HAPPY NEW YEAR! YOU’RE INVITED!

happynewyear

Never has it been so much fun to be a homebody on New Year’s Eve!  Sitting home and wondering how you can pass the time with fun people from around the globe without leaving the comfort of your desk chair?

Wonder no more.  Join the happy crew in the Mudflats chatroom!  If you were not aware of the Mudchat, it’s simple.  Two clicks.  First click the sidebar where it says Mudflats Forum.  Then once you’re there, look in the very upper right corner.  You’ll see some teeny little words.  Wear glasses if you’ve got ‘em.  You’ll see where it says

“Open 24/7 – The Mudflats Live Chat”

Click on it and there you are at a virtual New Years Eve party.   If you’re a registered forum user you can have your own name.  If you’re a guest or unregistered, you’ll get the name “MibbitUser” followed by a number.  Then enjoy the virtual party by typing in the empty field below the chat, and hitting “Enter.”

And don’t forget to look outside at the beautiful “Blue moon.”

May you all have a happy, healthy, prosperous 2010, and may we all gather here on this day next year smiling.

Use the comments to wish your fellow Mudflatters a Happy New Year!

    As John said it best:

    Imagine there’s no Heaven
    It’s easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today

    Imagine there’s no countries
    It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Happy New Year from the Puget Sound, Washington state. Hubby and I toasted in the New Year, then he headed for bed while I’m still wide awake. So I was taking some photos of our lovely Christmas tree since I’ll take it down tomorrow.

And I decided to watch Coraline. About ten minutes into the movie, I heard a helicopter overhead. Right after that, I saw a spotlight in my backyard, which is totally fenced. I stepped out on the back deck to check out the helicopter then realized that if someone was in my yard that wasn’t a good idea.

Helicopter kept circling and then four police cars (no lights)came down the street, turned the corner down to the dead end. Whoever they were looking for must have gone elsewhere because they left after about five minutes. Some neighbors across the street were outside, but I decided I was better off staying in the house. I think. I’d really like to check downstairs, but, well, maybe not.

I swear, my husband can sleep through anything. So annoying.

This is a rather creepy way to start the New Year.

I’d better fix a pot of tea. I doubt that I’m going to sleep any time soon.

LOL- Luckily for me there are no guns in the house. I wouldn’t know what to do with one anyway and would likely shoot myself in the foot. Things seem to be quiet, except for all the traffic from the New Year’s Eve partiers who are now making their way home. No more scary lights shining in my back yard at least. Whew.

Just checking in to wish all of you a happy and healthy new year! We had a wonderful snowfall on New Year’s Eve here in Boston so now everything is covered in a light blanket of white. This should make television viewing of the NHL’s (National Hockey League) annual Winter Classic outside game all the more scenic. This year’s game will be played at Boston’s historic Fenway Park and features the Boston Bruins vs. the Philadelphia Flyers. Tickets are more scarce (and costly at more than $ 1,000.00 a pop in some cases) than for the World Series despite the fact that more than 40,000 will be sitting out in the cold for about 3 hours. Nevertheless, there is a winter festival-like atmosphere downtown today. The game will be broadcast nationwide on NBC at 1:00 pm EST.

Happy New Year, everyone! Here in the south, we have blackeyed peas and collard greens for “luck” and mine are cooking right now. : ) The peas represent coins and the collards greenbacks. While my family usually cooked them with “fatback”, I’m a vegetarian, so season mine differently, with a little cayenne in the peas and a small amount of vinegar and sugar in the collards. Yummy!
P.S. Collards contain lots of Vit C and calcium and I eat them all year. Some things from your heritage you just don’t discard–just the bad stuff.

    – By the way, checked out the Chinese zodiac for this year. Here’s the forecast:

The Year of The Tiger begins on February 14th 2010. Drama, intensity, change and travel will be the keywords for 2010. Unfortunately, world conflicts and disasters tend to feature during Tiger years also, so it won’t be a dull 12 months for anyone. The Year of the Tiger will bring far reaching changes for everyone. New inventions and incredible technological advances have a good chance of occurring. For all of the Chinese horoscope signs, this year is one to be active – seizing opportunities and making the most of our personal and very individual talents. Everything happens quickly and dramatically in a Tiger year – blink and you could miss an important chance of a lifetime!

As a special way to start the new year, please take a few minutes to check out this website that a friend told me about. It’s set up by Xerox to send messages to members of the military serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and Asia. They will print out postcards with your messages and deliver them to our brave soldiers. The postcard artwork was done by children from all over the country and you can choose from many adorable designs. It’s all free and a great way to let the troops know we appreciate them!

Leenie17 – I’m pretty sure it’s good luck to start the new year drooling, ( as long as you have clean laundry ) Go for it!

Dang! I don’t have black eyed peas to ring in the new year. Is it wrong to cheat with refried beans ??

Like Granny68 says: some things about being Southern just stay in your blood and you don’t throw them out: just ate my collard greens, blackeyed peas with hogjowl (I was raised REAL southern), fried chicken, cajun/creole rice and cornbread. But I rounded my meal out with a slice of rasberry cheesecake from Juniors in Brooklyn. A thoughtful client ordered one for me for the holidays and she knows how much I love NYC. It went well with my New Year’s Day viewing of part 7 of my 8 part documentary on New York City! Doing tons of laundry today and this made it more fun. Happy New Years to all Mudpuppies. Thanks AKM for being here.

Another southern tradition for some (perhaps specifically cajun?) is to mix the peas and rice with spices, making hoppin’ john.

@#77 — ALL beans are lucky, not just blackeyed peas. In Italy and France, lentils are the bean of choice for New Year’s Day. Some other places, ceci (chickpeas). What they have in common is being round — coin shaped — which is why they’re supposed to bring prosperity. Coin or ring shaped pastries/breads (sometimes with saffron for a golden color, or with a ring or coin baked within) are common throughout Europe. So, the parameters for “lucky” new year food: round (coin-shaped) foods like lentils and peas, green foods like romaine and collards, golden foods like couscous and anything containing saffron (turmeric would work, too), foods that swell when they cook (beans, raisins and other dried fruit). Yummy, healthy 2010 to all.

@#27, I agree. We’ve ended a year, not a decade. I had to explain OVER and OVER in 1999 that the millennium was not ending (or beginning) on New Year’s Day 2000. We have (almost) a year to go for a new decade.

Health and peace to all. Considered joining Chat last night, but thought I’d be alone — should’ve known better!

Thanks for the bean info. I had lentil soup for lunch without even knowing – Hah! And the Anasazi beans are wonderful. I’ve been to Chaco Canyon and other places in New Mexico, so when I eat Anacazi beans I always close my eyes and pretend I am dining with the ancestors. These beans are supposed to be grown originally from beans found in an old pot at an Anacazi site. You New Mexico folks might have more on this story. If nothing else, it’s great advertising.

I am a product of a mother who came from Canton, Mississippi where I was born, but was taken to Saint Louis, Missouti, when I was an infant. I am the second born sibling and can bake a cake from scratch, shell peas, scale , gut and cook fish , cook a home made potato pie, make home made cornbread dressing, make homemade gravy, roast a beautiful turkey, cook a succulent ham, make a a home made banana pudding, make homemade cornbread, pick, wash and cook collard greens, and make homemade dressing.

I say all this because I am in all other ways a city girl who has had the internship of a country girl. So, my children and grandchildren feel like they are missing something if they dont have collard greens, macaroni and cheese, turkey, ham, (must have black-eyed peas, for luck) dressing, sweet potato pies, cheese cake, banana pudding and chitterlings on holidays.

But since I have my Mom’s recipe’s, ( Yum) I have learned (and with technology) I can give my city children and family, who doesnt live with me, country meals with less work Yes!

Spent yesterday under the weather, so I missed all the good advice for good luck. If I did my laundry today, could I maybe have 50% good luck?

well…on January 1, I threw in a load of laundry (mmmm….clean flannel sheets & pillowcases) and managed to get in some beans (huge vat of homemade chili at the food pantry along with loads of leftover food from the church’s new year’s eve party).
Stayed up late in the treehouse and met a bunch of sparkling new mudpuppies.
And I’m looking at the window now, watching huge fluffy snowflakes and dozens of cardinals feeding on the dried pokeberries.
2010 is off to a great start!!!

And in Japan, we eat kuromame, black beans cooked with chestnuts. Hubby made some this time. The other thing we Japanese do is eat noodles – so we ate soba (from Kumamoto, hubby’s family home area in Japan) (must slurp the noodle without biting for the good luck/long life), kuromame, kinpira gobo (burdock root, another long food item for long life) that I cooked. Of course, I don’t live in Japan, but in Florida’s panhandle, so getting Japanese foods like this is a challenge. We’re lucky to have a Korean and a Vietnamese grocery in town.

Happy New Year to all, may 2010 be a GOOD year!
