Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Palin to Hold Public Book Signing in Alaska?

“Heading 2 Eielson Air Force base,Anchorage, 4 book event;military’s call 2 keep this military personnel only,so we’ll do public event later.”

So Tweeteth the Ex-Governor today. So, it’s the military’s fault. Ahh.

And a public event?  In Alaska?  Well, this ought to be interesting.

Her two appearances in Alaska happening today are scheduled on military bases, and are not open to the public.  (Although, rumor has it we may be getting a report from “inside”…)

But a public appearance?! Dust off those old signs, Mudflatters!  Who knew they’d be useful again?  All eyes will refocus on Alaska to see how we react to our former governor who quit her job to go on a book tour, return to Alaska looking for love ON that very book tour.

The question is, where will this supposed future public event be?  Certainly not Juneau.  Anchorage?  Maybe she’ll continue the theme of smaller redder rural venues.  North Pole perhaps?  Kenai?  Or maybe even Wasilla.

Wherever it is, it will prove to be quite an event.  Of that I have NO doubt.

UPDATE:

Kim Chatman, the Anchorage resident who filed the ethics complaint about the existence of the Alaska Fund Trust went to Elmendorf Air Force Base today, and stood on line to meet Palin. Her 13-year old daughter wore an Obama t-shirt and was frightened by a man who yelled at her. Yes, Obama the Commander in Chief. Apparently she had a stare-down with Willow who was there, while Kim met Palin. Wow.  [h/t Celtic Diva]

I’m betting on no event whatsoever. Oh, Palin might do a public signing… but will anyone actually make a public fuss? Of course not. There will be blogging aplenty.

Say, noticed what’s going on in Arizona? How the sheriff of Mariposa County has built his own militia and is putting judges in jail? And how the citizens and the federal government have their thumbs… well, not usefully employed?

Yeah. Palin’s visit home will be just like that. Call me Miss Cleo.

She gets to keep isolated in her fandom bubble. What I like to remind people is that even serial killers get fan letters and groupies. Forrest Gump had a devout following and he spoke NOT A WORD on his cross country running phase. People simply projected his meaning and clung to it.

If Sarah kept her mouth shut, I think she’d have a greater following, nice to look at the shiny object. So, we’ve got to be grateful she exposes herself in tweets, facebook postings, and friendly radio and tv programs. No takesies-backsies when she finally is confronted to explain her debris ridden path.

If it was the 13 year-old’s decision to wear the shirt (which would be my guess for a teen), then good on her for being courageous enough to show what she thinks.

But what I first thought of was all the outrage that Palin’s children were off-limits, yet some yahoo picks on someone else’s child. He needs a lesson in manners, and he needs to act like a grown-up.

Regarding “the military’s call” to not open the base to the general public — there was a statement printed in the news article on Friday from the Elmendorf Public Affairs office, explaining that because the Palin tour gave such short notice to the Air Force about this last-minute decision to grandstand at the bases, “the military” would not have had time to make all the coordination and preparations for assuring security and general open-base procedures.
So, although it WAS the military’s call to follow security procedures (what if the Salahi’s had tried to crash the party ?!!), it was the Palin Camp’s call to ignore advance coordination protocol. … and she thinks she might be qualified to be the Commander in Chief someday? Gag me with a spoon.

  45. 45
    North_of_the_RangeNo Gravatar says:

It makes sense that if USAF was not given enough advance notice, that the event would have to be restricted to those who already have base access. That said, former military members generally do get base access, and with the high number of veterans in our state, and the large number of civilians employed on the bases, that would still allow for a lot of non-active duty folks to come in for this event. That probably explains the large Wasilla contingent.

As for a “public signing,” I remember a so-called public event here in Fbks in early September of ’08, when she first returned to AK after being named the VP candidate. Planners announced that members of the public who did not support her were supposed to just not show up. It wouldn’t fit the triumphal return script, after all. This was in the Newsminer around Sept 8 or 9, 2008.

“While the event is open, organizers are asking that people attend in support of Palin and McCain. If you don’t, we’re encouraging you not to come, [spokesman] Pierre said.” This generated lots of online comments as I recall.

Based on this track record, I think we know what kind of public event to expect for an AK book-signing.

Also, Diva mentioned all of the military security. I want to know who is paying for this? Are taxpayers being billed for the security of a private citizen?
