The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Give ‘Em Hell Harry!

Harry Crawford is someone that I’ve known since before I became involved in matters political.  When I first put up an “About” page on Mudflats, I wrote this:

I am also fortunate to count as my friends some of those who hold elected office in this state, and remind me by example that there are good people out there in our state and city government who are intelligent, diligent, ethical, and working hard for the best interest of Alaska.

He’s one of the people I was talking about when I wrote that sentence.  There are candidates we meet during campaigns, or listen to on the radio and we have high hopes.  They sound really good.  We want to believe they are what they say they are.  And we put our trust in them because we are optimists at heart.  But it isn’t often that we know any of those people in our “real” lives.  But I know Harry Crawford and his amazing amazing wife Gwen (did I mention she’s amazing?) and I can tell you that they are both the real deal.  I like knowing that.

Harry is currently in the State House.  He’s not in my district and that always made me a little sad.  I’m stuck with Mike Hawker, and that’s just the way it goes.  But now, all that has changed and I’ll be able to vote for him after all, because he’s going to be taking on Don Young who is running for his 20th term in the U.S. House, in the face of looming indictments and in the middle of more shady deals than you can shake a stick at.  I can’t wait to vote!

But all this brings me to the purpose of this post.  Tonight (Thursday) there will be a fundraiser for Harry, and I’d like to encourage all who can make it to attend, and all who can’t make it to throw a few bills in his direction from wherever you are. We have the chance not only to get rid of a member of congress who really needs to be gone, but to replace him with a really great guy who is honest, and will work hard, and make thoughtful decisions for the benefit of all of us.  What more can you ask, than that?

Here are the details:

Thursday, January 7 from 5:30-7:30pm

At the home of Les Gara and Kelly Blummer

1242 West 10th Ave., Anchorage (on the corner of 10th and N on the Park Strip)

Help us send Harry off to Juneau one last time before we sent him to Washington, D.C. in November!

Read a late-night posting from ADN which included this paragraph:

A woman holding a sign advertising an anti-Palin Web site and another sign that read “Poor, poor Sarah. Why is everybody picking on me?” was asked to get a sign permit or leave. Hastings said she left.

Why would she need a sign permit? There was a public event going on in a public facility. She was holding signs with political messages. Or, in other words, exercising her free speech rights.

She ought to file a 1st Amendment claim with the “city” of Wasilla.

I went a lookin’ to see if a citizen needed a “sign permit” and did not see anything. As we all know , a building permit is not needed (thanks to sarah) , but : ” Your project must be reviewed and approved by the State Fire Marshall’s Office before construction, repair or remodel is started.” Wonder if all the “additions” at Casa de Palin are up to snuff ??

austin – perhaps Andree or some other interested AK citizen can file a public records request to the State Fire Marshall’s Office for that info? I wonder if a copy of whatever needs to be filed with the SFMO, and any respond thereto, is on file with the “city” of Wasilla or in Mat-Su Burrow?

Interesting… a Land Use Permit is required and there are landscaping standards but no building permit requirements. Strange way of doing things.

That was so nice. Sometimes all it takes is a smile to lift someone’s spirits. A few random acts of kindness each day or week makes your heart feel better.

Interesting times ahead as the Tea Partiers destroy the GOP. I find it difficult to understand how these idiots are getting such an amazing stranglehold by claiming that they are defending their Constitutional rights (such as free speech) while denying others theirs (if yer not with us yer agin us so ya can’t come to our party and ya can’t say anything we don’t want ya to). With Ms. Palin as their leader we can be assured of dark days to come.

Rachel Maddow is a “liberal troll,” not an MSM commentator. jeezus these people are incredibly closed minded. and proud of it also too. scary, damn.

austintx @2: She’s an idiot. I guess she has never had a claim denied by an insurance company. I guess she has never had to appeal said claim where some insurance company-paid paper pusher who is paid to say “denied” and use the term “not medically necessary” has to be educated as to what the medical professionals consider to be “medically necessary”. And then it continues to be denied. I will scream to the high heavens that she and her followers have no freakin’ idea of what they speak. I used to use the word a*s to describe GW, she only qualifies for idiot. I cannot understand how on earth anything she says deserves any semblance of credibility.

These people, under their Christian cloaks, will do whatever it takes to win and gain power so that they can tell the rest of America how to live. So you minorities (especially those of color) and gays better watch out. Woman might want to watch your step too because they know what is best for your bodies.

As for health care, Palin says to let the private companies make a profit, so if you’ve lost your job and your benefits, or if you’re denied coverage by your insurance company because you had another illness previously, then you’re just out of luck. Isn’t that the conservative American way? Isn’t that the Christian way?

No one on The Right ever deals with the actual issue – you may have insurance you like today, but you do not know what is going to happen tomorrow. As long as health insurance is tied to jobs – full-time jobs at that, I might add (’cause I do have a job – but not “full-time” and why I can’t even buy into the company’s plan is insane but I’m sure I couldn’t afford it anyway) we will continue to have too many American citizens without proper health care, extremely vulnerable to bankruptcy and losing homes, foreclosures …. and … how is this good for the American economy?

I usually never wish ill for people, but some of the folks who voiced their opinions against the public option? I just want THEM to lose their jobs and health care this year, and then see if they think voting against the health care bill was a ‘good idea’. Walk a mile, heck, even a step, in the shoes of the working, tax-paying American citizen who cannot, through a stupidly ridiculous system tied to the profit motive, afford a health plan worth the money they pay. I would HAPPILY pay more in taxes to not have to worry and wonder every time I don’t feel exactly right, if “it’s important enough to spend a lot of money and go see a doctor, or will I just ‘get over it’ all on my own?” Too many people opt for the latter, and that’s why too many Americans die in he country that Rush Limbaugh just recently bloviated has the ‘best health care system in the world’.

Speaking of Rush, his prattling on really makes me want to bash his smug face in (and I am normally a very mild person). No. Better still, I want to hide his cochlear implant.

    As the headline said :
“Going Vogue: Palin To Bilk $100k From Tea Party Movement For One Speech”

“It has now been reported by Palin supporter and conservative Dan Riehl that Palin will be charging the Tea Party Convention $100k for her Saturday Night Keynote address. This just appalls me and should raise red flags to anyone who thinks she is supporting the tea party movement simply because of their values and principles. After selling millions of books and making millions of dollars, Sarah Palin is now on the warpath to make every single dollar she can before she self destructs and people turn on her. ”

I get so aggravated with the right-winger teabaggers who whine that people who don’t have health insurance should just get a job, pay their fair share and adopt a healthy lifestyle and all will be well.

First off, having a job (for those who can find one) is no guarantee that insurance will be made available or affordable. Paying for decent private insurance is out of the question for those making less than Rush-me-to-a-hospital Limbaugh. And having a healthy lifestyle doesn’t always protect against serious illness, trauma or the idiot who runs a red light and slams into your car.

Seems to me the most ‘Christian’ people I’ve been hearing about lately are those dirty, rotten libruls who actually want to make sure everyone has the basic necessities of life, and helping people who are less fortunate than themselves. Now where have I heard that before???? Oh yeah, from that dirty, rotten librul guy named Jesus! Sheesh!!!
