Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Going Rouge in My Mailbox and on Firedoglake!

goingrougebook

I finally got my copy of Going Rouge today! I opened my mailbox to find the big white envelope I’d been waiting for. I flipped through and there was my essay – the last entry in the “Half-Baked Alaska” chapter – pages 109-117 to be exact. I am immediately preceded by Alaskans Elstun Lauesen and Shannyn Moore. I am in good company.

It was definitely a little surreal to see my name in a book at all, nevermind one with Sarah Palin on the cover. I never would have imagined in a million years…

You can order your own copy of Going Rouge – An American NightmareHERE, and it is now also available in bookstores!

Do it quick because on Saturday from 5-7pm Eastern time (2-4 Pacific – 1-3pm Alaska) I’ll be your host on the Firedoglake book salon! My guests will be Colin Robinson from O/R books, and Richard Kim of The Nation who edited Going Rouge with Betsy Reed. It should be a lot of fun, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll have an introduction posted on Firedoglake and then we’ll be taking your questions and inviting you to join in the discussion.

It’s a fantastic book, and an innovative publishing company. All we need now is you! I’ll put up a post on Saturday with the specifics.

I’ve already pored through it, and beLIEVE me, it’s a whole lot better than that “other” book. (shudder)

Woke to quite a storm. Winds are gusting to 60mph and there’s pretty much no visibility. Lightning & thunder. Porch furniture has decided to wander off somewhere down the street. Furnace keeps blowing out. Buffalo winter is officially here! How’re things going for my fellow WNYers ? I’m over at the W. Seneca border about 2 miles in from Lake Erie.

Gonna start a big pot of veggie stew or maybe chili.

Very good article about Palin and her contradictory standards for publishing & news. Then it goes on to talk about “Going Rouge”

    http://bit.ly/60soKC

***Seemingly from Palin’s perspective, when media coverage of her patriotism and family values is reported, the media has integrity. But when media coverage questions the disparity between her public image and her private actions, the media is unfair and obsessed. Palin is hardly the first celebrity to curse the source of their fame, while enjoying all the positive benefits of it at the same time. Reportedly Palin has seven million reasons to be grateful that anyone with press credentials ever got obsessed enough to make her a household name.

“We’re seeing this argument take shape where anyone who’s critical of Sarah Palin is portrayed as launching unfair personal attacks on her,” said Betsy Reed, co-editor of the Palin counter-memoir, “Going Rouge.” “It’s really important to tell the other side of her story… and not to fall prey to the Sarah Palin branding machine,” said Richard Kim, the other co-editor in a recent interview with the online political publication, “TruthOut.”****

Also, turns out Barbara Walters did not decide to go with Palin as the “Most Fascinating Person ” but chose instead — Michelle Obama. HA!!

As soon as AKM put up the first story of Going Rouge, I clicked on the O/R link she provided and pre-ordered. They started shipping on the 17th of November. The one I got is a soft cover (full size, not paperback) so the only way to get rid of her photo is to tear off the front. I’m trying to come up with some other photo to glue over it – maybe I’ll print off one of AKM’s lovely snow scenes she posts!

Yes, some of the essays are dated, some written during the campaign and prior to the election. However, the timeline of the older ones doesn’t take away from the overall quality and good-read of the book. Although all of the essays related to Palin, there are a wide variety of issues/topics connected with her, such as the polar bears, troopergate, religion and her church, etc. So it isn’t just one person after another bashing Palin on the same few issues.

Thankfully, it does NOT come across at all like Palin’s version. Each and every essay is a thoughtful and articulate piece, with substantiated facts, and with the exception of a few F-bombs, it is an outstanding book. Obviously, none of the submitters were/are Palin fans, yet each manages to get his/her feelings and viewpoints across without the nastiness that Palin’s book is so full of.

I very highly recommend it for the $21.00 price that included shipping.

BuffaloGal, Thanks for that link. Great article. That perfectly describes Palin’s love/hate relationship with the media.

It reminded me of a comment I read yesterday on a scientific site (blasting Palin for her latest rant). I thought it was such a perfect description.

They said Palin obviously loves the attention but it’s also very obvious that she will not tolerate anyone questioning her…..She wants control and power without accountability. They added, she’s a grifter.

    Grifter:
Slang. 1. a person who operates a side show at a circus, fair, etc., esp. a gambling attraction.
    2. a swindler, dishonest gambler, or the like.

    Perfect description!

On a different note: I read a few weeks ago (in a tiny article) that Palin was to be in Salt Lake City last night. I live in SLC, and I’m not sure she was here.

I have been waiting for the media blitz but I never heard a peep leading up to this blessed event. I didn’t hear anything on the news last night either.

Maybe someone whispered in Palin’s ear that Mormon’s live here so she cancelled. Or, the media didn’t cover it or didn’t cover it with great fanfare.

I’ll go check the online Trib and and see if she was in town and if they covered her visit.

But seriously, if she WAS in town, she did not get very good coverage. This is red, red, red state, but it’s also a Mitt Romney state.

Open Thread! I’M CANCER FREE! After all of the biopsies and such it is not a liver tumor. Short story . . . got sick, probably pancreatitus. I’ve had HCV for over 35 years, and for some reason blood clots formed in the liver portal vein causing an abnormality in the liver. During ultrasound it looked like a mass with veins protruding. With the contrasts in cat scans and MRI’s it looked just like a cancerous tumor. So everyone in the hospitals said, “Well, it’s liver cancer.” The oncologist kept having doubts because I still had a fever after one and a half months. So the last biopsy found no sign of a tumor though with the ultrasound the doc was using they could see it. After more tests a month later . . . the abnormality is smaller, the “veins” of the tumor were smaller, and the pet scan should NO CANCER.

Thank the Creator. Of course, I still have to see the liver specialist about the blood clots and the shape my liver is in, but hey!!!!!

What a great miracle. Thanks to all of you who sent hugs and good thoughts and prayers. Melanie

The underside of modern American politics — raw ambition, manipulation, and deception — are revealed in detail by (author’s) riveting account of a presidential hopeful’s meteoric rise and scandalous fall. Like a non-fiction version of All the King’s Men, The Politician offers a truly disturbing, even shocking perspective on the risks taken and tactics employed by a (wo)man determined to rule the most powerful nation on earth.

Tnx, Polly. I liked this Guardian reporter’s take on Obama’s Nobel speech:

    A Thoughtful, Honest, Nobel Lecture

“So if the speech wasn’t designed to pander to an international audience, and it wasn’t constructed to help him politically at home, then what was it for? Well, here’s why I like the guy.

Maybe it was designed to … be truthful about the world as he sees it, and to be honest with the world and with posterity about the complexities we face. Imagine that. There are any number of criticisms to be made of Obama’s foreign policy decisions, and his major gambits – rebalancing the Middle East, negotiating with Iran and of course doubling down in Afghanistan – may yet fail. But at the very least, here we have a leader who is thoughtful and intellectually honest and won’t insult your intelligence. That already constitutes a success of some kind.”

All the comments on this story are negative toward Palin. ha, ha! The rest of the story is about her fans. They are the usual suspects who like her because she is pretty, cool, strong (?)….

My belief.. people like that have very low self esteem because they are trying to feel better about themselves because “they won”, “they were first”, “they beat you”. They can’t be happy with themselves, they need to lower other people to feel better about themselves.

Here’s the full transcript of her interview on a radio show (not sure what/which etc.) I’m just cutting and pasting from another poster on another blog. It is just.too.much.

    Transcript:

Palin: “I liked what he said, in fact, I thumbed through my book quickly this morning to say ‘Wow, that that sounded really familiar’ because I talked in my book too about the fallen nature of man and why war is necessary at times and history’s lessons when it comes to knowing what it is that we engage in warfare and a couple of the other things he said were I thought, wow, those were a ni-nice, a broad message so broad I just wrote about those and a lot of Americans right now are getting to read off of my take on when war is necessary. Personally, of course, as a blue-star mom, I and so many other blue-star families we worry about the safety of our soldiers, but my son an tens of thousands of other men and women of America have made the right decision to put some things on hold at this point in their lives so that they can serve something greater than self. I’m so extremely proud of him and all of our troops, and personally of course I’m on my knees more than ever praying for his safety along with all of his fellow troops and of course war is the last thing any American I believe wants to have to engage in but its necessary. We have to stop these terrorists over there. We’ve learned our lesson from 911. George Bush did a great job of reminding Americans every single day he was in office what that lesson is, and by the way I’d like to see President Obama follow more closely in the footsteps of George Bush and his passion for keeping the homeland safe, his passion for respecting honoring our troops, and I certainly believe that the mission is necessary right now, both in Iraq and the surge strategy that’s needed in Afghanistan.

Awesome news…and isn’t it great to get it just before the holidays!

BuffaloGal – How are things in your neck of the woods tonight? I’m in a NW suburb of Roch and we didn’t get much total snow accumulation, but the wind was blowing so hard this afternoon that visibility was down to less than 1/10 mile. When I headed home about 3:00 there were already about 40 accidents on the roads and rush hour hadn’t even started yet. I was supposed to have an event at school tonight but it was cancelled, thank goodness! I got to come home, get into my nice warm fleecies, have a leftover chicken enchilada and curl up with my computer mouse. If it’s this nasty here, I can only imagine what it’s like closer to Lake Erie.

Same in Salt Lake. Most of the comments are not positive toward Palin. Someone is creating a lot of hype around her, but 1,000 people in a big city will NOT an election win. I was reading that “she signed hundreds of books” in SLC yesterday and the crowd was thin. Utah is so RED even the rocks are red, so that was a poor showing.

I just came back from two days up in the Big City, Phoenix. Because we have no bookstores in a 30-mile radius here, I made tracks to the first big book store I found, which happened to be a Borders. (Hey, even a big chain store looks good when you’re as book-deprived as I am!) They had no big flashy displays of Scarah’s book, which initially cheered me a great deal. However, I sound found small piles of them scattered around the store. I made sure to turn over the top copy in every pile I saw. At one table, they were included with several stacks of biographies and autobiographies of other individuals, and RIGHT NEXT to the Scarah stack were several copies of a Molly Ivins bio. Ha-ha, I chortled, as I buried the Sacarah books underneath several volumes of Molly. I could swear I heard a Texas-accented voice chuckling at me from more celestial regions. I am sure that Borders employess are still finding upsdie down copies of Scarah’s book all over the store and wondering what happened. It ain’t much, folks, but it sure felt good.

I bought a copy of Going Rouge at our local bookstore. I have been devouring it at a rapid pace. I was so excited to see that several of my very favorite pieces that were written during the campaign were included. Such lovely memories of blasting those links to everyone I knew. It’s like a good bottle of wine that can be savored over and over. AKM could probably make a book of mudpups comments over the past year (esp some of the juicy rants).

I was waiting at an appointment today and indulging in the guilty pleasure of a People magazine. While trying to find the page with pictures of Johnny Depp (true eye candy for me) what do my wondering eyes did appear but a story on SP entitled “She’s not quitting, she’s reloading” (A papa Heath quote I believe). It was a short fluff piece with lots of pictures (some from her book). But what really caught my eye was at the end there was a quote about a prayer that she and Toad say “everynight”. Classic Palin—”May we always be happy-and may our enemies know it”. Now there is a good christian thought for the day, eh? They really haven’t evolved past high school (either one of them).

And how dare she even remotely try to compare her incompetent self to President Obama. I think that our involvement in these wars is entirely GW’s fault (and I emphasize the word fault). He rushed in without blinkin because Cheney wanted it. I think that we should all want to live in a world without wars. Unfortunately it is people like SP that propagate wars in this world. I wonder how many Americans would be all for these wars if we had a draft?

You muddies will like this… I went to the Elmendorf AFB base exchange store today, after hearing on the local Anchorage news that $arah will do a book signing event this Sunday (13th) afternoon. I saw the pile of her books on a display table right inside the entrance. Picked up a book, taped a correct-sized picture of the Going Rouge cover over the regular book cover, set the modified book standing up next to the “real” one on top of the table-full of her books, and grabbed a Blackberry photo, with the sign advertising the upcoming book signing date in the background. This is sort of like the Brian-in-the-photo pics AKM has collected, but I unfortunately did not have Brian or his clone handy to be in the picture. Here’s hoping AKM gets my email of the photo and can post it for a chuckle.
The Elmendorf signing will not be open to the general public, just those with regular base access. Sorry, I don’t think I can stand to wait around all morning for a five-second thrill… (I was thinking, as I’m sure others have, it would be fun to slip her book jacket over Going Rouge, and get her to sign the “alternate”, but someone mentions up above that the handlers are already beating that game by taking your book and giving you another signed official one, so it would be a bust!!)

What I’m finding most interesting about the book is not the light it shows on Sarah Palin, but who her supporters are and why she appeals to them. Combine that with certain chapters from What Hath God Wrought [a history of the US from 1815-1848] and a rather scary picture emerges. That era ended in the Civil War. If history doesn’t repeat itself, but echoes, we face some frightening times.

I got my copy of Going Rouge yesterday as well… one note of caution… try not to read it before going to sleep… gave me nightmares! Otherwise it’s very comforting, and… scary at the same time.
    thanks again Mudflats!

Palin might be surprised to learn that the hospital she is fundraising for runs counter to her professed beliefs:

    – St. Peter’s Hospital is a public hospital within the national Canadian healthcare system. In Palin’s worldview, universal, government-insured health care is “socialism.”

    – St. Peter’s Hospital performs abortions. Palin, a staunch anti-choice zealot, has protested outside of abortion clinics and has refused to denounce abortion clinic bombers as terrorists.

    – St. Peter’s Hospital, through its Centre for Studies in Aging, offers “advanced directives.” Palin tried to derail health reform earlier this year by falsely labeling advanced directive reimbursements as “death panels.”

If you truly believe you are carrying out divine will, then there is no need for restraint.” Remind anyone of a certain someone and I don’t mean Bush either, maybe that’s why she thinks it is her right to make things up. or exaggerate.
Newfoundland Dogs Rule Glad to hear it wasn’t cancer and pray you will will get thru this.;I also pre ordered the book when it was first mentioned.I am not fond of reading non fiction but found as with the last few I bought this fall once I started I could not stop..I also kind of put it out their that the bots should read this book as it gives the other side and is not for the most part one sided.IMO It is also not a palin bashing book despite it’s name.I went to a site I know they read at and gave the name and how to order it and told them if someone read palins book they should also read this one and get some perspective.
