Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Am I Dreaming?

I used to have my alarm clock set to NPR.   The good thing about this was that I was awakened to the news, and caught a few stories while I woke myself up and starting the day.  The bad thing was that sometimes it didn’t wake me up right away and I’d sort of roll over in a fog and wonder why I was dreaming about settlements on the West Bank, or Pinochet, or the Ambassador to Spain.  Then I’d realize that the radio had somehow seeped into my brain during that half asleep half awake grey zone.

So I do a lot of my blogging at night.  I try to get some things done when the house is quiet, but invariably I stay up too late, and sometimes while being thoughtful and closing my eyes to….er….concentrate (yeah, that’s it) I will sometimes nod off for a moment or two.  Well, that situation happened just now, and I popped awake thinking, “I’ve got to get the open thread up and then I’m going to bed…. And why was I dreaming about throwing tomatoes at Sarah Palin?”  Now, you might think that this type of dream is one I have often, but I don’t.  So I thought it was kind of unusual.  Then, my eyes focused on the screen which had my email up, and there as nice as you please, was an email with the subject line:  “Tomatoes thrown at Sarah Palin in Mall.”  And it’s true.

Some guy in the Mall of America positioned himself on the second level, above the book signing with four tomatoes, and let two of them fly.  His aim was no match for his pluck and determination however, and the two he managed to lob did not land anywhere near Sarah Palin, but did manage to peg a nearby police officer.  Oops.

I’ll confess that I actually had a little mind movie about throwing a tomato when she was introducing Michael Reagan at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts earlier this year.

Officers say two of their own were hit by tomato fragments instead, after the tomato hit the stage about 10 feet from Palin. People on the second level balcony, where the tomato was thrown from, helped police apprehend the man accused of throwing it.

He was found with two un-launched tomatoes still in his posession.  Guess that’s how they knew they had the right guy.  And so Jason Olsen, 33 from St. Paul was arrested and may face charges of assaulting a police officer.

So, there you have it.  An unexpected Open Thread.  My inner grown-up knows that the guy shouldn’t have done it.  But that aside, you’ve got to give him style points – he didn’t throw an egg, or a water balloon, or a pie….there’s just something so poetic about a tomato.

And now I’m off to dream about something ELSE.

The crowd wasn’t as big as we’d expected at the Mall of America. Only around 1,000 folks dutifully lined up to get Sarah Palin’s autograph, armed with their wristbands that indicated they’d purchased a copy of her new book, Going Rogue, from the MOA Barnes and Noble. Sadly, Palin didn’t do anything wacky, just signed her name.

But there was one spot of hilarity. One of the attendees brought a copy of the Nov. 18 issue of City Pages. That’s the one where we parodied Going Rogue’s cover, subbing in Michele Bachmann for the former VP candidate and changing the title to Going Crazy.

The “collateral damage” was, therefore, foreseeable and he gets no congrats from me. From that distance, he could have hit an innocent party in the face. There’s no excuse for that type of behavior.

Hilarous. They said she started to sign it because she didn’t even realize it wasn’t her face on the book. Dumb, dumb. She didn’t look too happy about it.

When did Toad join the party?

I swear, Palin must read this blog and then “correct” her actions based on negative things people are saying about her.

Big hair was mentioned, and the next day she had on a hat.
Putting some clothes on that baby was mentioned…..next day for an interview, she had him all dressed up with socks and shoes.
Where’s Toad?……Now, he is on the road with her. On and on……..

I wouldn’t be suprised if she stayed up all night trying to read the blogs to see what people are saying about her. That way, she can perfectly craft her image to what people are saying.

Doing so would match the description of a person with NPD—-They are obsessed with what other people think of them.

UK Lady – Thanks for finding that link – VERY interesting and Andrew comes across in just the right way…. a disillusioned conservative Republican making valid points.

As to the tomato-throwing – it was a common method of showing dislike in centuries past, but unfortunately does nothing to help the cause. The media picks up on anything anti-Palin and makes it seem worse. Just look at how disparaging they were of the few who protested in Virginia – compared them to the Teabaggers. We have to stay above the fray and not bring ourselves to their level.

He should have had something like lots of notes to Sarah, each one asking a different question – politely. The most they could have gotten him on then would have been littering, if Palin’s camp hadn’t picked them up to read them.

I noticed in that clip, when they ran a side clip of Palin going through the line, that most of the time, she was looking forward and just sticking her hands off to the side to shake, without even looking at the people she was shaking hands with.

There was an interesting article (link posted on another of these threads) regarding the five stacks of books – guess they wanted to be sure no one snuck in something else with her cover on it. Paranoia or what?

    BevNo Gravatar says:

I honestly do not think that anyone in the MSM will ever ask her any direct questions, two reasons: 1..she will not answer them anyway. 2…it would look like she is being picked on.

Katie Couric was the only person who dared to challenge her and as long as she can go on shows like Beck and toss her word salad, they will just add the dressing and make her look even better then she is in reality.

Quite honestly she scares the crap right out of me because of how she gets a pass and is allowed to not be treated like any other politician…so what you are a woman, put your big girl pants on, and if you want to play with the big boys and take them on, then expect the same treatment.

You should not be allowed to play with paying.

While I do want to take the food away from the beastly Palin (ie her media coverage) I’m glad that there are those out there that will call her as she is (an idiot).

Along the lines of the Young Turks presentation, if I hear one more MSM pundit say that the question to Palin about the “Bush Doctrine” was unfair, I think I’ll scream (oh, that’s right, I already have). Why is it so impossible to remember that during the GOP Presidential debate, all candidates (and that includes McCain) were asked the same question. If Ms. Palin had been interested, she could have checked out her running mate’s position on that very issue as it is available on-line. Gee what a little homework and intellectual curiosity could have done. Oh, but I forgot, it was around that time that Sarah asked, during an interview, what a VP actually does….

Maybe it’s a good thing she wasn’t tomato-splashed; it would have been all over the news and given her another “high”. Funny thing, yesterday I woke up having had a dream of a huge moose running after us around a city. It was like a dinosaur moose, if you will. Trying to get into this house, it was pushing the front door and myself, hubby, and a stranger were standing behind it holding it shut. A little square window in the door – a big eye staring right at us. I had a distinct feeling in the dream the moose was about Sarah. In another scene the stranger was digging a hole in a field with her bare hands, kneeling over it, a dead animal lay beside her with a number of plastic garbage articles, old sinks, stuff, where she would place them in the hole. Moose comes barrelling towards us and twirls around, (it had a tail) and the tail was whipping us each time moose did a complete turn.

Wow, I woke up. I had a distinct feeling the stranger was Andree McLeod. Could have been the pizza the evening before. Anyway, just wanted to share.

Here’s one paragraph from the story…. I remember it being over $500,000, now her legal bills are over $600,000…….hmmmmm.

Palin reportedly incurred more than $600,000 in personal legal bills but it is not clear how much of that would have qualified for reimbursement under the rules that Sullivan wants to put in place. Palin supporters set up a legal defense fund to cover her costs but it’s in limbo after an investigator hired by the state found “probable cause” that it violated the law. The same investigator, Anchorage attorney Tom Daniel, recommended that the state pay a governor’s legal costs for defending against complaints that end up tossed out.

It comes as no surprise that you are a big fan of Palin. She makes a nice, almost sexy, facade for your way of doing things politically. After all, you are the person most credited with blacklisting administration jews during the days of Nixon.

Oh, I do not expect you will ever see my remarks (your staff will see to that) but it takes self-aggrandizing individuals like yourself to set the good people of this country against themselves. And who better to be your servant in your cause than the dim-wit known as Sarah Palin?

I like this paragraph from a recent post at an online site: What price the courageous frontier huntress now—an empty-headed echo chamber for rumor-mongers and freaks who shoots from ambush and then runs away? Some condescending right-wing intellectuals are calling her style “populist” and comparing it with Andrew Jackson and William Jennings Bryan. The true name for it is demagogy, descending from Joseph McCarthy, Robert Welch, and the nastier elements of the old Nixon gang—people to whom slander and defamation was second nature.

I look at the tomato throwing guy as a page out of the Karl Rove Handbook of Politics. When Bush was running for governor in Texas, Karl trashed his own campaign office, excitedly called the newspapers, and blamed the “break in” on Democrats. That, and a few other underhanded stunts (calling Ann Richards a drunk or gay) may have helped elect George.

So, when I hear that the Tomato Guy didn’t come close to hitting Sarah, for all we know, someone paid him to lob soft balls (I mean soft fruit) at her for the publicity. The tour is winding down, and there isn’t much to write about other than what she wore, which baby she was carrying, how big (or small) the crowd was, how the crowd braved the weather. Boring. I see the Tomato Tosser as 50% stunt, 50% nut case.

What is the correct item to throw at Sarah? (not that this is an appropriate way to act in public. I’m just “thinking out loud”). Well, for starters, I like Sarah’s quote, “I eat, therefore I hunt.” That calls for Moose Parts. Todd is a Fish Picker, so he would appreciate a dead fish (should have died of natural causes; we don’t want to get the PETA folks mad at us).

Some of the blogs have been suggesting that the youngest member of the family is not appropriately dressed for the weather, so that would mean having another baby shower– of socks, shoes, little jackets, a little hat.
And, her younger daughter has been missing school, so we should included some books for her to catch up on her reading– that is, after she finishes “Going Rogue.” Since Sarah’s mom and dad are now celebrities, they will be needing some sunglasses (don’t all the movie stars wear ‘em?). Last, but not least, I have always resented being called “The lower 48,” so I will be making a paper airplane out of a map of the United States, with the road back to Alaska clearly marked. I don’t want her; you can have her.

Regarding Palin’s tour. I read several weeks ago (in a tiny newspaper story) that she was to be here in Salt Lake on Dec. 9. I assume she is still coming, but it hasn’t been mentioned again either in the newspaper or on the local nightly news. If it was mentioned, it had to be brief story as I haven’t heard a thing about her visit.

I’m guessing that it will be mentioned on this evenings news tonight if she is indeed coming. I thought there would be more local hype since this state is red, red, red. Although, this is also a state that will vote for Mitt not Sarah.

Mitt was all over the news the other night as he promised to campaign for our current governor (who took Huntsman’s place). I wonder if Mitt made that big splash a few days before Palin’s visit as a way to remind Utah that HE is their man and he is working for them. They LOVE Mitt here.

The fact that she hugged Palin, who has been attacking the President and essentially joined the birthers, was the end for me. I felt she gave too much credibility to Palin and didn’t ask the tough questions. The book is filled with lies and misinformation and Oprah let it all slide. I do believe that SHE and a lot of other people have been taken.

“For those who might not know, the Korean-born Moon claims that at the age of 16, Jesus appeared to him in the mountains, on an Easter Sunday, and told him he’d been selected by God to accomplish the mission Jesus himself was unable to complete before he was crucified. Moon’s task as God’s new Messiah was to create “an “automatic theocracy to rule the world.” (aka the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.) ”

“The real problem, and the real damage the daily was doing to public discourse, was that the Times, like the rest of the right-wing movement post-Obama Inauguration Day, ran off the rails in 2009. And much like Fox News, it cut whatever ceremonial newsroom ties it still had with actual journalism. ”

“The failed Times venture was nonetheless a shining example of how conservative ideologues view journalism. To them, it’s not a craft to be used for public good (or even to make money, as it turns out), but a tool to be used for mainly propaganda purposes”

According to the ADN story about changes to the Alaska ethics regulations, Jay Ramras made a great comment:

ADN says: Fairbanks Republican state Rep. Jay Ramras, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, said the state should defend officials against ethics complaints and not pay private attorneys to do so. Ramras, a frequent critic of Palin, said it would be better to let more time pass after the drama of the Palin years and not rush new regulations.

“If the attorney general opts to do this by regulation, that’s his prerogative. (The Judiciary Committee) hopes to be taking up more substantive issues than the behavior of the executive branch as it relates to family travel. And we’ll just rely on good judgment and good oversight by the public,” said Ramras.

“good oversight by the public” Surley Ramras must include public like Andree, Linda, Kim, and all the watchful bloggers and commenters.
    Yea Jay!

And defence of ethics complaints done and paid for by the state should be OK, unless the defendant has created the complaint to whitewash herself.

When I was in grad school, we could buy a whole case of over-the-hill zucchini at the grocery store for a buck. We used the zucchini on the ice cream truck guy who was also selling drugs. We could hear his obnoxious music approaching from the distance and we had lots of time to set up to rain zucchini on him from the sky (we were on the third floor). After a few of these events the drug selling guy chose to stay away from our street and sold his drugs elsewhere.

Each projectile only cost about 2 cents— one of the best investments I’ve ever made. Messed up the street, but cleaned up the neighborhood.

I must admit I could almost empathize with the guy who threw his shoes at Bush– just like with my roomates’ and my revulsion towards the drug dealer, this guy wasn’t trying to hurt Bush; he was just wanted to clean up his neighborhood. Seemed like an over- reaction to send him to jail.

Now she lives 24/7 around “horse people” and sounds like a right wing radio remix. I talked to her for an hour and asked a lot of questions – the most common one being, “Does that make sense to you?” And invariably her own statements about Obama didn’t make sense to her when she had to stop and question them. Right wing media and right wing religion have truly created an alternate reality filled with fear for unthinking people. Being around wingers I find myself thinking they’re like a bunch of Trekkies who forgot to come back from their fantasy weekend – and are expecting a Forengi to be waiting to ambush them if they let their guard down. Both the wingnut stuff and the religious stuff are constantly reinforced by repeating it to each other – constantly seeking and receiving reassurance and reinforcement. It’s downright disturbing to me.

And, Palin handlers reading this blog: the other changes she’s made because of criticism here and on other blogs is commendable–especially dressing that baby correctly for the weather and for being in public.

Now–Please! have her wash her hair! There’s enough grease in her bangs to fry up a day’s supply of McBurger’s french fries.

And Mudpuppies, whether she washes her hair or not, we’ve won! If she doesn’t wash her hair, we’ll know her handlers are saying amongst themselves, “Oh, they’ve figured out we change things when we see stuff on their blog. We can’t be transparent, so now we’ll have to stop doing what’s right when it shows up on the blogs.” If she does wash her hair, we’ll have more proof they’re reading the blog and we won’t have to look at her greasy hair any more. This may be a bit of an overstatement, but Aragon’s hair in “Lord of the Rings” looked better at its worst than her hair. And at least he had a reason. Or is she “water tap challenged?”

Oh my, Blooper. Maybe Sarah is another Lafayette Ron Hubbard.

    (Using Wikipedia’s narrative of Hubbard)

Hubbard born in Nebraska, Palin in Idaho,
Formative moment: Hubbard- ceremony with red Medicine man. Palin- ceremony with black witch-finder
Undocumentable adolescent acheivements: Hubbard- youngest Eagle Scout in US. Palin- offered steaming moose eyeballs.
Hubbard- indoctrinated by a disciple of Sigmund Freud Palin- indoctrinated by disciples of Ronald Reagan.
Hubbard’s diaries were revealed in a court case and did not substantiate his claims of esoteric foreign experiences. Palin’s emails have not substantiated her experience of seeing Russia.
Hubbard left one univerity and never completed a degree. In two years he received 3 Ds and 3 Fs. He later claimed to be a nuclear physicist.
Palin left 3 or 4 univerities and completed one degree. In 5-6 years she got one D. She later claimed to ———-

    Early careers:
Hubbard’s military career in the WW2 navy: “unsuccessful” in Naval Intelligence; he was relieved of command after a two day battle with an enemy sub the navy said was never there; and relieved of command after “gunnery practice” on Mexican territory and refusing to return to base when ordered.
Palin’s political career: she quit oil policy committee which required intelligence; quit as mayor after building stadium on land that never had a title; quit as governor after refusing to stay at base; and was denied command by votors of America.

    Later careers:
Hubbard wrote 138 novels, both science fiction and adventure. Palin wrote one adventure romance and made more money.
Hubbard’s Scientology was inaugurated with publication of his book, “Dianetics” which sold 150,000 copies. Reviews were almost entirely hostile. Wikipedia says, “Consumer Reports, in an August 1951 assessment of Dianetics, called it “the basis for a new cult”, noted its lack of modesty, and pointed out that it made generalizations without backing them up with evidence or facts”

Palin’s “Rogue” sold 1,500,000 copies, and reviews were frequently hostile. It laid the groundwork of the Palintology belief system. I don’t think Consumer Reports has reviewed it.

There are still pages of the Wikipedia story to go- I wish someone would run with this.

Palintology….is that in the urban dictionary yet? It should be.

Palintology: A belief system based on Palin’s world view that nothing to do with fact. Palintology: lies, snark, ignorance, greed, more lies, do as I say not as I do, mean junior high school girl tactics…for God and the troops.

Do you think Palin gets briefed every morning on who she should attack and what her values are for the day.

    Something like this…..
Ms. Palin…errr….Governor Palin, here is the rundown for Tuesday. You will be attacking Huckabee’s decision making, but we will do it in a soft way by adding “Bless his heart” or something like that to appeal to the Christians. After that, you will be making a statement on your facebook page about climate change. Don’t worry about the details. Just remember to say something about “hard working people who love America and don’t like big goverment steppin on their toes”. Bloggers are saying your hair looks dirty, so we are having your wig washed and set. But don’t worry, we have added a hat to today’s wardrobe to give you a youthful (cough) look. Your jet is waiting.

He should have thrown road apples. Just sayin’.

Throwable road apples are fairly hard and dried; why wait? Grab a shovel and give her a loving shovelful. Fresh and steamy… aim for her “bum pit.”

117 DesertMudpup, thanks for sharing about your friend. My relative who has gone red is always around “horse people” too. They moved to Montana so they could buy a ranch for their horses. They are really involved, so it must be pretty common in those circles to be a right-wing radio groupie. It was amazing how much she had wrong about President Obama and his birth certificate. It IS very disturbing.

But, I do like your question, “Does that make sense to you”. I’ll have to try that one.

Here is the good news for the day. I sent my sister that photo of Palin getting off of her jet and getting on her bus. I explained how Palin tried to pretend that she was taking the bus. FYI: My sister is an Evangelical Christian.

She just emailed me back and said this, I hate her!

LOL, I was rolling on the floor. Guess Palin doesn’t have the entire Evangelical market wrapped around her “bum pit”.

Forgot to add this, my sister has a special needs child and isn’t impressed with Palin’s faux concern for children with disabilities.

KateinCanada & trisha: Interesting Parallels! When I read that I kept thinking, ‘wow, delusions of grandeur and incompetence seem to be common themes here’.

Perhaps Sarah could invent and market the TeaMeter (in deference to Hubbard’s ‘E-Meter’). Instructions might read:

Select a suitable sucker, er, participant) (slack jawed, slovenly appearance helpful), and read a series of questions while measuring their response on the TeaMeter dial. Questions might include:

*”Have you donated to SarahPac lately?”
*”Have you ever shouted down someone who’s been denied their health insurance claims?”
*”Do you believe humans rode on dinosaurs”?

If the Teameter dial reads in the affirmative, you’ve got a bonafide Palintologist on your hands! Please refer them to their nearest helpful Palintology center for indoctrination and further brainwashing”.

Heh! That’s great! And thanks for includin’ the hair wash. Perhaps they can send her through a car wash in a convertible–or perhaps in the back of a pick up. :-)

And 127 Blooper. Love the Tea-meter.

Great column on Huffpo about Republicans supposedly being so mad (according to John McCain) about health care and the stimulus bill. Robert Elisberg points out how those same Republicans ignored all the lies and deception of the previous administration. It’s infuriating to see all those lies spelled out in one place. Hypocrisy is alive and well and thriving in the modern Republican party.

I, Sarah Palin, Governor of the State of Alaska, under the authority of art. III, secs. 1 and 24 of the Alaska Constitution establish the Alaska Climate Change Sub-Cabinet to advise the Office of the Governor on the preparation and implementation of an Alaska climate change strategy.

    BACKGROUND AND FINDINGS

Scientific evidence shows many areas of Alaska are experiencing a warming trend.
