Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

The Shannyn Moore Show – And More!

Well, today is a jam-packed Saturday for those of you in the Anchorage Bowl!

First, you can catch the next fun-filled episode of Moore Up North, right there on your teevee set.  Tune in to KYES, Channel 5 from 4-5pm and join Shannyn and her fabulous guests.  She’ll be talking to some fine folks from the Anchorage International Film Festival, and will welcome panelists Bob Shavelson, Executive Director of Cook Inletkeepers, Elstun Lauesen, Contributing author to Going Rouge and recent Voices from the Flats, and former Legislator Eric Croft.

Find out which panelist said, “I knew Joe Vogler.  Joe Vogler was a friend of mine, and YOU are no Joe Vogler.”  Also speculate about beluga whales on Viagra.  A great mix of serious topics and Alaskan-syle fun.

shannynpanel

Then, you’ll just have time to turn off the TV and run to your radio to enjoy the usual Saturday broadcast of The Shannyn Moore Show coming to you live from Spenard on 700am KBYR.  KBYR is a bastion for conservative thought for 24/6, but on Saturdays it sees the light for a couple hours and you are invited to join the fun.

Live Stream it HERE.

Place & Time: 700am KBYR,  5-7pm Alaska time, 6-8pm Pacific, and 9-11pm Eastern.

Call in number is 907.274.5297. The toll free number (in state only) is 866.610.5297

Live blog it in the comments so Shannyn can get your feedback.

But wait, you’re not finished yet!   Get dressed and ready to go while you’re listening, and then on a commercial break, hop in the car and finish the show on your way to Rumrunners at 4th and E Street for the Muckrakers Ball!  Cook Inletkeeper is hosting this great annual event which is $10 at the door.  There will be live music, cash prizes, great food, and a group of people you will love to spend the evening with.

muckrakers ball

The event runs from 7-10pm.  I will be there as the 2009 Muckraker of the Year, which still blows me away.  I’ll even be saying a few words and promise to try very hard not to babble incoherently, or “pull a Balloon Boy.”  Mostly I’m looking forward to the opportunity to meet a bunch of you whom I have not yet had the opportunity to meet.

So, there’s your afternoon and evening, all planned out.  And you wondered what you’d be doing today!

For those who are unable to participate in any or all of these great events, you can catch Shannyn’s radio podcast, watch Moore Up North later in the week when it goes up on YouTube, and I’ll definitely be posting a recap of the Muckraker’s Ball tomorrow.

(If anyone has pictures they want to share, please send them to me at akmuckraker(at)yahoo.com!)

Perhaps Palin was intuitive when she said that big things would be coming out of Alaska and that Alaska was going to be a special place for the US in the near future.

I’m wondering if perhaps too , — she was misguided about how that was exactly going to pan out.

    Happy Progressive Alaska Night!

ktumulty: Palin’s parents show up unexpectedly at #gridiron. She says, “don’t treat them like the … Salamis”.

  25. 25

That is great they get to learn to play an instrument while incarcerated. I just think rehab for chemical dependency and health care for the inmates is a bigger priority. Inmates are treated horribly, especially those who are mentally ill. The ACLU has been writing a report about them over a very long period of time(what’s the hold up?), but it is very unlikely they will file a lawsuit due to people in Alaska believing they are doing what they are supposed to do and lack of funds donated to the ACLU here. Many also come out of the prison system homeless, are denied section 8 housing and can’t find a job because of being stigmatized. The state of Alaska has very little rehabilitation.

Even if the soldiers come back intact from Afghanistan physically a large number will be psychologically damaged just like in all wars. This affects the soldiers, their families, and society as a whole. The same goes for the people in Afghanistan, they are also damaged. Our reputation is damaged. Actually one war has an affect on not just the two countries which are involved, but the whole world.

  46. 46

Citizens is israel have lost many of their civil rights like we have in the US.

  47. 47
    Baker's DozenNo Gravatar says:

Lessee: No exit strategy in any war.
In that case, if we’re not going to have any innovation, doesn’t that put us back to having men fire their personally owned muskets from behind trees and spending winters in the snow at Valley Forge with insufficient clothing and often without shoes? Perhaps we should re segregate the troops and ban planes, jets, helicopters and missiles!
We’ve never done it this way is the argument of the ostrich–up to his neck in the sand. Blind, deaf, and choking to death. Good thing ostriches are actually smarter than that!

  48. 48
    AKPetMomNo Gravatar says:

The Afghan people fight wars with insufficient clothing and little or no high end technology, yet they somehow are kicking the butts of every country (Russia, US) that come in and try to defeat them. They fight wars with little more than the arms and munitions provided to them from first world countries without planes or helicopters yet we still can’t submit them to the point that they will bend to our wills.
An exit strategy and date is a good thing because we could fight them for a hundred years and still not “win”.

I know she was preggers twice, but because they are so private, we truly have no idea what she is like. In house, she could be a real ‘B’ for all we know. They may have a relationship that once or twice here or there — it does happen in some relationships.

  69. 69
    Baker's DozenNo Gravatar says:

The Afghans are able to repel invaders because they’re defending their homeland (a big incentive that often works) and because of the terrain. I don’t think we want to give up our innovations just because they’ve never been used before. This includes an exit strategy for a type of war we haven’t really fought before.

I know they both have long “e” sounds, but let’s not confuse “elites” and “sleaze.” Elites are well educated–through schools or self taught–that use critical thinking and consider what it best for the whole as well as for the individual, who consider the law as well as morals and ethics in decision making.
Sleazes can’t keep their pants zipped or their skirts down or they have a problem with having their “opinion” swayed by personal gain.

  76. 76
    meedeNo Gravatar says:

Another of what Palin thinks is a joke she said at the Gridiron Dinner:

“As for the president, Palin joked that she was looking at a magazine cover of Obama and Chinese president Hu Jinato during an airplane flight. A nearby passenger stated, “Hu’s the Communist,” she related.

And, Palin said, “I thought he was asking a question.”

    flex,

I think the date Obama set for what is being called the Exit Strategy is actually a date for which to push the Afghan people to step up to be trained.

Look what happened with the open ended war in Iraq. When they set benchmarks, they were never met and training took years. Bush refused to set a date so Bush & Iraq government dragged it out — for years.

“It’s good to be here though, really, in front of this audience of leading journalists and intellectuals, or as I like to call it, a death panel.”
