mayor. Despite your lack of a caption your insinuation is clear, and strikes me as tactless.

    Please drop the photo.

    Yours, Matti Dupre

I understand your discomfort, but the young women in the picture have done absolutely nothing wrong. The photo illustrates the judgment of the person we elected to represent our city and to make good, intelligent, mindful decisions about what is appropriate and what is not. The mayor, and the location of his hands are the issue. The photo is widely circulated at this point. There is NO insinuation, other than our mayor should know better. He is the one we elected, and he is the one we expect to make appropriate choices. AKM
