Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Alaska Poll Numbers on Palin and Parnell.

This just in from Public Policy Polling.  Sarah Palin is no longer the 90% approval rating Golden Girl in her home state.  We know that.  Reaction to the one-term ex-gov can now be best described as tepid.

Sarah Palin is no longer an overwhelmingly popular figure in Alaska.

Just 47% of voters in the state now have a favorable opinion of her to 45% who see her in an unfavorable light.

Palin is still in good standing with Republicans as 78% of them have a favorable opinion of her to 15% who view her negatively. But her support with independents is a negative 36/55 spread and with Democrats it’s only 24/74. Interestingly there is a reverse gender gap in Palin’s numbers with 50% of men but only 44% of women having a positive take on her.

It would have been interesting if the poll had asked whether anyone would ever actually vote for her for anything.  I have a feeling those numbers would be different.

Palin’s successor as Governor, Sean Parnell, appears to be in a much stronger position.  58% of voters approve of the job he’s doing to only 19% who disapprove. He’s facing challenges from both Republicans and Democrats this year but right now his approval rating is over 50% with both of them, putting him in a very strong position for reelection.

“Captain Zero” as he was dubbed by Congressman Don Young (R) has a better approval rating than Sarah Palin?  Who would have guessed that a couple years ago.  If Sean Parnell is looking for Sarah Palin to help him in his upcoming campaign, he might just want to rethink that.  Looks like he’s doing better all on his own.

“Sarah Palin’s home state popularity has really declined,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “Voters seem to have been pretty put off by her leaving office early. But Sean Parnell is certainly benefiting from it.”

Yeah, if asked whether they’d vote for her again, less than the 47% with a positive view of her might say “yes.” Certainly, if she runs again she’ll have to answer a lot of questions, like “When will you quit?”

Irishgirl- as a former Alaskan, Sarah is right, Alaskans ‘go with the flow’, they don’t pay attention to politics and live in their own little world. Anything that doesn’t effect them personally they don’t care about. How do you think she got to be Gov. She winked and gave them a lot of word salad and they wanted to get rid of Frank so she fit the bill..then they closed their eyes and let her do what she wanted, they got a pretty Gov, and she gave them energy money what more would you want?? Sarah’s the same person now as she was then but no one bothered to look deeper than the winking and word salad.

Thanks winkwink for the insight. I hope I didn’t come across as rude to Alaskans. We do the same thing here.

Some of us didn’t vote for her in the first place and made darned sure that everyone else knew why. Can’t speak for the others although I question this poll as almost everyone I have spoken with (including those who voted for her) would NOT vote for her again. She definitely appeals to the libertarian crowd. I’ve always said that the state motto should be “Don’t tell me what to do”. AND, this state is very, very RED.

Genealogists have found that President Obama and newly-elected Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) are 10th cousins. Boston Herald: “The New England Historic Genealogical Society says Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, and Brown’s mother, Judith Ann Rugg, both descend from Richard Singletary of Haverhill, Mass.”

That was a poll from Hays Research and the numbers were basically flipped with negatives being slightly higher than positives. There’s also a 3% margin of error, so the book may have had a little effect, but it’s basically the same as it was. AKM

    Lee323No Gravatar says:

The Public Policy Polling poll only asked whether the respondent approved or disapproved of Palin. More pointed questions about fitness for public office etc. may have shown more negativity similar to the recent CBS national poll a week or so ago where 71% of voters don’t want Palin running for POTUS. Even the national conservatives in that poll weren’t keen on a Palin presidential run:

“Conservatives are the only ideological group that holds net positive views of her — just under half do, while a quarter are unfavorable and a quarter of conservatives are undecided.

But while favorable toward her, most conservatives say they do not want to see Palin run in 2012 – 58 percent of conservatives say she should not run.”

    http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2010/01/18/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry6113291.shtml

Who knows? Maybe half of the 47% who “approved” of Ms. Palin in this recent Alaska poll are either related to her, used to work on her staff, currently work on her staff, go to her church, go to Prevo’s church, listen to Eddie Smirk’s show, sold her the Escalade, or style her hair. heh heh. Actually not too far a stretch when you consider the small size of Alaska’s population.

Yeppers….this new poll is definitely in the “damning with faint praise” territory.

Irishgirl — It’s not a bad habit – it’s an endearing character trait.
    ————–
southernyankee — I agree, and it’s not just their overt notions of conservative politics, it’s the covert religious agenda they share. The social paradigm of looking favorably at politicians because “they have a good Christian family” and overlooking the nature of their religion needs some important adjustments now that we know about the Dominionists and their socio-political agendas. Learning that a candidate belongs to a right-wing conservative church is absolutely not the same as learning that a candidate is Methodist or Lutheran or Catholic or Presbyterian, etc. Main stream churches are not dedicated to destroying our secular democracy, our education system, and most of the rest of what most of us hold dear. Dominionist churches are hell-bent on doing those very things. I now automatically disqualify any candidate with ties to right-wing churches from ever getting my vote for any public office.
Palin made over sixty appointments in the final weeks of her reign or errors, and I’ve never heard any count of appointments over the course of her entire tenure, but you can be sure she – like Bush – left as many embedded prayer warrior ideologues behind as possible – precisely what she was mandated (or mandationed?) to do by her religion. If she’d had it her way, Alaska would have W.A. Ross as their AG for the same reason. Giving Parnell the opportunity to follow up with more of the same for six or ten years would provide him the opportunity to make potentially devastating progress toward establishment of a right-wing, parochial bureaucracy. Precisely what he is mandated to do by his religion. In evaluating Parnell as a candidate, bear in mind that he took office knowing he had not been elected and knowing he would face an election in two years – and he still couldn’t find time to greet President Obama? What’s he going to be like when he doesn’t have to be nice?

Support McCain? Palin’s Facebook Fans Go Ballistic

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin posted a letter to supporters on her Facebook page last week announcing her intention to actively campaign for Republican candidates during this election year. She named three candidates in particular: Texas Governor Rick Perry, Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Bachman, and Arizona Senator John McCain. Palin’s post received over 2,500 comments, almost all in support for her campaigning for Perry and Bachman.

    Not so John McCain.

Palin began her Facebook post by expressing breathless excitement over the election of Scott Brown. Few people commented on that. Instead almost all comments focused on McCain, and most were not complimentary.

How does one conduct a representative poll in a state with so few residents? My picture of your state (a view from afar) is that many people living there are nonconformists, and that the reason there are so many Republican voters is that so many are libertarian.
