Open Thread – The RAM is a Beautiful Thing
If my last computer was driven by an aging hamster on a wheel, my new one is controlled by this guy. Yes, I have RAM! 8 megs gigs of it, to be precise. It’s a beautiful thing. And I’m a happy camper. The process is complete, and The Mudflats is now better…. stronger…. faster! We have the technology! (Insert ‘Six Million Dollar Man’ music here)
Enjoy the open thread!

You must name him! We cannot have him being confused with the ‘other’ RAM. Perhaps a ‘name the ram’ contest? I will offer Bahhby, which is obviously ruminant for Robert!
8 megs… ?!?!?. Are you sure of that, AKM?. That would be barely enough to run Windows 95!
Should be 8 gigs
Beside, who would want to have 8 stapletons in her computer?
Interesting RAM. Congratulations on getting your new HP hooked up and running. Best wishes for continued smoothly executed blogging. And, thank you for sharing your integrity with us. ‘Flatters understand that integrity is a most important character trait.
Congrats on your new, improved RAM! Now come help me install my Windows7 upgrade.
Great picture! A long time ago (in the early 70s) there were actually big horn sheep in the Sandia Mts just outside Albuquerque. Congrats on the new computer – methinks you have a lot more than 8 megs of memory
Lots of RAM is good.
“8 megs of RAM”
That’s cute.
You’re like the Sarah Palin of the computer world, AKM! I still like ya, tho.
enjoy
When you compared the moving parts of the old computer to a hamster I chuckled as I relived my childhood in the backseat of a VW bug that made funny noises. My mom had us convinced that it was powered by hamsters and that was the cause of the funny noises!!
I’ve been away from the tech field for 10 years, since the birth of my oldest. Even back then in the ‘middle ages’ of computers as it were, 8 megs of RAM was not that much. But thanks for the chuckles!!! Nice relief after the last couple of posts.
Spouse and I were actually thinking about the 6 million dollar man on our drive to Christmas Vacation and wondering just how much he would cost with today’s excessive healthcare costs?? Perhaps 600 trillion dollar man? doesn’t sound as tight and neat though. After my son spent an imaginary 1 million for a school math project, I realized that 6 million could really go a long way. Unless of course you have to stay in hospital in ICU or CCU or some other U, a variety of specialists and tests later…..poof it’s gone!
Its GIGS woman, GIGS…8 megs is one uncompressed picture of, THE Meg perhaps.
Congratulations on the new RAM!! I know we’re are all going to enjoy it. I like the name Baahhby (h/t Tantef).
Never mind those silly teasers over there! I knew you meant 8 gigs. (We technologically illiterate need to stick together. I don’t speak computer either. LOL)
LOL at SJK. Too true. Sheesh, I remember when the updated my computer to 15 megs of RAM. It seemed like an ungodly extravagance at the time. O.o
Congrats on the new computer. Yay Mudflats!
Working your way up to terabytes, AKM. Way to go.
(terabyte = 1,024 gigabytes; gigabytes = 1,024 megabytes)
Is sarah like Chinese food ??
Asked about the national spotlight Palin has brought Alaska with her conspiracy-fueled tirades and baseless smears against Obama, Parnell conceded that the attention has been “some sour with the sweet”.
http://thinkprogress.org/2010/01/07/sour-palin-parnell/
I’m for “Benjamin the Ram”. You could call him Bennie for short. Then as pictures are uploading you could sing . .
“Bennie And The Jets”
I lucky to just turn my computer on and find the right keys.
Did ya all hear that Sarah is collect a hefty fee to headline the tea party convention? Some report as high as $100,000. What dedication to the cause eh.
And, no press allowed–now that’s a shocker.
http://politics.nashvillepost.com/2009/11/24/no-press-allowed-to-see-palin-speech-at-the-opryland-tea-party-convention/
Proved my point…my above post was meant to read I’m luck….
From now on, I will form a picture in my mind of these lovely (although tiny) animals running about in computers when someone tells me how much ram they have.
Let’s name him Vaughn!! It’s my favourite name =)
On another note – here is Firedoglake’s take on Bristol new PR/Lobbying company: http://firedoglake.com/2010/01/07/late-night-the-majestic-snowgrifts-of-alaska/
With a headline like “The Majestic Snowgrifts of Alaska”, you can’t go wrong! Gave me a good chuckle to start off my morning =)
Happy Friday!
P.S. These Palins, they really are enterprising. I have to hand it to ‘em. Next to Wall Street bankers, they’re practically the only people makin’ money in this recession!
So, how do GOP insiders feel about Palin being the headliner at the Teabaggers convention? I can’t imagine it’s good considering what these people did in NY. Sarah’s meddling (along with her rabid fans) lost the long held GOP seat. The teabaggers plan more of this in the future, and it seems they believe that Sarah is their gal for a candidate.
Hey, Hey…..go for it. I can’t wait for the sideshow.
Name = Trample
(To go along with Track, Trig, Tripp, etc)
Good morning, mudpups and TGIF! megs…heh heh, good one.
*pat pat* I knew what ya meant, AKM….computerspeak… blech!
Sporting a shiny new haircut today… always makes me feel thinner! Have a good weekend pups.
I got a nice chuckle off the RAM 8 Megs comment too, but won’t bother to clairfy since so many others have already done so.
As for naming the RAM, the name Dodge first popped into my head but I actually prefer the name Ralph the Ram
That was supposed to be C L A R I F Y not clairfy….
Looking at the picture, Ralph just seems to fit his expression.
Great pic by the way!
RAM? Megs? I get it, AKM, also too. Wink.
Hm…are ewe sure that’s a ram?
austintx thanks for the link. i’ve been under the impression that Parnell is no better than Sarah, but he did do something in the interview that i don’t think we’d ever hear from palin: say something nice about the president. oh nooo, sarah would never do that. she’s probably already ripping parnell a new one for it.
Keynote speaker for Tea-baggers, speakers fee of $ 100,000 and costing attendees $ 500/couple. This confuses me. Her performance as mayor and governor don’t represent their interests. As mayor she drove her town into debt. As Governor, she was the pork Queen asking for Stevens and Young to get her $ 900 million in Federal pork projects. She raised taxes on businesses, and expanded Government. She was for that bridge to nowhere, until they said she couldn’t build it. And then she kept the money anyway, spending it on other pork projects, such as the road to nowhere.
Your moment of Zen
http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-january-7-2010/moment-of-zen—calvin-trillin-s-prediction
Rachel or someone need to show that Road to Nowhere video clip… show people what Palin did with national taxpayers money!
I’m excited to get a new computer at the end of this month also too!
On another note… I just fell in love with a man I’ve never met. I got on the subject of politics with a young woman (blonde, cute). She said this past election was the first time her father ever voted. He voted for Obama in a heavily conservative area where he lives (CO). His best friends alienated him from activities they use to share. How brave and cool is that?
So many wonderful things to look forward to … Steve Schmidt on 60 minutes Sunday, and don’t forget, Geoffrey Dunn’s book, which he has been taking the time to write for years so he can research his claims, I presume, and maybe even make an index, comes out in the Spring.
I hope by “Spring”, they mean, like, March 22nd, and not June 20th.
Be interesting to compare sales of that book to Going Rogue. Sarah doesn’t seem to get that just because people are interested in her, that does not mean that they necessarily support her, or even like her.
Anyone got reliable stats on just how many copies of GR actually sold?
I read that Steve Schmidt will be on 60 Minutes this weekend, describing the behind the scenes attempts to get Sarah in shape for her debate last year. Sarah kept calling her Democratic opponent OBiden, and couldn’t get his name right, no matter how hard she tried. Schmidt and staff thought up the cute line, “Can I call you Joe?” to get Sarah away from the mistake. Sarah only slipped up once during the debate.
In honor of Steve Schmidt and the fearless debate coaches, maybe we can include “Joe” in RAM’s name.
That ram looks like a ewe.
Looks like Rambo to me. Congrats on the computer upgrade.
I’m bad & don’t know how to link but read something from a link at PG regarding a fairly conservative blogger’s take on winky demanding big $’s to speak at the tea bagger’s get together. The web site is: http://www.diggersrealm.com. It’s worth the read and the comments are also good. They’re not happy with sister sarah…..now someone can tell me how to post a link!
Congratulations on the computer upgrade, no matter how many megs or gigs you may have. I still remember when people were saying no one would ever possibly need more than a single meg of RAM. Of course, the second computer I used just had two 8 inch floppys and 64k of ram. Or something like that. The first computer I used was a mainframe and we had to use punch cards written in fortran to make it do anything. I was able to count fortran as my foreign language in college. That was probably the only time in my life when I was close to being within sight of the leading edge in computer technology.
duh, I guess I do know how to post a link! read it & please & pass it on!
when is the next court date for the Johnston-Palin custody circus ?
Uh oh John @36 – You are revealing your age! I also started off as a young thing with Fortran, main frame, and punch cards – at RCA in Anchorage. I feel like the current high-tech world has passed me by and I’m fortunate to deal with Windows Vista. Thank goodness most websites are so user-friendly or I’d never be posting anything.
#16 >OMG
Did ya all hear that Sarah is collect a hefty fee to headline the tea party convention? Some report as high as $100,000. What dedication to the cause eh.
——
You think she’ll really show up?
Loved this comment by common sense.
“Like a posh Klan meeting. Wow.”
It’s either a ewe or a young ram (from Fish and Game’s http://www.adfg.state.ak.us/pubs/notebook/biggame/dallshee.php page: Rams resemble ewes until they are about 3 years old.).
“The first computer I used was a mainframe and we had to use punch cards written in fortran to make it do anything.”
Moi aussi. But I was in HS. Luckily, I was in the last class to get into college that DIDN’T have to take a computer language to graduate with my major, because my typing inabilities would have made me flunk out. I was able to make it through with pairing up with friends and only had one program I had to write myself, without taking that hostile language known as fortran. I did take Italian and German, though.
#36 @john & #39 GG2C – Oh geez. I remember punch cards too. And the computer had its own ROOM which had to be air conditioned and kept closed so no nasty dust would get it in and screw everything up!
I had completely forgotten that till you mentioned it.
Worked with a guy that had many a tale of the old days in computers. He used to walk up and down the racks of vacuum tubes tapping them with little felt mallets to detect the “iffy” ones.
Does this date me? You betcha.
Re: megs, it made perfect sense to me, AKM, and I’m not ashamed to say it. LOL :::sitting on the non-geek couch with AKM::::
Best news today: the sun is shining, finally! Well, in between bursts of snow but at least it’s somewhat visible today. Feels great!
I read about Schmidt’s interview on 60 Minutes too, “O’Biden”??? (<~~~maybe this should be the best news….)
Worst news today: Guiliani not being called out for his statement on Good Morning, America saying there wasn't a terrorist attack under Bush's watch. I know others have voiced the same comment over the past few weeks but it's especially hurtful coming from the then mayor of NYC. America's Mayor? Hardly, more like America's A$$.
Here’s a great bit by Andrew Sullivan
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2010/01/palin-1-schmidt-0.html
As he would say, “here’s the money quote:”
you wonder if McCain’s massive blunder did not just destroy what hope he had in 2008, but was actually a slow-fuse detonator of the entire Republican coalition.
How about Rocky. He and that other Moose, Bullwinkel, were always up to something.
AKM, ewe rock!

Polly that was truly a cool and brave thing that man did. i honor him for it and like you i am in love. this is what integrity means. i hope he finds companionship and real friends and that he will be blessed all the days of his life
Ok, my first post went to moderation evidently. Do they just sit there for eons (or ions as the case may be) or do they eventually get released….?
Tnx, SMR #45 – that was certainly worth reading. I liked this part:
“Palin, with characteristic canniness, got in her own version of this story first. If Schmidt really wants to tell his side of this story, he needs to get real. But to get real, of course, he has to confess that he was guilty of near-criminal professional negligence in selecting Palin without knowing anything about her. And so Palin gets to tell her lies and spin with impunity. Because the GOP establishment is both so cynical and condescending to Palin’s base (she was absolutely right to smell elitist contempt in the mindset of McCain), they will never take the Palinites head on. And because the professionals are busted, Palin gets to define the party and perhaps divide it more profoundly. The ridden tiger keeps burning brighter.”
austin and a few other people had reminders yesterday that Rachel Maddow
would be appearing on Letterman. If you missed it… ( or fell asleep before it came on ) her is a link for you.
Rachel appeared once before her and Dave seem to have a very friendly raport.
He really seems to enjoy having her on the air with him. Enjoy.

8 GB RAM – that means 64-bit and Windows 7? If you are running Win 7, please share your impressions of it once you get used to it.

John @ 39 — Thanks for the flashback. When I took Fortran, I never saw the computer – an IBM System 360 which, according to legend, had its own dungeon in the basement of the Admin building. The high point of many a day was rushing to the Engineering building first thing in the morning to see if my program ran successfully the previous night (drop off the cards one day; pick up the results the next day) and discovering that it had actually run.

As un-fond as I am of Microsoft’s operating systems, and particularly with their dictatorial approach to users, it is refreshing to occasionally find that Microsoft has made the effort to do something nice for us. If you have a connection fast enough for SilverLight, you may enjoy checking out Microsoft’s free application WorldWide Telescope. It’s pretty cool.
http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/Home.aspx
Microsoft also offers a free graphics editing program that has earned good reviews – it was developed by some students at Washington State Univ who now work for Microsoft. Google Paint.NET
Wavin’ to all the old school “punch cards n’ Fortran” mudpups. My very first job at the tender age of 17 landed me with a company that needed a card puncher. Had never even heard of such a thing but I learned quickly. Then I began to learn Fortran and Cobol on the side. ( i think the only thing I remember is the ” if / then / else routine ) I would run the card piles up to the HUGE room filled with monster computers and would return with the tapes. And then, one day, our department rolled in what all of us geeks viewed as a miracle. It was a “micro computer” that ran on mini tapes. Well the dang micro was the size of a commercial stand up freezer on wheels. I’m quite sure AKM’s old PC could run circles around what that thing could do back in the day.
Funny to remember it. Thanks !
@SMR #45-Wow, that was a powerful article thanks for the link. I’m wondering what McShame’s reaction will be to the Schmidt interview on 60 Minutes.
The queen of divisiveness continues her march through the republican party. Of course the queen will not align herself with the GOP, she’s too busy funneling their money into her pockets.
Hope winky & klan are keeping their eyes on palingates. Two clips now from Steve Schmidt’s interview. Silly sarah isn’t gonna like them. He comes right out and calls her a lying sack. Maybe she should have thought twice about dissing him and other big dogs in her insipid little book of lies. It’s weird though, I thought Schmidt was on 60 minutes but Anderson Cooper is doing the second interview. I’m sure AC is on the nitwit’s list because of the infamous beating down of meg on the phone interview he did. He’s capable of a very rude dismissive attitude fitting of his “elitist” background. And of course, he’s now from the “real America.”
last line from my last post “not” not “now” as in Not from the real America!

interesting read…so let’s put some ‘action’ behind our name-calling…2010 is here and we need to ALL vote…do NOT feel defeated and sit home on those important days (local & national)…PLEASE GET OUT THERE!!!…otherwise, the “crazies”, in numbers we can’t comprehend, will support & vote their candidate into bossing (controlling) the rest of us…yikes!… capice?
I’m very excited to hear about BLIO from the CES in Las Vegas by way of NPR this morning.
As a school librarian, I’ve been waiting for eTextbooks and e-ink on readers does not meet educational needs. If BLIO is everything it promises, there’s our transition to eTextbooks. Apple may be shipping some sort of tablet or iSlate in Q2.
I can see Apple teaming with McGraw, Prentice or Houghlin going to the state and saying “adopt our eTextbooks across the board and we’ll supply the tablets with BLIO for $xxx.xx at a discount.” It can’t happen soon enough for me. At $100 a pop and up, and with four or more textbooks per child, we aren’t going to be able to afford to provide books for them to mutilate and lose. BLIO also provides universal access for students (large font, audio, video, etc) like no textbook can do. Time to enter the 21st century.
I hope too see it in the next 4-10 years. Hopefully before I retire.
In the meantime, the minute they release a MAC version, I’ll be downloading it and reading a few Gutenberg free books to evaluate how it works.
Oh, and there’s a court case today FCC versus Comcast regarding the FCCs authority to regulate. Should be an interesting net neutrality case.
And if you haven’t read Gryphen’s Immoral Minority, Steve Schmidt should be dumping on Sarah Sunday night on 60 min. Have some popcorn on standby in case it gets really good.
O’Biden. Bwa ha ha.
It’s my birthday today and the mountain goat is the symbol of Capricorn. Thanks!
Also, too, I am having my favorite food for dinner: Alaskan King Crab. “clean Alaska protein” as Miss O’silla would say.
Nice to see Gryphen, Palingates et al finally learning to save pages in case they get deleted. Nothing like a good archive to prove your point when attempts are made to cover tracks. And Google Cache isn’t reliable.

Steve Schmidt goes for the jugular. It’s going to be so nice to hear someone say the truth on the real media…
O’Biden.. and even after they let her call him Joe, she called him Senator O’Biden anyway… on live tv. Idgit.
Happy Birthday
Lilybart–Happy Birthday (though that’s actually a Dall Sheep, not a mountain goat).
O.K. people, I am so spitting mad at something I just read in the Salt Lake paper, I could just scream. Read this and weep…….
a few months after school officials in Utah’s Republican strongholds adamantly opposed any effort to allow schoolchildren to watch an address from the president of the United States at school, Utah County schools are collaborating with the Utah County Republican Party to hold an essay contest for sixth-graders extolling the greatness of Ronald Reagan…………………………………….

I’m furious. Remember the big stink about NOT letting children listen to the President of the United States? Now, the Republican party is actually collabarating with the schools to have the kids write essays about how great Reagan was as a President. Are you frickin’ kidding me? This needs some national and viral attention. This is an outrage.

love you both
Happy Birthday, LilyBart!
Please, y’all, let’s not get all technical here. : ) I’m still operating on my 5 yr old Dell which, until a couple of months ago, only had 256K of RAM…and I wondered why it was so slow. So I added 1G and now, it’s fine. Well, someone else put it in. Beats banging my head against the wall, waiting, waiting, waiting (and glad I didn’t follow the advice of those who told me to get a new computer, which isn’t doable).
Of course, my grandson got a new computer with 8Gs of RAM so he could game…young people today! Now, he’s threatening to get me a new computer…I told him to save his cash.
Happy Birthday, Lilybart!!!!!!!
From Andrew Sullivan’s mouth to God’s ears! His take on McCain’s “ruined” career is a lovely read for those of us trying to turn AZ Blue! I dream of the day I won’t have to ride the bus past McCain’s office, flipping him the “Bird” as I pass.
to mlaiuppa – I just checked out Blio and it sounds fantastic! And it is free and coming next month! I hope it will allow me to read my online library books, but if not, there appears to be lots I can read through this software program. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Something to look forward to in a positive way.
I am using Windows 7 and I really like it. It seems to be more responsive and I’ve not had glitches with it. But, to be clear, I am kinda of a microsoftie and googler aficionado, so there is a bit of bias here
No offense to linux, apple, and other OS users out there.
I certainly hope that Grandma O’Palin is going down – it can’t be soon enough for me.

First, Happy Birthday to lilybart, twain, and Mireille (my sister was 61 Monday). Next, here’s a link to an LA Times science article on the effects of mountaintop removal coal mining, as a follow up to … don’t cough up a lung. I take action all the time (via coalriver.org, sierraclub.org, etc.) on this vital issue. Massey et al. claim to do remediation, but that’s BS — they destroy waterways, ecosystems, and lives with their greed. Health and peace, all!

I just looked at the Blio website and it is AWESOME! I am definitely interested in that. You can use it on an iPod also!
I can see how useful it would be to replace textbooks. The price of them is terrifying. And sometimes you can’t even get them used, because professors want a particular edition. And for kids, it would be wonderful too. They wouldn’t have to carry heavy books in their backpacks.
I can see this revolutionizing education in amazing ways. It also has audio! Very exciting.
MSNBC just reported that GOP insiders have voted Mtt Romney at 62% as ther choice for the 2012 nominee. $arah O’Paylin is tied in 5th place. Nuff said.
Happy Birthday Buddin’ Lil’ Bubbles and Lilybart!!!
Thanks for the link @58 Lainey !
JC @56 – “Winky & Klan” is a very disturbing graphic novel series, waiting to happen. Fly ? Take it away!
Trisha @65 – ARGH!!!! that did not sit well with my evening. you’re right – that needs to get circulated. I just loathe these people. They’re insane!
re: puters – I was generally content with my middle of the road custom built that I got for $300 and the nice middle of the road speed it allowed me . But last night I lost the wireless connection that I had been happily snagging from somewhere in the neighborhood ethers. As of this morning it hadn’t returned and I have been forced to go back to …… (deep staggered breath ) Dial Up …via AOL ! My world has been rocked and in the opposite of a good way .
On the plus side for the day – I found a pile of albums that I didn’t realize were still in the house . ( I moved back into my childhood home after Mom died). Found in a box : Sinatra, Elvis, Jackson 5, Johnny Cash, Righteous Brothers, readings by JFK, and more. Also found a pile of sixty or so 45s. Wish I had a turntable ! Gryphens post about the Cartoonist being threatened shows how simple minded these Tea-Baggers are…. and how they think physical violence is the answer to everything… anywhere. Imagine…. the nerve of a guy using their own EXACT words and making them look foolish. What happened to THEIR AmuriKa?
IM’s story links back to The Daily Kos which has some additional clips.
Don’t miss the MAD TV clip. They pretty much nailed it.

I have been using Mobipocket,a free ereader app.I have it on my Pc,and I use an old Toshiba PDA as a portable ereader. My DD uses an HP Ipaq PDA,both bought for a song on EBAY.(Mine was $2.25!!) I wonder if Blio will be able to be downloaded to our PDA’s? It looks beautiful !
Lots of free books out there if you do a Google search.I Searched “free romance ebooks” for DD,found lots, but Sci-Fi,Fantasy,seem to have the most, and there are all of the classics pretty much for free. DD is currently rereading her favs from highschool.
I hope etextbooks do become the norm,it makes sense for so many reasons!!
Speaking of RAM, I was just swimming in the See of who-know-what and I can definitely say Meg got her talking point point about Sarah not speaking at CPAC from R.A.M.
She (RAM) wrote an article about it late last summer over there. That was not too long after the Newsweek article was published that had an interview with CPAC organizer David Keene that was very critical of Sarah Palin, but I thought the criticisms were fair. I even got the impression that he liked her, but the C4P people labeled him as having “rabid hatred’ for her.
Now, I’m not saying the FedEx thing didn’t happen, or that it is OK (heck, I don’t actually understand it) but using my new favorite word, Sheesh!
Now, all this happened last year, by end of Summer. So you’d think, if SP was working by the principals Meg claims she is, then the minute the invitation to speak came in, Meg would have brought it to Sarah’s attention, Sarah would have said “No, sorry I can’t condone Keene’s shameless subversion of Conservative principals, I cannot participate, please e-mail him and tell him ‘thanks but no thanks’ for the invite”.
And if Keene had so much disdain for SP, why would he invite her back? Especially when that was one of the “i’m coming, no I’m not, yes, no, maybe, uh ….no” debacles of last year?
They’re (C4Pers) now trying to claim its also ’cause Sarah doesn’t want to be (or can’t afford to be? Not sure) linked to the lunatic fringe people of the John Birch Society.
Isn’t it a little late for that?
Happy Birthday Lilybart & Baby Bubbles!!!! Enjoy your day!
A cute little RAM there.
Hey BuffaloGal, I just saw a USB turntable at Costco yesterday – bet you would have fun with that! Hook it up to your ‘puter and sing away while creating CD’s of your old records. That sounds like a fun party

About voting. I totally agree with you. This is our duty, the price we pay for our privileges. One should not even debate the thought of going to the voting booth. I have always taken this very seriously, and arranged so I could also have a little fun, with friends, a nice restaurant, more political debate, whatever.
There are very few excuses for not getting your vote in. I know I sound like a preaching b**ch, but it’s worth it just to get the message out. And I’ll even try to make you feel guilty if you don’t get your backside moving.
Apart from that, I’m quite a lovable person.
Yeah……..mine went into tube space and then double posted………must be the RAM gizmo.
Irishgirl – I found the “F” word in German. It’s real close to the Irish version.

RAM = computer memory, yea, but goat does not equal male sheep. Damn Nit picky facts. TGIF, all. Have a nice weekend.
AKM, when do you think you’re going to have “some news” for us? The new year is upon us, does it have to do with the mysterious envelope? Right about now would be good timing. All we have now is winky trying to get her Klan to influence judges regarding the custody case that has nothing to do with her & Steve Schmidt coming out and declaring her to be a lying sack of poopoo.
I’m working on it! AKM

I think the flats went down. Too many megs on AKM’s pooter.
Congrats on the new computer! Having just had to replace one, I completely understand the joy!
I heard someone make a distinction between COMPUTER
NATIVES, such as my ten year old grandson, who dispite having
little computer time, is totally comfortable with it,
and adept.
and IMMIGRANTS, such as I….obvious why…
Did help, but my computer still yells louder and louder
when I don’t understand it, then goes mute.
I just got this news & don’t know whether to laugh or cry. . .
This is my neck of the woods.
And kind of like pollution ~ I would rather she stayed far far away,
or disappeared entirely.
SARAH PALIN COMING TO LOUISVILLE
The Phil Waldrep Ministries’ “Women of Joy” Conference welcomes former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin . She is scheduled to be in Louisville on April 16th. Palin will speak during the conference about her New York Times Bestseller’s List book entitled “Going Rogue”.
Watching the clip of Rachel Maddow on Letterman makes me think of how much she resembles another great cultural hero for our time. Is Rachel the Harry Potter of journalism?

Jane Austen’s Pride and Predjudice fits neatly into my 1826 mile bi-annual road trip.
Oh, joy! thanks AKM (for envelope working on it).

Thanks everyone! The crab was delicious and my husband made an amazing chestnut/apple soup from the Cafe Daniel cook book.
I bought chocolate cupcakes on the way home from work.
I think New York City should now be called, ” The Big Cupcake’ because there is a cupcake place on every block it seems!
Lana -
Go and laugh and take pictures………
Happy Birthdays, thanks for links and great comments to all. Don’t know what I would do without this place for refuge.
Dear AKM, I need the envelope and am trying to be patient – also I think the ram’s name is Jo’Rama and he/she is going to do a great job for you (o:
Some thoughts on loading Windows 7 from PC Magazine:

If you are upgrading, make sure you have a full backup first – including software.
My clients have a real variety of computers. VISTA is an unstable disaster, and has a nasty habit of rolling back to prior versions of software that is open when it does an update. This is not so great, since it doesn’t tell you what, exactly, it decided to erase. So far 7 seems to be better, though it still has that nasty “fade in/out” feature that slows things down, and you still can’t just shut it down and go, because it often decides to run several updates when you go to shut it down. Why, exactly, does brand new software need so many updates? It also won’t run one of my flash drives, which works fine on XP and VISTA, and I am constantly finding myself frustrated because working with it is so much less efficient than working on my Mac. I may upgrade to a newer Mac someday, but I don’t think I’ll ever buy another PC.
On my own computer, I run both OS X and use Parallels to run XP so I can use some software that isn’t Mac compatible. Having done what amounted to paying Microsoft for the privilege of beta testing Windows 95, 98, XP, and VISTA, I’ll be waiting for all the bugs to be worked out by others before I spend any money on an upgrade to 7.
Happy birthdays, Mireille and Lilybart, and thanks to all the pups for the groovy links!
If that ram is actually a youngun, perhaps we could call him/ her O’Lamba.
I sincerely hope you have more than 8 megs of RAM. I think my flashlight does. Now, 8 GIGABYTES of RAM… that would be much more impressive.
I’ve been following David Kernell’s electronic trespassing faux pas, and i tell you this article has a paragraph that infuriates me at BTQ$ even more:

**** Hearing rumors that Ruedrich was leaking confidential state information to a natural gas company, she and a technician hacked into Ruedrich’s e-mail account one evening and found evidence that he was conducting Republican Party business from his public office—an offense with which Palin was familiar, since she’d sent out flyers promoting herself from the mayor’s office in Wasilla when she was running for lieutenant governor in 2002. She reported Ruedrich to the governor, demanding that he be sacked. When nothing happened, she threatened to resign herself if Ruedrich didn’t go. Murkowski reluctantly told Ruedrich to step down or be dismissed. Two months later, in January 2004, Palin herself resigned from the commission, telling the press that she’d been gagged by the governor from speaking in public about Ruedrich’s ethical violations. ****
She’s such a projector.
Congrats on the new machine, AKM! We advise our end-users to never use a computer bigger than themselves ~ in case it needs to go out the window.
Wow! Lawrence O’Donnell has a scathing commentary about Rudy Guiliani’s GMA interview on Countdown. No doubt as to what O’Donnell thinks of Guiliani!

Tina, I’m never sure whether to be more disturbed by her hypocrisy, or the way her fans choose to completely disregard the facts about her and suspend rational thought so they can keep up the fantasy that she is their messiah come to save them.
Someone by the name of Lola posted this link on Palingates.
This is a REALLLLLLY good read. This story lets fly with everything… talk about a Granny Smackdown. They cover a LOT of stuff.

“Conservatives Turn on Palin, Warning her to “Get Over Herself” ”
“Conservative darling Sarah Palin has been able to grift millions off of her teabagging cult since quitting her governorship midterm, claiming she was doing it to “progress Alaska,” but now conservatives are starting to see Palin’s real motivations and are telling her to get over herself.”
This is very interesting.. or curious…. or something..?
A certain ‘ anonymous ‘ person on Bree Palin at “January 9, 2010 2:17 AM ” ( under the O’Sarah, O’Biden story post ) is telling a lot of little personal things about when S’error … and ” this person” were in school. Lots of names ( schoolmates ) are mentioned as sort of a reference to tell us that they REALLY were in school and class together and know what they are talking about. They don’t seem to ‘like ‘ Sarah either. THAT doesn’t sound good.
Is anonymous letting S’error know that this person really has some Facts/dirt and maybe some more information will also be released later…?
{ Everybody KNOWS S’error and Meg read all the blogs… is this person talking to S’error..? Hmm… }
And what ‘information’ might come out … later…? Because I have a feeling this ‘ person ‘ has more to say. About what… who knows? We’ll wait and see.
Are people now starting to talk…..
It’s a camel’s nose thing.
Or the little boy with his finger in the dyke.
The dyke is starting to crack and that little finger isn’t going to be able to stop the flow anymore. The crack will widen and once the trickle starts it will start to erode until there is a flood of information out there. Even after you separate the wheat from the chaf there will still be plenty of sustenance left to make a substantial meal. While Sarah dines on crow the media will be feasting on Sarah.
Polly and Bubbles Me to and if those people acted like they did because of his political leanings they are not true friends. He us better off with out them i have friends from different political leanings sometimes we argue other times we just let things go but we don’t do what this persons so called friends did.i have a friend in California i have known for over 40 years, yes that dates me too,any way she is and always will be a Hillary fan she did not vote period because Hillary did not win.Her choice but IMO someone that does not vote has no reason to complain. By the way she thinks Brown is a jack a– also and we agree on that. But them so is the republican that is running. Why can’t they get someone decent??
Lainey I agree with the voting I read a book by a fundie preacher,Don;t know what else to call him and he has no changed his thought process and Bob likes president Obama. At ant rate he tells of how the mega churches are working to get religion back into government one step at a time. They start with school boards and just keep moving up sort of like palin did.Scary thought. We sure don’t need what I would call an American Taliban where we all had to think and have the same belief systems.
Happy Birthday lilyhart and Bubbles daughter.
HonestyinGov That video about the teabaggers was funny. It was better than the one they made up about the 3 witches at any rate except for SP under the house or bus whatever.
I would love to have 8 gigs of RAM!
(in the voice of Napoleon Dynamite)
Luh-cky!
