Redoubt Grumbles

28 12 2009

Mr. Redoubt (I’ve given up trying to correct my tendency to type that instead of “Mt.” Redoubt) is grumbling. The volcano that threatened to wipe out the Drift River tank farm dumping crude oil into Cook Inlet has been on “code green” since late September.

But some earthquakes have been recently recorded, and now we’re up to code yellow.  It’s the geological equivalent of rolling over in his sleep.  Will he wake up, or fall back into a deep slumber?  We don’t know.

I’ve got a pretty good view of Mr. Redoubt on clear days and I’ve noticed an occasional steam cloud coming from the north side of the mountain.  The lava dome, which scientists say has been showing signs of greater stability now has a volume of about 91 million cubic yards.

Shhhhh…. (whispering and gently patting his flank) Go back to sleep Mr. Redoubt.  Do what you did before and sleep for a couple decades, OK?  Maybe by then we’ll have figured out what to do about all that oil.
