Hello everyone – I want to wish everyone a Happy 2010, and let you know I am keeping up with reading this blog that I just love – Thanks AKM for all your work! And thanks to all of you who take the time to write such thoughtful comments. I’m eager to make my way through that incredible book list!
Now a request -
I am thoroughly enmeshed in a family eldercare situation – we’re holding a type of intervention today for a visiting relative who lives 2000 miles away who can’t see his parent is in crisis. Wish us luck, prayers, communication skills, patience and anything else that will help us through.
Looks like Kansas! Three below this morning with a dusting of new snow. It’s supposed get worse before it gets better. Doesn’t bother me though…I’ve always been a cold weather person. I love to get all bundled up and take the dogs for a walk when the snow’s coming down and everything gets that quiet muffled sound.
Warm this morning 15 degrees. It’s snizzling here. Sun out and snow flakes falling. Quite beautiful. Of course, wind chill being what it is, I’m not going out until later.
Hope the meeting tomorrow goes well. Here in the Hilltowns of Western MA some of our hunters are our best conservationists.
Thought I had finished, but saw a link about a dog saving a child’s life from a cougar. Had to link. Sometimes as humans we can learn a great deal from “the Nation within the Nation.”
Bah, looks like the scene out my window here in western NY…all nice and pretty when I get to stay inside, snuggle up by the fire and read a good book but I have a dr appt this AM.
In exile @ 4, good luck today. I know those types of conversations aren’t pleasant. I hope it goes well.
Off later today to an Orange Bowl rally at Miami’s Bayfront area – Mr. Terps is a Hawkeye – and we going to have to bundle up in long sleeves and sweatshirts ’cause today’s projected high is only 62 degrees. Brrrrrrrr! Chilly!
We’re taking the Tri-Rail train down from Hollywood then using Miami Metro public transportation and sooooooo looking forward to not having to drive or attempt to find a parking place! Fun!
It references a LA Times article, “Time for a fresh look at a fateful year — 1989″
“The year 1989 changed the world. It moved us from a world of division and nuclear blackmail to one of new opportunity and unprecedented prosperity. It set the stage for our contemporary era: globalization, the triumph of free markets, the spread of democracy. It ushered in the great global economic boom that lifted billions out of poverty around the world and established America as the one and only superpower.
Yet it was a dangerous triumph, chiefly because we claimed it for our own and scarcely bothered to fully understand how this great change came to pass. We told ourselves stick-figure parables of defiance and good-versus-evil triumph, summed up in Ronald Reagan’s clarion call: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
From the vantage point of 20 years, we should be wiser. The reality is that “our” victory in the Cold War was not what we thought it was, nor did it happen the way we think it did. Most painfully, the myths we spun about it have hurt the world and ourselves.
What are these myths that we embrace as truths? ”
What, indeed? This is a set of conversation points guaranteed to make your winger uncle go apoplectic, so have fun!
(((4 exile))))) good luck and I hope as a family you can offer help to both in this time of need. I was distant from my Mom when she needed help and was grateful for assistance I got from other family at the time. The following years were tough and I even had to stop working for a while. It sounds like you are dealing with an only child so they will need family support to make necessary changes.
Haven’t read the 1989 aritcle yet but I do remember this was the time that “outsourcing” started. I was in the computer business and the rush to India and other Asian countries was full swing. “off shore” had become the mantra of the MBA crowd. Why pay American wages when the function (routine programming, accounting, customer service, etc) could be done by low wage folks “off shore”. Oh, I forgot electronic assembly. Used to be lots of that in the USA but it was all sent abroad with most of our other manufacturing assembly jobs.
Alaska Dispatch has a new story up about Sarah’s emails. It seems some anonymous source has provided them with some of the emails, with more to come tonight. There is also a pdf link on the site to the copies of the emails.
The first one in the pdf link is very revealing in my opinion. Sarah is telling everyone that her state account is viewable by everyone and their mother so they should use this new account she created (the yahoo one) for anything “private”.
Yes, this is a big photo competition in Texas. Seems like this would also work for AK as an alternative kind of hunt. One in which wild life ends up in digital pictures instead of a dinner plate or draped over the hood of a pickup.
City slicker photographers pay big bucks to test their skills at shooting wildlife.
Just a thought to any ambitious AK folks who might want to sponsor a photo hunt.

Thanks for the link. So ‘ WHO’s ‘ fault is it THIS time that its was reported … She’s coming… She’s NOT coming…. sounds like a broken record.
BTW : You may leave a comment there in the comments section, I did.
I was… and You are probably already recognized in their system if you comment here or on any other Blogger site. The comments are moderated… so you have to be polite with your message.
Palin broke into someones else e-mail account and she was not punished for it ,yet she complains about someone who got into her account.IMO neither were right but Palin makes it worse because she complains about something she herself did and got a way Scot free.
Dear mudpuppies, our central Pa. “Brian” is soon going to Paris for a naughty weekend. Stay tuned as Patricia and I introduce our brian to the bright lights of Paris. How do you keep the moose down on the farm after he has been to Paree!!!! oh la la.
By the way, any advice you could pass along for Brian’s big trip to Paris would be appreciated: tours, cafe’s, crazy things for a single moose to do in this amazing city? Also, how do you teach french very quickly to a moose?
I have read (and enjoyed) Mudflats for ages and haven’t ever written in, but I found something today that is prompting me to comment. Got a call today from a friend who just had to tell me about a Zig Ziglar seminar to be held on Feb 8 in Houston. Among the featured guests will be none other than … wait for it… yep… Ms. Ex-GOV herself, Sarah Palin! Among her topics will be “How to have Grace under fire” and “How to become a person of influence” (that one still has me laughing). Colin Powell and Rudy Guiliani are also on the list, with a few others.
Tickets are apparently dirt cheap, too, so I wonder how much she’ll demand for the appearance. They won’t be getting my money, that’s for sure!
Wow! Rachel just did a segment on Bristol’s LLC. I bet $P is chomping at the bit about this. Van Flein actually responded to her and made a non-statement. What gives with this story???? Anyone?

Happy new year mudpups!
I’m back in Chicago after a much needed vacation to Australia =) I can happily report that Christmas and New year was FANTASTIC in Sydney =)
So having just caught up on today’s news and blogs (thus far), I wanted to share this little gem from The Dish:

Sarah Palin – still dishonest and still secretive =) Nice to see some things just don’t change! Enjoy!
