John McCain – Reckless, Irresponsible, and So Darn Proud.

Well, well, well… Somebody’s just a wee bit touchy, wouldn’t you say?

For anybody out there who still has a shred of respect for John McCain, I have a clip for you.

Matt Lauer talked to Senator McCain who just returned from an overseas trip. They talked about Harry Reid, in which McCain expressed his dumbfounded shock that words like that (Negro) are “still in the American lexicon,” and that the same kind of unfair pile-on happened when Trent Lott told us all how we’d be better off if segregationist Strom Thurmond had been elected president. Let’s see… A backhanded and politically incorrect compliment about the president from someone (that even McCain admits) is not a racist, vs. someone wishing a segregationist was in the White House because all our problems would have been solved. I believe that’s what they call “apples and oranges.” Both stupid statements, (fruit) yet completely different.

Then he went on to talk about Afghanistan and actually resurrected the old phrase we need to “have the courage to stay the course.” Even Bush booted “stay the course”  out of the political lexicon, long before he left office.

But here’s the real kicker. Of course, after Sunday’s nuking of Sarah Palin by McCain’s senior campaign advisor Steve Schmidt, and the release of the book “Game Change” about the 2008 presidential election, there were bound to be some questions. After all, we learned that McCain wanted to have Lieberman as his running mate, but that his party wouldn’t go for it. And we also learned that Palin was chosen because they were looking for The Battle of the Ovaries to mop up disenfranchised Clinton supporters,  and some lawyer literally Googled Republican women, and she came up. Then, they took the vetting process to a deeper level – YouTube.   Nobody came to Alaska, or talked to anyone up here. So, naturally there were going to be some questions.

Lauer: You’re kind of front and center in a lot of the chapters that seem to be a little inflammatory. So let me get you on the record on some of it. First of all, the vetting process for Governor Palin, before choosing her as your running mate was wholly inadequate. From page 363, (and I’m combining two quotes here) “In judging Palin, he was relying on vetting so hasty and haphazard it barely merited the name – No one had interviewed her husband, no one had spoken to her political enemies, no vetters had descended on Alaska.” Is it a fair assessment?

McCain: I wouldn’t know. The fact is that I’m proud of Sarah Palin, I’m proud of the campaign we waged. She energized our party, she will be a major factor in American politics in the future and I’m proud of our campaign. Look, I… I…just spent my time, Matt, over where three young Americans were just killed over in Afghanistan

Lauer: and I respect that.

McCain: …and that was over a year ago. And I’m not going to get into it.  I’m not going to get into it.

Lauer: But your comment … you just said, “I wouldn’t know,” is somewhat surprising to me. You were the presidential candidate.

McCain: I wouldn’t know what the sources are, nor care. I do know… I do know that I’m proud of my campaign, I’m proud of Sarah Palin, I’m proud of the job that we did, and I will always be grateful for having her as my running mate, and the support we got from millions of Americans.

OK? I am not going to spend time looking back over what happened over a year ago when we’ve got two wars to fight, 10% unemployment in my state, and things to do. I’m sorry, you’re going to have to get some others to comment on it.

Lauer: Well, others have commented on it…

McCain: That’s fine. They’re free to.

Lauer: I’m just curious, are you disappointed in Steve Schmidt, your campaign advisor for going on the record on television and saying some of the things he’s said?

McCain: I’m proud of everybody in my campaign, I’m proud of the campaign we ran, I’m so proud that I had the opportunity to represent my party in the election, and I’ll always look back on that period with pride and satisfaction. It’s tough, but I’m happy. And I’m very happy in my new role in the Senate and goin’ back and fightin’ the good fight.

For those of you keeping score, that’s NINE prouds and a pride. I believe that’s what they call a “talking point.” I bet his handlers will be very….. proud.

And it was twice that he admitted he didn’t know how his running mate was vetted.  And once that he said he didn’t “care to know.”  Really?   So, Republicans.  How are you feeling about the fact that your guy didn’t know and didn’t care how his running mate was selected?  Does it make you feel all safe and secure about the guy you voted to run your country?

I’m sorry.  That was mean. (Pats you on the shoulder)  It wasn’t your fault.  You couldn’t actually believe us up here in Alaska when we were shouting from the rooftops that Palin was not qualified, that she knew nothing, was not vetted and that John McCain was reckless and irresponsible to the highest possible degree.  It seemed just too awful to believe.  And it looks like he still will not admit that he might have been wrong.  Instead, he’s willfully ignorant, chose to be willfully ignorant and is proud of his willful ignorance.  Well, I hate to say this but….. (quickly clamping my hand over my mouth to resist from saying “Told ya so!!!”)

Nevermind.

I mean…all that was ancient history.  More than a whole YEAR ago!

“What was McCain thinking???” You had it right back then, AKM – he wasn’t thinking! If he’s so proud of his campaign, does that mean he’s proud he lost? Doesn’t sound like he had a very good handle on things, does it?

That’s our John, just doin’ it his way.

The jeopardy he put us in with that pick is hard to get your head around. With what we now know about Palin it is down right terrifying. I don’t care if it was shoddy staff work, a crass attempt to woo disgruntled Clinton supporters, a need for a game changer, or a bunch of guys who thought she was cute, John McCain will forever be remembered for that decision. The guy has anger management issues and winky’s just a birdbrain, I can’t imagine what life would be like if they had been in charge for the last year. It would probably be like road warriors & we’d all be driving old American beaters in pursuit of fuel & probably water too….

It appears that Palin fans are trying to discourage people from buying “Game Change” by writing negative comments on Amazon’s review–mainly that the book is not available on Kindle yet (holy cow, not that!). I ordered my copy yesterday (it’ll be an entertaining read to say the least). Palin’s fans, including her Fox friends are going to do everything they can to discredit the author’s claims and drive down sales. Of course, Daddy Murdoch won’t like that one little bit since his company published the darn thing. Then again, if they say that the Palin stuff is nonsense then how can they use information in the book about Reid to bash him? Oh, it’s so complicated!!!!!

The authors are very believable in their interviews and, if the Reid controversy says anything, they did uncover a lot of hidden gems about the campaign (some we may not be so happy to read others, like the Palin revelations are gold).

Though Steve Schmidt’s statements are probably largely accurate, let’s remember he is a professional political adviser who wants to keep working, so he is not going to admit anything that makes it look like he goofed on choosing or vetting Palin.
Either she was well vetted and either Schmidt recommended her or didn’t say no about her candidacy, or she was not well vetted and Schmidt either did not did not recommend her. Either way he looks bad on a professional level.
So, he washes his hands of her vetting. And McCain admits that he was out to lunch about her vetting.
They both look like losers, but not nearly as bad as they would if they had acknowledged that they were on top of Palin’s background, and qualifications and chose her anyway.

Wow. More proof that all McCain has is his connections to the military. He’s asked about Palin and tries to divert attention to his recent trip.

I never have trusted this fraud, and when he picked Palin and I started finding out what any of the Republicans could have found on the internet (like the rest of us did), it sealed the deal for me. trisha@73, “He is pandering to Palin and her fans because he doesn’t want her rabid fans attacking his reelection plans.”

Right, but too little too late. There’s a Tea Bag candidate running, and when they have a choice, the rabid right goes as far right as they possibly can. McCain had plenty of criticism about not being right enough during the Pres. election. The fact is the Repub party had to put up a candidate that was moderate enough to win against the likely very strong Democratic candidate. They somehow felt John McCain was that man, a sentiment I might have agreed with 8 or even 4 years earlier.

But then, he changed. He got ‘less mavericky’. He started to tow Bush party lines. His campaign was doomed from the start – don’t be Conservative enough, we won’t vote for you. But be too conservative, and we won’t vote for you.

I remember some interview with both Palin and McCain during the campaign where abortion rights was mentioned. I sat there gobsmacked while Sarah Palin deflected (deftly) the issue onto it being one of ’state’s rights’. I knew right then that was the talking point she had gotten from the campaign (and she actually took their advice!). We all know exactly ho she feels on the subject. So that was, well, her lying, even if under duress. But more important, that just showed the sad sate of politics – people cannot claim to either be for or against abortion on principal in case it will alienate potential voters. “State’s right’s” is code word for ‘I can’t tell you how I really feel about an issue for fear of losing your vote, so I am going to at best dissemble and at worst lie so that you will vote for me.”

My personal feeling is that John McCain has no moral problems with retaining the Row v. Wade ruling. Sarah Palin? Hard to say. She’s made so much cachet if not now cash for her pro-life stance.

But if McCain and Palin had such a fundamental disagreement about policy …

    connect the dots.

Stinks, but that’s the way politics is, perhaps has always been.

Paddy Power, a much loved and respected bookie here in Ireland wonders how long Mrs. Palin will last at Fox.

Is Sarah Palin in for the long haul at Fox News? At least one oddsmaker says no.

Shortly after her hiring was announced Monday, Irish betting site paddypower.com set the line at 8-to-1 that Palin will leave or lose her new commentary gig before Sept. 1. The odds are 10-to-1 that she’ll be out between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, and 11-to-10 that her departure will come after Jan. 1.

“She has a bit of a history of not seeing things out too much,” owner/operator Paddy Power said in a phone interview from his company’s Dublin headquarters. “She might just walk away.

“We also think there’s every chance with her recent history with the (2008 presidential) campaign, she might just put her size 10s in it, get up somebody’s nose and be forced to step away.”

After capture he divulged classified secrets to the enemy in order to receive preferential medical treatment – and no, he was not tortured before doing so as he claims. They just didn’t treat his injuries right away, so maybe that’s a human rights violation, but not active torture. They tortured him later when he didn’t have more to give them.

I did not watch O’Reilly either but read a little about the interview on Politico. She said that she didn’t watch the “60 Minutes” story because she was told it was “Bull”. She also said that the accounts about her in “Game Change” were not true. So how is it that she has seized on the Reid comments as reported in the same book as true? (She’s also using one of her new words again: “perplexing”.)

    From Politico:

“Palin said she was not worried by what Schmidt or the reporters said on the program because “the American people are immediately neutralizing programs like ‘60 Minutes.’”

But while Palin had issues with her depiction, she had no problem seizing on quotes within the book from Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) who credited President Barack Obama’s attractiveness as a candidate to his lighter skin color and lack of a “Negro dialect.”

“You can’t defend those comments,” she said. “His thinking and articulation of that thought are quite perplexing.””

McCain and the Vetting to Nowhere

Lack of vetting? It’s what Alaskans- of all political stripes knew when McCain pick her.

In  August 29, 2008 stories, the Anchorage Daily News reported that “McCain’s choice seemed to stun the country and took Alaska completely by surprise.”

Quoting the REPUBLICAN leadership of the Alaska Legislature (who like other members of Alaska’s political and business leadership were never contacted by the McCain campaign prior to Palin’s selection), the story said:

“Republican House Speaker John Harris didn’t much want to discuss Palin’s qualifications for the nation’s second-highest office.

    ‘She’s old enough,” Harris said. “She’s a U.S. citizen.’”

In a related story, the ADN reported:  “State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to give her the news.

“She’s not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?” said Green, a Republican from Palin’s hometown of Wasilla. “Look at what she’s done to this state. What would she do to the nation?”

Green, who has feuded with Palin repeatedly over the past two years, brought up the big oil tax increase Palin pushed through last year. She also pointed to the award of a $500 million state subsidy to a Canadian firm to pursue a natural gas pipeline that is far from guaranteed.

Democrats helped give Palin her victories on oil taxes and the natural gas pipeline deal, over the opposition of many of Palin’s fellow Republicans in the Legislature.

But Anchorage Democratic state Sen. Hollis French said it’s a huge mistake by McCain and “reflects very, very badly on his judgment.” French said Palin’s experience running the state for less than two years hasn’t prepared her for this.”
    **************************************************************
Former House Speaker Gail Phillips, a Republican political leader who has clashed with Palin in the past, was shocked when she heard the news Friday morning with her husband, Walt.

“I said to Walt, ‘This can’t be happening, because his advance team didn’t come to Alaska to check her out,” Phillips said.

Phillips has been active in the Ted Stevens re-election steering committee and remains in close touch with Sen. Lisa Murkowski and other party leaders, and she said nobody had heard anything about McCain’s people doing research on his prospective running mate.

“We’re not a very big state. People I talk to would have heard something.”
Few wanted to talk about anything else on talk radio Friday. Conservative host Rick Rydell said there are some benefits to the state, but it’s a gamble for McCain to pick an unknown with what he considered “questionable vetting.”

“It seems almost like a Hail Mary pass at the end of a football game,” Rydell said in an interview after his show Friday.

Rydell said McCain has destroyed his argument about Barack Obama’s lack of experience.”

And then to make matters worse, and to keep the lid on the lack of vetting and Palin’s lies about “open and transparent” government, McCain and Palin brought out of state goons- like Ed O’Callaghan from New York City- to run state government and thwart ethics investigations like Troopergate- to hide Palin scandals from the American public, and to cover up McCain’s lack of proper vetting.

McCain wouldn’t know?  That’s because there is nothing to know about the vetting to nowhere.  And he knows it.

This selection process is to determine the running mate for a 72 year old presidential candidate with a 4-time history of cancer and an explosive temper that likely resulted in hypertension.

Option 2 – The campaign did a quiet and extremely secretive but thorough job of vetting and were fully aware that they were putting a mentally unstable, vindictive, uneducated diva with an incomprehensibly poor knowledge of economics, world history, geography, political science and just about every other topic studied in an educational institution, in a position which would likely result in someday having her dainty little finger on the magic red button of the nuclear football. #189 Sudsy, I don’t think even faux is foolish enough to replace billo with winky. He’s a pompous *ss but she’s an unreliable birdbrain. I think it’s more of her MO to be going after greta’s time slot anyway. You know throw someone under the bus that you used to get ahead. Besides, no matter how much plastic surgery poor greta gets she’ll never live up to the superficial bar faux holds for any female in their line up.

I believe O’Reilly is an educated man…makes you wonder why he seems so enamored with Palin and why he seems to believe she would be great as President of the United States. He thinks that she’d be a wonderful President, understanding complicated policy issues, being the boss of the armed services, being the boss of the Secretary of the Treasury…etc. If she could handle all of that, then he must believe that she would make an excellent boss. I wonder how he would take the news that she will now be his boss…running Fox News, understanding budgets, leading the corporation and, come contract signing time, telling him what is or is not acceptable. Since running a corporation is not as complex as being the leader of the free world, I’m sure he won’t have a problem calling her boss.

Wow, that interview on FOX was her big debut? Ha, she studied up for that like she studied up for Sadamm, Iraq, 9/11 facts…zip.
I don’t think she really was planning on starting so soon, then the 60 Minutes piece came out and she had to scramble. She did herself more harm than good, she answered with lies and alibis and called 60 minutes “crap that the American people are instantly neutralizing.” Really??!! …”and they are turning to FOX NEWS for the truth.” barf
She hasn’t got one new statement that she hasn’t used to death for a year already.
What the hell does she do with her time? Count her money I guess. She sure hasn’t perfected any new slants that show she is getting up to snuff on current affairs, or how to answer a question without automatically calling everyone else a liar…while she lies!
It looks again like BillO is giving her all the rope she needs to hang herself, he left her hanging on a few answers, just let her dig her hole deeper. I don’t think he believes the hype around her, but tries to pretend he is on board…probably to fool his masters and Sarah’s gang.
Scarah ogled and gazed and made eyes at BillO, using some of that – gag – charm she wields so obviously. Even Bill isn’t fool enough to swallow that bit…but she thinks she has him in the palm of her hand.
The way she dismisses Obama and tries to belittle him and cement herself to “the real Americans which are ALL on her side”….bleche…makes her look so Jr. High. Mean Girl With Bumpit Contract now on FOX.
Her classy use of “crap” and “BS” locks her into the uneducated dumbed-down crowd, a sure fire winner –NOT. Like others have said here, you sure don’t get the idea that she is a fine Christian woman at all.
If she does Glenn Beck tonight, she’ll have to back-track on her failed performance on her great debut and clean up some of her major gaffs. I’m not counting on a successful 2nd outing, she is her own worst enemy…thank goodness.

When she was picked I was worried that they were trying for the disappointed Hilary supporters. Then I realized there was nothing to worry about. Those women would be too smart to fall for this stupid attempt to coopt them.

Every time I come to mudflats I thank my stars that I stumbled onto the site while researching setting up a blog! There were those boots front and center and I have never looked back! Saved my sanity during the election and still does.

The high of slimy immoral irresponsible politicing – to continue with Pallin once he saw who she was and that nothing in her repetoire had any solid background, education, intelligent viewpoint based on study thoughtfulness or even being concerned about possibly knowing something or curiosity about the world, history, etc.etc. For a guy who tries to give the idea that he is Mr. Moral, he is self-righteous a-hole, pompous. And now he accuses Obama? Like all the rest of these incredibly cynical power-seeking devices. Could you just go away?

Only one word pops into my mind as I listen to McCain say things like “I don’t know” and “I don’t care” and “I’m proud of Sarah Palin and my campaign”: Weenie!

Loreen Wells said “Is anyone else besides me bothered by the wildly inappropriate affect McCain shows whenever he talks about Sarah or his picking her? He just plasters this big stupid grin on his face and goes on about how great and wonderful she is. ”

He may have been smiling when his campaign started–now I suspect he’s grinding his teeth.

iT is telling that he said “the campaign we waged”. Not only was his campaign rife with dirty blows but the has war on the brain. He even attempts to change the subject by referring to wounded soldiers, as in:: Hey I was a POW, remember!!!

Just want to add, McCain is fairly savvy, politically speaking. Granted he is a tired old man, so we can opine that he was just out of touch for the whole VP thing with Palin. I believe him when he says he didnt care, however. My guess is he didn’t really want to win and neither did the RNC, so they allowed his campaign to sabotage itself with her. They are reaping plenty of benefit from both having a democrat in the white house now and by having this woman rally the most ignorant of their supporters.
