Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Banned in Wasilla!? Palin Hides from Bloggers.

banned

Wow.  Take a few days off from politics and what happens?  You miss all the fun.

A couple fellow new media types, Gryphen from the Immoral Minority and videographer Dennis Zaki headed north to get some video of Sarah Palin’s “public” book signing at the Curtis Menard Memorial Sports Complex in Wasilla.  You will recall that her only scheduled book signings in Alaska were on military bases, and unlikely to tolerate any displays of dissent.

But, when she got all kinds of flack for not having an event open to the public, she decided to prove us all wrong and show how open, welcoming and eager she was to meet her fellow Alaskans in an open forum.  She had nothing to fear, after all.  And boy were we going to look like numbskulls for saying she was too chicken to have an open event in Alaska.

It was announced that there would be two events… one in Anchorage and one elsewhere.  Wasilla presumably. And so, we awaited the news of which Anchorage bookstore she was likely to visit.  Barnes & Noble perhaps?  Borders?  Or maybe as had been done in the Lower 48, a Sam’s Club or a Costco would be converted into a hallowed space for the faithful to line up to meet the woman behind the black curtain?  Whatever it was, I was planning to be there.  I was certainly not going to by another copy of Going Rouge, but if the line was short, I might give it a shot.  Would she sign the same book I already had signed by Andrew Halcro, Ann Kilkenny and John Bitney?  Hmm…

Then, the big announcement came.  The big open, accessible, welcoming, come-and-shake-my-hand event would be…. on Tuesday December 22nd in the middle of the day at the Sports Complex in Wasilla, guarded by police who would refer to it as a “private” event, paid for by Harper-Collins.  Why was this “public” event actually private?  Why was it held in Wasilla and no Anchorage event scheduled as promised?  Why was it held 3 days before Christmas in the middle of a work day?   (Jeopardy music)

So she could ban bloggers!  Yes, it’s true.

When our two friends showed up at the event, they were photographed, told that they were on the “banned” list, and escorted off the premises by uniformed Wasilla police officers!  The police were sure it was them because they had not only names, but photographs of the banned for easy identification.  Wow.  The “banned list” contained four names:  Dennis Zaki, Gryphen, Shannyn Moore and an unidentified blogger.  The fourth person has so far remained nameless.

Once again, Palin has failed to realize that her efforts to ban access, her paranoia, and her use of uniformed police to act as her defacto security force is in itself a much bigger story than anything that Zaki could have filmed, or Gryphen could have written.  Never let it be said that Sarah Palin couldn’t make a bad situation worse.

Oh, if only they had worn visors with the names of their respective media outlets blacked out with a Sharpie marker, they might have managed to remain “incognito.”

Well, the day Sarah Palin comes to somewhere in Anchorage for an actual public book signing where anyone can go, it’ll be a cold day somwhere with double hockey sticks….and I don’t mean Ben Boeke Ice Arena.

The far greater story in my mind is that the ADN won’t let people comment on this travesty – and the MSM won’t bother to raise an eyebrow.

It’s pretty crazy when national media outlets aren’t aghast at this sort of behavior out of a person running for president – and don’t kid yourself – she’s running. Yes, she’s “in it” (her life) for the money. But the only thing Sarah is more addicted to than money is adulation.

She has to run. She had to feed the insatiable hunger inside her for more and more and more and more people telling her how amazing, wonderful, powerful, humble, incredible, awesome, brilliant, perfect, smart, correct, beautiful, darling, gorgeous, etc. she is.

Now that she’s tasted it, the only thing that can fill the hunger is a presidential run.

    God save the Republic.

I also find it appalling that book publisher would engage in this type of censorship. I will not be buying any more books published by Harper-Collins.

For a person in politics… that Palin woman has some very thin skin…imagine what she’d be like as President where no one likes what you do on a daily basis. And draws editorial pictures of you almost daily, writes op-eds about you. You can run but you cannot hide. Heck, she would spend all of her time fighting criticism and not tending to the ship of state.

Ex-Governor Sarah Palin is her own worst enemy. Her obvious paranoia, her inability to recognize the truth, the constant blame shifting, her connection to whacko Christian End Times preachers, the documented lies about her family – all of these factors are coming together to end the political career of this woman, and not a minute too soon. The fact that so many Americans support her is only testimony to how incredibly stupid and gullible people can be. BTW, I emailed Harper Collins last night. That company’s reputation is being tarnished by the quitter. We need to let them know that such blatant abuses of the First Amendment and misuse of armed law enforcement office – by a book publisher of all people – cannot be tolerated.

Hot Dang! This incident is getting LOTS of print! Daily Beast and Gawker now have the story up!

I surely hope some folks in Alaska will check into the legality of all of this. Did the sports complex actually receive payment for rental?
If so, was it for just a portion of the facility, or the entire place?
If it was for just a portion of it, then how could Gryphen and Dennis be banned from the entire premises?
Were the Wasilla police on-duty for Wasilla or as off-duty as hirees?
If on-duty, who will be reimbursing the city for their time?
If only some media were banned (and they obviously were as both ADN and The Frontiersman covered it) then is this legal to pick and choose who to ban?
So many questions – so few answers.

I agree with the other posters who think the list was much longer. I cannot imagine Palin stopping at just four. She probably had a very long hit-list, including those she bashed in the book she didn’t write.

If we have to be inundated during this Christmas season with Palinalia, at least her latest antics are providing us with laughter and headshaking. Somehow, I don’t think it is going to be a cheery Palin household come the 25th.

I did find it interesting that a teenager who attended and was interviewed, confirmed that she is a classmate of Willow at a Palmer high school, so there is another proven fact.

    Comment from “Handsome” at Gawker:

On one hand, if the event was a paid or admissions only event or is a private club event a la the Elks Club or Realtors’ association annual meeting, the authorities grant a quasi private property/private event privilege or license to the hosting group. However, the organization must provide its own security a la AKAL.

It seems here that Mrs. Palin put out promotions claiming the event was open to the public and then after the fact tried to make it an admissions only or private club matter.

Furrthermore, since she is not a public official anymore and it was not a city sponsored event, I believe that the media can file a complaint or legal action against the Wasilla Police. They were using official authority to enforce private edicts of a non-city event. The only situations in which official law enforcement can be involved in an otherwise private matter is in a protest or contentious event like the 2000 Denver Columbus Day Parade, in which public safety and property may be at risk. Since this was not a protest or a controversial parade that would involve many people moving about city streets and possibly requiring a shutdown or traffic diversion, the Wasilla Police Department’s acts were purely partisan and not based on any assessed threat to safety or property.

Sarah Palin shows once again why she is not qualified for high office. Her high school mentality reduces issues to soundbites and personal attacks. That arena she was at is the source of Wasilla’s debt, including legal costs arising from misuse of eminent domain laws and the bonds issued to build an arena that does not carry its own weight.

Why anyone believes that this woman could be regarded as a stand in/backup for Hillary Clinton or is a contender of any class eludes anything bearing any resemblance to rhyme, reason and realit

Three questions that demand an answer,

Did HC pay to rent the space for a “private event”?

Who paid for her police security? I want to know who paid for her security for the entire tour too?

Was HC in on the banning of bloggers?

I do think HC need to start getting some flack. Remember when the book, “A Million Little Pieces” was proven to have some lies in it? The author and publisher were shamed into apologizing. Yet, Palin’s book has more lies (and errors) than that book. Yet, their toes haven’t been held to the fire yet. Wonder why?

When I first read about the “banning” I thought that it was Sarah who was frightened of people who criticized her in the media. She attempted to abridge the freedom of the press with her censorship.

Then, I read Gryphen’s followup that he and Zaki were actually removed for their own protection; the crowd might recognize them and things could get ugly.

Sarah has once again displayed her qualifications if she should decide to run for President in 2012. Dictators close down the opposition press and use police to act as their own private militia. If the crowd could endanger two bloggers (I doubt that anyone really would recognize them), then that speaks to the anger and hatred that Sarah inspires in her following. We still remember cries of “Kill him!” directed against Obama when Sarah gave speeches in the 2008 campaign.

Next week, MSNBC will award Sarah yet another honor, Biggest Lie of 2009, for scaring people with her talk of Death Panels. That wasn’t a big enough whopper for Sarah, and she really needed to top herself. Announcing that the book signing was open to the public when it wasn’t, using strong arm tactics to remove media, blackening out a visor to remain incognito are all worth rivals to Death Panels.

Someone ought to file some public records act requests to see if the facility was rented, if the rental was paid for (remember that Palin is accused of not paying a hair dresser in SLC), what the facility’s policies are with respect to media presence at events public or private (for instance, can renters ban certain members of the media [Zaki] while allowing others to attend), who is responsible for the cost of police coverage at events held for the benefit of private individuals, whether any threats (credible or otherwise) were received with respect to this event, etc.

What I think we’ve seen with this event is a hint of s’error palin’s plans for the future. No political candidate can maintain any level of credibility when they start violating the 1st Amendment with respect to members of the media. And no political candidate can sustain a campaign when it is clearly evident that they’ve not only compiled an “enemies list” but also acted upon the list.

Palin’s political future, as of yesterday, is dead in the water.

I discovered this website when Sarah was chosen to be McCain’s running mate at the end of August, 2008. Troopergate was not covered much in the mainstream media, so I came here to learn what it was all about.

The same people who would have had Trooper Wooten fired just showed us again that they are willing to use strong-arm tactics for some selfish purpose. When the legislature investigating the matter decided that Sarah had abused the power of her office, she said that she had been cleared. There is a healthy list of ways that Sarah abused the power of her office.

It may have given Sarah a few moments of satisfaction, but in the long run, that stupid stunt shows us that she is insecure and cannot stand up to criticism, and that she will use any mean-spirited tactic to get her way. She is still that nasty girl in high school, grabbing the basketball away from another player. I cannot find it in my heart to feel sorry for her, because Sarah finds a way to interject herself in national politics, and there are people who actually do take her seriously. For that reason, when Sarah tries to muzzle the media, she is dangerous.

Your comment reminded me of Palin’s “going away” picnic in Anchorage after her resignation.

    From AKM’s post on 7/26/09:

“The other odd presence at the picnic was a very “out there” second amendment crowd. Nothing says fun family picnic more than a bunch of people sporting firearms, and all wearing the same shirt covered with … firearms.”

    http://www.themudflats.net/2009/07/26/so-long-sarah-anchorage-bids-farewell-to-the-governor/

But bloggers are soooo much more dangerous than guns, doncha know?

“The List” of banned bloggers came directly from Sarah Palin. As usual she’s hiding behind someone else, HC in this case, to appear that her hands are clean on this public relations disaster for herself. The security force at the event should have been more concerned about folks toting guns than a few bloggers toting cameras and note pads.

The excuse that they were concerned about the bloggers’ safety is a smoke screen. Protecting EVERYONE at the function was the job of the considerable security present.

Although she loves to brag about her roguish and tough-talking credentials, she’s actually a paranoid little coward who is obsessive-compulsive about CONTROL.

Besides the obvious problem of a local police officer in uniform ejecting select people from a private event — for no articulate reason connected to a police officer’s official job duties — there seems to be another problem. Gryphen stated that twice the police officer put his hand on Gryphen’s shoulder and told him that he had to leave.

I’m not aware of the laws in Alaska, but generally a police officer may never touch a person except under very limited circumstances, none of which conceivably apply here, like, making an arrest, preventing a crime, crown control, etc.

Such an improper and illegal “touching” is commonly known as assault and battery.

I suggest that someone who is aware of the local laws should advise Gryphen.

On another note– the cops may have been moonlighting to make some extra cash for the holidays, a common practice (that makes the whole idea no less silly).

I thought I was reading it wrong, too, but then got to thinking…

    1) What ‘search’ parameters would Hastings (or anyone) have had to have Googled to come up with the names on “his” banned list? And his checking “on Google” results yielded just those particular names? I call moose droppings. Big ones.

    2) If the space was rented out by HC for the ‘public’ signing, Hastings had what ‘authority’ to place anyone on a “banned” list? Wouldn’t the fact that HC was paying for the space make them (HC) the ones to ban –or not– people from attending? I call more moose droppings. Bigger ones.

Methinks the ‘explanations’ and ‘deflections’ are NOT fitting the facts. Then again, that’s nothing new when it comes to most any (and every) thing SP does. beth.

Gryphen has up that the reason was to protect the four of you from her supporters.

Harper Collins disavows knowledge of the press ban list. So the decision was Sarah’s which means –
    (soap opera organ music)

    1) That Sarah knows she incites violence.
    2) Is using the police (who should know better) to protect the violent from the mere presence of the nonviolent.
    3) Is using the police (who should know better) to supress the press’ first Amendement rights.

And this time she’s NOT LYING.
Big cheers for Sarah speaking, through her actions, the truth.

My take on his saying “If I take three minutes on Google I can see that, given the nature of the people who were here…..” is that he is referring to the tenancy of Sarah’s fans, teabaggers, Alaskan secessionists, etc. to toting loaded guns and threats of violence (all easily searched on Google) that his concerns for the survival of his backside was because them, not from the acts of the press.

Excuse me C.Rock but Faux wasn’t banned from anywhere. They could still attend briefings at the White House but President was not going to appear on their so-called “news” programs or insist members of his administration appear on the Sunday shows. Their WH correspondent still attended daily briefings and R. Gibbs would answer his questions as he did everyone’s. POTUS and staff simply refused to pander to Faux since they tend to cut clips to alter the truth or ignore statements all-together if it doesn’t fit their message. Faux isn’t a news organization they have an agenda that does not include using facts or the truth.

    Perplexing, yet interesting, thoughts:.

    1) You had to BUY a book at the signing in order to get it signed. Rules of the game as per the Qwitcher herself.

    2) News reports on the ‘event’ state that a bookseller brought 1000 books to the arena, but only sold 1/3 of them. That’s around 333 books per my old-fashioned, traditional, non-calculator based math (give or take a few).

    3) So, how were there 1000 people getting books signed?

I’m going to defend C Rock here. I think a few people misunderstood what he/she was saying. I believe the point was that President Obama got a ton of flack for not doing interviews with Fox. He didn’t ban Fox from the White House and look all the flack he got.

Whereas, Sarah actually banned bloggers and only DOES interviews with Fox. So, she should be getting more flack from the national media about her actions of banning certain members of the new media.

trisha, I agree with your assessment.
The media went completely rabid over President Obama’s administration announcing that there would be no more interviews with Fox. Fox reporters were indeed still admitted to the daily WH press briefings. But other MSM organizations went ballistic about censorship.

No one will be able to track down this “Mr. Hastings”.

No one will be held accountable.

And to them it won’t matter. Because they think short term and in the short term, they barred Dennis and Gryphen from the event. And that’s all they wanted.

  154. 156

Sarah bans journalists/bloggers from her Wasilla signing.. what is she afraid of?

    Maybe this: ??

According to a friend of Celtic Diva’s friend (Kim) who was there….. there was someone there handing out magazines with a picture of Obama as Hitler…

According to: “I was there” 2:19 ( on the Frontiersman comments section ) QUOTE: “Sarah’s mother went around to be sure that all of the petitions that were there were things Sarah agrees with” ENDQUOTE

So. Sarah decided what was ‘acceptable’ and her Mother ‘enforced it’ ….. now we know why Sarah banned some journalist/bloggers……

Maybe she didn’t want it known that her book signings are a hotbed of Obama haters… while Sarah’s mom patrols for ‘protesters with signs against Sarah’ she misses people handing out pictures of President Obama as hitler…

@ mlaiuppa 155, Mr. Hastings is a real person employed by the city and is the department head responsible for, among other things, the operations of the sports complex. He is a good guy that works hard over there and does a good job. It is my understanding that he was given a list, not that he created one. Department heads work at the pleasure of the mayor. I do not know whether the decision to escort the banned out of the building was ultimately his and he decided to do so to avoid what he thought might turn into an ugly scene on his watch, or if he was directed to make sure that happened. Either way, the real issue is that a list was created, which means Sarah and her entourage were making sure there were no opportunities for embarrassing questions in front of the adoring fans.

I ran into a couple of those fans yesterday. They waited in line two hours and swore it was worth it because she was “so pretty” and “so nice.” They are pretty much the stereotypical fans – 50 to 60 years old, white, bigoted, southern-style Baptists, intellectually incurious, and not the least bit familiar with, or interested in, the facts about Sarah. As long as she’s pretty, and nice on the surface, who cares if she’s truth-challenged and bilking grandma out of her lunch money with the AFT for unsubstantiated legal fees associated with her unethical behavior, all the while she has more money than grandma ever dreamed of from the book deal and was able to build the big addition to the big house on the lake? Who cares that she’s nothing she claims to be and that her record of service to the people of Alaska is poor? She pretty, dag nab it, and that’s all that matters. ARRRRGH!
