Palin’s New House – (PHOTOS)
The new construction proceeds on Lake Lucille. The red house is the Palin’s “old” house, built by Todd and his buddies when Sarah Palin was mayor. The one next to it is the new digs. Not sure which one had the roof that needed fixing this Thanksgiving.
Todd’s fortress of solitude? Sarah’s Ivory Tower? The Palin family compound? You make the call…

It looks like they messed up on the turret windows.
It’s great to see all American, just a regular old hockey mom Sarah Palin finally got that mansion she’s always wanted.
nice to see the AFT funds are going to a good cause. =)
It’s ugly and too large for the space. With all the space in Alaska, they had to build it so close to the neighboring structures?? And what’s up with the windows? Lacking in style, grace or energy efficiency. Why not make the structure from one giant piece of glass? Looks awful. Maybe it’s the Palin Phallus.
I especially like how the angled windows don’t match the roof pitch. My little rant. Ugh… what schlock.
I question the purpose of two homes. I’m guessing she will auction it off on Ebay for millions of dollars. The chance to be $arah’s neighbor… priceless!
As I said on Gryphen’s site, I don’t care how they use this “compound” as long as she is hermetically sealed in FOREVER. Without internet connection also, too.
Looks like Todd has a new house with a big garage to tinker in!
Off subject- just mad at her WP op ed. Not that she was given a chace but that she isn’t being asked to debate her views. How can you be an ex-Gov and yet whatever you post on Facebook is the next big political news. Geesh- has anyone stopped to think somewhere Palin is laughing. Even bad news is a good thing. Republicans fear losing votes so we hear crickets. Democrats are annoyed so we point out how “dumb” she is. Dems we are looking the dums lately. If someone doesn’t honestly come up and say that what she says has no relevance- you will be seeing a true compound called Palin Lucille.
(I meant “chance”) Proofreading is important.
Palin built it so when she become the pres she can move DC far away from that elitist DC place where all those over-edjamacted liberals live. Then she’ll charge us for livin’ there. Wink. She’s such a smarty ;-0
She Who Was must be counting on more millions to pay for this ugly monster. If I were her neighbor, I’d be checking the closeness to property lines…or did she make that variance permanent when she sold the other lake house. Maybe this will be the “northern whitehouse” in a couple of years….NOT!!!!
Bummer when you have to pay for materials.
Looks like someone already broke her windows. The house looks, creepy. Good for Halloween. Anyway to super-glue the doors shut, when they all retire for the night?
I hope the Matsu Valley taxing authority taxes her at the correct rate!!!! I know that I am paying enough to them!!!
Looks like an alien head in the top center window – please take her away to your planet!
Wow….she is just like me. NOT.
Wow. I had to look at it again. It does look like an alien head. LOL
That explains a lot.
Yep, it’s a Palin Whack Job Compound alright! Wonder how the Samaritan’s Purse compound on the Kenai Peninsula is coming along? I agree with whoever said, don’t care how big, how gauche, how weird – just seal the doors and keep the Whackos inside!
Maybe we’ll get lucky and a mutant lake monster is growing on the bottom of Lake Lucille, feeding on all the chemicals and crap they’ve let leak into the lake. It will rise up, see its huge reflection in all those windows and attack thinking it’s another mutant lake monster.
I have a great imagination! Would make a great horror movie – one I would clap and cry out in glee while watching!
Andf here I thought it was just me and my glasses that made thos epics seem ‘off’ somehow. But after reading the other coments, maybe it isn’t my eye sight after all. AMybe the entire structure really is OFF. I would be raising all kinds of noise if I paid for something to be built and it ended up looking like that. High dollar shanty or halloween house of horrors.
Oh wait, its another freebie, isn’t it?
sorry about the typos..corrections are as follows:

Kennedy Compound?
Yes, the window line doesn’t work with the roof line, and the turret
must have a glitch with the smaller window. (attempt at conserving energy?)
Tawwd, perhaps you should go to the villages and help out, I mean, after all, you are part of their culture, and you aren’t working for a living – and they would really appreciate the assistance. But you would need to bone up on some heat conservation.
I’m going to assume the Palins got the design they wanted, but if I were the architect I’d make sure my name was never publicly associated with that house. Aesthetically it’s an awkward looking mess.
Then again, maybe there was no architect – maybe one of Toad’s buddies got a CAD program and helped him design it while they were drinking beer. Lots of beer. Too damn much beer. Besides the appearance, that would explain how the floatplane hangar ended up at the end farthest from the lake – b/c they added it last.
Renee @ 9 – I will address your point about Palin’s views and the republican’s view of her in today’s Open Thread.
Let’s call it “Shangralaska”
I am sorry, the longer I look at those pictures, the more convinced I become that not one of those workers/builders/laborers/buddies understands how to use a little tool called a LEVEL…
The more I look, the more skewed all the lines become….
I am not being snide but this is one of the ugliest houses (compounds?) I have ever seen. It reminds me of someone who got a lot of money but never had taste to begin with. Hmmmm…..sound like sister Sarah.
The Palin’s are renting the white house to the right with plans to buy it. Indeed…the Palin Compound….funny….it looks nothing as classy as the Kenndy Compound.
I like the thought of the mutant lake monster, or some deadly mold seeping through the walss, we can only hope! Any news on financing or construction of this castle, and could this be another housegate?
Did anyone catch Palin’s comments on a 3rd party bid for 2010? She said she’ll have to see how the republican party evolves but if they don’t come back to their conservative roots she may have to make a 3rd party run.
God this woman is so power hungry it’s scary. She couldn’t finish as govenor but thinks she can run the US? I wish the press would stop giving her any attention and she would shrink like a violet.
And she’s still requesting funding for SarahPac? The Queen of lies.

Good one!
I guess it goes to show how fiscally conservative she really is. She had a decent sized house so why build a new one? Oh yeah, that’s right she’s
helping the economy by stimulating jobs.
Its ugly. so what. WHO BUILT THE FIRST HOUSE?
I blew up the picture to get a real close up of the ugly compound, it looks like a few people are coming out of the new house in the first picture . To blow up pictures use the CTRL key and plus key to make bigger or to make smaller CTRL and minus key.
Well, don’t you think we should send her a nice house-warming gift? Maybe a statue her of favorite witch-doctor? Maybe some bats to fly around the house?
Is it finished? If so, it’s mighty ugly. And can someone explain to me the point of all the windows overlooking the lake when all the trees are blocking the view?
I’m not a fan of this storyline, construction of the Palins’ new home. Seems an odd choice for someone who got so angry when Rep. Doogan outed her.
I share this blog’s dim view of our dimmest governor, but I don’t think we should be tracking such a private matter. Let her have her home, there’s other stuff for us to discuss.
What a big, ugly monstrosity.
laprofesora Says: As I said on Gryphen’s site, I don’t care how they use this “compound” as long as she is hermetically sealed in FOREVER. Without internet connection also, too.
First, she has to actually return to Alaska.
I’m beginning to wonder if she’s ever planning to wrap up this book tour, because it’s provided her a good excuse to stay out of Alaska where she might have to face the latest ethics complaint, the Juneteenth civil case, and possible Federal investigation into her fund-raising, required reporting, and fund-expending.
yeah irish, that big, ugly monstrosity is her hair, not to mention that butt ugly poorly designed house.
AKM~~~Huffpo reports a bad oil spill on the North Slope….saying worst ever……
i am so glad i am not the only one that saw the alien in the window.
if she didn’t buy the house next door – she just painted herself into a corner cause now it is obvious she needs the privacy……so the owner will have the upper hand on the purchase price. or i suppose she can rent it forever.
the trees keep it from being real ugly. but the windows are wonky and the strip of “red” along the eaves (i suppose to match the original house) is a strange afterthought.
Claw Washout- she already has bats in her belfry!
What publicly paid for structure is being currently built nearby with similar materials [remember those g;ass balcony rails, etc?]?
It was obviously designed by the Palins, who could not even remember to put the garage doors under the end where the snow does NOT slide off and make a pile right where you want to drive. The whole house is skewed….windows don’t match roof line, looks like parts were tacked on (already) to a new structure, the ‘turret’ should have been taller, so when we sealed her in it she couldn’t tie enough sheets together to shimmy down to the ground.
Wow, if I had a million dollars to spend on a new McCastle, I would’ve hired a better architect. Call me crazy, but wouldn’t it make more sense if the roof had a steeper pitch? I can’t imagine trying to get up on a 2+ story roof to clear heavy snow — let gravity do the work
Also, nice industrial garage on the back – I’m sure its functional, but again … lots of money & a good architect could have resulted in a “dream” home.
Look at both houses closely.Someone used the plans from the first house and added some “modifications”.Apparently that someone was not an architect!! The stuck on turret with the missmatched window running into the siding of the main house, the mismatched windows that should be reflecting the roofline, the improper siting of the garage doors, all of this says amateur!!
What an ugly house!! Of course,I think the first one looks like a double wide on 1 story addition.
They’re some of the ugliest fricken houses I’ve ever seen, no kidding.
Bears out the old saying ‘you can’t buy good taste’, as proven by the pictures in this link of the Gridiron Dinner.
The otter purse is hideous and Todd’s cummerbund, AIP anyone?
http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2009/12/sarah_palin_at_the_gridiron_di_1.html
It’s a typical example of houses built by a segment of Alaskans who have money but disdain designers or engineers (and other experts) don’t want building codes (and other government “interference”) and don’t care what happens beyond their own property lines.
And @shooty: I can’t agree. I do think Mrs. Palin’s new house is worthy of our scrutiny. And our mockery.
First, because Mrs. Palin insists that it is her personal lifestyle and personal values that make her suited to be the “commonsense Conservative” who should lead our country. Second, because Mrs. Palin describes the majority of us as not being “real Americans.”
And finally because, absent any refutation by Mrs. Palin, I’m going to assume that donations to an illegal Alaska Fund Trust funded this house. After all, just like her unjustified per diem and the unauthorized travel for her children, this house is just Mrs. Palin’s due.
I am very slow. I just saw the alien. HA!!!
Gosh.
She IS “just like everyone else!”
The Munster residence
The new house’s “Last frontier/mix ‘n’ match” architectural style might be a bit disorienting, but it’s an improvement on the first house which look’s like a Costco tire center.
Your home is your refuge, your second skin, reflective of who you are…and when you have the type of resources these folks now have, one would think that more thought would have been brought to bear…
This house reflects chaos.
I hope that alien takes sarah up in his spaceship and keeps her as a pet.
I don’t know whether the exterior is plywood, particle board or OSB, but should it be exposed to the weather? Seems like it should be covered until they can get siding on that beast.
That place just screams “nouveau riche!”
Meanwhile, AP reports that BP says ice plugs ruptured lines on the North Slope.
And from the comments on Palin’s “op ed” in the WAPO, I think the WAPO has finally got the low information readers it’s trolling for these days. Sheeeesh!

Maybe a big ole bucket of pig sh it. But I wouldn’t watse the money on even that!
Mommom @46 – Great observation! The roof lines and dimensions appear to be a copy of one another, with the exception of the turret and different windows. Those turret windows of big/small/big/small/big/or whatever, is rather an oddity. I suppose decks will be completed in warmer weather – just a tad dangerous with those balcony doors and toddlers around.
Guess she’ll be needing to attend a few home interior parties to decorate the beast. I see shiny pink plastic butterflies in the bathroom, baby blue carpet, oh what they hey, everywhere, and a brand spankin’ from the box TV center for Toad. Trash with cash.
I guess these dwellings will be offered to the palin kids in time…keep your enemies closer. Trig will have a house by himself so she won’t have to deal with him…and the taxpayers of AK will forever be in her prayers for allowing her to screw them and thanking them for a compound all paid for…so AK, these belong to you!
I agree with quills #52.
C.Rock:
Don’t wish that on aliens. Palin as a pet to them would be like Godzilla or Mothra as a pet to us.
I apologize to the aliens.
VernD
I couldn’t believe that those upper windows are so out of synch with the roof! Too much.
OM goodness, those 3 top windows at the front eave…so obvious nobody measured anything, eh?
Just think what she would have done with the Naval Observatory house and the White House
The whole thing doesn’t make sense. Oh, its Sarah…so it never will.
Why so close to the other house? Why the basically same house only worked over a little? Is she planning on being ordered to tear down her “free” house rather than pay up ?
Hah, she plans houses like she plans her sentences, run on and disjointed and full of extras that are out of place. Whatta gal.
Maybe Greta van Susteren made a BIG offer on the red house, she loves the Palins so much, she could be their next door neighbor and comfort Tawd while Sarah is on the road so much.
Yeah, who needs architects? They’re only Ivy League spineless designers who design “elite” classy housing…thanks but no thanks.
Also.
When I look at those photos, the song from the Adams Family goes through my head.
Sing along —- I only needed to change the name, scary, huh? ha, ha.
The Palin Family
They’re creepy and they’re kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They’re all together ooky,
The Palin Family.
Their house is a museum
Where people come to see ‘em
They really are a scream
The Palin Family.
(Neat)
(Sweet)
(Petite)
So get a witches shawl on
A broomstick you can crawl on
We’re gonna pay a call on
The Palin Family
You know, I really don’t care what either house looks like. And having a daughter who has a master’s in architectural history which has influenced me and given me cause to look at the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, and subsequent modern architects, I actually don’t see anything wrong with either house (IF it suits you); BUT I do care about the timing of the building of this very large house, the materialistic aspect of it with an already existing abode right next door, and where the monies came from for either, AND most importantly, the procurement of the building materials (windows, for instance) on the original house. Housegate, baby x 2. So … is she going to raze the first house then defy anyone to prove the materials were in essence stolen?
So, this too proves that the Palin’s taste is in their mouths, also. Ewwww.
I think I read somewhere that she bought the house beside the new house, also, too.
1) Why on earth does she need a house that big? Talk about wasting resources.
2) Whoever the architect is should have his eyes examined. The whole thing clashes with its surroundings.
3) If Sister Sarah still considers herself to be just one of the regular people, then she needs to come visit me and see how a REAL American family lives.
Thoughts about pictures of houses and cummerbunds:
Here’s an air photo that shows that the Palin house is just along the shore from the Best Western. So much for wilderness.
http://www.zillow.com/blog/wasilla-alaska-real-estate-and-sarah-palins-house/2008/09/
One pro-Sarah blog has pix of her older house displayed next to one of Obama’s Chicago house. To me at least, if that was **all** I had to base my vote on, I’d vote for the person with the simpler place with lots of windows overlooking a lake.
Maybe the Heaths are coming to live there.
Thanks for the Gridiron dinner photos link. That bag- at a formal dinner, Eeeew. Sort of Ew anyway, though I know it must be Native craft and I usually value that. But otters died for this. One anyway. How many people thought “Bet she doesn’t have a Brazilian”?
And Todd sporting the Alaska flag on his cod-piece- more Eeeew. It must be a cod-piece, or else the man is way to short to wear that wide a cummerbund.
Or is he just implying he has a big dipper?
And lastly, the grey fabric over Sarah’s tummy with a distracting scarf, uh purse- reminds me of other notorious photos.
Sarah’s Slanty Shanty.
The Palins were never ordinary people. Todd would have been earning at or near a 6 figure salary for BP. That put them in the top 20% (maybe 10%) of family income in this country even before she was Governor. Now of course, they have just received a huge windfall from her book. So he quit his job and they paid for a huge new house. Like most people who get a huge windfall, they are spending it as fast as they can and will be out of money within three years.
I find it in very poor taste that vast numbers of American’s are losing their homes and the Palin’s build on to the compound. Someone who was in politics should know better. Flauting your newfound wealth is tacky and unflattering. What the old house wasn’t good enough? I bet there are thousands and thousands of people who are newly living on the streets who would have been more than satisfied with what they had. Way to go Palin, rub it in everyone’s face that you made a bunch of money by telling lies and getting even. What a country!!
before I started writin’ Plain prose and painting pictures, I was/am an architect. This monstrosity deeply offends my sense of proportion, function, and restraint.
While I don’t care for either house, the new one is a definite improvement over the old one. The big red, boring house looks like a fancy barn for cows or a barn for fancy cows..take your pick.
Guess Architect’s Digest is not one of the magazine that gets put in front of her or anything magazine that carries plans for building a home.
Did she had an architect? Or did Todd and his buddies draw up the plans?
The architect should be shot. It’s hideous.
I saw “A Face in the Crowd” on TCM again last night- a study of a demagogue, a country bumpkin with political aspirations, and the brainless mobs who followed him.
You can’t see it without noting clear parallels to Palin.
I totally agree with Mommom. They took the plans from the old house and added some crap that they thought would be cool. The top windows are done the way they are to align with the ceiling inside, which must be a “tray” style. A way to add a little bit of loft and ostentation while still having a space above that can be insulated.
April, sets up Alaska Fund Trust.
May 12, signs book deal.
June 22, pushes nation week long fundraiser for Alaska Fund Trust.
You’re telling me this compound wasn’t already in the works before all that? Sure.
By the way they don’t give away hardwood floors, that’ll be fifteen bucks for a picture.
Bystander – That’s the movie Lonesome Rhodes??? Bummed I missed it.
@67 – daisydem – i’m thinking along the same lines as you are…the red house is going to be history sometime soon.
The link to Zillow.com has another link that lists more property owned by the Palins:
http://www.milwaukeeworld.com/blog/2008/08/gov-palin-and-husband-own-5-properties.html
Looks like the clan plans to stay in Wasilla. I understand they are renting the white house to the right of the addition so they have no neighbors. They really are strange, secretive people.
Just wondering if the Alaska Trust Fund is helping to pay for the new digs. It’s starting to remind me of some dreary southern novel with generations & genrations of “family” packed into the same house so they can make each other miserable 24/7.
Seagull #80 Lonesome Rhodes is the lead character in “A Face in the Crowd” (1957), who dispenses “common sense political observations”, while living like a king in a New York hotel penthouse at the expense of his admirers.
In the movie the 40 something “hero” marries a 17 year old high school girl, and his public has no problem with it. No one cares that he is a drunken, abusive philanderer and bigamist. No rules apply to him.
Any of this sound familiar?
Oh yes, Bystander, it does. That is such a great movie. AND it’s Andy Griffith!!
RE: The Palin house, we can only hope that every time a local sees this they get pissed about the windows in the old house. All it takes is one person…..
just a hockey mom, who wants her finger on the bomb, and we cant let that happen…. and soon there will come a day, when she’ll be led away, by agents in sunglasses, until that time arrives, we’ll keep hope alive, she wont do too much progressin’.. Then we’ll keep our powder dry, as life goes on without her.
I dunno, BigPete…I think the Munsters house is just waaaay cooler.
but that might just be me…
okay, so, we know the 1st house looks like the sports complex then being built. What does the 2nd house look like? Are there any big projects going on, right now?
aha, that’s a good (and funny, thanks for making me chuckle as I just came from the Washington Post website where I had to email a shame, shame to them for publishing that idiot’s op ed) question? Anyone building something in or around Wasilla maybe should check their building supplies.
I hate to disagree with daisydem, but can’t believe Frank Lloyd Wright would
not have much good to see in this house…it doesn’t respect nor respect its
surroundings.
To me it looks like a beige barn trying to look like the White House.
oops…meant to write…the house doesn’t reFLect nor reSPect its
surroundings.
Are all the windows just a single pane of glass? It doesn’t look like
any of the windows open. I feel claustrophobic just thinking about it.
Anyone identify Todd’s building buddies?
Some Alaskans do have beautiful houses, this is not one of them-looks like a big cardboard box with windows cut out of it.
How nasty!
Can you imagine those people who have scraped together money to send to the Alaskan trust fund and sarah pac for poor sarah and her legal bills and then to see this being built?
Even before the election from what I have read, the palin’s were worth over a million dollars.
Not just your average folks.
I agree with the other posters about the future of the housegate house. Fires seem to be common in that small, small town. I bet it disappears, at $arah’s most vulnerable time (always the victim). No evidence, no crime, end of story. The new house should get the attention of some of her fans, especially the ones who have donated to her many funds and who are feeding their children rice (no, not those people, they are already over the cliff), and hopefully upset them.
Hard to believe the ugly nature of the two houses right next to each other. It doesn’t seem to me that these are architect designed homes. But you have to wonder what is going on. I would think the kids would want to leave as fast as they could. But maybe they are being financially taken care of. Hmmm?
I was under the impression that the main floor was going to be an airplane hanger. Am I missing something here????
Feng Shui misery, utter confusion, but I can see the influence of her bump-it in the design of uper windows. I’ve noticed that there is something “bunched up” in her new face, and it reflects in the so called design of the house.
Two things. First of all, the “connection” between the old red house and the new house is not apparent in picture #2 as it was in #1. Why not?
Second – guys, that second house is hideous, but I come from Chicago and most of the new McMansions in the northern and western suburbs are waaaaay uglier. I mean, much worse. My friends and I have informal competitions as to who can find the most hideous house in an area. We’re talking turrets (call me a purist, but I really don’t believe turrets belong on any building built past the 13th Century), four different stone fronts, porte-corches, and copper flashing, all on the same house.
Yeah, Palin’s house is pretty bad, but I’ve seen worse. Much worse…
Well, honestly, I’ve seen worse as well. But I think the red one is just plain ugly. The new one screams “I’m showing off that I have a lot of money!” And that seems to be what she is all about. I just don’t get the point in building the new house. It makes no sense at all unless they are planning on all of their children living there forever. Somehow, I can’t imagine that they would want to do that. But who knows?
Am not a professional, but looking at the red house. The windows are not architecturally balanced on the main floor. The center has the 4 large windows; but the extension of main floor to the right has this single doorway squeezed into a corner, whereas on the left floor extension, they squeezed a double doorway, french doors into the corner, which just offsets everything. The french doors should have been positioned in the center of the wall with side-light windows on each side. Windows and doors are all off balance.
Anyway, the new house demonstrates that Sarah had all this planned long ago, she didn’t just “happen” to quit and be a wild free spirit waiting for that door to open. Her building plans were obvious, and she still unashamedly accepts donations for her ATF. People were helping her out to become debt-free so she could pursue her vision that they shared, not so she could go on a wild spending spree.
@Trischa, and your fond memory of The Addams Family. They are now about to appear on Broadway as The Addams Family Musical. At present, it is in its “out of town try out phase” in Chicago. We saw it and loved it; others in my family were greatly disappointed. We saw Nathan Lane (and Bebe Neuwirth) who were perfect in the leads; they saw a standby for Nathan Lane.
There is one important difference. Despite being strange, offbeat and a little spooky, The Addams Family (at least on the TV series) was quite lovable. And, their haunted Victorian mansion, complete with rat-eating-plant, a hand that appeared out of a drawer, and a giant squid in the basement had far more character than any of the Palin Palaces.
Hate to be a wet blanket…..but why shouldn’t she build the house of her dreams if she can afford it? I would, if I had the money! On a lake with a view through the trees? I think that sounds great! (too bad the lake is dead….and a motel is two lots away…but that is another issue).
Seriously, I think this is just not relevant. Her house does not need to meet my architectural standards…just hers. I would rather focus on real issues like the Alaska Fund Trust – because if that is paying for the house, we have a real ethical and legal issue.
I will stand up with Rob in Ca on this one. I could give a $&*# about what she does with her house. I’m more interested in how AFT, SarahPac, and the Costco Tour play into this. Especially, the AFT. Can anyone say if funds from the AFT have been used, and if so , is that money being accounted for? Does SarahPac have to publish how their funds are used and where they go? Is there any accountability? I would really like to know.
BTW, are you all following her crazy tweets the last few days? I think she has truly lost her mind.
Hey let’s give the house the benefit of the doubt–it doesn’t have it’s siding on yet, so I’m SURE it will look MUCH better when that is done. Given the splendor that is the original spectacular red house, one can only hope the second one can compare adequately to the first. :0
Looks like Lil’ Abner’s Starter Castle to me.
To me, it’s not about the house itself. Of course she can go out and build whatever she wants. For the past year, she complained about her legal bills, and her fear that these bills would bankrupt her and her family. Many well-meaning Sarah fans acted on this, and donated to her on these premises, to help her deal with the huge legal debts. It would appear she misrepresented herself – a woman who claims possible financial ruin because of frivolous ethics complaints then goes and builds a several million dollar home adjacent to an already huge home shows a true lack accountability to her fan base.
I don’t care that she paid for this house from the proceeds of her book. She still gleefully received $5 donations from grannies all over the country.
So I want to hear from the realtors. If someone came to you and wanted to list this house, what are you going to say about it that makes prospective buyers want to have a look!?
I don’t think any grannies contributed to any of Sarah’s funds. Gramps, maybe, but no granny would believe her “wild ride” story, and thus would deem her a fraud.
I think she will tear down the old house for reasons i think we can all guess…
Eh, looks pretty much like every house on the hillside of South Anchorage: prow-front “chalet”, big windows, T-111 siding. The issue isn’t the style or size of the house (yes mcMansions in suburban Everywhere are way uglier and more wastful, IMHO). Every nouveau riche runs out and builds a big trophy house, the Palins no exception. However, I would still like to know if the first house was a kickback … oops, I mean “gift” … of Spenard Bldg Supply when they got the materials contract for the Wasilla sports complex.
I see the perfect setting for a new version of “Dallas”, only we would have to call it something like “Alaska” or “Last Frontier”. Question: who would play the role of “JR” — and who would shoot “JR” and why? Oh, the dramatic possibilities with 5 generations of the Heath-Palin clan living together in “the compound”.
Oh, well, for me it comes down to this: married forty years, raised four kids, worked every one of those years ( as did spouse!)and we don’t have a multiplex.
Where have I gone wrong? I voted, I paid my taxes, I gave to the less fortunate, I worked hard, and we educated kids well.
Did I not wink enough?
I guess I was too busy……..
The house is just plain weird!! It is a smudge-pod of everything in the book that doesn’t fit.
I see where she is questioning the Polar Bear issue. She thinks she knows it all, but actually doesn’t know squat!
Another butt ugly house.
It’s pretty crazy how close to the lake both houses appear to be. Does this lake ever have high water years?

Wow. I’m going to not write a book too so I can get together the kind jack you need to build a crib like that.

I share this blog’s dim view of our dimmest governor, but I don’t think we should be tracking such a private matter. Let her have her home, there’s other stuff for us to discuss.
******************************************************************************
I agree, Shooty! She and her “house” can rot! There are many more important issues to tackle. Maybe if we all just ignore Quittypants, she will be a mensch and just go away.
There are some feature similarities to the Governor’s Mansion in Juneau, probably an undersight – with the Turret added as an afterthought.
Also, too, some have commented on the lines of the structure – if the soil below is not properly compacted during the seasonal changes in Alaska (work done by amateurs) then sagging quickly occurs.
My thoughts:
I am sure she built the house with her book advance. The most precious part of the whole mess is the land that it is built on. Lakefront property in or out of a municipality is very expensive! That much lakefront property is waaaaaaaaay out of my price range and always will be. But SP has always (and always will be) been about the money. She will collect it with her fund and her book and anything else she can get her hands on. She hit the jackpot with McCain and she knows it. She will milk it for all it is worth. Anyone stupid enough to give her money is just flushing it down the toilet.
She can build whatever monstrosity she wants. I just hope that the Palinbots begin to see that she is NOT like everyday, Joe six-pack Americans. She is not worried about where her next meal will come from. She is not worried about having warm coats for her kids. She is not worrying about whether the next paycheck will keep her small business running. She is not worried about medical bills or how she can pay the doctor’s bill when she doesn’t have health insurance. She is not worried about losing her home.
I dearly hope that SOMETHING keeps her up at night. She cannot relate to ANY of the problems in this country.
I’m wondering if they are going to Tyvek the sides and leave it that way for awhile to keep the assessor at bay and avoid paying any taxes on this….Now THAT would be like the SP we all know (Alaskans do this all the time by the way). Can’t be paying any of those horrible taxes……
I didn’t see the pistures of the otter purse but I find the idea of it offensive. Many people up here wear some fur to stay warm. That does not include a purse. That, to me, is just the waste of a life. Pro-life anyone??????
I have to agree with what someone else observed – water will rise and doesn’t that put their fancy new digs in a bit of peril?
@#112 who asks: “So I want to hear from the realtors. If someone came to you and wanted to list this house, what are you going to say about it that makes prospective buyers want to have a look!?”
“Situated on forest-like grounds amid towering pines sits this stately lakefront estate in Alaska. Built in 2009 by noted home-builders Todd Palin & Buddies, this six bedroom, five bath Tudor features a turret, an airplane hangar, custom-crafted amenities and a gourmet kitchen with an eight-burner stove for cooking a moose chili dinner for up to thirty guests. Although there is no library, a rumpus room and built-in beer cooler provide endless opportunities for teen trysts and wild Wasilla parties. Sold “as is,” and no warranties are implied or granted. A fee simple deed excludes oil and gas rights, water rights, and mineral rights. Owners reserve right to cancel sales contract depending on outcome of 2012 U.S. elections, and/or if Alaska has NOT seceded the Union by January 12, 2012. For a private showing, contact broker or Bristol Palin – easy to show, she is always home. Do not show between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., as babies are asleep. Selling agent agrees to donate 95% of his or her commission to the AK Fund Trust to assist with owner’s multi-million dollar debt due to frivilous ethics complaints. Plane and boat negotiable. Serious inquiries only. Listed by Lori in Los Angeles at $7,500,000 due to celebrity/grifter status of owners.”
to lovemydogs…love all your thoughts…the tricks to avoid paying property taxes, the wearing fur/pro-life contradiction, the worry-freeness of palin, the milking it/mccain jackpot…all of it! I don’t think anything keeps her up at night, b/c she has no soul.
Listing addendum “A” to #127: Buyer to assume any and all delinquent property taxes and/or special assessments. As a buyer incentive, seller to grant honorary membership in Alaska’s A.I.P. Please note that the Pie Spy satellite is excluded, but seller will leave high-powered binnoculars to view Putin’s rearing head.
Lainey: Oh rest assured, she has a soul and her karma credit card is in the red. I don’t have to guess where that soul will be going. Let’s just say she won’t have opposable thumbs in the next reincarnation.
“The House That You Betcha Built”
Hilarious that they have neighbors about 15 feet away on both sides.
127 lori in los angeles
LOL! Almost snorted my tea. What a great listing! Who pays for your flights to show it?
One thing, though. It DIDN’T make me want to see it.
Looking at that place with mismatched windows, triangle windows that don’t match roof lines, and a turret that looks like something from “Rapunzel” or the WWI Port of San Diego building (no windows down low to resist bombing) made me think of a great Johnny Cash song, “One Piece At a Time.”
I’d get it one piece at a time
And it wouldn’t cost me a dime
You’ll know it’s me when I come through your town
I’m gonna ride around in style
I’m gonna drive everybody wild
‘Cause I’ll have the only one there is a round.

If you aren’t familiar with this classic, it more than adequately describes how it looks like they got their supplies, even though it talks about a car.
There’s another “left behind” cover in here somewhere
Dang. That’s a WWII (that’s 2) Port of San Diego Building.
If you look at the houses they are the exact same basic frame. She could have changed the first house for about a tenth of the cost. Seems stupid to me.
Stop picking on Sarah, she is so well known for her kind heart and philanthropy – isn’t she just trying to make enough room for Joe the Plumber??
I have to say I’m amazed the Palin manse is right on the street without a gate or high fence to keep the press and the curious away. Maybe, despite her derision of the press, she can’t live without their attention and she’s keeping herself available to the cameras. I mean, those big windows are just begging for a paparazzi’s telephoto lens.
You are seeing pictures taken from the frozen lake in front of the house. AKM
The old house will become the hockey rink for Trig and Tripp, you betcha!
Lori in LA, that was perfect! You are the best!
Bakers Dozen, are you back in our area? If so, I’m up for getting together.
Some of you have said you could care less about her house. Not me, cause I can see it from my less-than-1000-sq.-ft. cabin. The place is a disgusting monstrosity. As far as speculation on who would ever buy a house like this……..I’m thinking some church out there in the Valley probably has a Jerry Prevo wannabee who could charm his congregation into buying it (and the plane).
This woman is trying to ruin my life in more ways than one, and now I will have to plant a huge clump of spruce trees in front of my cabin to block the latest addition. I’d look the other direction, but that end of the lake has the barren gravel hill topped by the four lane highway expansion that she pushed for. And no, the lake never rises and overflows it’s banks, but it is a “dead” lake due to highway run-off, lawn fertilizer, etc.
When does the cee-ment pond go in?
i exagerated my drawing on this, wish i knew how to dump my art here along the flats..
With the rumors of Sarah and Todd not actually being together that much, could it be that they’ve decided to live “separately”? Even if there’s no divorce, if each party had their own house, they can just live separate lives and just come together for events. Todd goes out and “dates” discreetly, and maybe Sarah too, and they both stay together for the money and to keep each other from having to testify against the other.
Todd knows where the bodies are buried, and so does Sarah. So instead of a formal divorce that may expose them to more than it’s worth, they just build a house for whichever partner decides they want out.
Is it just me , or did I see a Taco Bell sign flashing in a window ??
Who wants to bet she builds a church next devoted to the rehabilitation of the poor misguided homosexual?
Bess – My thoughts follow along with yours. I think one of the structures will be used for offices, meetings, church gatherings – something of that sort. She has her finger in so many pies now (what’s her sky-pie thingy for old folks called?), that she needs a central location for Meg to run interference for her many interests. I next see her forming some corporation that will be church-related and then she will qualify for tax exempt status.
Cynthia Collier @136 – When construction was first started on this new one, Gryphen at IM had some photos that showed the driveway with a gate – and a homemade No Trespassing sign. With all that money she’s raking in and her demands for privacy, I’m surprised she hasn’t hired a private security firm yet.
I like the house, but it seems out of place next to the red one. God bless her for being able to buy and build a new mcmansion, but perhaps she should have paid off her legal bills she was complaining about, first?
Maybe I have that whole budget thing bass akwards.
The red house I can see it being torn down. Too much controversy over the building supplies. Plus, it is too exposed. I can see trees being put up for added privacy or used as parking space for her many visitors. The white house I can see it being used as a place to Worship and have Religious leaders over and they will also have a place to sleep. Can also, be used as a guest house. Her family is contained in the larger home with a big enough place for more formal gatherings. The back door makes it easier for those in the White House to come to the Big House. The trees will block their view. As her child, I would be plotting my escape. As her husband, she would be paying me a weekly salary to stay with her.
“Oh, you’ll take the old house,
And I’ll take the new house,
And I’ll be in Scotland afore ye…”
Oh, wait the job of Last King of Scotland is already taken. And I’ve mixed my metaphors terribly.
Simpy said…. there’s no accounting for taste.
On another topic – I have a feeling that $P’s next move will be the setting up of some type of charitable organization for disabled adults and children. That way she can proclaim her “love” for Alaska, while guaranteeing the best care for Trig. just a thought…
It occurs to me that in order to properly use the aircraft hanger, the old house has to be demolished or moved. Am I wrong?

If so, will there be a lakeside bonfire to get rid of the evidence that Spenard sluffed materials from the Sport Center over to the Cracker Box?

While I don’t care for either house, the new one is a definite improvement over the old one. The big red, boring house looks like a fancy barn for cows or a barn for fancy cows..take your pick.
———
I would never put cows in that barn.
Think the new house is big enough to hold her much-expanded ego?
They both look hideous.
The Palin mansion comes as no surprise to me. SP has the Wal-Mart mentality and taste to go with it. The Palin Saga is just a new version of “The Beverly Hillbillies”. Too bad for us all that it isn’t a TV show that can be canned! Elly Mae Clampett for President??? NO WAY!!!!! Wait, if it comes down to the two…………
Oh crap. Does this mean she’s coming BACK?
Bummer.
These appear to be from the “square feet equals architecture” school. To be fair, the climate does discourage flamboyance (although this is Anchorage, not Nome).
The US is a great country, where a bit of celebrity allows you to build a custom house. I guess.
What an ugly-ass house. Proof, if any was needed, that money does not necessarily guarantee taste.
I guess to each his or her own,but I would want windows that open and none of those at least on the front look like they do..I was driving up north in my state and came across some almost completely square house that were the ugliest thing I had ever seen a whole group maybe 15 or 20.One story later found out they were houses built for lower income people to buy and looks were not important. But they did have windows that looked like they could be opened. My taxes were raised even though the first year we did not have the siding on yet.I guess because we have safety guide lines ect it makes a difference. They just taxed the new house,we remolded from scratch except for the floors and frame.from my mortgage.Of course we had to have some one come in and approve what we did or the builder sign off.
