    Morning, fellow Mudpups,

I have to admit I haven’t been following the maneuverings in Congress on health care reform. Why? I figured, as a Chicagoan, I have two Democratic Senators and a Democratic Congressman, and I live in Obama’s neighborhood to boot, so, as they say, what’s to worry? They will do whatever they can do.

Well, according to Keith Olberman and others whom I trust, it looks like we’re getting screwed. The “Teabaggers” made a lot of noise; maybe it’s time for the other side to be heard. If anyone is planning a little “coffee klatsch” in the Daley Plaza to remind our President and Congresspeople as to whom they answer to, please count me in.

I just left a web site on the immoral minority for you to go to. It is so good I want to share it here too. I believe that Sarah’s famed charisma is just a big act along with everything else she does so I went on line and found this site about learning charisma. I tried it and after one outing had success. Sarah has practiced for years in beauty shows and journalism (tv) work and her run for office so she is better at it. Go and see for yourself. One of the authors is a Pastor. Perhaps she even was learning in her evangelic church how to be charismatic and rule the world. PS Has anyone seen her go to church lately? How Christian of her.

AKM, I’m really enjoying the Twelve Days of Christmas a la Palin. :-)

Back to health care, reform, status quo, whatever is going on DC these days…can someone please explain to me how the mandate is going to work? My first thought is enforcement, how in the world do they expect to *make people buy insurance, garnish their wages? I know there is a fine if you don’t purchase a plan, but what if you don’t? Are they going to throw you in jail? Who would oversee this, the police?
I don’t know about your police force, but they can’t even get people to stop yapping on their cell phones while driving here and yes, it’s against the law in NY state to do so. And I don’t wholly blame the police, it’s an unenforcable law, IMO.
Anyone here from MA to explain how it’s working there?
The more I think about this issue, the more my head hurts…

Here in MA if you do not have a Medicare supplemental to buy into, you are fined by the state. For seniors, this proves very costly since Medicare only covers 80% of costs.

Is the system going to be worse? Not only can you not afford insurance (no public option) but now you will be penalized for not buying insurance? This is what I am reading here. This is criminal. Go back a few posts and read the Thom Hartman piece and the comments. Lot’s of good stuff on Health Care. The Senate has really torn things apart. It’s time for everyone to get busy sending stuff to Congress again.

I hope the Senate passes something so a bill can go to conference and the House members can restore the cost control measures like a Public Option and/or lower Medicare age requirements.

The bottom line is that we need to get better Senators elected in 2010 and add to the majority in the House. Then even if the first HCR bill has some things lacking it can be improved.

I’m getting tired of people blaming Obama for the shortcomings of Congress. It is not the function of the Administrative branch of government to write laws rather it is Congress’ job. I am amazed at how many people think that one man could change the whole mindset of DC. We really need to put Civic’s classes back in schools.

While I’m ranting I also do not want term limits. I live in CA and our term limits are one of the major reasons things are so messed up. We have “termed out” all our good legislators so a bunch of neophyte know-nothings are trying to write complex bills. Just a mess. We need to repeal our term limits.

However, there is something entirely unsettling about this clip and this Prayercast and the energy of those involved. Now that this movement is out from the shadows and is being vocal about their views and plans we need to pass this info along and make people aware.

They are setting aside their own values in their quest for power.

I was raised in an Evangelical home, my family is still Evangelical, my first husband’s father was a third generation Assemblies of God minister. Even her comment, “back-asswards” would be a HUGE no-no to every Fund. Christian I know.

On health care, I want a socialist system like France, but this country is not going to let that happen and we have to face that fact.

This bill is good start. Mandates will force congress to control costs in the future through a public option or something like it. Mandates make it affordable for everyone and you will never have any kind of universal health care without mandates,

The penalty for not being insured is only $75 the first two years, so while I don’t like being told to buy insurance from a private company in principal, it is the best start and the best wedge we have for the necessity of a cheaper competitor one day.

What if they still can’t afford to buy coverage for their family. They have a disabled child and they are both hard working people. To A Fan in CA @ 19, here in NY we have the opposite problem, legislators who take office and NEVER leave. People here plead for term limits. I don’t know which scenario would be worse but I do know that NYers, even though they yell and scream for change, keep electing the same representatives over and over and over. It makes no sense to me whatsoever.
Trisha @ 37, as I understand it, those who can’t afford insurance will be subsidized by the government to help purchase insurance.
I don’t have a problem with the mandate per se, it’s the mandate without the public option or Medicare buy-in that I have trouble with.
Also, I don’t think fines should be applied; first off, the amount isn’t enough to persuade anyone to buy in. Secondly, how can they enforce it?
Per PJ in MA, if you have your taxes done, then they *catch you at that time. Well, we do our own taxes, do we staple a photocopy of our insurance card to our state form? What about those states that don’t have state income taxes?
There are several people out in blog-land (DailyKos has a few) that think the mandate is unConstitutional.

40 Terry, We had some very good legislators who got elected over and over and would never leave. Now they are termed out. For example, Kuhl was a state Senator who was the lead on a state HCR plan. It has passed several times but was vetoed by the Governator. Kuhl is now back in private practice and will not be able to lead the charge if we get a Dem governor next year. I’d like to see her in Congress but those seats are held by good folk also so I don’t want them to go. Maybe she’ll move to some other district, but who knows.

I have to ask this question, “Would you have wanted Ted Kennedy termed out?”

I think not having term limits is good because they know how government functions and understand the nuances of law. A good person will not be lead around by the lobbyists. I’ve read that most legislation is actually written by the lobbyists not the elected officials!

In my professional career, I know how much I grew year after year. I became much better at my job after 8/10 years of experience. I think the same applies to elected officials. The first couple of years are really just training. With term limits in place there are no mentors in the legislative body to guide along the newbies. So who takes the place of a mentor? They are called lobbyists.

I think if a district has a deadbeat then it is up to the voters to get rid of them. Term limits will not fix voter apathy.

Here in CA both sides of the aisle are seriously thinking of getting rid of the term limit experiment. I has failed badly.

It will be done with taxes also, but it will be federal taxes.I dont know the amount off hand, but on your yearly taxes,if you have not taken out a policy, you will owe the “fine” as taxes to the Federal gov. Will you be thrown in jail for not getting a policy? No- But you can be if you do not pay your taxes for a long time, so it could happen. There will be subsidies for those who cannot afford a policy, but I have no idea how that works or how much. I mean, the price of a policy for a 21 year old with no problems who makes $24,000 at a low paying job,and the cost of a policy for a 50 year old with diabeties, asthma, and high blood pressure who maybe has had skin cancer surgery in the past,or other problems, and also makes $24,000 per year will be miles apart.

I don’t know if the insurance mandate is Unconstitutional, but I have insurance– and I am paying for all of those who don’t. Daughter2 works for a health insurance brokerage, and she says approximately $1,000.00 of our annual premiums go to reimburse hospitals for providing care to those uninsured. I think it averages 15% of each person’s policy.

I know several people who bragged about not paying for insurance- they did fine, paying cash for regular doctor visits…one had a heart attack, and racked up more than $250,000 in bills- and didn’t pay a dime.

I am not very happy about many things in this health care bill, but I do feel that everyone should be required to purchase either a basic policy, or a catastrophic policy. My biggest gripes- and these savings would more than pay for universal coverage: require all health insurance companies to use a common billing code/procedure, and transperancy in costs, so we can be educated consumers. Case in point: Daughter2 had surgery to fix vein problems in her head, and then spent 24 hours in Critical Care. Initial bill for hospital and surgery: more than $125,000.00. Negotiated cost to insurance company: $7,500.000. This does not make sense!

Renee inserts a post here and there trying to disguise herself as a reasonable something or other. I don’t care that she has a differing opinion, but I’m sure going to insert mine when I see her trying to fly in under the radar and be sneaky. BS is called when BS calling is due!

@57 Yes, that post was so odd. It says he is a CEO of some kind of marketing/media company, and he said he respects her leadership skills.
Say what? As a marketing executive, he should know better than most about creating a marketable image. I would think he could see through some of her PR mumbo jumbo in that book, but he swallowed it hook, line and sinker.

He respects the leadership skills of someone who blames others and walked out on her job? What leadership skills?

I told him that he should probably do a little further reading and fact checking before he so quickly buys what she is selling.

    @ Renee #27

A good read? By another person duped by Palin’s lies? The author is sincerely trying to find middle ground, but completely unaware that Palin is leading him by the nose and lying constantly. I’m an Alaskan, with an Aleut grandmother of 4′10″ who showed more more grit in single day of her life than one of Palin’s fake eyebrows. It’s Palin’s ilk – transplanted white supremacist Aryan types, who ruined the Matanuska Valley for native folk. You’ve been duped, too. Good luck with that.

i would dearly love for you to read AKMUCKRAKER’s essays from August 2008. you can do this by looking on the right hand side of this blog and checking the archives. this way you will have a foundation of fact to respond to. you will also begin to understand that Mudflats is an activist progressive blog and that the open thread is there for us to let off steam. when it is time for us to go to work we do. as for the rest who don’t like our comments about mrs. palin’s physical attributes. well, understand that what mrs palin sells is sex. sex pure and simple. so if i want to comment on the fact that i am not attracted to her sexual appeal and why, it should not offend you.

i would to see you read AK MUCKRAKER’S essays from August 2008 so next time you post you will have a least a solid foundation of FACTS concerning Mrs palin’s stewardship of Alaska during her time as governor.

as for the rest of you who find criti

I don’t know Mr. Dinan, the author of the HP posted piece on Sarah, but I do know Esalen (some connections there w/the institution where I got my Ph.D.), and the Institute for Noetic Sciences, where Mr. Dinan has worked.

There are marvelous things about both of these organizations, and there also can be a kind of willful naiveté that comes with people who have drunk deeply of the philosophies there, where you stand up and above and beyond the pettiness of the world in your quest for the light of enlightenment.

Reading his piece, I would be willing to be that he has drunk of this wine. From a psychological standpoint, it seems to me that he’s really wrestling with his discomfort about his dislike for someone because that’s not what creatures of light do, and has, as a result, done some extraordinary gyrations (including assuming that she drank some truth serum before putting fingertips to keyboard) trying to get to a place where he can not have spiky thoughts about her.

I hope that he does take the challenge posed by several of the posters there to actually read Going Rouge.

That would, of course, be “willing to bet” as opposed to “willing to be” – I am, therefore I be willing?

Mudpuppy Wannabe – I also, too wanted to be a Child of the Light and was maybe even doing a pretty good job of it. Til the Vampire showed her ugly black heart and I realized that the only way to combat evil is to accept that it does exist, no matter how disappointing, and to fight fire with fire. The Light will have to wait awhile I guess – at least until she’s firmly stamped down into her snake lair once more with no hope of food or water.

For those individuals with questions regarding the potential government subsidies for health insurance the Kaiser Foundation has a tool available which projects what they might be based on the current language in the House and Senate proposals for Health Care Reform. Here is a link for it…..
