Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

McCain and Palin… Together Again.

After the 2008 presidential race, where he impressed the country and earned our trust with his measured and thoughtful decision-making ability and stellar judgment in choosing a running mate, he’s ready to go back to D.C. for another six years.

Yes, I’m talking about John McCain, and yes my tongue is firmly in cheek.

But, you gotta hand him this. When something works he sticks with it. The one and only half-term ex-governor from Alaska will be joining him on the stump!

May it be just as successful for the Senator as it was last time.

McCain may face a primary challenge from J.D. Hayworth, an ex-state representative and current radio talking head who talks tough on immigration. If the challenge looks serious, the Dems may decide to run a serious candidate. But they’re going to just wait and see. Because that’s the kind of thing that really gets people fired up and ready to work really hard to elect them.

    McCain does own a house in Arizona but really doesn’t spend too much time in the state, neither does his wife (and neither of them spend a whole lot of time with each other). If he is not reelected, I doubt seriously if he will spend any more time in Arizona than he already does. He only moved there to take advantage of an open senate race years ago…he has no real love for the State or its citizens.

    The people of Arizona need to wake up and elect someone who will really take their interests to heart. My sister and mother recently moved to Phoenix and I can assure you that two new votes will not go to him.

    In a way, he and Palin were made for each other. They care only about what’s good for themselves at the expense of everything that they say they hold dear.

    Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The Senate won’t take further action to pass a final health care bill before Senator-Elect Scott Brown (R-Mass.) takes his seat, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Wednesday.

    “We’re not going to rush into anything,” Reid said at a press conference following the Senate’s weekly caucus lunches. “We’re going to wait until the new senator arrives before we do anything more on health care.”

    Across the Capitol, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told reporters Tuesday that Congress could pass health care in the roughly two weeks before Brown is seated and Democrats lose their filibuster-proof supermajority in the Senate. But that time will mostly be spent focusing on job growth, Reid said.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is telling Democrats not to “jam” a health care overhaul bill through Congress, instead urging them to coalesce around popular parts of the bill.
    In an interview with ABC News, Obama said Wednesday that Congress must wait for newly elected Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown to be sworn into office before lawmakers move forward.
    Good grief. How embarrassing is this for these girls? Although the one who got voted off of American Idol didn’t look like she was minding the spotlight all that much tonight. That said, I would guess Brown was right that he would be in trouble when he got home.
    And now onto more serious matters like how much is this flame thrower going to make the Senate an even more screwed up institution that it is already?
    If nothing else I’m sure he’ll be providing us with sound bytes similar to the likes of McCain, Graham, DeMint, McConnell and LIE-berman.
    Or worse yet his House counterparts like Hoekstra, Boehner, Issa, Bachmann and others.
    So much for that Senate civility they’re always praising.
    It’s really a shame that the two McCain woman are true to their convictions while John McCain has sold out any principles that he might once have had in order to remain in his powerful position in Washington.
    Having Palin on his presidential ticket was a dangerous and deceptive calculation that could have been catastrophic had they won the election. Since then, McCain has continually defended Palin against claims of her obvious incompetence in order to keep her on his side in case he needed her star power in the future. But by defending Palin, he showed his true weakness and selfishness. He knew that he might need Palin’s conservative followers so he did not take the true high road by being honest with the American people about Palin’s ineptitude. He also showed a tremendous lack of integrity by not defending people like Schmidt and Wallace against Palin’s slanderous claims.
    Hero? I don’t think so. McCain has shown in the last year that through his dishonest and cynical association with Sarah Palin he is more of a selfish coward than hero.
    re: Martha @ 11 ~ some thoughts on the quotes/cites:
    I’ve no earthly idea what wheeling and dealing has transpired in DC, but I’m guessing that ‘waiting for Brown to be seated’ won’t make any difference because:
    1) the votes have already been rounded up to pass the piece of once-great legislation, and/or
    2) POTUS has “something” up his sleeve and having the full body of legislators ‘in on’ the deliberations of the legislation/voting on it will be advantageous to that “something.”
    Please let that “something” be: POTUS saying in the State of the Union address:
    “The members of the Senate and House of Representatives have had nearly a year to examine all parts of our health care system. In that time, they ALL — every . single . one . of . them — have let the interests of the few, the interests of the lobbyists, the interest of the big insurance companies, and/or well-orchestrated distortions and lies, distract them from what is in the best interest of ALL the citizens of our nation.
    The mental and physical health and well-being of every single citizen is vital to our recovery from the current economic hardships, to our economic growth, to our national security, and to the continuance of our democracy as laid out over two-hundred years ago in our Constitution.
    When I directed there be a comprehensive overhaul of our health care system, I did NOT direct our legislators to look, first and foremost, at their campaign war chests, at what perks they could get from which industry and/or special interest group, or any thing else that would be personally beneficial to them. I directed that the health care overhaul be FOR the American people. Legislators on both sides of the aisle have failed in that task. Cancer knows no political affiliation; a broken bone knows no political affiliation; nor does diabetes, influenza, bi-polarism, pneumonia, neuralgia, pregnancy, or any other medical condition know a political affiliation. All, though, have been visited upon –and are being visited upon– citizens of our nation. For the representatives of our nation’s peoples to ignore that immutable fact and try to present the American people with a half-a$$ed “overhaul” of the system, is unconscionable.
    For that reason, I am directing, tonight, that ALL members of both the House and Senate begin tomorrow –from scratch– to intelligently, seriously, and in a cooperative manner, overhaul our nation’s medical care and delivery system FOR the American people. You, legislators, have had your fun wheeling and dealing for personal advantages in this overhaul, but that stops now; tommorrow is Day One for a comprehensive overhaul of our nations’ health care system.
    All of you legislators have had a full year to study the ins and outs of our current system and a full year to reflect on what is needed to provide the best possible medical care for ALL citizens. I will NOT sign ANY bill even remotely resembling the piece of hackery you are now trying to foist on the American people. As President of ALL Americans, I would be failing in my duty, if I did. The American people expect more of you than the partisan bickering and special interest cave-ins witnessed this past year; as your President, I do, too. When it comes to a comprehensive overhaul of our health care system for ALL our citizens, I demand more.
    I expect a bi-partisan Citizen-centered, Citizen-friendly, Citizen-first, health care proposal to be completed by 20 March 2010 and the full bill on my desk, ready for my signature, by 15 May 2010.”
    From my most ardent hopes to [the Diety of your Choice's] ears…
A few months ago, he criticized Obama for a new Naval defense plan which would have the Navy deploy more SM3 missiles in place of newer, more expensive, and less thoroughly tested missiles. McCain’s criticism was that the SM3 was an unproven weapon and might even be considered experimental. The Facts are that the SM in SM3 stands for Standard Missile, and that the Navy has already had them deployed for some time on missile cruisers – including the USS John McCain. Oh, my fellow prisoners – it’s shaping up to be a long summer.
    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/01/20/brown-brushes-off-presidential-question/?eref=marqueeflipper
    I can just hear the buzz in conservative circles in about a year:
    “Brown is just dreamy…he should be president.”
    “I know…he has the look…as Peggy Noonan said last year, he looks like an American.”
    What ever happened to that Alaska woman, you know the one who quit?”
    “You mean the one in the running shorts?”
    “Yeah that’s the one.”
    “I heard that she lost her Fox contract in only a few months because she proved to be a high maitenance idiot and the tabloids wouldn’t even cover her anymore because she stories about her just didn’t sell anymore.”
    These two are symbiotic. She’s latching on to him because he has the “machine” behind him to protect her. She HAS to know that things are coming down the Yukon, as it were. He might not be so privy to this sort of thing. BUT, he’ll use her for press. She does garner lots of attention, and you know what they say, bad press is still press. As long as she doesn’t crash and burn whilst on the trail with him, he’ll be fine. It’s in his best interest to make her look innocent and pure. It’s in her best interest to let him. BUT, if his machine can’t protect her, he’s toast right along with her.
    I posted this satire yesterday, and it was not put up. Not sure why. It’s pretty funny though (as well as informative, with links). it was on Palin, and a Volcano that has been spewing out exhaust
    Obviously relevant to Volcanoes, but more relevant to McCain and his self described “soulmate” Sarah Palin (I’d put in a link to the Jan 14 Daily show for Palin’s new soulmate — its great stuff, but then maybe too many links? def worth finding. So, as noted, the real scoop on this stuff:
    “”"”If that is not proof that climate change is due to natural causes, I don’t now what is. God, just like he created that energy right here underfoot in America, is showing us how powerful Volcanoes are. Volcanoes can change climate, right? Scientists tell us — actual scientists, not the kind you read just before preparing for a Debate with O’Biden — tell us that volcanoes spew out aerosols that block sunlight and affect climate.
    Who are we to disagree with volcanoes? So it is very clear that while the media “would rather focus on the personality-driven political gossip of the day,” America needs this energy that we all crave and get nourishment from.
    Sure we have to move off of fossil fuels; but the way to do that is not to make and produce less of them! So it’s clear that climate change — as this beautiful Volcano clearly shows us — is due to natural, cyclical, environmental trends. If you don’t believe me, just ask the Washington Post.
    That Volcano, by the way, is also a super Volcano. Not only can it affect climate, but from where that Volcano sits, it can even see Russia. Which makes it a national security expert Volcano as well. And who are we to argue with a national security expert Volcano on climate change?
    Clearly we need to do something about this changing climate that we all recognize and acknowledge (see afore-going link), as we see the effects first hand right here in Alaska.
    But the thing to do is certainly NOT take any action to actually arrest the causes of this climate change (like this Volcano for instance), but wait half a century because simply taking all the “bad stuff” from the atmosphere is gonna be so cheap, just like really fast computer speed!
    If you don’t believe me, someone who, according to the Washington Post editorial pages, is clearly an expert on these issues, and who served as Chairperson of the Alaska Oil and Gas Commission before I quit (which was before I quit as Governor, so it is very clear that climate change is real and that we need to produce more oil to grow the American economy so we can solve these “natural, cyclical, environmental trends”), just ask this University of Chicago Professor and award winning author, as well — the answer to this climate change dilemma is not to work to arrest fossil fuel usage now, but letting the magic of computing speed — Moore’s law — one day work for us. Just like that wonderful energy underfoot, that God gave us, is doing for us now. Along, of course, with the Washington Post, and its crack staff of climate, energy and science experts. And this wonderful volcano that shows us that climate change is so natural and God given. “”"”
    John, you really sure your soulmate knows what she is talking about on this stuff?
    Rather than blame George Soros, I would think the fault would lie more with the repeal of the glass wall between Banking and investment banking that Glass Steagull properly put up with respect to federally insured and guaranteed funds. But then, the person who was a huge advocate for that removal served as McCain’s top economics advisor for a while in 2008, so whaddy know. Doubtful Hayworth will change his tune from blaming the economic collapse on Chuck Schumer and Soros, though.
    Another amazing feat was the fact that his approval rating globally has improved the country’s image around the world. A recent gallup poll showed that the US enjoys at 40% increase in positive sentiment from European countries and the majority of Arab nations have improved impressions of the US as well. That is essential for the security of the country and its citizens and is no small feat, especially having been accomplished in a startling short time.     Bea @ 53, jojobo1 @ 71, the problem child @ 77, and seattlefan @ 80 ~ thank you, collectively, for the ‘nudge’.
    I got to thinking (always a dangerous proposition) and figured: Why not? Why shouldn’t I send my ‘suggestion’ [@ 29] on to the WH?
    So I did.
    Unfortunately, electronic communications to the WH –leastwise those channels available to Joe and Jane Doe– is limited to 2,500 characters; I ended up having to send it to POTUS via snail mail.
    The State of the Union will be on the 27th, but in light of the below info from Speaker Pelosi, there’ll be plenty of time for POTUS to take the yahoo legislators to task for failing -epically!- the citizens of this nation on health care. I do hope, though, my missive gets to POTUS in time for him to seriously consider including it in the S of the U.
    I know he’s got a tremendous load on his shoulders, what with trying to get grown men and women to act as thinking adults for the benefit of citizens, and all, and with trying to clean up the mess he inherited from The W. I wouldn’t trade places with him for all the tea in China…and India…and Sri Lanka…and any other tea-producing place.
    That said, I sure do hope he has the fortitude (intestinal or otherwise) to take ALL of the legislators to task for being such bottom-heads about health care, tosses out what they’ve come up with so far (which is nothing but a mismash of cr@p that adds insult to injury), and directs them to come up with an equitable plan for ALL Americans.
    As I wrote in my snail mail to the WH, I hope POTUS will say he’ll: “consider no health care bill unless it provides equitably for ALL citizens; unless legislators can honestly swear that whatever they come up with in the bill is what they’d unequivocally, without any reservation, and with a completely clear conscience, recommend to both their mother and their neighbor’s brother-in-law, to the man running the corner grocery store and the young woman fresh out of college, to the brand new immigrant and the veteran of our uniformed services, to the man who has lost his job after 17-year’s service and the woman who is just starting her own company, to the greatest among us and the least among us, do NOT bring it to me. Neither I, nor the American people, will accept second-rate, slipshod, halfhearted work from you legislators. You should not accept it from yourself or from your colleagues, either; you are better than that. The American people are counting on you to work for them; counting on you to craft a comprehensive healthcare bill for ALL citizens.”
    Yeah, an old geezerette can always hope… Again, thanks for the nudge. beth.
    beth,
    I sent an email to President Obama several weeks ago, detailing elements of HCR that were of great concern to me. I expressed my sincere disappoint with the special interest earmarks, the payday for insurance companies and the failure to keep campaign promises to provide open debate and negotiation by making the processes available on CSPAN. I also included comments related to my dismay that a mandate would be included without any meaningful public option.
    I did not expect to see a response and was surprised to receive an email about a week later. The response, while lengthy was quite general and I am sure it was used as the President’s reply to any variety of HCR subject correspondence. Perhaps you will receive a more specific response. I would post the reply, but it was so ‘slogany’ that it only served to further disappointment me and I deleted it.
    I did comment on how I had supported then candidate Obama in his quest for the Presidency, including the amount of my financial contributions to the campaign, the DNC and to other candidates running in various state elections. I thought that may be more impactful than my personal experiences with the health care system.
    Having watched Nightline last night, I am uncertain whether or not the President is walking away from the current mess. I for one would welcome a do-over, without the special interests converging to find their own paydays, to include unrelated pet projects – all of that has no place in the bill.
    Let’s communicate with the President to make sure he knows that we expect him to lead this time and to prevent another debacle like the one that, thankfully, will not see the light of day. I would support simple bills that are subject specific – therefore small enough to understand and clearly highlight any special interest ‘corruption’. Small bills would effectively let the sun shine down on any further Nebraska deals.
    Examples for such small bills: (1) insurance reform and only insurance reform, (2) tort reform and only tort reform, (3) health care choice including safety net public/private options.
    CORRECTION: The phrase “natural person” should be “legal person” – a legal fiction that allows groups of individuals (e.g., corporations) to be regarded as one individual under this legal fiction. Its original intent was not to give corporations an upper hand over individual natural persons but that is how it has evolved. It is quite useful to accomplish facist agendas.
    In law school, it is not uncommon to hear corporations to be equated as “natural” (i.e., real human individuals) because that attitude is so pervasive.
    In order for individuals (aka decision makers like CEOs, CFOs, Directors, etc.) to be indicted on criminal charges or to be held accountable individually in terms of assets in civil cases, it is necessary to “pierce the corporate veil.” It usually takes quite a bit to do so. The legal threshold that needs to be met to get to wrong doers that constitute the corporation itself is quite high. You don’t often read about that tactic working. You do see corporations having to pay fines, and sometimes the corporation is dissolved but that’s not common by any means. That’s why small business owners try to incorporate rather than function as sole proprietors – corporate protection is much higher than non-corporate business entities. By incorporating, you have a higher chance of protecting your personal assets if your business is found guilty of some illegal activity. It’s not absolute, but in practical terms for large corporations, it might as well be.
    I think Bernie M got himself sent to jail was that the evidence was so overwhelming that the corporate veil shattered – that and the fact, that even in the face of the staggering amounts of money involved, his corporation did not even come close to the multinationals in terms of financial power and influence.
    That so-called “corporate veil” is another legal fiction once designed to help develop our country, but it, too , has been misunderstood, overused and abused.
    The biggest danger in my opinion is that the Court didn’t seem to address the threat of international and multinational corporations interfering in and possibly controlling our political system.
    Too many Americans are not aware of how much of corporate America is not really American-owned and controlled. We all need to do our homework and protest this ruling on this basis as well.
    Good luck to us all.
    Yes, Obama is a first class act. Massachusetts has always been a little bent toward Wall Street.
    Democrats need to harness the economic anger and down to earth talk.
    Change is in the works, but it doesn’t happen overnight.
    Keep the hope all.
