Open Thread – New Year’s Eve!

moon

Well, Happy Last Day of 2009 everyone!  It’s been an interesting year to say the least.

First things first.  Have you seen the moon?  If you haven’t, drop everything and go look!  In my neck of the woods, the “Blue Moon” is shining in a clear sky and reflecting off the icy cold water of Cook Inlet.  It was a breathtaking sight on the way to work this morning.  Something like this comes along… (yes I’m going to say it)… once in a blue moon!

Second things second.

There was a little “excitement” at Mudflats Central last night so I’m a little late with the Open Thread.  It was a night of worry, but I’m happy to report that all is well.

So, what I was supposed to tell you is that the folks over at the Forum have cooked up a New Year’s thread where you can go and post pics of your favorite “hooves on the ground” guy – Brian the Moose.  Brian, as the Mudflats mascot, has come to represent a certain spirit of wildness, bigness of heart, and sense of adventure and fun that I think of when I think of this community.    The “real” Brian is a bull moose that loves to hang out around my house. He’s all of them really, because Brian as a symbol will outlast any one particular animal.

One additional thing you may not know is that Brian makes conservative bloggers NUTS.  It’s true.  You can’t believe how many of them talk about our shaggy friend and how it’s impossible for anyone to have a sense of fun and and a brain at the same time.  Or so they believe.  And just between you and me, (whispers) it makes me love him all the more.

So, over the last year many of you have found your own “Brians,” whether they be paper print outs,  action figures, or stuffed ones.  Like minded groups have rallied around symbols since the beginning of like-minded groups.   So the Forum folks want your pictures of what YOUR Brian is up to this New Year’s Eve.

Here’s the link:

http://www.themudflats.net/forum/index.php/topic,9096.0.html

And all are invited to share on this thread what your New Year’s Resolutions are for 2010, in addition to the usual links and chat on the open thread.

Perhaps your New Year’s Resolution will be to join the Mudflats Forum, hop in and enjoy a new experience with a whole big family of Mudflatters you never knew existed!  Now that’s an adventure!

By the time that eclipse rolls around (on our radio they said 9:50 AST this morning…) the moon will be below the mountains here. It was beautiful hanging over the Gov’s Mansion at 7:55 this morning though as we were walking to work.

Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to all from the Newfoundland Pack in Western Massachusetts!

Snowing here, so need a miracle to see the moon. Now that I think about it, each time there’s something up in the heavens to see, we get overcast.

    That’s just weird.

So Long 2009 ! You sure were quite an adventure! ( Did $P really quit only a few months ago ?? Seems like freakin’ forever!)

Wishing EVERYONE a Very Happy New Year!

My resolution for 2010 is , as always, to become better organized. I just plain s*u*c*k at it. (and i’m a virgo, no less. how can that be??) I get a little better with each passing year but even if I live to be 102 I’ll never really get there. I think making the resolution every year is the only thing keeping me check !

Buffalo Brian is already gearing up to ring in 2010. Just need to figure out how to upload a photo to the forum thread.

So I guess today is the day $P will speak the truth about something ? Or does she defy even the “once in a blue moon” rule ?

And wow, that’s some camera ya got there AKM. *wink *

After every successful encounter (the ones where I don’t end up smashing something fragile), Brian gets a treat of apple and the boots get a spit polish.

Yesterday my five year old granddaughter accompanied me on my rounds of Meals on Wheels. She enjoys seeing the people and where they live, and they, of course, enjoy interacting with a child. On the way to one house I explained that the man was a veteran of two wars, WWII and Korea. She asked, “What’s a war?” This is a kid who learned to read at age 4, knows a lot about childbirth and pregnancy, and is learning Chinese as well as English in an immersion program. I think I was more flustered than I would have been at, “Where do babies come from?” I mumbled something about countries not getting along and shooting at each other and how it shouldn’t be but it.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone on our planet had to ask, “What’s a war?”

I am sure none of you wll need this, but just in case, here are some hangover cures ;-)

Sleep. Rest is your best friend at this point to give your body a recover. It is best to stay in bed so call in to work if you have to, tell them you have the stomach flu. You will sound so horrible on the phone they may believe you (unless they saw you at the bar, not a good idea then).

Replenish your body with fruit juice and water.

Avoid caffeine. A weak cup of coffee may be okay but a lot of caffeine will continue to dehydrate you, the opposite of what you want right now.

Drink orange juice for Vitamin C.

Drink a sports drink like Gatorade or Powerade.

Eat mineral rich food like pickles or canned fish.

In Poland, drinking pickle juice is a common remedy.

Drink a Bloody Mary. While the popular phrase “hair of the dog that bit you” may sound logical with a shot of whiskey left in the bottle next to your bed, it’s only temporary. Try a Bloody Mary instead, while your blood is dealing with the new alcohol it is ignoring the old and in the mean time tomato juice and celery are full of vitamins. If you drank the last of the vodka make a Virgin Mary. Another spicy morning after drink option is Hair of the Dog, in which gin and hot sauce are sure to bite your hangover back.

Take a shower, switching between cold and hot water.

And if your hangover is really bad, and all else fails..

In Ireland it was said that the cure for a hangover is to bury the ailing person up to the neck in moist river sand.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND A WONDERFUL, HEALTHY, WEALTHY 2010 TO ALL!

As a volunteer firefighter, myself and all my comrades can attest to this. After a night on the town, a few minutes with a respirator mask on and breathing oxygen and the hangover is almost immediately gone.

Now, obviously, not everyone has access to an oxygen tank on New Year’s Day, but if there is any way you can get access, try this – guaranteed to work.

And we all know, based on the past, how important and effective a community organizer can be in effecting ‘ change ‘.

A Special Thanks also goes out to AKM’s immediate Family for being so supportive and allowing her the time and support to put into this Blog ( and sharing Her with us ) so that we may all have a second Home here as well.

And speaking of ‘ sharing ‘…a beautiful voice in a song, sharing a special message that we might think about as we start a New Year….
    …. just ” Imagine .”

Looks like the blogger at C4P doesn’t understand English. Twice (not once, but twice) he misused “allegedly” (see quotes below). Is he trying to play like he’s a real journalist by using a reporter’s jargon, but having trouble figuring out the lingo? I hate to tell him but both of those sources DID, in fact, write those reports.

“Update: ABC is allegedly reporting that Rush is in ‘stable condition.’”

“Update #2: KITV has allegedly confirmed that Rush will not be released this evening.”

“One additional thing you may not know is that Brian makes conservative bloggers NUTS. It’s true. You can’t believe how many of them talk about our shaggy friend and how it’s impossible for anyone to have a sense of fun and and a brain at the same time. Or so they believe.’

I am continually amazed at the number of people who have no real sense of humor. I love to make small ironic comments about what ever situations may come my way. Just a second or two to smile and then move on. Probably 50% or more of the people I work with are offended or actually angry when I do that. Apparently, the concept of gaining a laugh or smile from something that is otherwise serious is beyond their ability to stand outside a situation and see some kind of sillyness, and stand inside it and be serious, at the same time.

Maybe that is just another difference in conservatives and liberals. Brian can be a real moose who brings joy when he is seen and can be a greater concept that we as group have bestowed on a Moose we will never physically see. Literalist – conservatives probably can’t do that. Again living in two mental realities and knowing the difference between the real and the created.

I feel your pain about the teenage snit, Irishgirl. Mine has been in a huge huff lately because I refuse to allow some “friend” he met on the internet stay at the house. Why should I allow some stranger no one has ever met stay here? So, the individual – an adult! – is staying at a motel and despite my instructions to not go to the motel, he went there. Using a vehicle which he is not allowed to use when the weather is bad. So guess how the weather is right now? Right. Freezing rain. I just hope he gets home in one piece. But it’s going to be on hell of a cold day in hades before he gets his driving privileges back.
