Open Thread – Twelve Days of Christmas

Last year I had fun rewriting the Twelve Days of Christmas with Palinized lyrics.  This year, the tradition continues.  You can once again imagine the Mudflats choir congregating in town square, everything covered with frost and the new Mark Begich LED lights twinkling in the trees giving everything a money-saving blueish glow.  There they are, with their red apple cheeks and cold noses, breath turning to steam waiting to begin.

They’ll be out here for twelve nights, delivering you a new verse each night and finishing up on Christmas Eve.  Feel free to sing along.

On the First Day of Christmas My Ex-Gov Gave to Me,

A Big Steaming Pile of …

teaparty

Tea.

Susan Boyle is a beautiful person with a God given talent unlike Sarah. Sarah’s talent is sniping at her enemies and throwing people she has used up under the bus. Oops, not a talent just her mean-spirited, vindictive personality trait.

It is too bad that in this country we have been trained to think of “character” and “personality” (and this includes public persona) as the same thing. People with wonderful personalities that engender trust and adoration can have terrible characters. They take others in, and that’s how they end up rich, or able to abuse others in some way. Kids need to be taught the difference.
This is how so many congresspeople are able to dupe others into thinking that they’re serving the nation when they’re serving themselves.
Jesus referred to such as “wolves in sheep’s clothing.” I see some interesting parallels there.

“obviously she does connect with some, but I found her voice to be whiney, rather snarky, and paranoid, with an inability to listen well to others. In the end, OMG, she’s no rogue, she is just like us! So, to her fans, call me all the names you want, I just don’t see what you see. These qualities make her neither hero nor a villain, they just make her common. ”

    Lieberman Flip-flops on Medicare

Need evidence that Joe Lieberman is trying to kill health-care reform? Just three months ago, Lieberman wrote in support of a Medicare buy-in for people over the age of 55—the same provision that he now says has led him to join a Republican filibuster of the health-care bill. In a September interview with the Connecticut Post, Lieberman suggested a Medicare buy-in as an alternative to the public option. The Post summarized, “By allowing citizens who are not eligible for Medicare or Medicaid to buy in for a rate below the private market, the government can extend coverage to more of those who are currently uninsured, he said.”

41 Fawnskin Mudpuppy, I’m happy to oblige!

The movements of the Sun and Moon have many celebrated days throughout the year, including two solstices and two equinoxes, with eight cross-quarters spaced approximately six or seven weeks apart (40 days) as well as thirteen full moons. We know some of these days as Ground Hog Day (Feb 2nd), the Vernal Equinox March 20th, May Day (May 1st), Summer Solstice June 21, Midsummer’s Day (Aug 2), All Saints Day (Nov 1st w/ Halloween) then Winter Solsctice, December 21st.

So the Twelve Days of Christmas fit a pattern of ancient human observances and holy days:

The Sun, from the Point of View of an observer on Earth, appears to stand still during the period nearing December 21st then appears to start its forward motion again about January 1st (New Year’s Day).

The fact that one religion has placed the birth and circumcision of their primary icon on that annual pattern (Dec 25-Jan6) speaks to me how deeply it is known in human consciousness. I think the story of the Fisher King is part of the Twelve Days lore, in which a person from the community is chosen, by the luck of finding beans in a cake, to have free rein, to be lauded and honored during the 12-day winter celebration, then at the end becomes the sacrificial lamb by which the community purges its sins by his death.

There are similar sacrifice myths for the Summer Solstice (Wicker Man) and Midsummer’s Day (Burning Man, i.e., Straw Man). The Holly King is born at Summer Solstice and is usurped at Winter Solstice by the birth of the Oak King, who then dies being choked off by holly in the summer, and so on.

I have more ideas and kings for the dates named, but maybe this is enough for now – thank you so much for asking!
    Happy Yuletide,
    Bretta
