Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

This and That…

How Religious is Alaska?

Mississippi is the most religious state in the union, according to a new survey. Results were based on how often responders went to church, how often they prayed and how they rate the strength in their belief in God.  Alabama and Arkansas tied for the #2 spot.  The least religious?  Vermont and New Hampshire.

So, what about Alaska?  It ranks, with the rest of New England as one of the least religious states in the country.  Who knew?

Libertarians Needed?  Really?

You’d think you could throw a rock and hit a Libertarian just about anywhere in Alaska.  Not so, apparently.  I was doing some Christmas  shopping at the 5th Avenue Mall a couple weeks ago and someone approached me with a clipboard. “Are you a registered voter?”  “Yes, I am” I said.  I always say yes, because I am, and because I want to find out what’s going on in the clipboard crowd.  Turns out that the guy was trying to register Libertarians so that the party would have enough members to  remain on the ballot.   I was rather shocked, and wished him luck but declined to change my registration for the cause.  I just read this today:

The Alaska Libertarian Party is ballot-qualified, but it will lose its spot on the ballot in the spring of 2010 unless it increases its registration to 9,786 members. According to the Alaska Libertarian Party activist who has been conducting the party’s registration drive, the party will have that many registered voters by January 1, 2010.

Pathfinder Makes Port after Failing to Find Path

“Pathfinder,” the ice scouting tug that apparently attempted to “find a path” through Bligh Reef is now in port.  The crippled vessel whose ruptured tanks held 33,500 gallons of diesel fuel when it slammed aground on the infamous reef has now reached port in Valdez.  There is no word about how much of the fuel actually spilled into Prince William Sound, or whether the guy manning the vessel was actually on deck snoozing in a hammock when the tug hit the reef, marked with a 59 foot tower topped by a giant flashing beacon and a radar transponder.  An investigation is ongoing.

More Palin Drama

And we keep drinking from the firehose of Palin drama…  According to the court docket, it looks like Bristol Palin is filing for custody of young Tripp (Palin) Johnston and filed a motion for a “protective order.”  Here’s the link. Ugh.  It looks like at the beginning, they attempted to use “Jane Doe” and “John Doe”  to remain “incognito.”  Hmm.  A custody battle in the Mat-Su Valley between Jane Doe represented by Thomas Van Flein, and John Doe represented by Rex Butler.  Guess that didn’t work out too well.   So, they’ve now abandoned their “pseydonym’s”.  I wonder if the court can be fined for assault on the apostrophe?

Ecosystems on Ice

A study done on glaciers in the Juneau area revealed some interesting information on the role that glaciers play in the surrounding ecosystem.

The scientists found that glacial waters supply more carbon to marine micro-organisms. In some cases, the carbon being metabolized was thousands of years old. Larger organisms feed on the microbes, and on up the food chain.

As for religion and the people who constantly go to church (or temple or mass), some people need to go to church more often than the rest of us. That includes s’error palin. She ought to return to her Catholic faith and go to confession. At this point she’ll only have to do 20,000 Our Fathers and 15,000 Hail Mary’s. There SHOULD be a war on apostrophe’s. The country needs more tiara’s and crown’s, not more trophe’s!

Trophe’s, whether apos or aneg, have no place in our societys fabric – all they do is sit on a shelf or a mantle and gather dust. You cant sashay around with a trophe; you can, however, pageant-walk around with a tiara or a crown for all to see.

[Heck, you dont even have to physically wear the tiara or crown to feel it's impact and presence; once its been awarded, the effect's never end - it proclaim's forever the wearers never-fading, spectacularly stunning and stellar beauty, charm, intelligence, talent, expertise, personality, yada, yada, yada. One can operate solely on those long ago awarded laurel's, alone!, for a lifetime; I think SP is so operating.]

Beside’s which, tiara’s and crown’s are all shiny and sparkly – simple, delightful diversion’s and amusement’s for the easily distracted. beth.
