The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Twelve Days of Christmas (Day 12)

Well, it’s Christmas Eve here in Alaska. The LED lights are twinkling in the trees in Town Square. A few bright stars peep through the thin layer of clouds, and all is hushed, waiting for Santa to make his final stop on the way back to the North Pole. It’s a white Christmas this year because, … it’s a white Christmas every year. Our carollers have been standing out in the snow for 12 days and nights now, waiting each night for their next verse. And tonight, visions of sugarplums are dancing in their heads. Could be breathless excitement for Christmas tomorrow… could be hallucinations brought on by hypothermia.

After tonight, you may now prepare your lyric sheets to have at the ready so you can sing the Palinized 12 Days of Christmas round your dinner tables, and Christmas trees, and fireplaces. The brave among you can form your own band of carollers and knock on doors in your community. I don’t recommend this unless you live in a very enlightened neighborhood.

The Mudflats choir is stomping their feet and breathing into their cupped mittened hands. Their little noses and cheeks are red and they’re waiting for their Christmas cocoa. So gather round everyone, and snuggle up to your neighbor. We’re all friends here.

A very Merry Christmas and/or Happy holidays to you AKM & all you other mudpuppies. I couldn’t have gotten through this year without you! I’m wishing you may have peace and joy in your lives and lots of love.

I know what will bring me peace and joy, but won’t say it here because, after all, it IS Christmas Eve. :)

Merry Christmas to AKM and the mudpuppies! This has been one very interesting year. I’m glad I shared the experience with the people on this blog.

P.S. I’m in my pajamas, but my basement is unfinished and uninhabitable. So. I guess I am a half-ass blogger….

P.S.S. At the Christmas Vigil Mass this evening I learned the background of the twelve days of Christmas, very interesting.

Merry Christmas everyone. I agree with Barbara – this blog IS the best. I come every day, often more than once.

It’s Christmas Day here in the Puget Sound. We spent a lovely Christmas Eve with our youngest and her husband – dinner, candlelight service and presents (we open them on Christmas Eve and Santa brings things on Christmas morning).

And in the morning our oldest and her fiance are coming for brunch and more presents – they spent the evening with his family. Then we will go to our nephew’s house for Christmas dinner. At least it’s not snowing like the last two years. Last year we all just stayed home – I’m too wimpy to live in Alaska.

And AKM, I loved the song – it was spot on.

Merry Christmas to all! The Mudflats has been such a boon and blessing to so many of us non-Alaskans. For me personally with my physical limitations, it has been my main point of communication and contact outside of my four walls. I’ve been educated and entertained. I’ve made so many new friends that I’ve laughed with, shared with, and cried with. I’ve enjoyed reading the posts of the wonderful Mudflatters who have strong convictions, yet are tolerant and respectful of others opinions. I’ve learned there are others with more critical situations than mine and that there ever so many generous folks willing and able to help those less fortunate. I’m thankful each and everyday for the Mudflats. Peace and blessings to all!

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. ~Dr. Seuss

Here’s a little Christmas present which I just read this over at BuzzFlash. I’m sure this will have $P chewing the woodwork!

HONOLULU – President Obama arrived in Hawaii on Thursday for a holiday vacation in the state where he was born and lived as a child.

The president, first lady and their daughters came to the island of Oahu for a more-than-weeklong vacation away from Washington. The Obamas have no public schedule and are expected to celebrate the holidays in private at a rented compound in Kailua.

A crowd of about 75 military servicemen and women and Hawaii politicians including Gov. Linda Lingle greeted Air Force One when it landed at Hickam Air Force Base. Obama took several minutes to greet military personnel and their families before getting in a black sport utility for the ride to his vacation home.

People carrying cameras, dogs and children lined the streets along the road as his motorcade made its way to Kailua from the air base.

Some flashed the shaka or “hang loose” sign at the first Hawaii-born president. Others held placards wishing the Obama family a Merry Christmas.

A group of Hawaiian sovereignty activists standing near Pinky’s restaurant in Kailua spelled out “End US Occupation of Hawaii.”

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann predicted the media attention the visit is receiving will boost the state’s tourism industry.

“I think it’s going to create all kinds of demand,” Hannemann told KHON from Hickam, where he was among those greeting the president. “People are going to want to come here when they see the president sunning and funning in Hawaii.”

at the risk of being my usual grinchy [read curmudgeonly] self…

the ’12 days’ of christmas are beginning on the 25 with what is here called ‘first christmas’, the 26 ‘second christmas’ and then reaches to ‘three kings day’ or the arrival of the Magi… no?

    Merry, Merry [in any case]!

You are correct, but the backward tradition of the Mudflats Palinized 12 days (which is now in its second year) starts 12 days before so that by the time the real 12 days begins, you have all the necessary lyrics to sing the song at will. Merry merry back. AKM

the page is new to me. the article is great and just makes so much sense. it’s just absurd that sarah tweets and that’s called news. by now i figure that probably half of her fb fans are not really sarah fans, they’re just people looking for news on palin. how sick is that? from the article: “If Palin will not stand before them and engage in a substantive dialogue, then let her tweet to her followers and enjoy her fame the same way other celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Lindsay Lohan do. Let her sign books at church picnics. Let her go on Dancing with the Stars. But don’t under any circumstances patronize her contempt for the practice of journalism.” I have to say i agree. much more at the link, it’s one of the best i’ve read about palin.
