Open Thread – Ice Fog
It’s been very foggy over the past couple days. That pea soup fog that rolls in, slows traffic and gives everything a hushed and eerie silence – the feeling that something might happen. I took this picture just before sunset. At least, I think it was just before sunset. It’s hard to tell what the sun is doing up there or where exactly it is.
A lovely side effect of a couple days of “ice fog” like this, is that the cold temperatures plus the humidity in the air will put a thick layer of frost on every twig, and blade of tall grass, and stalk of cow parsnip and spruce needle, and chain link fence. Tomorrow, it will look like an army of over-zealous elves with thousands of cans of fake snow marched through town and completely overdid it. My mission then will be to get some pictures of this ‘hoar frost’ before a breeze comes along and breaks the spell.

Damn hoars and their frost…
Breathtakingly Beautiful!
Thank you.
love it
AKM : It is hard for me to comprehend the intense cold in Alaska.
Being an Australian .You are on top of the world and I am a Antipodean.
I love your Photos they are beautiful. I know what a hoar frost is correct me if I am wrong .Icicles on vegitation? .Please get some Photos of that as it .
Magical I would think, like on a Christmas tree.
as it. sounds like somethimg Sarah would write LOL
Great picture, as usual, AKM. Can’t wait for the rest!
Coolio Julio !
I was away yesterday so this may have already been posted:
http://trueslant.com/conorfriedersdorf/2009/12/10/the-exaggerated-victimhood-of-sarah-palin/
It is an excellent piece that counters the victimhood of Palin and deserves to be read by as many people as possible (especially those with a slightly open mind who might otherwise think that poor little Sarah is being pounced upon unfairly).
looks beautiful to me
Ah……I well remember the ice fog and hoar frost from my years in Alaska. The most amazing thing about it is just as AKM mentions – the muffling of sounds and an eerie silence with touches of echoes.
Good link OMG – If only those who really need to read it would! Poor Continetti has it really bad for her. I’ve read some of his articles and he really does believe Palin is being persecuted!
A group in Virginia has filed a challenge against the IRS regarding Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University getting tax exempt status. The brief was filed back in May, yet this is the first I’ve seen of it in any media. The question of why these religious groups can involve themselves in politicals yet keep their status has been asked over and over. Maybe this time something will be done. Can you imagine all the revenue that would be generated if these church groups started paying taxes?

Apparently, the CHIP program is in danger under current health reform proposals. I received the following email, should anyone be interested in contacting their state senators:
“Tell your Senators to Support Senator Bob Casey’s (D-PA)
Children’s CHIP Amendment to Prevent Millions of Children from Being Worse Off After Health Reform – Please take five minutes to help millions of children. Call your Senators today: Tell them to co-sponsor and vote “yes” on Senator Bob Casey’s Children’s CHIP Amendment (#2790). Urge them to tell Senate Majority Leader Reid how important the amendment is for children in your state. Call toll free at 1 (877) 233-9025 to connect with the Capitol Switchboard and ask to be connected to your Senator’s office.”
No snow here in southwestern KY, but we’ve had extreme cold – in the teens, which we rarely experience. I’m quite happy to watch the snow on television instead of out of my window. I hope BuffaloGal survived the snow blowing into her house yesterday!
Happy Friday to all.
Ah ice fog! Good times! (But, AKM, as a former Fairbanks resident, I was taught that ice fog was what we had when temperatures went to 30 below or thereabouts.)
My first winter in Fairbanks, when we had our first bout of ice fog, my (new) spouse said, “Oh, you should drive us to work. MY car doesn’t work well when it’s this cold.” Imagine my shock when I went out and tried to drive through what I can only describe as cotton batting, where you cannot see the car in front of you. Our tires would be frozen square and make thunking noises as we slowly, slowly, slowly made our way down the road.
22 degrees F this morning in NYC and windy! Gosh it’s cold.
Love the picture – it’s a fairyland.
Gryphen and Celtic Diva had done write-ups about their lunch yesterday with Palin’s attorney. I wonder how long before she fires him for consorting with the enemy.
TVF is charming and attractive and has the dead eyes of a snake. (I apologize to snakes for comparing them to SP’s attorney.)
Liz I #10 – I have kids in FBKS, and what you say is true. In Bethel, all we had was horizantal snow – the wind blew so hard there was never any ice fog!
GreatGranny & LiLadyNY: I seriously doubt TVF will be fired. Sarah brought up the birth-certificate recently, then TVF just happens to ‘spontaneously’ bring it up in conversation to ‘the enemy’?
I can smell what the Palin is cookin’….
Also, too AKM: Please use the way-up-close lens when you take a picture of the hoarfrost!
May the sun rise or set today upon the hoar frost, and may you get a picture of that magical crystalline world!
I have seen it only once in all its glory, and then only for a couple of hours towards sunset as we were driving West along coastal North Germany into the Netherlands. That was on February 9, 1066!!!
The synapses in my brain still get excited thinking about it…;-)
That year typo was funny. I went to a pub in Nottingham called A Trip to Jerusalem that has been there since 1066. One of my mom’s cousins lives in Nottingham and took us there. When we ordered, the American guy in front of us ordered a pint of beer, but pronounced it to rhyme with “mint”. It was all we could do to keep from laughing ourselves silly, but when we got to our table, we completely lost it. We still laugh about ordering a “p/mint” of beer, years later.
@15 Mona Lisa
Precisely! I don’t trust either of them.
Mona Lisa@15. Palin did not mention a birth certificate. She said “which we’ve done,” as if that was proof enough. So there, I’m Trig’s mom. When will this crap end with her.
Ah cool picture AKM…Looks so peaceful..Raining here this morning…
I agree about that lunch that they had with VanFlea. I think he is a snake in the grass, and is up to something with his comment, what do you want…a Birth Certificate?
I don’t believe for a minute that he was “surprised” by anything that they said to him about Sarah. I think VanFlea was gathering information from them on which direction they were going, so he could cover his clients arse. I think he wanted to know….what they knew.
I hate to say it, but I think they got punked. I’m not sure the realize who they are dealing with, Sarah and her evil band of brothers.
For me, a birth certificate isn’t enough. I would need further prood like DNA, statement from hospital and doctor…something else since she could make up a birth certifcate since there is NO record at the hospital of his birth (at least not any public record).
pvazwindy… it will end when Levi opens that Pandora’s Box on her ‘ness.
trisha… please don’t tarnish the ‘band of brothers’ phrase. It’s too important to those military vets and active duty members who have lived and are living it.
How about…
Band of Brothelers?
Band of Botherers?
Band of Buffoons?
Band of Blighters? (for our Brit pups)
Band of Bigots?
Just sayin’…
Here is the deal, Palin is palling around with Nixon insiders who (as we know) are masters at a cover up*. These guys are pros and are dirty snakes in the grass. I don’t think that Diva and Gryphen are a match for the new group that she is palling around with now.
So, I would guess that he got more out of them, than they got out of him.
I don’t mean to sound mean, but something doesn’t smell right about this whole thing. When I read the recount of the lunch, I got a sick feeling that something wasn’t right. It’s like Palin sent him across enemy lies to gather intelligence from the locals. I hope I’m wrong, and I wish them luck with their investigation, but they need to be wary.
*in the good ol days the WaPo actually exposed these people (and Nixon) but we can all see that those days of investigative journalism are gone. Today, they publish facebook pages as OpEd’s. Shameful.
Regarding Van Flein’s lunch with Gryphen (I haven’t read Celtic Diva’s writeup yet, just Gryphen’s)…
I would not say Gryphen was punked. However, Van Flein played innocent in order to find out what Gryphen knows. Nothing nefarious there, I don’t think, but I think that Van Flein found out a lot about what Gryphen does or does not know. I don’t think, on the other hand, that Gryphen found out anything new.
Looks to me like Van Flein totally owned that conversation. And he can now himself presented for the first time in a somewhat sypathetic way on the blog.
brrrrrrr
Nice shot as usual, AKM.
PS: check in box box. Something I think you’ll enjoy seeing is sitting in it!
Over at HP’s thread (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/10/palin-poll-struggles-amon_n_387501.html) re: Palin polling problems (hey, its the PPP syndrome!), this is one of the responses given to a pro-SP’r claiming oh you’re scared (Deninor, 9:15PM, 12/10/09):
MillinMn (9:31pm, 12/10/09):
Palin does her own portrait-painting. She needs no help from the left to look bad.
I personally resent her hypocrisy – pushing abstinence only sex education, but failing to supervise her own minor teenage daughter, who becomes pregnant.
I resent her suggesting that some of us – who live on the East and West coasts, or perhaps just believe differently from her – that we’re not “Real Americans.”
I resent her political gibberish being taken seriously by anybody – she is literally incoherent, and people ignore it as tho she were the emperor wearing no clothing -
I resent that a major US political party nominated her to be Vice President, when she doesn’t know the most basic things about our government, Constitution, political processes.
I resent that she quit her governorship, bailing to make more cash in the short run. When money is your prime motive, it bodes poorly for political governance.
I resent that she used her public office to pursue personal vendettas
I resent that she – as mayor – instituted policies that required rape victims to cover the costs of their rape investigation kits
I resent that no explanation was ever given how they afforded the really cool house they built on the water on the salaries they were earning at the time
I resent that people continue to give this woman a microphone, as if her thinking is worth sharing
… something along those lines.
Yup, sez it all…
I know that AK is damn cold this time of year, but I just noticed that it is colder here in northern NM than it is in Anchorage right now (my thermometer reads much lower than Accuweahter’s). The overnight lows are about the same here in Los Alamos, but in Red River and Eagle’s Nest, NM it was about -12 to -16 last night. Brrrr!
As for Gryphen’s and Celtic Diva’s lunch with the Wan Flea, he is nothing more than a paid shill for his client, which is exactly what lawyers are supposed be. His client is an arrogant buffoon, but even narcissistic imbecilic grifters are entitled to legal representation. The Wan Flea may indeed been somewhat surprised by some of what he heard from our friends, but as his paycheck is signed by Psychotic Sarah, if he is even a remotely competent attorney, he would not betray too much about either his feelings toward his client.
A good, or even just competent lawyer doesn’t have to like or even respect their clients, he/she merely has to represent them effectively. I was involved in a protracted lawsuit with a former employer and after it was over (I lost on a technical bit of legal minutiae), the opposing counsel indirectly let slip that he believed my case over that of his client’s. It didn’t stop him from helping his client prevail in our suit, but at least I knew that he saw through his client’s b.s. and knew that I was right. A pyrrhic victory indeed.
Psychotic Sarah has a history of throwing the members of her own team under the bus and driving over them repeatedly. In that I am continually amazed at Palin’s capacity for doing that which is exceedingly stupid, it would not surprise me if, at some point the Wan Flea did not genuflect energetically enough to please Psychotic Sarah, she might shove him under the bus as well. Maybe then we’d get a glimpse as to how he really feels about his client.
If we learned anything from the lunch, it is that the Wan Flea is not a total moron even if his most famous client is.
what a gorgeous picture akm. it is quite chilly here in Manhattan today but bright with a pale blue sky and a few puffy clouds here and there for decoration.
Reminds me of that one winter day a group of us thought it would be a good idea to hike the trail just past the West Quoddy lighthouse near Lubec, ME.
Ice fog is kindy creepy in a s’error palin way… beautiful until you have to bring out the ladder and chainsaw to clean up the mess. Hope your conifers handle it better than the hardwoods I have on my slice of land.
Ice fog is just great. We get it sometimes down here in Indiana, when a foggy mist covers the trees about 4 feet above the ground. Makes for wonderful photographs as the tops of the trees and bushes are sparkling white ice and the lower parts are dark brown from the wet of the not cold enough fog. We also get rolling ice fog in our little valley, it is much colder 9sometimes by 10 degrees or more) there than just 50 feet up the hill. I have short movies of the stuff just billowing along like huge white waves. We never had weather that cool in California (or Texas, or Virginia or Utah or Kentucky).
I was just reading at Think Progress how $P will be making $200,000 for making a speech in Canada. They re-ran the comments she made about Canadian healthcare when she was recently punked by the comedian from Canada. I have decided that $P is a linguistic terrorist, due to how she tortues the English language. Unbelieveable how this lunatic tries to put a sentence together. She makes GWB look like Henry Higgins.
Yes, Alaska reminds me so much of the maritime provinces in winter. Except for those incredible mountains and sunsets. But, we just had a storm and because the dry snow turned to melting snow then ice pellets, the trees and everything do get a layer of ice on them, with the sun beaming on the crystal ice is beautiful. Just like Clark Griswald’s quote (“Oh, the silent majesty of a winter’s morn”).
What speech is she giving in Canada? I haven’t heard this one. What’s the deal?
Sauerkraut; so, what it a good idea to hike that trail up near the West Quoddy lighthouse? I expect it was pretty icy. Yikes.
AKM-
We don’t get that kind of fog here in SE AK but we do get hoar frost…
Which I have tried to photograph for years and failed at…
Eagerly awaiting your pics!
Per the conversation here this AM-
Gasman is correct. Having a parent who was a prosecutor, Public Defender, and Asst Attorney General during their career I heard many similar tales to Gasman’s .
That being said I think SP’s attorney IS a snake .
The phony threats against bloggers which issued from his office a few months ago… ?
Nasty tyke behavior.
The technically not -lying thingy?
Damages respect for law , buster.
Also- I don’t think Diva got punked.
Diva is a hardy intelligent soul- well able to take care of herself and wary enough to step clear of any land mines.
Who cares if the attorney thinks he got info and they didn’t?
Diva has been upfront- from Day 1 – about what she is doing .
So, what is different saying it face to face with the mouthpiece?
A good op ed about Obama’s Peace Prize speech
http://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/the-monitors-view/2009/1210/p08s01-comv.html
@Alaski Pi, I agree with you. I think CD and Gryphen are well able to take care of themselves and didn’t give anything away that wasn’t already out in the open.
AKM, I think that photo is very eery. I wouldn’t want to be on my own heading into that. I have never seen a hoar frost, so looking forward to those pics when you take them. Obviously we do get frost here, but people would be more likely to say, “that is a hoar of a frost.” Hoar has a slightly different connotation over here.
Maybe the ice fog keeps her hair stiff?
I visited the bumpits web site. I think this link http://www.bighappiehair.com/instructions.html
is the best. Love the “big happier hair” subtitle and especially the asterisks on the instruction page: “Not recommended for children under 12″ and “Bumpits are not edible”
Here’s the link to the story at Think Progress: http://thinkprogress.org/2009/12/11/palin-canada-hospital/
I didn’t read Diva’s take on the lunch, but I when reading Gryphen’s take, he seemed to be under the impression that he opened VanF eyes or really gave him something to think about. I think VF was giving that impression, but I don’t think this lunch “showed him the light”, so to speak.
That’s what I meant when I said, I felt he was punked.
Fact is, it doesn’t matter what VF thinks of Palin. She pays him, and he does what needs to be done to represent his client. I just think VF will crack down even harder to hide the truth and protect his client. They need to remember that he was looking to gain information from them as much as they wanted to gain information from VF. They need to be very careful about everything they say.
Good morning and TGIF to all- the sun is out, the temperature is above freezing, and it’s snowing in the mountains…doesn’t get much better than this in the Colorado winter time
Wonderful picture, as usual, AKM…I have a bad case of camera envy.
Just read Matt Taibbi’s latest piece on the economy. It’s masterful IMHO.
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/31234647/obamas_big_sellout/print
He lays out what I think can become Obama’s Achilles heel. Obama put the foxes in charge of the Wall Street hen house since being elected. I’ve been scratching my head about this since last fall. Well, maybe he chose the “team” he did because, being insiders, they would have the most knowledge of how to get back to some sort of economic equilibrium.
Congress has also been at work but most of what has been done so far has been completely watered down and will not provide regulation for the most abusive parts of the financial system.
I sure hope that Obama is playing chess and will start to move some better people forward to get real reform started. One thing Matt does a good job of pointing out is how folks like Volker, Romer, Gollesbee and Berstein have been keep in the background. I’m hoping that these folks or some others figure out how to close down the Wall Street casino and replace it with an investment engine that restore our economy.
Real investment in our economy was tossed out the window with deregulation and that is why we have the mess we have today with high unemployment, a failed real estate market and a very weaken middle class.
Well, off to do something to cheer myself up. Whenever I think about this stuff I get to upset.
Gasman, I’m a neighbor to the south of you. Nice to see another New Mexican here. The weather has been very strange this year – several snow storms and school closings. We aren’t used to that lol.
Gorgeous picture, AKM, thanks!
We ended up with 13.5 inches of snow yesterday, much more than the predicted 1 – 3 inches.
Husband made it in ok from Philadelphia with just an hour delay, amazing. I know flights were canceled left and right.
I fear some of our friends to the south of me are still getting plummeted with snow today. I can see the lake effect snow bands out my windows.
WTH !!!
Palin To Speak At Fundraiser For Canadian Hospital
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/11/palin-to-speak-at-fundrai_n_388758.html
“Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has made no secret of her opinion on Canadian public health care. But she’s scheduled to speak at a fundraiser for a hospital and cancer center in Canada.
ThinkProgress points out that St. Peter’s Hospital is public, performs abortions, and offers end-of-life decision support.
Organizers hope to sell 1,000 tickets at $200 a plate, but raise more via photos with Palin.”
why the heck would they ask her ?????
Cool… Got that a lot in the mountains of Colorado when I lived there…Sure is pretty but can cause amazing amounts of damage if too bad…
ANYWAY, here’s a curios headline out of Alaska TODAY:

Here is the link to the article re Palins speech in Hamilton Ontario Canada slated for April 15th.It’s bad enough that you have to put up with her, now she wants to inflict her lying self on us too. It took me just a nano second to write a scathing letter of disapproval to Hamilton Health Services pointing out the “untruthyness” of the fraud known as the Quitta from Wasilla
nswfmCA @ #18
I just bellowed when I saw your post!
1066CE = Battle of Hastings, the beginning of the Norman Conquest!
There is the history of the Nottingham pub! When invaded, drik up, tomorrow may not come! The p/mint story was fun, and I am sure, a great memory!
Oh, I am quite an old one, obviously, because 1066 and Norman Conquest fell right in line, but I don’t remember anything of that life involving hoar frost!
AHEM! Thanks for the good eyes and the laugh!
… here is another typo…”drink up”, that is!
It is a beautiful picture. I’m sitting here and outside it’s -40F! We’ve got the ice fog and hoar frost going on here to. Once the sun pokes thru, it will look like millions of diamonds covering the trees.
It’s so cold that jeans can hurt your legs. As we were backing out of the driveway this morning, the power steering hose exploded and all the fluid spilled on the driveway. I’ve got a nice dark pink frozen puddle now.
About this babygate thing, don’t get me wrong, I really do think Sarah is one “nasty ho”. She does and says so many weird things that it’s quite easy to believe ALL the nasty stuff about her. However I keep coming back to the letter that Anne Kilkenny wrote last year. Do you think Anne is wrong when she says that Sarah gave birth to Trig?
About Sarah Palin: A Letter From Anne Kilkenny 3 Sep 08
“It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months. She is “pro-life”. She recently gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.”
There are some upset Canadians on Huffpo that Sarah is coming to Canada to speak at a hospital especially after her recent remarks about Canana needs to revamp their healthcare. For any Canadian’s among us, here is the contact information to let them know how you feel.
Dr. Bill Evans the President of Juravinski Cancer Center
his email address is hhsc.carelations@hhsc.ca.
I have sent a similar email to Madina Wasuge the Executive Director of Hamilton Health Sciences and expressed the same concern, her email address is hcci.ca@hcci.ca .
Please send emails to them and express your opinion as to why having someone like Palin speak is an insult to our Health care system and to all Canadians. Please be civil in your email as being ignorant and rude would only serve the argument that her opinion has weight.
They want to sell 1,000 tickets at $200 a pop….and they are paying her 200K to speak? How exactly is that a fundraiser? They won’t even break even once that figure in the cost of the dinners, advertising, promotion, ect.
What are they thinking?
If I were a Canadian, I would ask where they are getting the rest of the money to cover the food, pay the servers, and other expenses if they are paying Palin 200K—the amount they expect to take in?
I live above the “ice fog line” and it has been beautifully sunny all week.
If I were more computer-savvy I would post a photo of the sea of clouds where Anchorage used to be, extending all the way to Denali, Foraker, and Redoubt.
thanks Trish for the email addresses. I’m going to send my sense of dissapointment emails from work tho. I work for the health care system
Another gorgeous photo. I think I would rather enjoy the eerie quiet of walking along that road.
Waving at TerryNY, leenie17 and all fellow WNYers. Hope everyone’s safe and warm. Our southern neighbors are continuing to get walloped but it looks like north of ski country everything’s much calmer, although really cold.
Going to take a bit of a Palin break today, at least through the afternoon. I’m still up in arms about her comments of yesterday insinuating that POTUS is thinking just like she does on the war and that he could take some tips from Bush. That one nearly did me in.
Fanfrom CA: Dailkos has a rebuttal to Taibbi:

(x-posted on Bree)
This thought cheered me as I was puttering about with garland this morning: if $P had even the foggiest notion of running for anything nationally, she or her minions would have made a concerted effort to get emails and contact info from all the faithful lined up for hours at the book signings. Not in an obviously political ScarahPAC mode, just call it Team Sarah or the SP Fan Club and keep that powder dry for ’12. Yes, the photo-purchase elicited some percentage of info, but not comprehensive. Who better to call on for all the hard work of grassroots door-to-door, if ’12 were even being considered, than the legions of proven wind-snow-rain-dark-of-night PalinBots? Yet there was nothing asked of those people, who would do anything for her, other than $29.95 plus tax. She does not have a clean list of contacts via Facebook – I bet more than half of those “friends” are just there for the trainwreck. The fact that she & her controllers blew off this organizing opportunity gives me hope that she is returning to AK and will never be heard from again. We can dream….
Great foto AKM!! I look forward to the close-up frost pictures. . . I’ve tried to get those and just don’t have the right lens.
What is up with $P being invited to speak at St. Peter’s Hospital? I mean, what are THEY thinking inviting someone who spreads so many lies about the Canadian health care system to speak? I know Canadians are known for being super nice, but come on!
And then, what are HER people thinking getting this speaking gig for her? Does this look good for her ultraconservativeness – going to such a LIBERAL, SOCIAL hospital? Do Newt and Rush and Dick approve?
@55 – perhaps they offered to pay her $200K in Canadian currency? LOL Saves them about $12K.
Please, don’t send her back to us! LOL Let her sink her own ship out there in the lala land of book tours and speaking engagements. As to the photo, AKM, love ice fog!! The Kenai was covered this morning, but is waking up to clear blue skies for the first time in 3 days, and everything still, still still. Is there anything as beautiful as an ugly black spruce coated in white shimmery frosting? They are such disreputable trees normally, but this morning, so festive and Christmasy, not at all their usual selves. And the best part is, the beauty is fleeting, the slightest twitch of air will dissolve it in front of our eyes, and the only way we ever get to see it, is to live here, in winter, while others think that we don’t show good judgment.
Get ready to send emails to Zazzle again . A new line of violence against POTUS shirts and bumper stickers
http://bit.ly/62k3vW
What an amazing picture. I can feel the eerie silence just by looking at it.
Speaking of eerie silence…..that’s how I felt when I read on TPM that S’Error will be fundraising for a Canadian hospital that is part of the nationalized healthcare system in Canada, performs abortions and offers end of life counselling.
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/12/11/palin-canada-hospital/
Can I just ask you all something? Is Sarah Palin really THIS stupid?
I disagree entirely on every single policy view she holds but I have to give her credit to having SOME kind of view. Erroneous though they are. But this? So basically, for a fee of $200,000, she is willing to ignore all of her “principles”? Or is she really THIS dense and clueless and her staff THIS inept, that they wouldn’t do some research into who Palin is fundraising for?
Fundraising! Not just a speaking engagement but FUND RAISING. Sarah Palin is raising funds for a hospital that she would consider part of a Socialist system, performs abortions and using her words, run “death panels”.
I fully expect Sarah Palin to back out of this event. Either that, or BS her way to being able to accept the money, speak at the event AND still retain her credibility with “the base”. She’ll TRY anyways.
The million dollar question is: Are Palin supporters really this stupid and gullible? It will be interesting to see if they will continue to support her if she does in fact go thru with this Fundraiser for a Socialist hospital that kills babies and grannies (to paraphrase their loathsome views).
From a former New Hampshirite—great fog photo!!!
On Palin photos on he FB page today—-how did she allow herself to shake hands with a black person? OMG!! How can she ever explain that to her bigot friends?????
We often talk about Rudi Guiliani being the “9/11″ guy; she clearly loves the use of the “military as heroes” line in every piece. We all support the military—but don’t use it as a prop in every post.
Fraud Sarah, once again.
aussiegal77, sadly, her fans ARE that stupid. I was just on HuffPo and the trolls are defending her. Say what?
If Palin is speaking at a fundraiser for a “socialized” hospital which provides abortions, then we can truthfully say that Palin is fundraising for abortions.
That’s what the headline should be: Palin Agrees To Fundraise For Abortion.
I guess socialize medicine, death panels and abortion are BAD….unless they are paying you 200K……then they are GOOD. Such a hypocrite.
Road looks familiar – hopefully Buf is warm in his dog bed.
The Snow Queen is in your neighborhood, that or Stephen King plotting another novel.
Ice fog was the very best thing about Fairbanks winters in the 7 years we lived there. Especially after the fog clears – blue skies with icicled trees can’t be matched for pure beauty.
Beautiful photo. We don’t get weather worthy of photographs here in South Jersey.
But I just wanted to say that I’m very excited to get word from Amazon.com that the Sarah Palin Going Rouge coloring and activity book I ordered for my very republican boss will be arriving before his last day before reitrement. I bought it for him as a gag to give him something to do while enjoying his retirement. I will, of course, give him a big box of crayons with the sharpener.
@48 twain12
ThinkProgress points out that St. Peter’s Hospital is public, performs abortions, and offers end-of-life decision support.
why the heck would they ask her ?????
—————————————————–
Thank about it, it’s a public hospital, offering end-of-life support and abortions, ALL of which Failin doesn’t believe in BUT she’s showing up because she’s being PAID. We all know she’ll do anything for money, so maybe this will be a nice wake up call for her devoted.
I’ve been banging my head on the desk since it was announced last night and I can’t figure the damn thing out. This is Hamilton, blue collar, heavy industry, union hotbed, all our MPs are NDP – ooh, scary socialists who might get invited to the dinner to welcome her. The locals sure as hell don’t want to see her, unless the throwing tomatoes are free at the door.

Back at ya! Hope everyone affected by the storms this week came through in one warm and safe piece.
Beautiful picture as always, AKM. I saw hoar frost when I spent Christmas in Yellowstone back in 2000. Hoar-frosted trees and the snow-covered bison gathering around the geysers somehow seemed particularly appropriate during the holidays. I found it highly amusing that, in the grassy areas where the heated underground water had melted the snow, each little ‘pile’ left by a bison had a perfect little mound of snow on top that looked just like a hat! Maybe it was the spirit of the season (or perhaps the lack of oxygen at that altitude), but it just made me giggle every time I saw it!
I have officially begun my boycott of any op-ed supposedly written by Sarah Palin. Like many of us, I did not click on the Washington Post link…unfortunately, many did:
http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/climate-change/sarah-palins-copenhagen-op-ed-one-of-best-read-wapo-opinion-pieces-of-the-year/
Haven’t seen this mentioned in this open thread – read it this afternoon on the NY Daily news site:
Sarah Palin is luke-warm on idea of debating Al Gore over climate change
A quote that got me laughing at the begginng of the story (typical SP)
“You know, it depends on what the venue would be, what the forum,” Palin told Ingraham. “Because Laura, as you know, if it would be some kind of conventional, traditional debate with his friends setting it up or being the commentators, I’ll get clobbered because, you know, they don’t want to listen to the facts.”

Check out the “Comments” at the bottom of the page too – here is the very first one (ROFLMAO):
Rocket scientist Palin debating Nobel Prize winning Gore. She couldn’t even win debating Katie Couric. I can see it now”’Moderator: “Mrs Palin, can you please give us an example of global warming”? Palin: “Um, well, ya know, global warming occurs whenever First Dude pees in the snow”.

“Going Rouge, An American Nightmare” – teaser on MSNBC right now (David Shuster) – hahaha, they will NOW, FINALLY promote the REAL story – and I hope it gets as much attention as the fake book tour/fake author of that other “book.”
So, AKM et.al. – when is YOUR book tour? Will you come to the NOT real America? I am sorta serious here – Shuster just said proceeds go to Planned Parenthood – perhaps Planned Parenthood could use this as a fundraiser and pay for your painted bus too.
A man such as this comes along once in a million years. We truly don’t know how fortunate we are to have him at the helm. I try to imagine Sarah Palin discussing morality and ethics in such a manner (or any manner).
Barack Obama to Andrew Sullivan on the campain trail two years ago:
Barack Obama: You know, reading Niebuhr, or Tillich or folks like that—those are the people that sustain me. What I believe in is overcoming – but not eliminating – doubt and questioning. I don’t believe in an easy path to salvation. For myself or for the world. I think that it’s hard work, being moral. It’s hard work being ethical. And I think that it requires a series of judgments and choices that we make every single day. And part of what I want to do as president is open up a conversation in which we are honestly considering our obligations – towards each other. And obligations towards the world.
Andrew Sullivan: But you don’t think we’re ever going to be saved on this earth do you?
Barack Obama: No. I think it’s a … we’re a constant work in progress. I think God put us here with the intention that we break a sweat trying to be a little better than we were yesterday.
Lori in Los Angeles @ 78
You know, now that S’Error is speaking at a SOCIALIZED, ABORTION-GIVING, Canadian hospital fundraiser, maybe she will do a Planned Parenthood fundraiser that could ultimately fund the REAL book tour – LOL!!
FOR USE BY ORGANIZATIONS
FACING LARGEST REDUCTIONS IN HIS DONATIONS
December 9, 2009
I understand that you have reached a point in your relations with your
supporters and the general public where it would be important to reveal
my identity as your largest anonymous donor.
The situation is this. For a number of years, your organization has
received very substantial charitable contributions from me. I am
willing to be publicly named now because my investments in alternative,
clean energy companies have placed me in a highly illiquid position as a
result of the general credit crisis in the American and world financial
systems.
Consequently, and much to my regret, I will not be able to make
donations of this size starting in 2010 and continuing indefinitely.
Several of the largest organizations I have funded in the last five
years have had to make plans to wind down major areas of their work.
These are programs I have been proud to support, including the Iraq
Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund that serves the needs of service
members and veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, the race and
poverty work of the ACLU Foundation, and the Military Families Outdoors
program of the Sierra Club Foundation. The future viability of these
programs will depend on the generosity of others.
I have consented to disclosure so that my charitable recipients will not
be constrained by donor confidentiality, may fully explain how these
programs were created and financed, and may ask others to step forward
to help sustain them in the future.
The three charities listed below will experience the greatest
reductions, compared to what I have given in the past. These are the
amounts that I provided to them in the period from 2005 to 2009, through
a combination of donor-advised funds, direct giving, and other
philanthropic vehicles.
1. Iraq Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund $247 million
at the California Community Foundation
Contact: Amy Fackelmann Gonzalez
http://www.calfund.org/learn/iadif.php
2. American Civil Liberties Union Foundation $ 94 million
Contact: Anthony Romero http://www.aclu.org/
3. Sierra Club Foundation $ 48
million
Contact: Peter Martin
http://www.sierraclub.org/foundation/
I request that you make known my support of all three organizations so
that everyone understands that the shift in my financial circumstances
is the cause of the reduction in giving, and not any disapproval or
dissatisfaction with the programs. To the contrary, I hope they will
thrive with the generous support of many other donors, large and small.

Lily thanks for the link, I agree with this diary. Sally, this is a discussion on the Rolling Stone article you mention.
The main point is that Obama cannot write the law. That is for Congress to do. If we want better legislation then we need to have a more progressive Congress and stop “blaming” Obama. It’s not in his job description.
Let’s all remember why we voted for Obama and if we still believe then we need to get out and work for Change in Congress in 2010. I’m getting fired up and ready to go. Rethugs and blue dog conservadems look out.
#54 Trisha
Thanks for the information! I tried to send e-mails to each address, but both were bounced back. Apparently, neither “exists.” I’m betting that the hospital has been bombarded with e-mails and has perhaps deleted them. Many of us Canadians look at this woman (and her pitched battle to elevate ideological satisfactions over the essential needs of ordinary American citizens) with a fair degree of justifiable horror: she embodies (and breeds) stupidity, myopia, religious zealotry, and superstition on a scale not seen since the Dark Ages. Sheer turpitude.
In answer to several above: yes, Sarah’s followers are so stupid that she could perform abortions at Planned Parenthood, and smother grannies with a pillow, and they would still worship her. They have the intellect of a broccoli sprout.
LiladyNY @ 78 – The President’s comments to Andrew S. reveals the right understanding of being a Christian. It IS about choices and judgement – every day, every moment. Does that mean Christians did anything to save themselves? By no means. Christians are saved because of the work of our Lord Jesus. However – being a Christian means making the difficult choices day by day, moment by moment to follow Jesus – because we trust Him by faith and love Him.
It’s not a jingle, it’s not a bumper sticker, it’s a personal daily choice to take up your cross and follow Him. Which is why the likes of Sarah Palin makes me sick to my stomach. She is a deplorable witness to the name of God – each and every choice she makes is to glorify herself and make herself wealthy financially. It’s a massive shame that she is a prominent “Christian”. Case in point – selling out for $200k by fundraising for an entity that operates in opposition to everything she claims to believe in. Palin is, and always will be, a fraud.
I can’t decide about the WaPo publication. On the one hand, anyone who reads it critically can access other coverage and decide for themselves who is more credible. On the other, I read a response from WaPo staff that seemed to be essentially saying that clicks count in these days of decreasing Old Guard newspaper sales.
AKM, blogs are important. Equally important are the critical thinking skills necessary to discriminate between fact and fallacy, pandering and politics, and a host of other candidates for belief.
I’ve read Mudflats regularly since the P nomination. I believe I have, from AKM’s posts, information for consideration I could not have — or didn’t —
after the nomination. I appreciate that.
Sometimes the comments are wonderfully illustrative of the point the author attempts; sometimes they are vitriolic. It’s the vitriol that most concerns me. Censure is called for opposing views. People go feral.
Posts, comments, and links here lead me to explore. Lead me to sites which both justify and defy my point of view at a particular time. But in truth, I most often seek those sites that confirm my point of view. Mudflats is the first I read of many sites. I’m working on that
Thank you for the work you do. It has enriched my critical thinking life.
trisha @ #66 – As always, I am surprised that I am even surprised anymore by the Palinbots. Surely, this is lunacy!
It’s just too bad because as much as their views of the world are vile, I feel sorry for them because they are being deceived royally. They are being robbed blind by Sarah – who is laughing all the way to the bank. But hey – if you’re too delusional to see what is right infront of you, then my pity for you only goes so far. Good luck to them – when the penny finally drops, it will be brutal.
Go Canadians! My fellow Commonwealth-ers and fellow national healthcare recipients! Yay for socialised medicine!! =p
Oh wait…..damn, I live in the US now! ARGH.
Americans – I love you but I want my Australian Medicare back!! =)
*HUGS* Mudpups, enjoy your Friday and the weekend!
P.S. I’m off to Sydney for a visit on Tues so I’ll be commenting from Australia for the rest of the year =) YAY!!!
P.P.S. When my friends ask me about Sarah Palin, I’m invoking the insanity plea on her behalf.

_______
I am a serial typo committer, so don’t worry! And I laugh each time I hear someone ordering a pint of beer (pronounced “mint” in my own mind of course!)
Since we are talking about weather phenomena, Monday we had a much-needed rainstorm that left snow on the mountains I see from my home, which was very nice. The following day was drop-dead gorgeous and clear, we had high waves from the storm. In the late afternoon, I was on the phone with a friend from NYC and said “I can’t believe how lucky I am to live here, the sun is setting beautifully over the ocean, huge waves are breaking at the shore and there is snow on the mountains, all of which I can see out from the window. I feel like a little kid, I am so happy!” to which he said, “Well, send pictures, because when I look outside my window, all I see are apartments and it’s black!” (It’s raining and gray here now, but I’m hoping for more snow…..)
Well, today has been one of those days. Just now read the morning Lexington Herald-Leader and on the Commentary page was an article by Clarence Page titled “Palin at the Gridiron Club: humor with impeccable timing.” And a quote: “Yet as much as her politics are not mine, after chatting with her and her husband, I came away with a new fondness and respect for both of them. If they were faking their enjoyment, they certainly sounded mighty sincere about it.” So, he is wondering who is now writing her material. The other speaker was Barney Frank, “Washington liberal master of pithy one-liners.” Page said she held her own. Accck!
@81, Xenon, That was posted on Huffpo, so it’s quite possible they overloaded the system. I would try another route, if you can. Either a letter to the Editor, other phone numbers for the hospital, or go above the hospital and complain to your representative. I would tell them that this women, who has called for the reform of Canada’s health system, who calls you all socialists, is against abortion and said the your gov’t run heathcare has death panels—should NOT be allowed to speak in a hospital.
LiladyNY @ 78 – Wow! Thanks for passing that along.
And THAT is why I’m so happy that Barack Obama is President and not John McCain. A thoughtful, educated, intelligent man who reflects, questions and discusses before he makes a decision is infinitely better than an impulsive, volatile crankypants whose choice of running mate puts his judgement in serious doubt.
I sleep so much better at night knowing PO is the one with the finger on the nuclear trigger AND the one negotiating with both our allies and enemies to insure that the trigger need never be pushed.
Hey is there a mudstock in Kennett Square on saturday? I might want to go …when and where?
Here is what she will say:
“Today I am helping a hospital raise money. I thought socialized medicine was the answer but it seems that the government cannot be put in charge of healthcare because they obviously can’t stay on a budget like Hockey Moms can. Oh and a shout-out to all the Canadian hawky moms here tonight, you know what i am talking about with your hospital so in need and needing me to help. But I could help more if you just go with some commonsense conservatism and let the free private markets take over your healthcare system. Then these events could be for instead, raising money for our military heros and their families like Track who we pray for daily”
The ice fog is not very thick altitude-wise. I am in the mountains between Anchorage and Eagle River, it has been perfectly clear for several days, blue skies, you can clearly see Foraker and Denali. No hoar frost up here, though, it is very rare.
You might drive up Arctic Valley Road or Skyline Drive.
I used to really enjoy how the hoar frost would build up several inches thick when I lived in the interior.
No Buf?
I knew something was wrong with palin from the start…I knew she was sick in the head to some degree (even some moral shortcomings)…but now I am sure – picking fights with Al Gore, speaking for hefty sum of $$$ at a socialized Canadian hospital, one that performs abortions…values schmalues…just show her the money! …maybe her own health insurance doesn’t cover mental therapies, so she should spend some of her windfall on treatment for herself…soon! What a hypocrite in the purest sense!!! somebody pull her gd plug!
This “fund raising” at that socialist Canadian may be a very important teaching moment for some of our friends and relatives who believe S’error Palin f*rts rainbows. Just let them know that the hospital performs abortions AND has Advanced Directives which EVERYBODY knows are death panels.
Ms. Palin’s finely tuned scruples seem to go out the window when she is being paid big $$$.
sorry – Canadian hospital
Back in the late ’60′s, I was scheduled to fly to Anchorage on the way to Asia. The crew would lay over in AK – but first we had to survive the weather in both WA and AK. This was around Thanksgiving if I remember correctly.
The first day, after sitting here for hours waiting for the fog to clear, the flight was cancelled and passengers put up for the night. Next day, we loaded and took off, only to return due to fog in AK. Finally, on the third day, we left McChord and successfully landed at Elmendorf – and the most gorgeous, wintry scene I’ve ever experienced.
The sky was clear, the sun was shining, the ice was sparkling on every branch and leave, and snow covered the ground. The air felt so clean, almost effervescent. No Christmas card comes closes to what I experienced that day. Truly magical!
I imagine that it is rather treacherous for driving, but it is breathtakingly beautiful. Awesome doesn’t come close to describing the ethereal beauty of it all. I’ve never seen this again, but I’ve never forgotten how it affected me. It is one of the scenes that I can draw on when I need a picture to center me – preferably when it is really, really hot outside

In Calif, had blast w/William Shatner, gig w/him airs tonite on Conan.Honored 2 have Wounded Warriors in studio audience=TRUE American heroes-
14 minutes ago from TwitterBerry
The TRUE American heroes are the ordinary men and women who wake up each morning and go to work, and pay their bills and take care of their families no matter how hard it is. Not to take anything away from the troops, but every single man, woman and child in this country MATTERS, not just a select segment of the population. And that holds true for everyone on this planet. We ALL bleed the same, we all love our children the same, we all hope for a better life the same. Idiot.
Beautiful picture as usual AKM
Just watched the SP and William Shatner episode on Conan (available online at Huffpo) – she definitely is in her element as an entertainer. But her ability to lie without any conscience needs to be recognized so that she loses all power to be consider any sort of ‘leader’ in the political world.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people like SP appear bright until you hear them. Got this in an e-mail and the first thought was SP and her followers and why!!!!
Just saw the clip from Conan…good god we’ll never be rid of her.
Nice picture…can’t wait to see tomorrow’s.
So many topics and too little time. I’ll make it short. $P speaking in Canada….hahahaha! and how will Faux News spin this one. I just told my bot brother and he didn’t believe me. I sent him lots of links.
$P on climate change……..hahahahaha! Bring on that debate and make her do it for free! What a doofus she is…
$P on Conan……It was kind of funny, but then she just walked off without ever having to say anything. I am a bit annoyed with Conan (who I love) over this. Once again, she makes an appearance with no questions or dialogue.
Done.
just saw the movie The Fourth Kind which had some footage from Nome Alaska……..strange story……pretty scenery.
She has no principles…just a greedy, money hungry liar.
Was not impressed by her Conan appearance. She simply does not possess the manner of speaking which makes that style of poetry enjoyable. It seemed rather disjointed.
There is hope! Check out today’s political cartoon in my hometown newspaper:
http://issuu.com/themountainpress/docs/12112009-mp_friday
I have to say i almost fell out of my chair when i first saw it! I double-checked the masthead (to make sure i was on the right paper) and was then forced to believe my eyes.
Thank you, God.
( for those of you who have trouble with issuu.com, the cartoon shows Going Rogue in the fiction section of a book store )
leenie17 thank you. i feel the same way about our president. he may not be perfect and perhaps can’t please all of us who campaigned and voted for him but thank all that is good and gracious in this world that Barach Obama was elected in nov. forget about mrs palin for a moment, john mccain all by himself was a disaster as a person and a public official. imo
get her on the tv with jon stewart. i would pay money for that.
