Good tip on shipping! One of my bigger boxes was a carton of diapers, which wouldn’t begin to fit into the large flat rate. I was able to squish the diapers a little tighter and add a few more items, then wrapped it in brown paper and it went parcel post. The cost was just under $15, but had it gone priority rate, it would have been $32.

Another tip is to eliminate as much of the excess packaging as possible. I got rid of the box the tea bags were in and simply put them into a zip-lock bag. Same with a toy set – dismantled it and then one won’t have to worry about discarding all those little clips and wires that filled the box.

Anyone with tips for saving on shipping and getting the most to our families, clue us in. I want them to get the most “bang for my bucks”. I know, I know……I’ve been watching too much HG-TV.

London Bridges @13 – I think I read somewhere that Palin is/was a fan of Van Halen – rock star I think?

Newfoundland Dogs Rule – We’ll keep our fingers and toes crossed, and keep you in our prayers, that your test results are good, and so sorry you got stuck in that machine – it had to have been uncomfortable!

I noticed that the Toad got down off the roof and showed up at Fort Hood and was actually sitting right beside his wife – whooeee!

    A fan from CA Says:

The Constitution is clear that the President must be born on actual American soil. That’s why McCain (born on the base in Panama) had to get an opinion. Same thing would have happened for POTUS if he was a few years older and had been born before Hawaii had become a state. Wonder if any previous President’s or candidates were born in territories before statehood?

    OMG Says:

Elsie…I have no idea. The fact remains that he was born on US soil in the State of Hawaii. His birth certificate has been produced and examined by officials and has been declared legal. He is a naturally born US citizen and as such has rights under the laws of the country to serve as our President. In fact, he was issued a US passport as a child where his mother produced his birth certificate for the US authorities as proof of birth. There is no question that he is legally eligible to serve as the President of the United States.

Funny thing is that these same birthers didn’t cry foul when Louisiana Gov. Bobby “right to life” Jindal was being pushed by the GOP to run for President even though both of his parents were born in India. He too is legally eligible to run for President because even though both parents were not born here, he was born in the US.

There should be no controversy on this issue and Palin is disgusting for playing along with the nutcases of her ilk. The birthers are showing their true colors and color has a lot to do with their disgusting display.

Last thought of the birther insanity: Six presidents prior to Obama (born in the US) had at least one foreign born parent:

Only six other U.S. presidents had a foreign-born parent. Mr. Obama will be the first in nearly ninety years, since President Herbert Hoover was inaugurated in 1929.

Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) is the only president born of two immigrants, both Irish. Presidents with one immigrant parent are Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809), whose mother was born in England, James Buchanan (1857-1861) and Chester Arthur (1881-1885), both of whom had Irish fathers, and Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921) and Herbert Hoover (1929-1933), whose mothers were born respectively in England and Canada.

Dang on that born-on-American-soil thing. I forgot about that. When I studied civics, the dinosaurs had just died. And, I’ve slept since then. I’ll just accept the fact that there is no simple way to argue Obama’s citizenship with anyone who disputes it.

I looked at the pictures of her campaign, I mean BOOK, tour stop at Fort Hood (which puts my knickers in a knot to begin with!). I managed to quell the building nausea long enough to get through all the pictures. However, this photo caption caught my eye:

“Sarah Palin is touring the country in an RV with her husband, Todd.”

    Huh???

I didn’t realize that a Gulfstream jet was considered an ‘RV’. And, I thought that Todd was ‘on the roof’ for most of this tour. She even lies about things that are thoroughly documented in photos, video and news reports!

    Quince Squibb Underpinnings Says:

If you’ll all forgive a lawyerly diversion, the “natural born” citizen issue is clear-cut as to the sitting President, given that he was born in Hawaii when it was a state.

Even the gray areas in constitutional law really are not gray as to President Obama. Plain old “citizenship” under the 14th Amendment of course can be a status aquired in a variety of ways. The Constitution’s distinct requirement that a President be a “natural born” citizen has not come up a great deal in federal jurisdprudence. Title 8 of the United States Code, however, clarifies that there is a multiplicity of ways in which one would be considered a citizen from birth/”natural born.”

In addition to being born in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction, for example, one could be born outside the United States if either or both parents are U.S. citizens and one has lived in the United States, or so long as one parent is a citizen is a citizen who resided in the United States for at least one year and the other is a U.S. national; under certain circumstances (i.e., if one parent is a citizen who resided in the United States for at least a year), if one is born in a United States possession; and any child under the age of five whose place of birth is unknown but is found in the United States, so long as proof of the child’s non-citizenship is not provided by the time he/she reaches majority age; and if one parent has no U.S. citizenship status, so long as the other parent is a U.S. citizen who resided there for at least five years.

Probably once again more than anyone wanted to read.

P.S. I once had a professor who memorably asked our class whether the founders would have contemplated a President born by C-section as “natural born.” Having subsequently had four C-sections, it sure didn’t seem like natural birth to me.

    check this out:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/04/vitter-coburn-public-opti_n_380933.html

“Democrats took on a pair of Republican senators Friday, signing on to an amendment that would make lawmakers join the public option.

On Thursday, thinking Democratic senators would balk at the idea, Sens. David Vitter (R-La.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) introduced the gimmick health-care amendment.

But Democrats called their bluff, and the Republicans wouldn’t allow it. When Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) tried to become a co-sponsor of the amendment, he got the cold shoulder.

So Brown, joined by Sens. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), and Al Franken (D-Minn.), forced his way onto the amendment with a unanimous consent vote.

God, I love Franken. He makes me so proud. And I’m never even been to Minnesota.

I was just reading some of the comments under the Bree Palin story. The story was about two ‘ boots on the ground ‘ people ( Virginia Voter & Mrs. TTB ) attending the Virginia Palin book signing and their protest there.
S’error’- ‘ the Private citizen ‘ and Staff decided to censor the Publics opinion and force them to protest at the back of the parking lot. It seems to have failed in some respect in that it may have created even more attention by putting them wayyyyyyyyy back there. ( Ooops) They said they were interviewed by 4 different news Organizations and one of them being Associated Press. Sounds like one of those S’error and Meg Plans. They create even MORE publicity and attention by their reaction to it. ” Iconic image ” and all…. that will go down in the history books of all time.
The weather was horrible there and it sounds like they will supply more details later with an Update. ( Press questions to them.. etc ) Great ‘ boots on the ground ‘ effort and taking one for the Team. ;-)

OK. The UK Sunday Telegraph is reporting today that SP has this advice for the US:

She said the United States has been “touched by God” because the nation’s early leaders dedicated the country to God.
Mrs Palin said: “If we could get back to that, that humbleness, with that kind of contrite spirit, I think that we would be able to be provided more of the answers to so many of the great challenges that we’re facing.
“And these are huge challenges, whether we’re talking about health care, whether we’re talking about energy independence, whether we’re talking about national security measures.”

Inquiring minds want to know: how did the contrite and humble Sarah provide Alaska with solutions to its problems?

    Re #38 Elsie

“D*rn minorities, anyway.” Not to put too fine of a point on it, “they” are not minorities; actually, “they” are part of “us.” I suppose that, to Sarah, a minority is any one who is not very similar to her. That leaves a lot of minority folk in this world!

Apparently. Sarah didn’t get around much. If you travel the world at all, most of which is colored in some hue, you find that the great preponderance of people that you meet are likable and you hope that they will like you. Guess what? It usually works out that way! Once you meet the people, it’s harder to hate the race. Frito-Lay (paraphrased) came closest to a formula for world peace and tolerance – “Bet you can’t hate just ONE!” Think of it! They were just trying to sell potato chips!

If Sarah sees this cartoon, and I think she or her staff will, someone will have to explain to her that IQ refers to “Intelligence Quotient” and not to “I Quit!”

It seems to me that a few of the legislators with spines, like Franken, Brown and Rep. Anthony Weiner, are beginning to inspire the others to get a little more in-your-face with their Republican colleagues.

    Baker's Dozen Says:

In order to be eligible to be president, you must be a natural born citizen. This requirement is met if you are born on US soil. It is also met if one of your parents is a citizen who lived within the US for at least 5 years. Obama’s mother meets this last criteria. Hawaii meets the first. Obama could have been born anywhere in the world because his mom is a US citizen who lived within the US for at least 5 years.

  35. 85
    Baker's Dozen Says:

Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Monroe, JQ Adams are just some of the presidents that were not born on US soil. They became citizens when the United States came into being. So, yes, we’ve had several presidents that weren’t born on US soil!

Say No to Palin in Politics Says:

Seriously? they’re keeping the book from Mom? and Mom doesn’t know how to get her own book? a lame story, true, or pure BS? Chuck said he got his, what the heck, is not his also Sally’s? is Chuck more special? or more demanding. Did Scarah give her daddy preference? with his special signed copy? what is going on? Maybe it’s just me, but I find this WEIRD.

Scarah blew it by abandoning booing fans with unsigned books after they’d stood in line for umpteen hours overnight in cold rain and gotten wrist bands promising them a signed book. She broke her promise. It created a near disaster for her book tour, on what, the first or second day? lol Her parents arrived via a separate charter jet shortly thereafter. Daddy to the rescue.

Last night was the first time I heard she had hand cramps and “that” is why she dashed off, in her bus, with no apologies or explanation, leaving her fans breathing diesel fumes while crying “sign my book”.

Gosh, she’s slipping, what happened to nipping bad rumors in the bud, puttin bad news to rest. Scarah, where’s Meg when ya need her? have you left her out in the cold, behind in AK? were you mad at her, is she now mad at you, are you two on the outs? Did you dare throw Meg under the bus?

    http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/politics/national/stories/DN-palinplano_05met.ART.State.Edition2.4c0b20b.html

“Sally Heath, 69, said it was the first opportunity she had had to see much of the continental U.S.

She said her daughter had broached the idea of her parents joining the book tour just before the first stop last month in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“It’s probably too much for us. I don’t know how long we can keep going,” she said half-jokingly of the tour schedule.”

She admitted she had not yet read her daughter’s book but said she intended to.

“Nobody’s even given me a copy to read on the bus,” she said, laughing.”

    ****************

And then there is this…….tsk, tsk, bad Scarah, BAD. You really should get over your media paranoia. Come on, you can do it, with God all things are possible. Your acting like a whimpy, whiny scared baby, not a brave Christian, where is your faith.

I think it’s becoming a mental block or a phobia with her, lol. And I bet all the McCain campaign staffers are laughing their asses off, waiting for her to combust or melt, knowing it’s just a matter of time.

“Organizers had set up a small stage and microphone outside the store. But Palin made no remarks. Media access was restricted. Reporters were not allowed to ask questions and were kept away from the desk where she was signing books.”

    ***********************************

AND, there is also this, oh how quaint, Scarah came up with the bright idea, all by her lonesome, I’m sure (ha), to have a book tour stop in her birth town of Sandpoint, Idaho. A back to roots road trip. Well, hmmm, this could get interesting eh? Dec. 10th., a 3 hr book signing, 6-9 pm

Here’s a good comment on Sarah Palin that I just read:

President Palin decides to send 200,000 more troops into Afghanistan. But unable to find it on a map, she mistakenly sends them to Argentina. When the liberal elite media run the story of her blunder, she responds, “You know, Joe Sixpack doesn’t know where Afghanistan is. You east coast media types need to stop obsessing over geometry. Smaller government is what we need to get government off our backs. Tax cuts for small businesses so they can put more money on the table. We’re a strong nation and we will win the war on drugs that started in Afghanistan. And when the fish swim, the turkey is done.” With that she flies back to Alaska to give birth to her grandson, Algebra.
