Whoa! I agree with Kathy the Scrappy! We had twenty-one inches of snow (Charlottesville, VA) the Friday before Christmas and that was ENOUGH to last me for some several years. At the moment it’s 12 degrees outside, and I’m bitching about THAT.

Sorry, I don’t think winter has any redeeming qualities. It’s dangerous, uncomfortable and expensive. Yuk!

Levi Johnston Doesn’t Like to Take It Slow

Finally, someone other than Bristol Palin is blaming Levi Johnston for pulling a quickie … and this time it’s cops in Alaska.

We’re told an Alaska State Trooper nailed Johnston for driving 63 in a 45 back in October — and fined the accidental Palin extended family member $155.

The good news: Levi has finally learned to use protection … he was wearing his seat belt when he was pulled over.

    Baby steps

    Beautiful picture AKM!

The Polar Express is leaving our area again. We had negative degrees before Christmas, right after that the temp went up and it rained. The river broke up, (one of the funniest books I ever read was “Break Up” by Dana Stabenow) and ran wild. The ice has caused an ice jam further down the river. Then the Polar Express came back for a few days . . .

River is almost frozen again. Last night wind chill factors were -21. But today? Going to be 20!!!

I remember one year when the kids were young we had -10 for a high two and a half weeks running. When the temps hit 20, the now NYC struggling actor, was out in short sleeves and saw nothing wrong with it!!

Oh, did I mention that one is ADHD?

We had low for Florida temps the last few days – evening temps dropped into the mid-to-high 30s (which is cold in Florida) & mid-day temps only reached 60. Ocean breezes meant wind chill factor. So folks have had their heat on, fireplaces roaring, arctic gear on, and so forth. Kind of weird. But the cold did affect the Miami/Wisconsin game – those poor Florida players couldn’t get warm enough to play football. Waahhh

OMG — After watching Palin and people’s reaction to Palin for over a year now, I find myself hoping she is the Rebiblican candidate in 2012. As cool as the left has become toward Pres Obama, the Dem’s tradition of apathy could be the biggest problem they have to overcome – and Palin is the perfect antidote for Progressive apathy. She can’t open her mouth w/out raising money for Dems and inspiring opposition voters, and that’s exactly what the Dems most need. I say, “Go, S’arah. We need you.”

You beat me to this. I hope everyone signs!
    From the email I received…

Several of these lies almost derailed health reform. Among other things, Palin and the tea partiers were responsible for spreading the following two lies:

    * Health care reform will include “death panels.” No health care reform plans ever included anything remotely resembling so-called “death panels.” Politifact.com called this Sarah Palin claim a “Pants-on-fire lie.”
    * Democrats are trying to cut Medicare. AARP calls this claim a scare tactic aimed at America’s seniors. Health reform would help save Medicare by cutting waste, fraud and abuse.

We can’t afford to have a political environment in which propaganda and extremism rule. If we want to have honest debate on the serious issues we as a country face, we must fight back against lies and misinformation.

Desert Mudpup and Lilybart…My fear about having Palin at the top of the Republican ticket is that in bad times Americans usually vote for change. Let’s not forget that Clinton was elected under the “it’s the economy stupid” banner (the continued recession destroyed Bush senior’s earlier high approval rating). If the economic meltdown had not occurred in 2008 McCain might have been elected (at least according to the polls). Palin did not help that ticket, as we all know, but if the economic picture had been rosy people would have been reluctant to vote for change and we might have had to watch Palin sworn in as the Vice President of the United States of America.

As far as I’m concerned, President Obama is doing the best job that anyone could possibly do given the horrible mess that has been handed to him. But most of the voices out there are not singing his praises. Instead, even his former fans are now critical of anything and everything he does.

Palin’s continued popularity is as mind boggling as it is frightening. If the economy is as slow to recover as predicted and/or if there is another attack made against America by terrorist organizations then many in the country will once again vote for change. And with Palin at the top of the Republican ticket it is conceivable that this fraud could be elected under the vote-for-change banner. And that is something that the world simply can not afford.

Amy #16- I attended a meeting here on health care reform. One of the things targeted to be cut are the Medicare Advantage plans run by private insurance that were pushed by the republicans. While traditional Medicare takes around 3% of every dollar for administration, the private Advantage plans do what all the other private insurance plans do and take somewhere around 20% out of every dollar paid in. After the administration costs, the rest is profit used to pay CEO’s and lobbyists.
I can understand that some seniors will be upset by the elimination of these private plans. But I believe that traditional Medicare will cover more things with no cost to the insured (like annual visits, certain screenings). More importantly, eliminating these plans that cost the taxpayer more will help Medicare survive in the long term.

I have heard the comments that Sarah could win the Iowa caucuses because the most seriously right wing Republicans are the ones who participate. But, could Sarah run for president in 2012? We know that Sarah does not think things through ahead of time, so I’ll have to do it for her.

The road to the White House involves standing on a stage with all of the other Republican candidates and participating in a debate. This time, I don’t think they will let her get away with that “I’m not answering your questions; I’ve got my own answers” routine. And, unlike her race for governor, I don’t think that they will allow note cards, either.

Another feature of the endless two year campaign (gad, we have to reform elections!) involves answering questions in town hall meetings and sitting for interviews. So far, Sarah has twisted everyone in the media around her finger and she only does soft-ball interviews. We have seen how George W. Bush controlled town hall meetings, and he only encountered friendly crowds with friendly questions.

Sarah needs Serious Big Money. I know that she attracts many donations; the question is whether the big business interests will see her as a viable choice that will be on their side.

The other thing necessary for to get into the White House is appealing to more people that just the very far right wing of the Republican Party. Sarah is polarizing, and has already split the GOP. I remember how she sided with the ultra-conservative candidate in NY23, forcing out the moderate Republican. A Democrat won in a district that had not seen a Democratic representative since the Civil War. Ronald Reagan won because of the broad base of independents who came over to his side, the Reagan Democrats. We saw in the last election that Sarah scared away moderate Republicans and Independents. That is the most important reason why she cannot win, no matter how pretty the clothes and makeup.

The final reason that Sarah cannot sustain a campaign is because Sarah cannot finish anything that she starts. She is a poor manager; she did not get along with McCain’s professional staff. She has a proven record of quitting when the going got tough, and her management style is a la Dictator, rather than someone who can lead.

I left out Sarah’s fatal flaw; it’s personal. She is still so angry that Obama won, that she sees him as orchestrating every failure in her life. She has a score to settle, and that kind of emotional get-even-at-all-costs thinking will insure that she makes decisions from the gut and not from the head. Sarah is reactive, not proactive. Any criticism of her will set off an emotional outburst- not a great quality for a head of state.

Daily Kos said it best when they said that Sarah is the gift that keeps on giving. Happy New Year, Everyone!

@laprofesora: Thanks, I’ve noticed how often “you would be naive….” is one of Sarah’s much used opening remarks. I find it confrontational, meaning, that if you having a differing point of view, then you are stupid, simple or foolish.

Another person who did this was Condolezza Rice. As a diplomat, she was anything but diplomatic when she began a sentence with, “What so-and-so must understand….” When she inserted names such as “What the Saudis must understand….” or “What the Japanese must understand…” I don’t think this went over too well with cultures that usually don’t respond well to a woman speaking to them in that way.

My husband used to make an opening remark, “I don’t care what you say” which also closed out opposing points of view. He really didn’t mean it; it was something that people in his family said as an opening phrase, rather than just jumping in and making their point.

Sarah is the one who has shown us just how naive she was when it came to being informed on world affairs and politics. I cringe when I hear her lecture “you must be naive to believe…” when more people have done the reading and the homework than she has. We’re not that naive.

And since this is a ‘ Convention ‘, Jon Stewart ALWAYS send his Reporters to THOSE. He even had that one come to S’arahs last Quitter Picnic last year.

    Mae Lewis @26 –

So true and really well said. There is no way this woman could sustain a presidential campaign. Even GWB, unqualified as he was, had more of the necessary traits like self-discipline and management skills required to survive such a grueling task. As someone who has always flown by the seat of her (flaming) pants, relying on a wink and a smile to suffice for hard work and substantive thoughts, there is no way that Sarah could ever suck it up enough to “get with the program” of a presidential campaign.

You are so right about her fatal flaw. Her biggest problem is not the word salad or myopic world view (both of which Bush was also afflicted with), but her inability to separate the personal from the bigger picture. She does not appear to be capable of even differentiating between the two. It has always been about her and always will be, because she is cannot function any other way. When she talks about being wired a certain way I think she realizes this, but believes it is a positive trait, because her reactive nature has always seemed to get her what she wanted in the past. This may have been the case when she was a big fish in a small pond, but she will not be able to adapt to real world situations which require stepping outside of the bubble.

That said, I am not in the camp of those who think it would be great fun to watch a Palin vs. Obama match. Elections (and world events) are ALWAYS unpredictable, no matter how obvious things may seem to some people. It was bad enough that she had the good fortune to be thrust on the national stage the way she was, and we are now dealing with the fallout. I think it would be foolish to take even the slightest risk of the unimaginable happening. Just because we dodged a bullet once, I wouldn’t take anything for granted.

    from ADN…..

“Palin planned to follow the Anchorage signing with a stop at Eielson Air Force Base outside Fairbanks later in the day. She had described the events on her Facebook page as the finale to her month-long book tour. But during a surprise appearance on the Eddie Burke radio show Friday, Palin vowed to hold another Alaska signing that everyone could visit.

“Yeah, military called that shot, decided that there on the Air Force bases they’re only going to have military personnel, or I guess if you’re a friend of military personnel, you’re invited on,” Palin said on the radio show.

“We will have a public book signing. Some guys are trying to organize that now as we speak, and I promise we’ll do that,” she said.”

Article over at Slate dot com – Why Bristol Palin Shouldn’t Get Sole Custody

    http://www.slate.com/id/2240259/

*** ….. the idea of severing ties to a dad who doesn’t want to be a deadbeat has become anathema to policymakers. States have uniformly replaced the “tender years” doctrine with the directive that judges should award custody based on the best interests of the child, a standard that is gender-neutral. Alaska was part of an initial wave of states to favor joint custody explicitly as long as it didn’t collide with a child’s best interests. In 1982, the legislature amended its custody law to read: “It is in the public interest to encourage parents to share the rights and responsibilities of child rearing. While actual physical custody may not be practical or appropriate in all cases, it is the intent of the legislature that both parents have the opportunity to guide and nurture their child and to meet the needs of the child on an equal footing beyond the considerations of support or actual custody.” ****
