Open Thread – A Global Family
Tonight I wanted to share a video created by a very special global family here in Anchorage. Ujang has a chance to win a trip to Washington D.C.! But to win, he must have a great video (check!) and a lot of hits on YouTube. That’s where you come in!
Click HERE to enjoy a wonderful peek into the life of “An Accidental Global Family.” Leave a comment on YouTube if you like. As of this writing he already has 274 views! Good Luck Ujang!

Done !
And Good Morning from freezing New Brunswick
I watched and also made this into my Facebook status, asking my friends to please click!
Corporations Speak Out Against SCOTUS Ruling, Call On Congress To Approve Public Financing Of Campaigns

Don’t know if this will work, but putting link to BBC Radio 4, Newsquiz.
For a laugh at Scott Brown MA (and Palin), listen from 8.25m to 12.05m
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00pxvr7/The_News_Quiz_Series_70_Episode_3/
Last weeks was also hilarious about Palin.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/...
Of interest to you will be minute 2 to 6 which is about the Chilcott Enquiry into the Iraq war (Blair and Bush), and minute 21.20 to 24.17 which is about “Foxy Lady” (Fox and O’Reilly with Palin).
They are unmercifully lampooned.

Signed with pleasure!

I just listened to the Brown/Palin part. I’ll go back and listen to the whole segment and the other you mentioned later. ROFLMAO! At the part where they mention Granny’s name and the Holy Choir sings I was rolling on the floor holding my stomach.
I’ve bookmarked the site. No one does humor the way the British do. Thank you.
Laughter IS the best medicine.
This is a fabulous video – lots of fun to watch. There were more than 300 views when I watched.
I have posted it as my Facebook status today.
Come on Mudpuppies, let’s get Ujang to Washington, DC!
Lilady, glad youl liked the BBC Radio 4 thing. They do that music every time Palin is mentioned. Cracks me up.
Unfortunately, the second link doesn’t seem to be working, must go off the link after a week. Shame as last weeks was even funnier.
Bookmarking the link is a good idea. The programme is on at the same time weekly, and at other times as a repeat.
UK Lady
Ah, I was just about to write that I can’t find the second link. Too bad.
It’s a wonderful antidote to Faux News.
Watched, commented and added to FB
I could tell from the heart shaped earth that Ujang is an Alaskan to be proud of. I’ll get around to watching it as soon as I can. I’m afraid that hackers are trying to freeze my computer again.
UK Lady…loved the BBC link, thanks. They are always so clever.
Maybe somebody already linked this. But it did brighten up my day a little yesterday when I saw this.
The whole complaint is available

“ICC Complaint Filed Against Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Tent, Rice, Gonzales
Submitted by davidswanson on January 19, 2010
INTERNATIONAL ARREST WARRANTS REQUESTED
Professor Francis A. Boyle of the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign, U.S.A. has filed a Complaint with the Prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (I.C.C.) in The Hague against U.S. citizens George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, George Tenet, Condoleezza Rice, and Alberto Gonzales (the “Accused”) for their criminal policy and practice of “extraordinary rendition” perpetrated upon about 100 human beings. This term is really their euphemism for the enforced disappearance of persons and their consequent torture. This criminal policy and practice by the Accused constitute Crimes against Humanity in violation of the Rome Statute establishing the I.C.C. “
J.D. Hayworth, makes it official, he’ll run against McCain.

Well day-um! Shut my mouth and call me Jethro! (I don’t know what that means except my friend from Georgia always says it.)
I think we should be watching the progress of this complaint very closely! Oh wouldn’t it be wonderful if karma caught up to Rumsfeld and Cheney at last!

McCain won’t even speak up for his own McCain/Feingold legislation in the face of the RepoTaliban controls supremes. And I bet he’s begging for the corporate ads already.

Hopefully its for real, and hopefully other nations will keep persuing the ends of international law against American criminals. Since we don’t. (Arrrrgh.)
It’s hard not to feel really good about this, but it’s been a bummer of a week politically.
Depressing week, so all the more important that we stay positive. Health and peace.
Look how greedy little miss Bristol Is. My whole family of 4 can almost live on what she wants for child support.

Wonderful video! Wow!!
We had snow, lots of it for us, here in the California desert on Thursday. Woo hoo!! We had the biggest snowflakes that I have ever seen in my life! Life is good.
As much as I want McCain to be forced from office, I don’t believe that Hayworth is the answer – and I suspect only a Repub can win in AZ. Is it true that JD is a teabagger?
For all those AZ’ns out there – is there a viable Dem candidate this time around?
Blue Idaho: I second your comment. Real Americans my ass. No real Americans could ask for 1750.00 a month for child support NONE.
One bright note in this whole Supreme Court mess of the past week, coming from the OTHER side…
Apparently there are numerous large corporations that are also unhappy about the recent SCOTUS ruling allowing for unlimited corporate funding of political campaigns. The CEOs are already tired of all the requests they get from candidates and are afraid this will open the floodgates for everyone to repeatedly be asking for vast quantities of money.
Since the majority of the Supreme Court clearly does NOT care about the rights of private citizens of the country, it will be interesting to see if the concerns of the other side make any difference.

Levi’s ET interview in response to the Palins Oprah interview (the still of Sarah on this link is priceless):
http://www.etonline.com/news/2010/01/83231/index.html
Regarding AZ, Janet Napelitano (sp?) was elected governor in the state. So why not a dem as Senator?
The best of all worlds is McCain takes the Rethug primary and Hayworth stays in as an Independent. It would give a Dem a strong fighting chance.
Let’s be careful what we wish for. Just sayin’.
Would be interested in more background on how Janet got elected gov.
Blue Idaho, Dinky P,
I agree. I bet Levi will be in and out of court for years adjusting the child support. He might be in and out of jail for years, too, if he can’t pay it which I am sure is part of the Palin plan.
25 OMG, LOL at that “image” of scarah. It’s so pandering to what she must think of the typical Oprah viewer. It’s so June Clever with an edge. Donna Reed would not have approved.
Oprah should do a show about the damage the unrealistic abstinence programs have done to our young people.

just to bad it doesn’t include oil and insurance companies….Ben and Jerrys is not as much of a threat than Exxon ,big pharma or Insurance companies

All the consequence of being “shamed” out of using birth control. It breaks my heart to see kids abused like this by their families and social group.
Teens need to know that waiting is great but that birth control is mandatory if they chose not to wait. Access also needs to be easy. Planned Parenthood does a great job at helping these kids get birth control.
BTW, let’s all support the corporations who are coming out against the SCOTUS decision. Ben & Jerry is an easy one, but I pledge to never make fun of the Men’s Wearhouse guy.
Thank you for the link to the delightful and heartwarming video.
Think globally, act locally!
1smartcanerican @ 22. We have one that is testing the waters: http://www.rodneyglassman.com/ This is a very red state, but we are hopeful for change.
Just watched the Global Family – very nicely done. And I think it was up to 378. Now I’m off for some tea and I’ll check the links y’all have included about Palin and Brown. Hope I don’t choke on my tea.
I did my part!
And now – for the rest of the story . . .has everyone heard about the stuff on Paul Harvey? Kind of scary, but sort of Laurel and Hardy, too, when he tries to prove lack of security at a US facility!

Ha ! So I’m in Hutto TX and gazing at the town mascot …. a huge statue of a hippo. Van pulls up and group piles out and asks me to take picture. I ask “Where you guys from?”…..”Alaska”……..”You ever hear of the mudflats?”……woman says: “yes , they are quite messy”…….man says: “I think he’s talking about THOSE bloggers” ….I respond: “Yes , I am”…………oops……you would of thought I pooped on the sidewalk. Took picture and shook hands and off they went. Hey , I tried to recruit , they were not buying. Live via BlackBerry from Hutto , home of the hippos.btw..from Anchorage.
HA! Thanks Austin, you made my day! That’s hilarious. AKM
Done. Lovely video.
Brought back memories.
When I was a sophomore in high school, a foreign exchange student sponsored by the school lost his host family and needed another. I asked my parents and they agreed. He lived with us for the year. He went camping and saw bears, learned to clean his room (he had a maid back home) and finally stopped putting sugar in his milk.
We learned to eat black beans, sing the birthday song in Spanish he became part of our family, along with the rest of his family.
He and his wife came to visit for my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. He still calls them Mom and Dad. We went to Guatemala to attend the wedding of his son.
Global Families are for life. I wish more people had the opportunity to experience the connections through foreign exchange students.
Ours was American Field Service. I believe they still operate programs connecting students all over the world.
Ahhh, there seems to be trouble in paradise AKA tea-bagger land. Seems the puppets can’t agree if it’s a good thing or not that Palin is campaigning for McCain (as is Brown). Here’s the problem: To make a difference, you have to be IN the system, but the system (big government) is inherently bad, according to them. Can’t wear both those hats, folks! Sooner or later, the movement will have to stand FOR something concrete and policy-related.
http://www.conservatives4palin.com/2010/01/inconsistency-anyone.html
I just watched about 12 seconds of Palin on Oprah, the hair, the eye makeup, the bright bright bright (did I say really bright?) cheeks. Is Piper her new sylist? SP looks like a kid playing dressup. What’s going on with this crazy woman NOW?
I enjoyed the Global Family video too. Like mlaiuppa, it brought back memories to me. In 2001, I needed a childminder as I was returning to work part-time and my husband was away a lot with work. So, I decided to get an au-pair. *M* from Germany entered our lives and it was wonderful.
She had very little English when she arrived. She was a also a keen sports person. Within a few weeks, she was a member of a Dublin university sports team and made loads of friends there as well as making numerous other friends through English classes. These friends sometimes stayed with us and they were from all over the world. They were all lovely.
In the home, she was brilliant. She was marvellous with the children, particularly my 4 year old. *M* was very good at arts and crafts and we still have evidence of it to this day in the house.
She loved my cooking (?), I suppose it was different to what she was used to, and I can still remember her asking me to show her how to make gravy before she left.
On the other hand, *M* made the most beautiful cakes!! She got to know all my neighbours because she used to borrow cake tins from them. I learnt to appreciate coffee and cake for breakfast.
Her family visited us for her 20th birthday. We had a ball. Her mum did not have a word of English, yet we managed to discuss interior design….ok, the paint on the wall.
*M* has been back twice to stay with us..and we keep in touch. I suspect we always will. It was a marriage made in heaven.

“Roughly 40 executives from companies including Playboy Enterprises, ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s, the Seagram’s liquor company, toymaker Hasbro, Delta Airlines and Men’s Wearhouse sent a letter to congressional leaders Friday urging them to approve public financing for House and Senate campaigns. They say they are tired of getting fundraising calls from lawmakers — and fear it will only get worse after Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling. [...]”

————————————————————————–
While it’s heartening that even some corporations are pushing back on the SCOTUS decision, their stated reason of pushback (“tired of getting fundraising calls”) is a tad bit morally etiolated. I would have rather seen these “corporate persons” come out with outrage against the selling of our elections…….similar to the outrage of REAL “persons.”
Thanks for the link, twain12.
loved the video and hope the young man enjoys d.c.
the video brought back memories of young folk visiting when my daughter was in school; then the house was full of laughter and music and me cooking.
Austintx making friends from Alaska while hanging out with town mascot ( a hippopotamus) priceless.
Super thanks for the link to the BBC News Quiz. I have a new favorite show!
Will the Tea Party make it?
http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2010/0123/Unify-the-new-American-tea-party-Good-luck-with-that
How do you unify a group that is basically ununified?
Any corporate push back against the insane SCOTUS ruling is good. I say, support Ben and Jerry’s.

Yes, indeedy…this made me laugh! I live in Hutto, land of Hippos. Did they at least like Henrietta (the town mascot)? And, more importantly, did you get to see all the other hippos in town and have a piece of pie at the Texan?
nevillize -
Yes , they liked her. Someone took her right ear , ya’ll gotta get that fixed.Hippos are everywhere painted every way you can imagine. And yes , ate me a chicken fried steak at the Texan. Saw the pies but did not have enough room. Got a couple of pics. to send to bubbles. Ate at Marios for breakfast and the migas were great.
austintx….wish you would send me a pie along with the pics.
