The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

State of the Union

Here’s a link where you can watch tonight’s State of the Union address.  It will be the first of the Obama administration.  I’m sure they had hoped it would have good news about health care, but the party of obstruction would have none of that.  So instead the speech will focus on the economy and jobs.  Rumors abound that there will also be something about “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”  So turn on the TV, or click

HERE

The link will take you to CitizenTube where you can submit your own questions to the president.  I know you’ve got some good ones.  He’ll answer some of them next week from the White House and put them up on YouTube.  Remember the snowman who asked about global warming last year?

So grab the beverage and the pop corn.  (That’s twice today!)

Show time is 9:00 Eastern, 6:00 Pacific, and 5:00 Alaska.

I watched (((President Obama))) live on CNN and he kicked a**! This is the man I voted for! I was on my feet clapping and cheering almost as often as Nancy Pelosi. You can see that she really likes him. And seeing Joe Biden just makes me smile. I suddenly feel as if I got my beloved country back tonight. He was harsh and rightly so – on both sides of the aisle, but I loved that he took the Republics on like a train – straight on and no mistake about it. Took whatever blame was due and moved on like a man. I am so proud. I feel like I did the night he was elected and I have hope in my heart again. We have GOT to have this man’s back at every opportunity because you know they will still try to tear him down.

The military folks aren’t showing any pleasure [or displeasure] with the statement(s) because the military is ‘neutral’ — they carry out all decisions of/by their Commander in Chief; they are *not* ‘political.’ They, collectively, are neither Republicans, Independents, or Democrats when in uniform; they are first, foremost, and ONLY Americans.

No matter how the generals (or any military member) feel, personally, about the issue(s), as members of the military, they show *no* partisanship when in uniform. I’ve always admired that about our men and women in uniform: When it comes to national policy and the direction of the POTUS; America first, personal opinions second. beth.

That it was going to be given by the newly elected Gov of VA from his statehouse… (So far, all well and good: chit-chat goes on about the rebuttal…)

Great speech. Renewed my confidence. Not real thrilled about the three-year domestic speeding freeze starting in 2011, but was so relieved to hear the August deadline for Iraq is still firm, that he isn’t completely writing off health care, and that he still has the enthusiasm and stamina to stand firm for the ideas we voted him in to initiate on our behalf.

Hey – a question: Did anyone else notice Justice Alito up in the Republican area, shaking hands with various Republican leaders before President Obama came in? I was watching C-Span to get away from the talking heads and to see more candid shots of the action in the pre-speech phase. I could not believe my eyes to see Alito up there glad-handing politicians. Gees, I don’t remember any Justice doing that before and I am now 60 so I’ve had the privilege of watching many State of the Union speeches.

Does Alito’s escapade bother anyone else? I know he is Republican and was appointed and voted in my Republicans, but once someone becomes a Supreme Court Justice they are supposed to be non-partisan or at the very least give that appearance. The arrogant little snot doesn’t seem to care about proprieties, does he? Makes me fume, particularly after last week’s decision. Sooo glad President Obama faced the five Dump Stumps on the court down and said directly to those five guys that he was going to work with Congress to undo the damage they did with that disastrously bad decision on campaign funding.

Our President conducted himself as a scholar and a gentleman without undermining his integrity. Now that is the man I believed in. May he continue to stay strong and get stronger in his resolve to help the middle class.

    WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) ——— ; )

President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address has already gotten a big thumbs-down from one key group of voters: Republicans who did not see the speech.

According to an instant poll conducted by the University of Minnesota’s Opinion Research Institute, 90 percent of Republicans who did not see the President’s speech strongly disagreed with it.

Additionally, 95 percent of Republicans polled agreed with the statement, “If I had seen the President’s speech, I’ll bet I would have hated it even more.”

Davis Logsdon, who supervised the poll, said there were certain difficulties in polling Republican voters: “Many of them would not let us finish asking the question before answering ‘No.’”

From what I can tell, the Joints didn’t blink an eye with the ‘more troops’ announcement (beginning time – 0:59:20) or with the rescinding DADT (bt – 1:06:30.) I seem to remember them all remaining seated when I saw the SOTU live.

In again watching the speech just now, I see they did, however, stand and applaud when POTUS announced the military deserved/deserves our support when they came home/VA increases (bt – 1:01:40), talked about FLOTUS and 2LOTUSs efforts/initiatives for support for military families (bt – 1:01:50), and when he said: “And at April’s Nuclear Security Summit, we will bring 44 nations together here in Washington, D.C. behind a clear goal: securing all vulnerable nuclear materials around the world in four years, so that they never fall into the hands of terrorists” (bt – 1:03:17).

Possibly the C-SPAN coverage didn’t carry TV angles that other stations did… I’m surmising they all had their own crews out, covering it from their own perches? I’m guessing I missed what you saw. Alls I know (love that phrase!) is: the military, by tradition and code, does *not* “have politics” – from what I saw of the SOTU coverage, the Joints held true to that tradition and code tonight. beth.
