Open Thread – Frost

As promised, I got some pictures of the hoar frost that is the result of the ice fog we’ve had for the past few days.  Since this is the time of year I wake up in the dark, go to work in the dark, and leave work in the dark, these shots had to be taken quickly during a brief late afternoon errand.  I’ll try for more tomorrow.

Shivers up my spine thinking of the cold – what a brave soul you are AKM – to spend time outside to get these wonderful photos for us. Still in the low 20s here in KY, and I just saw a newsclip of the snow in Buffalo – stay warm and safe all you northern NYers!

Geoff Dunne has another post up. As a commenter said – “Will no one ever hold her accountable?”

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/geoffrey-dunn/deja-vu-all-over-again-pa_b_389706.html

It is amazing that Palin (or her ghostwriter) wants to keep dialogue (read as argument) going with Al Gore! She hasn’t the mental acuity, to say nothing of intellect on the subject, to carry on a conversation with him. I wish he’d manage to stomp her out of the discussion once and for all. She’s quite the Miss Priss to be putting HIM down for making money????

Lawrence O’Donnell and Ed Schultz gave her quite the set-downs yesterday, so she’s probably crying today about those mean guys in the lefty media.

So Palin’s Made-up American Life extends beyond her made-up political resume? I’m shocked. Just shocked, I tell ya’. lol

After listening to a few videos of Mary Glazier, Palin’s chosen spiritual guide, I cannot assume anything other than that Palin has been “reality challenged” for a very long time. And after 20+ yrs of Glazier’s influence, one can only speculate what lurks in the shadows of her muddled mind. The one thing of which I feel sure is that what remains secreted away there is more disturbing by a large measure than what occasionally seeps out. Her public persona reveals openly that she has no inhibition against fabricating her own reality. The one thing about her Facebook fairy tales that seems genuinely Palin is that they consistently present a distorted perception of what is real – a conjured version of reality that suits her immediate need to appear knowledgeable and relevant. Should we expect anything other than more of the same kind of fairy tales in a book intended to make her appear relevant? Not if we have been paying attention.

Re: Dunn’s article. Dunn cites a single source that uses the quote and attributes it to Linkletter *without citing the source*. A quick Google search of the quote turns up far more attributions to Wooden than to Linkletter. If Mr. Dunn wants to take shots at someone for not doing her homework perhaps he should do his own first. Maybe he’s right, but he doesn’t offer proof. When and where did the quote appear?

Hi LiladyNY, my struggling actor son (in NYC) has been complaining about the cold. He doesn’t mind the temp, he says it’s the wind that gets you. He had a bartending gig yesterday, got there early and after 15 minutes of waiting, he just went up and said you don’t have to pay me until 3, I just can’t take the windchill factor. Of course, he had on his tux and his winter coat, but sometimes that doesn’t cut it.

We used to live in Marblehead, MA, and the ocean would provide some hoar frost. It sure is beautiful. And again AKM, your pictures are fantastic. We also used to get (when it was -15 to -20 degrees below, a fog over the harbor and ocean that was ice. I remember the fishermen saying it was dangerous because of the ice particles. But I don’t know if that is true. It sure was pretty though.

    LiladyNYNo Gravatar says:

Newfoundland Dogs Rule – I remember that wind only too well. I worked in midtown Manhaattan – 6th Ave & 46th. My train stopped at 49th St & Broadway and I walked crosstown to my office. Anyone who knows the city knows that crosstown streets are about a mile long (I exaggerate but not by much). The wind that whipped down those streets from the East River was totally brutal. I don’t miss it one bit.

My daughter worked on lower Broadway which is well known for the “canyon effect” of the wind. I’ve seen windows blown out of buildings and have literally had to cling to the sides of the buildings when it’s windy.

    Good luck to your son.

Re: the Wooden quote – Someone over on HuffPo makes note that the quote does show up on pg 75 of Wooden’s book, “They Call Me Coach”. I’m thinking that it was a quote that perhaps he used for inspiration in his life so he included it in the book to underscore a situation he was going through but he didn’t include the source which led people to believe it was his.

Another thought is that Linkletter and Wooden grew up around the same time. Maybe this was a saying they both grew up with ?

Either way, I’m going to hold off using this one for now. Darn. It was a good one too !

The quote is not so incredibly earth-shattering in its sentiment that two people could not have said the same thing. Indeed, I agree with Buffalogal that it’s quite possibly a saying of their generation.

I’ll even believe that she remembered it herself. It’s exactly the sort of refrigerator magnet saying I’d expect to stick to her tiny, little brain. Maybe her own b-ball coach repeated it often during her HS playing career.

I find the anecdote suspect though. Palin discussing a book she read–even a book on sports with her husband? That’s like her referencing Lincoln during her “task from God” debacle. I think it’s simply more wishful thinking of how it happened rather than what actually happened.

Lovely photos, AKM. It always looks like a fairy land with the frost, especially if it’s sunny and everything is all sparkly.

We’ve had temps nearly as cold as yours. Well, earlier this week I think it was. Most mornings were only in the teens – very cold for Puget Sound. I’m glad it’s supposed to warm up. But that means it might snow. And we all know that means trouble as people around here can’t drive in the snow. (Too many hills and too many idiots.)

AP’s take on the stolen emails. They say it does negate the science.

Also thinking about he emails. Palin wanted to sue when her email account was hacked into, and then she turns around and uses someone elses hacked emails as the basis of her arguement. I guess she is the ONLY one who’s private emails should be respected. The right thing to do was to say, I cannot comment on email’s that were stolen. HA, HA…I just was dreamin’ a bit there.

Also, her emails, that were obtained legally, showed that she (her staff) had to ask McCain what Palin’s stand should be on abortion. I guess she really doesn’t have a firm stand if she had to ask someone else what HER stand should be.

So, by Palin’s rule…her emails are fair game to throw darts right back at her. Game on.

I’m a bit disappointed in Dunn- he expanded Palin’s “in a book we’d read about him” to deny that they read a book about Wooden *together*. It appears in Wooden’s book, ‘They Call Me Coach’, pb in 2003, which would be easily available in Alaska. The maxim appears as the introduction to Chapter 10, and is unsourced, as are other chapter lead quotes. Wooden would have been 93 then, so he may have had some editorial help. The Garner book, ‘Why Winners Win” written in 1995 attributed this quote to Linkletter. Perhaps Wooden quoted Linkletter; I can’t check the wording in Wooden’s book.
What Palin says she told Todd in the car is just fuzzy enough to be true- she doesn’t say “what Wooden said in his book, just “in a book about him” and she never claims they read it together.
The narrative point in Wooden’s book where this quote appears is just after he is benched as a coach in one place ["Apparently they did not want their present coach but did not want to pay off his contract."] and then he receives multiple offers to move elsewhere. He says his goal is to move up gradually into a coaching position at a major institution and quickly chooses a better job.
This would be a point Palin might identify with and bring up.

“It has come to my attention via an article by Joe Conason in Salon that Hadassah Lieberman – wife of Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) – is currently a compensated “Global Ambassador” for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. It is widely known, however, that not only has Senator Lieberman been an instrument of obstruction to the kind of health care reform advocated by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, but that Mrs. Lieberman is also a former lobbyist for APCO Associates, which represents the interests of the same major, private health insurance and pharmaceutical companies which Mr. Lieberman seeks to protect.

Mrs. Lieberman’s relationship with Susan G. Komen for the Cure is unethical and misleading. Important and often very personal donations made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to benefit the sick and dying are essentially undermining their intended use. And as Hadassah travels the globe under the banner of Susan G. It is quoted on page xvi of “How to Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life” by Mark Victor Hansen attributed to Linkletter

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Right Words for Any Occasion‎ – Page 92 attributed to Linkletter

It’s in “They Call me Coach” pg 75 as a quote in a chapter header. It’s not attributed to anyone.

Looks like Wooden quotes Linkletter and Palin doesn’t know the difference between a quote at the beginning of a chapter and the prose. The quote is attributed to Wooden in QuotationsBook.com

So she may have read it in Wooden’s book, but, like some online sources, doesn’t know how to fact check, or the difference between an opening quote (a device used in many nonfiction works, and something taught in high school English) and the author’s prose.

@64, That is one of the best Sarah Palin rants I have ever come across. Hilarious, but so much truth in his letter. Awesome. I’ve saved it to pass on.

@66 MO, Sexy Puritan, I like it.
I do believe Ms Palin is trying to be young and fresh and sexy. Only, she’s NOT. bwwwwhhahahaha

Thank you, thank you for finding and citing original sources for the quote Dunn ranted about! Folks, *that* is fact checking, and supporting a position. The Internet abounds with uncited quotation sites. BD does it like Bartlett’s does: right. Ironic that Mrs. P’s image is that of a sexy librarian — no librarian I know would put his or her name on a book like Going Rogue.

Nsfmca: Yeah, I’m still based in SB, which at this point with all the gloom and rain is looking a lot more like Portland, but I’m gettin’ around lookin’ for a job. Thinkin’ about gettin’ a ghost writer also too and goin’ on a sight seein’ tour to sign it in warehouse stores. Ah, the glamour, also, too! If I don’t fact check–certainly a practice not without precedent, I can have it written, published, and do my tour all before Christmas, you betcha.

    Worth reposting:

A woman in a hot air balloon realizes she is lost. She lowers her altitude and spots a man fishing from a boat below. She shouts to him, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

The man consults his portable GPS and replies, “You’re in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.

She rolls her eyes and says, “You must be a Democrat!”

“I am,” replies the man. “How did you know?”

“Well,” answers the balloonist, “everything you tell me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I’m still lost. Frankly, you’re not much help to me.”

The man smiles and responds, “You must be Sarah Palin.”

“I am, replies the balloonist. “How did you know?”

“Well,” says the man, “You don’t know where you are or where you’re going. You’ve risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and now you expect me to solve your problem. You’re in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but, somehow, now it’s my fault.”
By the way any one who actually believes that SP appearance was a surprise is out of their minds.it is just like the TF thing she did with Tina acting all surprised and all when everyone knew it was all set up in advance.

My friend very young friend the Ron Paul supporter,he does not talk to me about politics any more since I told him I did not like Ron Paul because he wanted to get rid of S.S. or at the very least privatise it. He thought that was a great idea because than he would have less taxes to pay..he is I think 22 or 23 lives at home and goes to college, used Obama car deal to buy a new vehicle, said why not. He’s right why not.Any way his deal today was the climate change deal in Copenhagen. He thinks it is the very wealthy trying to take over the world and using climate change to do it. He figures their are an unknown number of very rich,no names. men working together to take over. When he starts on these rants you can’t show him things like the polar bears on Ice floating or houses falling into the ocean cause it means nothing to him. Those kind of people with those kinds of thoughts are also truly scary.

ADN – SCATHING article about Palin – ’bout time!

“For many of us, she is much, much more: delusional; paranoid; vindictive; bitter; polarizing; petty; and, more than a trifle pathological……”

since everything is about vampires these days…well, maybe…according to books and serial tv, anyway, vampires can “glamorise” people…this seems to be what palin is capable of. I always thought she had some evil in her…can’t pinpoint it with a label.

Just to be picky, what is “ice fog” in Anchorage is “hoar frost” in Fairbanks or New England or Bethel. Real, eye-watering, lung cracking ice fog is -35 + (F or C), i.e., 40-below, frozen smog. So thick you can’t see the hood ornament. So searing you can’t breathe. So brownish greyish reddish yellowish you’d think you were in negative hell…..
