    Good Morning America!

… and here from POLITICO on the new book [released Saturday/yesterday] on the 2008 election: “Game Change”

“Frustrated over the campaign following her disastrous interview with Katie Couric, Sarah Palin said she regretted accepting the Republican vice presidential nomination. “If I’d known everything I know now, I would not have done this,” she said. McCain’s high command, already worried about her lack of eating and drinking and fearing that she was suffering from post-partum depression, convened a conference call and discussed whether she was mentally unstable.”

“Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton issued a statement in response to “Game Change” touting the former governor’s own insider account.”

a couple of more tidbids [same source]:

“–Before she was tapped as the vice presidential nominee, McCain’s campaign team devoted only five days to vetting Palin and her seventy-four-part questionnaire. But Palin herself only spent a few hours filling it out – an act which had “consumed weeks for other short-listers.” Ultimately, a forty-two-page vetting report of Palin was crashed by McCain’s team in a matter of 40 hours.

“–Upon finding out that McCain had tapped Palin as his running mate, Vice President Dick Cheney called it a “reckless choice,” believing the Alaska governor was unprepared for high office.”

My apologies if I’ve posted ‘old news’

Interesting that this new book is published by Harper Collins. I am guessing this might be one of the reasons Going Rogue had to be rushed to market months early.
Between Schmidt’s interview tonight and this new book release this is the start of one very bad week for $P. Let the avalanche of info begin!

From megacephalus: “her seventy-four-part questionnaire. But Palin herself only spent a few hours filling it out”

Sounds like she “wrote” her memoir like she fills out questionnaires…

megacephalus @1 – Thanks for those snippets. This was a little more than I’ve seen earlier. If these are the things that are the things that are being revealed from the campaign can you even imagine what must still be under wraps ?? I would love to have been a fly on the wall for the discussions about whether Granny $’error is possibly mentally unstable. That had to be one freaked out McCain camp. I hope this opens up the floodgates .

I can already hear the Palinbots and their cries of ” The GOP needs to destroy $’error because they are terrified ( $’errorfied ? ) of her godliness and they’ll do anything to get rid of her. Lies. All LIES!!!” I’m sure Satan has something to do with it as well.

Off to read Meg’s response. I wonder how you respond to and spin , “mentally unstable”? She’ll be earning her SarahPac dollars this week, o yes she will.

I wonder if they’ll touch on this on Meet the Press. I’ll be peeved if they only talk about Harry Reid’s remark and let this one go. An incompetent and perhaps unhinged running mate trumps a stupid politically incorrect gaffe any day.

Later on the interview, he mentioned how “articulate” SP is. No wonder I couldn’t understand him – he was talking word salad, too!

A few thoughts “Game Change and the article @1 –

The bit about Elizabeth Edwards referring to her husband as a hick really bothered me because I have high regard for her. I’d like to think that it’s not true or it’s taken out of context but if I’m willing to squint my eyes on that one then I have to do the same for the Palin coverage. Quandry!

Re: Harry Reid’s remarks about Obama’s light skin working in his favor – I have to say that I believe that to be true as well. It’s an unfortunate reality and I see it as one that is changing as time goes on but I think it’s a truth that it helped Obama in some sectors.

Re: the tension between Obama and Biden towards the end of the campaign – Was that really all that much of a secret ? Wasn’t it sort of an unspoken assumption that after Biden’s bout of “foot in mouth” disease that Obama was getting frustrated ? It would only be human for them to get tense with each other.

And re: Biden saying that he felt more qualified than Obama for the presidency — Is that really so shocking either ? If I were Biden I’d have felt the same way and as a voter I’ll say that I think he is more qualified ( or at the very least he’s much more experienced ) For awhile there I wished that ticket was turned around. I thought that it would’ve been better to have an experienced statesman with foreign policy experience upfront and the eloquent, intelligent Constitutional law expert in the “next in command and learning the ropes” position. We would’ve still had the same team , it would’ve still been monumental and historical and it would’ve positioned Obama for a 2012 or 2016 run. Seemed more logical to me.

I’m interested in hearing more from the book but I just don’t see some of the revelations as terribly shocking. Unfortunately, if the Dem spin doctors come out to counter things then Palin’s camp is going to use that in their favor saying, “See? Everyone agrees these writers don’t have their facts straight”. I’d rather the Dems just leave it alone or simply admit , ” Yep – there was tension there from time to time and that’s to be expected. Not a biggie”

Hmmm… this was longer than intended. I think the action of typing was helping to keep me warm this morning! ( 2 degrees!)

From the book Game Change about John Edwards:

Edwards (Palin) reveled in being inside the bubble: the Secret Service, the chartered jet, the press pack, the swarm of factotums catering to his (her) every whim. And the crowds! The ovations! The adoration! He (She) ate it up.

    Morning everybody!
Just a few thoughts about our favorite mentally unstable quitter/twitter queen.
These are just my our thoughts.
I think the reason palin bailed as Gov. had several reasons.
    1. The pipeline that she championed and made her the queen of energy according to McCain, is going nowhere fast(read Andrew Halcro’s blog) and she did not want to be associated with it’s failure. It will be an albatross around her neck, but did not happen on ‘her’ watch.
    2. Her book had to come out before any of the other damaging books did.
She did not want to do the ‘hard’ work of governing and the money was too darn good to pass up.
I’m not sure she will ever really run for the presidency. She has to know by now, how much hard work it would take and she can get all the same perks by being rich and famous. SHe will string her cult members along and get all the free money from them that she can. She will be the devil’s advocate between the republicans, tea baggers and the democrats.
    3. She was very very lucky with Trigg. I saw a mom with a very handicapped Down syndrome girl in the store. She looked exhausted. The girl was a handful and very impaired. Can you imagine the queen dealing with that kind of situation? A prop that could not be used and made to work to her advantage.
    4. I think that in the end, she will be caught in a scandal of epic proportions that only the crazy can ignore.
    5. Or, I may be totally wrong and she will follow bush’s example and win the presidency by deceit and treachery. I live about 25 miles from Canada, I’ll send you all postcards!!!!

I wish the whole Edwards saga would just go away. Yes….it would have been disastrous had he won the election and then all was revealed. I am sure he knows that he has no further chances of holding any important elected office.

Elizabeth has been (and still is) going through such trauma with her cancer. She is a brilliant lady and has been a strong advocate for the poor and for health care reform. The effects of cancer-treatment drugs, to say nothing of the mental toll it takes knowing you are dying and your time is limited, would affect anyone negatively. Then add in the husband’s illicit affair(s) and so much publicity, it is no wonder she has been vocal.

If only the media would dwell on something of real importance to dwell on and let the Edwards settle their issues in private, and allow them a little peace and quiet with their young children, with whatever time is left to them.

  22. 23
    terpsichoreNo Gravatar says:

Actually, laprofesora, “read the book” is a smart response – for Sarah. If she does anything else, like opens her mouth about it, she’s bound to say something that contradicts what she wrote in the book! That’s why she declined to be interviewed by CBS. When you lie so much, you can’t remember the lies you told.

I bet you anything the person who is her new handler told her not the talk to CBS for that very reason, and wow, she actually listened to the good advice.

Let’s see if she can keep her yap shut after tonight’s 60 Minutes broadcast. I hope so. It’s been so nice and quiet (too quiet?) without her blathering.

  23. 24
    MarnieNo Gravatar says:

One of the many items to add to the list of reasons Sarah is so mentally out of whack may be her diet. If her eating habits were significantly weird for McCain’s staff to make them an issue, then they probably were pretty significantly out of the norm.
Fat and complex carbohydrates in some form is a necessary component of a healthy diet. They are a necessary part if maintaining good central nervous system function.

Sarah appeared increasingly anorexic during the campaign and continues to do so, if she is not eating a balanced diet with an appropriate amount of fat or oil and or complex carbohydrates as well as other nutrients, her brain isn’t functioning correctly.
The ability to concentrate, form permanent memories, and process through complex problems are affected, and Sarah seem so suffer in all these areas.
Caffeine can make you hyper and nervous, but does not help cognitive processing.

Arguably, any person who is so imbalanced that they are suppressing the normal hunger sensations has already stepped into a area of mental imbalance, denial, and self destruction anyway.

And we know from Sarah’s other behaviors that she does live in her own fantasy land, that includes lots and lots of denial.

  24. 25
    MoNo Gravatar says:

Let’s pretend our country is governed by rich people, with CEOs controlling most of the money and lobbyists making sure Congressional pockets are kept suitably stuffed and the presidential race is suitably financed.

The Republican party is apparently no longer able to marshall a majority around the likes of the Teabaggers, which, with Sarah Palin, the rich guys view with as much distaste as dog doo on the bottom of their shoes.

How to distance onself from any sort of stinky populist tendencies, whilst reinforcing American’s adulation of the rich and famous?

How to keep pretending that an uber-rich lifestyle is within reach of any American with the ambition and luck to pursue and grasp it, so the riff-raff doesn’t break out the tumbrels and demand higher taxes, for instance. “Don’t wanna tax those hard-working CEOs, I might be one some day.” Snort! As if!

So we see the tentacles pulling back from Palin and ink being leaked into the water that Edwards [and by implication, all the rest of those Democrats] is just like Palin…but what next? Guesses, anybody?

  25. 26
    lilyfNo Gravatar says:

I agree, Marnie. I think that Palin did not like standing next to Cindy McCain and some of the ultra thin New York stylists. She saw that next to the fashionable wealthy repubs, she was a dowdy, chubby frump. She is extremely competitive, and that pic of her with the “frowny face”, when she is standing next to C. McCain, who looks lovely in a body skimming frock while SP stands there in a chin-high extremely conservative jacket, tells it all. She stopped eating and drinking until she had to buy EVEN MORE clothing, and when she did get more it was shorter skirts, leather jacket, shiny patent boots, and breast-hugging blouses. THat’s why they spent so much money…she dieted herself out of the appropriately professional clothing purchased by the RNC, then had her staffers purchase sexier, smaller stuff. Then she felt better standing next to Hollywood repubs and skinny Cindy. Just my opinion.

I watched This Morning and was very irritated to see Liz Cheney at the Roundtable. WHY do these shows keep inviting her to be part of the discussion????? Her sole purpose is to put down the President and to defend her father and the the rest of the Bush administration. I understand that there needs to be a variety of opinions on any discussion panel, but there have to be hundreds of conservatives who are more experienced, intelligent and respectable than she is. Liz Cheney just needs to shut up and go away.

Naturally, she complained about the Reid comment regarding Obama’s skin color made during the campaign. It was a stupid thing to say but she ripped the ‘liberals’ for being allowed to dismiss racist comments when conservatives are always called on them. One of the other guests (I think it was Al Hunt) said something I thought was pretty interesting. He said that just because someone mentions race, it doesn’t automatically mean that the comment is ‘racist’.

Okay, now I need to go have a nice bowl of chicken soup and let my blood pressure return to normal!

Remember that Elisabeth was going through devasting cancer treatments at the time ,with the exhaustion, depression, anxiety, and sickness that goes with them.At the same time, her husband was putting himself first with the campaign. She was dealing with the stress and anxiety and exhaustion of the campaign and of her husbands selfishness, hisl ies to the American public, and his infidelity to her. At a time when her husband should have suspended his campaign and supported his wife ,he was more worried about himself, his needs, his wants, his mistress.Im sure that there were many over the years,or why else would his aides have been so afraid of women accosting him?
I can forgive her if in moments of pain, anger, depression, exhaustion, sickness, etc, she lashed out at him.I understand that she may well have lashed out at his parents for raising a spoiled sefcentered brat, especially if they seemed to feel he should be excused for his actions because he is a man and he is popular.

We are all human, after all,and even a saint would have lashed out at such treatment by the son and the parents who raised him and still believe he is some sort of golden boy.

My husband took care of me during cancer treatments years ago.A man who nevr raised a finger around the house(grew up with 9 sisters) never cooked, never even mowed the lawn(I was an over achiever back then),he cared for me,shopped, cooked(Marie Callender I thank you!),cleaned, paid the bills, did the yard work, took care of the dogs and the grandkids,he took me to appointments and got my prescriptions.I still got sad or angry at times, and mad at the world, and he helped me through. John Edwards holds no candle to my DH with all his faults!!

I’m looking forward to hearing more about it this week when it’s released. And the fact that it’s being published by Harper Collins DOES say something about the timing of Sarah Palin’s book coming out so early, and being part of the equation in Sarah Palin’s resignation as governor when she did that. Things are coming out and fitting together now. Very interesting… And we haven’t even heard the whole “60 Minutes” interview with Steve Schmidt yet. As I said somewhere else, if she keeps this up, she will not physically make it through the year – I don’t mean she’ll die, I just mean her body will physically collapse.

Just finished Frank Rich’s column about what the rich are doing to this country, whilst we gossip about the likes of John Edwards, Sarah Palin…

“What we don’t know will hurt us, and quite possibly on a more devastating scale than any Qaeda attack. Americans must be told the full story of how Wall Street gamed and inflated the housing bubble, made out like bandits, and then left millions of households in ruin. Without that reckoning, there will be no public clamor for serious reform of a financial system that was as cunningly breached as airline security at the Amsterdam airport. And without reform, another massive attack on our economic security is guaranteed. Now that it can count on government bailouts, Wall Street has more incentive than ever to pump up its risks — secure that it can keep the bonanzas while we get stuck with the losses. ”

“Since almost no one is willing to identify with the GOP these days, it can be difficult to diagnose conservatism. Here are some tips to help determine if you are a conservative:
    10) You refused to share your toys in kindergarten, saying it would put you on a dangerous path to socialism.
    9) You get angry when there are choices for languages on an automated call because you still don’t have a good grasp on English.
    8) You hate those “elite Hollywood liberals” but refuse to cancel your Netflix account.
    7) You go to tea bagger rallies because you have no job thanks to the recession that “started under Obama.”
    6) You watch Fox News, but unlike most people actually take it seriously.
    5) You become absolutely livid about imaginary tax increases.
    4) You are against wasteful programs like Medicare, but also against cutting waste from programs like Medicare.
    3) You criticize Michael Moore for his weight, without being able to refute a single claim that he makes in his documentaries.
    2) You can enter any collective noun into the following sentence “The ______ are screwing everything up” except for the correct ones.
    1) You find yourself saying “no” even to things that you actually want, like ice cream, and health care.”

mommom & GG2C – I entirely agree with you re: Elizabeth Edwards having every reason in the world to lash at John and with everything she was going through I’m amazed she held together so very well and didn’t give him a huge dose of angry reaction because he’d deserve whatever she could throw at him. But the quotes they used in the Politico story made it sound as if she was arrogant and haughty and just didn’t sound at all like her. That’s what caught me by surprise. I’ve always admired her greatly and wished that she would run for office, back in the day. So, my first reaction was to want to assume the quotes were out of context but then I felt that if I could do that for her I’d have to give room for that to be the case for Palin. I think that’s more of where I was going with that .

And mommom – you are fortunate to have a husband that rose to the occasion for you. You’re right – Edwards and his $400 haircut doesn’t hold a candle.

About the 74-part vetting questionnaire. That validates a pattern with SP, where she seems to feel she’s entitled to avoid filling out pesky forms of all types, being vague, and missing deadlines. It would seem she feels insulted having to fill out personal information to anyone, as they should all take her word. In her world, it would seem she cannot figure out why anyone would question anything she says or puts out there. Questionnaires, income inquiries, birth certificates, ethics investigations, those are all for the “little people”. Even the RNC should have realized the Queen was above this fray.

I read that, and asked myself what on earth she thinks qualifies her to provide public relations expertise to the rest of us? I know the profession is often portrayed as little more than glad-handing, but as a person who provides graphic support to numerous public relations agencies I’m here to tell you that good PR professionals earn every penny–there is a great deal of training, strategizing, creativity, dedication, and sheer nerve that go into it.

And here we have a teenage high school graduate, with NO specialized training, and no real track record, trying to do something that responsible PR professionals take years to learn how to do. I just don’t know…

I’ve (obviously) not read all of the new book nor seen the 60 Minutes piece. That said, from what I have read (book exerpts posted) and seen (CBS ‘teases’), I think the ‘revelations’ about E and J Edwards (and even H Reid) are vital to the over-all creds of the book.

For sure, E was diagnosed with and has cancer, but that fact does not negate the (apparent) fact that she could be –and was– a real witch towards others. From what I’ve read and heard, the witchiness was already present before the diagnosis; the picture painted (for politics’ sake) conveniently omitted for years and years, that aspect of her personality. (We’ve seen similar ‘omissions’ of SPs personality for the sake of presenting the ‘ideal’ to the masses. We’ve also seen, among other things associated with SPs presence, ‘omissions’ of Todd’s intimate affiliation with AIP for similar reasons.)

J & E Edwards presented a finely-crafted picture to the public…SP did, too. Come to find out, neither picture was the real picture. Folks who were (are) fans of Edwards (both E & J) are going to be crushed by what is being printed, but that does not mean that what is (now) being revealed (about both J & E) isn’t true. We, here on Mudflats, have known for ages who the real SP is; the book just confirms it. I’m sure there are those who have known for ages who the real Elizabeth (and John) Edwards are, too; the book just ‘reveals’ it to the rest of us.

Since we (‘flatters) know how devious SP is, how polar-opposite her ‘public’ face is from her ‘real’ face, and how skewed the view the masses therefore have of her, is, the inclusion in the book of the other candidate’s/handler’s/message’s blunders, missteps, and faux pas, tends to make me accept those ‘revelations’ as equally valid. To my way of thinking, since the book does ‘reveal’ the not-so-pretty underbelly of SP [the 'underbelly' us 'flatters have come to know and love], it makes the ‘revelations’ about E & J Edwards, of HRC, of Reid, etc., that much stronger, that much more credible.

Of course, all the ‘spin machines’ will be going into double overtime in the next few weeks, but unless there is concrete evidence to the contrary, I’m going to have to give serious weight to what’s being exposed in the book about the whole ruddy lot of them… (No, Meg, sorry; your feeble attempt at spin with: “the reporters weren’t there, she [SP] was,” just ain’t gonna cut it.) beth.

    beth@55, appreciate your thoughtful comments.

I’ve been meaning to mention this book for a long time, so before I forget again, it’s called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” by (now Dr. ) Neil Postman.

It was published just before 1984 and the preface alone is enough for us to have many days of spirited and intelligent discussions. His premise is that Huxley’s “Brave New World” was basically a more likely scenario than what everyone else was worried about, Orwell’s “1984″.

And drats, I can’t find my copy of the dang thing to quote, but it addresses perfectly the problems of trying to have intelligent discourse in the ‘media age’. At the time he wrote it, the internet was but an infant, not yet a player in his analysis. His main target was TV, but everything he posits is perfectly applicable to the new internet technology, dissemination of information, and, of course, the importance of the entertainment factor.

You (beth) reminded me of this book with your comment that E & J Edwards “presented a finely-crafted picture to the public”. That is apparently what not just politicians are supposed to do these days, but also religious figures and teachers, among others. Postman’s overall premise is that we as a society will not tolerate anything anymore if it is not entertaining, and the ramifications that has. The finely-crafted picture is paramount – the reality? Not so much.

Yes. It is a sad state of affairs. I wish people could just be people, warts and all, and get elected to public office. If that were true, we’d have what the Tea Baggers keep claiming they want – “regular people” elected to their state legislatures, to the fed. house and senate, to the U.S. presidency.

But as long as they keep insisting candidates must be perfect (however you define that), that ain’t never gonna happen. Image will continue to trump substance. Money will be the only thing that can ensure that that image can be created, upheld, and disseminated widely enough. Candidates of every stripe will continue to lie because we have created a system in which if they do not lie, they will not be elected. (And yet we then get mad at them when they break campaign promises).

Again, although an older book, “Amusing Ourselves to Death” (Neil Postman) is a really interesting read and puts so much of what is going on here into sharp focus.

Also, it’s only about three-quarters of an inch thick in paperback, however many pages that might be.

I’ll go look s’more, see if I can find it …

I was gripped by that article in New York Mag about J&E Edwards. I was a supporter at one time. As word trickled in about him, I changed my opinion, obviously, and an article in the NY Times a few months back braced me for the blowback that was likely yet to come.

What was satisfying about the New York Mag article, for me, was an affirmation about a feeling I’d always had about Elizabeth Edwards. Everyone just raved about her, and we all felt (and feel) compassion for her. But I never took to her. I found her impossible to listen to in interviews. I guess, in retrospect, I never paid much attention to Edwards in interviews. He disappointed me greatly in his debate against Cheney. I liked his stump speech; I believed he was sincere; I felt he was charismatic enough for people to want to support him. It all goes to show how easy it is to say, “That’s my man–or woman,” and just tune out. It gave me more understanding of how easy it really is to be fooled by spin/public persona. Up till now, I just couldn’t see how the Palinbots could be so dumb. But apparently, so was I! For a little while at least.

What the Edwards were willing to risk is just unforgivable to me. If they’d had their way, McCain and Palin would have been elected, and McCain would surely be dead from the incredible pressure. Yikes. Commenters on NY Mag felt that EE should not have to die with such truths being expressed, but I disagree. She did her country a huge disservice. Neither of them deserve protection from the press, and they never did.

The 60 Minutes interviews tonight may not be totally groundbreaking with what they expose. You have to assume the juicy tidbits are already out there as teasers, such as what Rachel covered. It could be the ‘ response ‘ to these reports that make the News after they air. With ‘ S & M ‘ at the helm and their divine wisdom when it comes to making ‘ statements ‘ to the Media… Will we get an another ” Iconic Image ” press statement? That one was historical.

It does show a trend though. The tide may be turning. She is now relying solely on her FaceBook and just a few Conservative ‘ Fan Blogs ‘ as a means of positive spin. THAT is also changing. Remember Dan Riehl just a few months ago that with his blog went after Gryphen..? ( with Van Fleins help )
Dan Riehl was solidly behind Granny… now.. not so much.

Check the previous post up late last night over on Palingates. He seems to be in an ongoing battle with that ” Beg-A-thon blog “. He is calling them all kinds of names and the responses from Them are coming back as well.
Their ‘ Happy Marriage ‘ from a few months ago seems to have evolved into a bitter Divorce. Looks like he has dis-owned them. He supports CPAC, while her Fan Site is blindly behind Granny and her decision to di$$ them.
Just one more of those ‘ conservative’ blogs who are no longer in her corner.
People are jumping off the ship she is steering….they see rocky shoals or an iceberg in that path. Granny’s ship is slowing taking on water.

Make sure you read the Palingates quotes from Riehl inside that thread. There is an internal War going on within her Fanbase and it is getting nasty and ugly.

As with wall street – in last 20+ years the banking industry has been de-regulated to the point there is virtually no oversite. They basically control the “cash flow” of a business and can easily destroy main street by limiting or denying operating cash.

Although this is now coming to light, it has happened to other types of businesses in the last 30+ years. I remember when land prices soared in the late 70′s early 80′s. The banks were practically begging farmers to take on new debt for equipment / expansion etc. Then a couple yrs down the road the farmers had to sell out to big corporate farms because the banks refused to renew operating loans, and they were under water on their debt.

Even in my community – houses are underwater because ppl bought houses without down payments, financed all (most) of the closing costs, and looked at buying a house as an “investment” (not as a place they were going to live for years) also many first time buyers had to move to higher priced houses because virtually nothing was avail. in the $75-125K price range.

I don’t know who said “who controls the purse – controls the country” (world) – without regulation & oversight…… they are doing it.

If you have just way toooooo much time on your hands and want to go back in the Wayback Machine to June 2009 you can compare her Facebook Notes.Look at the ‘ style ‘ of writing Before… then and guess Who is writing those for her after that date.
Patrick at PG posted this little nugget in their current thread about an hour ago. This is just a small portion and I deleted their name-it is the ‘ Fan blog’
    ———————-
( Quotes he found on another Site )
“The so-called “adults” at ( Her Sea of Fans blog ) left in June 2009, after a sojourn in Alaska where they had a tete-a-tete with Palin.

“Hear Hear! The old ( Fan blog ) veterans met with Sarah Palin in June 2009! These were most likely Rebecca Mansour (RAM), Tim Lindell and Joseph Russo, who then disappeared from the list of ( Fan blog ) contributors on the website. This information is further proof for what many have thought for a long time: That Sarah Palin’s facebook posts are most likely written by Rebecca Mansour, Tim Lindell and Joseph Russo. ”

I don’t believe that. I know too many conservatives who voted against sarah, especially older ones. Two things that really struck me from the 60 Minutes interview:

    1. The “God’s plan” comment…that should have started all sorts of warning bells and whistles going off at decibel levels loud enough to be heard three states over.

    2. The fact that Schmidt as much as admitted that she was picked ONLY for the sake of political benefit, regardless of the potential danger it could have meant for the country. I liked how Anderson Cooper pushed him on the do-over non-answer…basically saying that Schmidt’s refusal to enthusiastically say he’d pick her again was as good as admitting he wouldn’t. Still, the lack of vetting was unconscionable as was the the fact that they didn’t pull the plug about 10 minutes after they started working with her. ‘Country first’ my @ss!

Otherwise, not too much that hasn’t already been seen in clips and news reports.

I agree with GA Peach @ 180 – in an obvious effort to pander to the so called “base” McCain proved he would sell his soul for office. Likewise Palin showed by resigning in July that she would sell her soul for money. She has a million pals on facebook? Wow, 0.0033% of the population is totally deluded. What is truly disturbing is that the election was not even more lopsided.

I have been trying to followup on some of the Pebble Mine discussion but it is tough sledding. Lots of PDFs to wade through. One thing that is notable though is that the reporting of things seems to have cooled down considerably in the past year. For instance, nothing is posted yet for 2009 in terms of filings for permitting purposes or Technical Working Group minutes.

The way to either stop the mine or improve it to the point of viability is to challenge every shortcut and profit enhancing aspect of the development plan. The only way to do this is to ride tight herd on the DNR and make sure they are doing their jobs.

I did note that there was a recent $7 million earmark to improve road that will aid the mining operation. Perhaps an Alaskan congress person would be willing to create an earmark of a similar amount to fund citizen advocacy to assure that the mine is either developed responsibly or not at all.

Have to run, I will try to come back later.

austintx @ 172 – The Jets used to share Shea Stadium with the Mets and have training camp at Hofstra University (my alma mater…yayy!) on Long Island. They started playing at Giants Stadium in NJ back in the 80s and they now seem to be holding camp in several locations including Hofstra, NJ and Cortland, NY.

Back in the 90′s, I used to help coordinate an NY-Ireland exchange program for young athletes with disabilities, and the Irish kids stayed in the dorms at Hofstra, often in the same buildings as the Jets rookies. I remember one day the elevator door opened in the lobby and I looked in to see a young Irish lad standing there, frozen, with eyes about ready to pop out of his head. He’d come from a tiny rural village in western Ireland and had never met anyone darker than his own milky white tone. On either side of him stood the largest African-American football players I’d ever seen. They very politely waited for him to get off the elevator, but he was so frightened that he couldn’t move, so they finally shrugged and got off, leaving him standing there. I was very sorry that I missed the tales of his encounter that he undoubtedly told when he returned home to Ireland!

The Other Sarah is hopelessly ignorant, willfully mendacious, and mentally unstable under pressure.

I wish they could have clarified what the AIP is, because I expect most viewers had no clue, but I guess the larger point that she lies is the take away.

A subtle, but I think telling, point that was made was her ignorance about what her soon to be deployed son would be fighting for. (Of course, she figured out later that what they are fighting for is to defend her from having to answer any real questions from any real reporters, but that must have been after the campaign ended.)

Just got done watching 60 Minutes.

A few things struck me: (1) I think the Republican Party is letting Mrs. Palin know that they do not consider her a viable candidate for them. Period.
    (2) The Republican Party is putting the Teabagger Party (as they first crowned themselves) on notice that they do not want their fringe elements in the Republican Party (and the Nation). As such, they are forcing Mrs. Palin to shut up (or be just a Republican fundraiser for them, not herself) or put up (and declare herself on the Teabagger Party slate or commit to the obvious that her PAC is just a fancy self-funding scheme).

    (3) It was very obvious there was much more to this interview. I do not believe we saw the “juciest” (spelling?) parts, only what was known and speaks loud and clear. It would be even more interesting to know what was said that was not broadcast (yet).

    (4) Mrs. Palin has been put on notice that there will be more to come if she continues her book tour appearance of gathering support to run as POTUS in 2012.

Since Mrs. Palin always refuses to “sit down and shut up”, or in this case learn, we can expect to see her to formally announce her candidacy and the formalization of the Teabagger Party. Bristol was very clear in her “look and words” in the Walters interview that Mrs. Palin thinks she can run for POTUS.

This will also force Rupert Murdoch to either fully support Mrs. Palin or to back off and come back into the Republican folds. I cannot believe that major industries (defense, automobile, what is left of steel, and even the health) would actually support a Teabagger Party and Mrs. Palin. In the end the Teabaggers do not like elite people and once they gain power, they will not like the true rich which control these industries and the exorbitant salaries the top executives receive.

The Republican Party is trying to save itself and in the process, just may save this Nation from the extremists who are trying to form and promote the Teabagger Party.

If she was getting food bars that had all the nutrients in them, she would have been covered on vitamins and minerals. If she was taking supplements in the form of pills, she would also be okay.

The more serious thing would be her anorexic or bulemic behavior. These would have been related to a more serious emotional problem. If she was bulemic, this would have accounted for her need for dental intervention. Also it could lead to serious heart problems from an imbalance in electrolytes.

@#224 Sandra in Oregon: As the *other* resident nutritionist (not a dietician, I’m a colonic therapist, herbalist, and so on), I must differ. Sarah’s nutritional needs would not be met by food bars. The vitamins & minerals in them (like the ones in most pills/capsules) are not nutrients, but laboratory artifacts that mimic the molecular structure of the real thing, which is found in nutritious food (greens, etc). If you remember your cellular anatomy, the ligands (cell receptors) on the membranes are extremely picky about what they’ll allow into a cell. Lab-created pseudo-nutrients don’t work; that’s why they’re excreted almost instantly & make the urine smell. Food bars are usually sugar, fiber, & very little else, nutritionally speaking. And all that diet Dr. Pepper and coffee makes a body extremely acidic, when it should be alkaline. Artificial vitamins, because the cells don’t admit them, end up in the lymphatic fluid, feeding bacteria, viruses, & parasites, which aren’t as picky as our cells. As for the anorexia/bulimia issue, right on. I thought she might be tweaking (taking amphetamines, which are plentiful in Wasilla) at the resignation speech (labored breathing, sweating profusely, shaky hands, thinning hair). Just one woman’s opinion.

Ref: Reid’s remark using the word “negro.”

There’s been discussion about the 2010 Census form being racist/offensive because that particular word is included as ONE terminology of (a choice for) a person’s race. The reasons for its inclusion, I think, are perfectly legit and understandable…and, apparently, supported by their [the Bureau's] extensive research into how some people ‘identify’ their race.
(See: The word ‘Negro’ on 2010 census form offends some blacks –
    http://www.thegrio.com/2010/01/the-word-negro-in-2010-census-form-offends-some-blacks.php )

While I admit to often being particularly ‘thin skinned’ when it comes to even the slightest hint of racism, bigotry, misogyny, or any other hurtful and ugly undertones in speech or action, (i.e. I’m constantly on the look out/aware of such junk creeping into any dialog of/with/from anyone) there are times when I just shake my head at ‘manufactured’ indignation. I seriously consider both the reaction to Reid’s remarks and to the Census form worthy of the ‘manufactured’ indignation designation. Context, context, context, to me, makes ALL the difference. Maybe that’s just me, though.

I’ve not read the book where the Reid ‘quote’ comes from, nor have I seen the exact quote; all I’ve been able to find [google-ing] are links to multiple pages saying Reid: “described [Obama] as a ‘light skinned’ African-American ‘with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one’ [but that Os race would help, rather than hurt, his run for POTUS.] And ya’ know what? For as irate as the GOP is over ‘the double standard’ and for as much as Michael Steele is calling for Reid to resign, I think that what Reid said is right on the mark. Although candidate Obama made a crackerjack speech addressing race relations in our nation, that did NOT make the issue, the big elephant in the middle of the room, go away. His racial makeup was –and still is!– a major issue for many. As I said, I’ve not seen the exact quote, but from the phrases I’ve seen and from what I’m understanding were the context in which Reid’s words were spoken, I do not believe Reid’s statement was in any way ‘racist.’ Again, maybe that’s just me… beth.

@232 zyxomma: Some long time ago, there was speculation here that Sarah Palin took some kind of medication. People noted how frequently she licked her lips. If you watch any video from her recent book signing, her actions are frantic, almost manic. She appears to run on boundless energy. Levi reported her state of depression after losing the election; the resignation speech seemed to be the opposite end of that dynamic, the manic side. Add medication, too much coffee, (how much caffeine is there in Dr. Pepper?), and poor eating, and I see Palin as a recipe for disaster.

I think that there was a telling remark in the interview, when Schmidt described Sarah changing into a different person, with glazed eyes. I think that it finally hit her that despite thinking that she had been “chosen” she wasn’t up to the demands being placed on her. How she dealt with that feeling of being overwhelmed is a guessing game right now. Maybe Schmidt has some more tidbits and some interviews coming up.

    Now for something COMPLETELY different…

With all the talk about Yemen in the news recently, the TV channels have all pulled up –and constantly show– some stock footage of ‘training camps’ there [not to be confused with the stock footage shown for years of the 'training camps' in AFG.]

I can’t help it: Every time I see the single line of rifle-toting ‘trainees’ breaking to the left, right, left, right, (all the way down the line), I just know Busby Berkeley is spinning in his grave. He was such a master at choreographing incredible routines that the video clip surely would give him heart failure (if he weren’t already dead, that is).

To my way of seeing it, the stock-footage ‘dancers’ might could do with a bit more practice of their timing; they come off as rather ‘stiff’ in the footage. They also seem eager enough to ‘show their stuff’, but a tad unsure of the exact choreography of the routine. Maybe if the lads were making their left, right, left, right, etc. breaks/lunges to music, their production would’ve come off as a bit more polished and professional? Oh, Poor Busby. beth.

Well well well…..guess where Mr. Country First is hanging out on the night that Steve Schmidt is dishing the dirt about the debacle of the GOP’s choice for VP in the 2008 election?

Yep….over in Israel. He and Lieberman had a press conference (aka tap-dancing and waving frantically to divert the public’s attention from Schmidt) to undermine our President while on foreign soil. They tried to look grave and important but all that I could see was the treasonous jerk who almost sold our country out by sliding an ignorant and mentally unstable candidate into the VP slot in 2008.

    From Andrew Sullivan’s post:

“The man who lost the last election reacts by directly undercutting the victor’s foreign policy goals, and does so abroad in the very country Obama is trying to push toward change.
Lieberman, for his part, is effectively telling the Israelis that Obama does not control US foreign policy with respect to Israel, and that he will be prevented by Congress from exerting any pressure.

    (snip)

Message to a foreign government: if the US president tries to pressure you in any way, we will stop him and back you. McCain endorses Netanyahu’s position entirely, ignoring the settlement issue, and boldly supports a foreign leader over his own president. For good measure, they also both back the Netanyahu government’s position on Iran, calling for massive, general crippling sanctions rather than more targeted measures against the Revolutionary Guards. This again is effectively backing Netanyahu against Obama.

Are you surprised? Me neither. As an Israeli reader writes:

I was under the impression that foreign policy was formed in the White House, not congress, and isn’t it a bit weird for two right-wingers to attack the US administration on foreign soil? Then again, It’s Israel.”

I remember in my old job as a casino pit manager,we had a meeting about promotions for those who had applied for them. One pretty young well dressed girl in particular, when her name was brought up,the other pit managers and I said “no way” because she did not have the skills for the position and did not make any effort to improve her skills, preferring to flirt and smile and hike her skirts up.Funny, but the other pit managers were men,and they felt the same as I did. The Casino manager was horrified!! “But she always looks so professional”"!!

Right then and there we learned why we had so many guys and girls who looked great in a suit, but had the knowledge, judgement, and integrity of a weasel.

Thats my take on Mrs O’Palin, too.

Super Bowl-style corporate ads for candidates? (AP)

AP – Possibly coming soon to your TV screen: election-season Super Bowl-style ads promoting congressional and presidential candidates, paid for by some of the nation’s largest corporations.

    ———————

Only one problem with this: violates federal law with respect to corporations doing so.

Here’s the URL for the DNR’s permitting site on Pebble Mine. At the bottom of the main page are 3 categories of available information. I am starting to look at the draft study plans for 2008. I am concentrating on chapters 4-8 since that is my area of expertise. There are also field reports that need to be looked at, I get the impression that DNR people are only at the mine site for a day or two at a time from the titles of these reports. Feel free to look at anything you have an interest in or experience with. Once again I think it is notable that NOTHING is posted there yet for any of 2009.

I am planning on concentrating on the permitting and mitigation plans for the containment dams and the mine waste slurries.

The SCOTUS is about to change all that and give corporations the same free speech rights as individuals.
