Hey, boys and girls! It’s time for a visit to the Mudflats Mail Bag!
After Sarah Palin’s excruciating exchange with fellow Fox News talking head Sean Hannity, America was introduced to a brand new word – “mandation.” Seconds later it entered the Twittersphere, and Facebook, and blogs across the cyber universe. Liberals adored it, and Mandation Nation was born. When writing my post, I looked it up in the dictionary and announced on the blog that acording to Dictionary.com, “mandation” meant “no dictionary results.”
In the wee hours of the morning, I got this little gem in the moderation queue from someone in or around Salem Oregon, who calls themselves “AKReport”

Ohhh, my friend…
Anyone familiar with dictionaries, and wikis will know immediately why I got such a good chuckle over this one.
First of all, I don’t think Palin was atually trying to punk ME. I think she was too busy treading water and trying, with limited success, to put all those words together into actual English sentences. And with all that juggling of plates, she had her hands full.
Second, I will give you credit for not calling me a “moran” which I assure you I have been called on occasion. But we won’t let you totally off the hook because you spelled it properly. We’ll get to that in a minute.
And lastly, the big one. You have used a “wiki answer” as your source for stating that mandation is indeed a word that means “another form of involuntary servitude.” (What was the first form, anyway?) I am sure you were very excited to find something that looked like a definition of something that looked like a word. You belived happily, I’m sure, that Sarah Palin had somehow managed to sneak in a really big impressive word that nobody else knew. If only, after you Googled mandation… you had just Googled one more time.
If you had Googled “Wiki Answers” you would have come up with this:

So, if the word you’re looking for doesn’t appear in any actual dictionaries, but only appears as a “wiki answer,” I’m afraid you are incorrect. You, my friend have been shmeklenized.

I saw that “word” in wiki answers the day “mandation” appeared and was reminded how $P/Grifter Granny’s wikipedia page was scrubbed/modified right when McCain announced her as his running mate/piece-of-a$$. I suggest that a contest be held on Mudflats for the ten best definitions of mandation. Entries would consist of a formal definition, plus an illustrative use of same in a complete sentence.

I submit an expanded version of my earlier suggested usage.
Mandation/maen-dai-shun/noun/(a) an enlarged and erect state of male tissue (b) an occurrence of this (from the Latin, mandatum, neuter past participle of mandare, command, from manus (hand) and dare (give).
Example: Is that a mandation in your pocket Tahd, or are you also, too, glad to see me?
I relied on my three years of high school Latin and my personal copy of the Oxford English reference Dictionary for content and form of my definition. Sister Mary Edgar, god rest her sweet soul, always told us that knowledge of Latin would prove of benefit throughout our lives!
Of course,this term is NOT in the Oxford Dictionary, which progresses from mandarin to mandatary (a person or state receiving a mandate) to mandate to mandatory to Mande to Mandela.
I find it interesting that the Facebook rants and other comments that Sarah puts out there are no longer immediately splashed on the CNN Ticker and elsewhere in the MSM. On the one hand, these ridiculous word salads that demonstrate her ignorance are not widely disbursed, on the other hand she has become irrelevant. Just for fun, this is how she’s perceived in my child’s eyes – when our neighbors mentioned they were going to visit Russia on their upcoming vacation, my eleven year old raised one eyebrow and deadpanned “Maybe you’ll see Sarah Palin”. Ridiculous indeed.

Looking it up in the Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (it weighs quite a bit !), as sjk from the belly of the plane correctly points out it is the act of committing (a sermon) to memory. The definition cites (1867) J. MacFarlane -

Mandations warning – ( really !) I was googling variations of “mandation” and clicked on a result for “mandations”. It looked promising but I made a stupid mistake. I’ve been using the internet long enough to know it’s not wise to click on anything leading to a website called “bikinicharm.com”
Within nanoseconds of clicking the link all sorts of madness broke loose. My sytem supposedly began to unpack some sort of zip file ( which I didn’t think could happen simply by clicking a link) and error warnings were popping up with dire msgs. I quickly shut the ‘puter down and rebooted. All is fine ( so far, knock on wood) and perhaps the error alerts and file downloading windows were only a prank but, for the love of pete – Don’t follow the “mandations” link from bikinicharm.com. ( damn $P and her word salad !)
Oh, and AKM, the “You’ve Got Mail” graphic is going to have folks thinking it’s a post about the mystery envelope. Prepare to hear the “ARGH!!!”s !

AK Report is a regular commentator at the Palin Aquatic fan club. I agree with momom. RAM was probably furiously typing the wiki entry right after “mandation” was coined….
As any parent of a high school student knows, teachers will not accept Wikipedia entries in a bibliography for paper of any kind. They know the entries on that site can be altered by almost anyone and are therefore untrustworthy. My daughter’s old high school even added that warning to the student hand book.
That’s about how reputable Wikipedia is… as in NOT one tiny bit.
I didn’t see or hear her use it, but does anyone know if AKReport’s so-called definition of the word even makes sense in the context of how Sarah used it? Or the old one from from the OED?
Ockham’s Razor says it makes far more sense that SP convoluted a word than she knew and used correctly a word that isn’t even in most dictionaries. I would bet my clarinet that SP has never opened the Oxford English Dictionary in her life.

English teacher mother required something similar when I, or a sib, tried to add words to the family lexicon…
Some words survive, in the family, to this day. Many did not make the cut.
Some have gained a slightly wider usage as they describe that which we have yet to formally describe- such as:
destructions: n, 1-instructions for maintenance and repair, preserved for review, after the fact , of-where-we-went-awry and what-not-to-do while maintaining or repairing an item. 2- that which contains methods whereby we can avoid mechanical destruction should we refer to it/them
Naming things is easier than describing activities and “mandation’ in SP’s context IS some kind of activity… whether it is that which you propose is a whole other question

I am no fan of Sarah Palin. My mother left me a six in thick reference dictionary titled “Webster’s New International Dictionary second edition unabridged”, published 1950. Being curious I looked up mandation. To my surprise and chagrin, I found , mandation- the act of mandating.
I have no idea of the context in which the “You Betcha” girl used this. I suspect she made it up on the spur of the moment; and it’s simply coincidence that it is defined in an old reference dictionary. However, it does appear to have been a word, used rarely, never used now.
I am surprised to find the listing. That does not in any way change the size of the space between sister Sarah’s ears; but I did want to provide you with this information.

Sarah and Bristol recently appeared on a magazine cover together holding their babies. The headline read “We’re glad we chose life”. How does that statement reflect? their position as Pro-Life? The headline implies that they had a choice. Sarah even admitted that when she took a pregnancy test ( for Trigg) in state (“where no one would know”), that for a fleeting moment she thought of having an abortion. So, she had a choice. Her most recent facebook argument on the upcoming Focus on the Family Superbowl ad also implies choice. Pam Tebow had a choice. So given these actions, isn’t Sarah really Pro-Choice?

I think mandation is derived from the meaning of “mandate”, according to Roman and Civil Law: a contract by which one engages gratuitously to perform services for another.
Let’s see: Palin dumped her tough day job as governor, wrote (I use that term loosely) what some might call a novel, and now is employed as a Faux News mouthpiece. Yup: mandation it is.

Not only in AK, but the right wing is very active all over the country in getting their people into the judiciary. Most of us have no idea about the people when we are asked to vote for local judges. It’s time we change that.
The religious right has been siezing our school boards and local judges right under our noses. They are are bottom up movement so we need to pay attention at our local level.

Perhaps someone with an institutional subscription to the Oxford Dictionary could make the definitive check. I just hefted down my Oxford 1958 Unabridged and it makes the Wikipedia quote that goes: “According to the OED, a mandation means something committed to memory as a sermon. In use since 1867″ sounds sloppy or fabricated too. Can we tell when that Wiki entry was made?
My book doesn’t show any form for mandation, but under the meanings for
Mandate (verb) 1724 one meaning is “to commit (a sermon) to memory Sc. “

This whole Dominionist movement is truly frightening, especially since so much of it seems to be done in secret and behind a veil of ordinary seeming values and beliefs. Those groups, combined with the ultra-conservatives like those changing science and history curriculums in Texas, are determined to take over this country and, in turn, the rest of the world. They even appear to be making great strides towards just that goal in many parts of Africa, thanks to the religious organizations connected with K Street.

The Oxford English Dictionary says mandation is an obscure word but it doesn’t mean what odd sarah seems to think. This is the exact entry from the OED online edition. I’ll check the Big Book when I get back to work on Monday.

leenie17@99, OMG, my mother used to teach in that district! I’m sure administration and school board has changed since she was there. I never got the feeling the area was particularly … prudish. As others have noted, kids can find these things out in all kinds of ways and they will. In fact, I just said to spouse that of the parent(s) should have just not made an issue of it, and used it to open dialog with their child. Because guess what’s going to happen now? Kids all over America are going to actively seek out any and all dictionaries and scour through them, looking for “naughty’ things.
(That might not be a bad thing – students reading dictionaries).
Anyway, my opinion, don’t take a tool for higher learning, higher thinking, and higher understanding out of the hands of the students who will actually go on to use it. Students with true intellectual curiosity can handle it, especially if they have their teachers and their parents there to discuss it with.
If learning a definition is deemed dangerous in school, we are all in more trouble than we know.

Like you I researched that site because someone a few years ago had used it as a source for info and The info that was given one day was different the next.So I saw as did you that any one can put something up or change anything.The only thing different between then and now I was told is that when you put something up or change something you have to put your name that it was you who changed it.It has never IMO been a credible source of info because of that.Especially since a lot of people don’t check things out.I would think that whoever sent that e-mail did not check a dictionary which would have shown it was not a word. Hello fellow Flatters- it’s been awhile. tossing out a question unrelated to politics but perhaps closer to the heart. I am hoping that your insight to dog behavior can help me out here….
I have a big white dog with carpet thick and thicker white ropey hair.
She is the next breath away so to speak, always that close, her name is Mutti (German for mother) and she is a formidable 85 pounds of need to be nurtured white dawg.
She growls alot now and she is just hitting 4.5 years old.
As beautiful as she is, she punks our other rat dog (Australian- pittbull floppy mix) on a daily or whatever basis. As well she maxed out on my husky-chow mix (Laz) who just died at 15. I don’t really get it, she is a Kuvasz, Hungarian breed, and they are known to be ferocious protectors of their families.
It’s not like she has ever been kicked around or beaten, she just seems to need to be the center of attention. But she is getting verbal beat downs now- just because I won’t tolerate her intimidating my family and/or our other dog.
We are at the point of getting her spayed on Monday (because she growled at my wife) and I am concerned that if her aggression continues we may have to put her down. This growling pattern has escalated over the past few months. She seems to be trying to assert her alpha status.
She is part of the heart and soul of our family- sits by me as I type this, and there is no way I could ever end her life. I just don’t want to risk injury to my family.
Any suggestions?

Spaying..in this persons opinion..is best done after the second..and at most..third heat. That way..they have the entire sequence of hormonal ‘feeds’..needful for full and complete body structures..to develop properly. If the more aggresive behavior is rising..it means it should have been ..nipped in the bud..at the first time frame..you saw it emerging. Now..the march to a good vet, a spaying and healing..and thence to obedience school. Her failings..may be stemmed..by these actions..but..it takes a rather long time..to ‘redirect’..at the age you say she now is. Her failings..are from an unintended lapse on the part of the family..and I wish you well..as you..and the family..seek to correct the situation..and to save her proud and family oriented heart..for the years..yet to come. I have 2 giant breed dogs here..ave. 120ish each..and I love them..but..will never allow them to develop..Any..aggresive behaviors.

We have a 3.5 year old Rhodesian Ridgback/Mix female. She’s always been a handful; destructive behavior w/strong alpha female tendencies.
However, since losing our last female over a year ago this dog has become the actual alpha female in our group of 4. She now exerts her power over not only our males but on other dogs that we meet while hiking.
We have moved to a rewarding of good behavior strategy with a serious verbal and rolled up newspaper smack on the butt penalty for bad or aggressive behavior. We also put her in her kennel when she misbehaves.
The most important thing you can do is over-reward positive behavior; reward with yummy lunchmeat, cheese or other “over the top” treats. Just keep reinforcing the positive, and disciplining the negative. Once the positive outweighs the negative begin ignoring the negative. Sometimes it seems that being ignored is worse than being chastised.
Anyway, this is what we are doing. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

I am Hungarian and am familiar with this dog. The Kuvasz originated in Asia and was bred to guard the nobility and to hunt large game. They are fearless and can bring down a bear. While most of the breed is docile and sweet-tempered, occasionally they can be domineering. Spaying should help a lot. They are fiercely protective of their families which can be a very big plus and a very big negative in the same way that Rotties are the sweetest dogs, but don’t mess with THEIR people. Has this doggie been trained? Oh, also (too) they need tons of exercise – they’re working dogs.
Have you always had Mutti? Is she new to your family? She seems to be exhibiting some anxiety behaviour. Some Bach’s Rescue Remedy in her water can help her to relax.
Tuetonic, spaying won’t make a difference. She is exhibiting anxiety issues. One of my bitches has that problem. She’ll bark at me. It’s not aggression, it’s anxiety. If I were to scold her, it only makes it worse. So, when she does this, I call her over and gently pet her and whisper sweet nothings in her ear and give her a belly rub. It does the trick. Try it. You’ll be surprised at the result. Usually, you wouldn’t train a dog in this way, but for those with anxiety issues, you have to deal with it differently. Many would say that this reinforces bad behavior. It doesn’t. The dog isn’t behaving badly. The dog is upset.
Also, there is a product called “dog appeasing pheramone” DAP. You can get it on line. http://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Zone-D-DOGS-Plugin/dp/B000O5HUEA
You spray it on a piece of fabric and then tie that around the dog’s neck. It really works at calming a dog.

That was some good input. Yes we have had her since birth. She was spanked a little bit as a puppy- but nothing serious, and she has no formal training.
All of your observations are correct. We have a yard so she runs every day- but that is fairly recent (2 months). Before that she was let out on a leash.

Geoffrey Dunn’s new book is coming out in a few months. I wonder if in his investigations he has talked to or tracked down any of her College Alumni for sources or stories…?

I just find it hard to believe that no one from those College Days doesn’t have some interesting stories or tidbits for that time or has not come forward. It’s not like they don’t remember the name…. “2008…McCain/Palin”… HeLLO..?
She hasn’t written about that time ( or BRAGGED )in ANY of the books so it makes you wonder. Because she elaborates and embellishes EVERYTHING!.. to make herself look good. But she doesn’t talk about College. Hmm. Why?

I know of a case where a 3 1/2 yr (male) dog, who had always been nice started growling at the (male) spouse. It seemed like jealousy so they had the wife train it 1rst by snapping fingers, saying “NO” then when obeyed giving a tiny treat morsel w/praise (in pocket). Then the spouse carried the treats and did same. I’m not an expert but it worked for them and that was over a year ago and no, the dog doesn’t growl just to get treats for stopping! He just learned that the mate wasn’t a threat to his ‘lovelife’. Kinda like teens hitting puberty when their hormones go awry, girls hate their mom and boys hate their dad.

teutonic 13: Here is my advice, for what it is worth.
I have been the “lucky” owner of 2 large Malamutes who were other dog aggressive due to lack of opportunity to socialize them at the appropriate age (8-12 weeks) as well as their inherent nature (Mals have 2 overriding characteristics: they talk and they like to fight).
Enough about me. When they tried to tear a neighbor’s tiny dog to pieces (“just playing” they told me) it was off to obedience school. As our wonderful instructor advised me, it doesn’t matter what dog starts it, the bigger dog (and his or her owner) will always be at fault. The bigger the dog, the more responsibility the owner has to keep it under control. You being the alpha in your family/pack is a MUST. Your dog will feel more comfortable if she knows the social hierarchy.
This does not, and should not, mean hitting her. In fact, when you feel like hitting your dog it is time for obedience school. It does not matter what age she is, obedience school can work wonders.
Find an instructor who teaches with the positive reinforcement model. Because of the breed that we had, we had to learn “the boogeyman” technique which involves an empty can, putting in pennies or stones that rattle and some training. This is aversion training but doesn’t harm your dog physically. It comes out of nowhere (as far as the dog is concerned) as they do not associate it with you (thus the boogey man) and they will immediately stop whatever behavior they are displaying. Works like a charm. You need to find an obedience instructor who knows how to train this (it took about 3 trials for my big guy-110lbs-to get it). You don’t just throw the can at them.
Obedience school is usually about 6 weeks and you are expected to be consistent. It is a great experience for both you and your dog.
Other thoughts are: has Mutti had a thorough physical by your vet recently? Dogs often tend to be aggressive out of fear or pain. Sometimes aggression can be the first sign of pain. Talk to your vet and then get thee to an obedience school. It will be the best thing you ever did with your best friend.

I got moderated too earlier. In fact, I would even go so far as to say I was mandationed.
I had to read the salon link from OMG again to try to cheer up after reading the twitter/facebook stray cats garbage. Sarah Palin is beyond disgusting. She needs to be stopped, she is working idiots minds into a frenzy. Some of these people didn’t start out as idiots which is even more sickening.
I think I’ll just get snockered and focus on the good our President did this week.
Hoping all went well this week and AKM is giving us “The Envelope Please” on Grammy night. Feb 1rst is monday……
A brief moment when a letter changes your life…
Or is it an age gap?
My entire life has been about chasing this “sense of destiny” thing. Always had a murmur in the back of my sub conscience that seemed to suggest the potential greatness of things to pass that would be had, and of a stronger resolve that would be my lightening rod dictating action that implied spiritual greatness.
I was always at the trigger, it was forever to be- me taking the last shot that saved humanity and what not. An essence of a higher calling if you will, tempered by the fact that I am what I am.
What I am not- but what I deal with, is not an ill wind- rather just a continuing breeze that you raise sail to- and implies a course less spectacular than what was on the horizon.
We walk the walk…
Yeah, that’s how it goes. That dream.
So fast forward 48 years and a failed marriage. The flip side of that card? 20 years doing one of the most intense jobs in the medical industry.
On a windy day, the salt on the canvas can easily be wiped away, revealing writing eloquence as a pure shadow canvassing for attention. An innocent brush stroke can so suddenly seem to appear so impure.
So how does it go?
Well it is always less than pretty when a letter comes into the home and your best half is crying. That has a pretty savage bite. Especially when that half of the equation is your wife and 28 years younger.
That particular letter sealed a lot of deals.
I guess it suggests that it is inappropriate to marry if there is a 28 year gap between a husband and a wife. It ignores a collection of pictures of you and your mate, and translates that particular vacuum into a collage deemed entirely insignificant, those snap shots that we call life- obliterated because we chose each other.
It truly is an interesting concept. After watching so many love-knows-no-boundaries movies , what is never addressed is the potential love between partners removed by almost 3 decades in terms of age.
Almost ridiculous, no money and power involved here. I don’t even live in a 3rd world country- let alone own one.
So am I to be- are WE to be the first wave? If so- I shall stand up.
Here is the sand I stand on.
It was the third post. The first few were an attempt to elicit a response. One of so many I sent out as emissaries to cheat on my wife. It was the third post on the internet- “Are you an ET?” was the question.
It was the third post that was replied to on a Wednesday. We met on the following Tuesday. It was less than a week that changed our futures.
So I guess when do you switch labels? When does cheating become a mid-course correction? when do you finally get to the point where you you regain the honesty that you have lost in the process?
Certainly there was lying and deception before I met Kashmir. But there was none after . There was not a single moment of hesitation, second guessing, or a suggestion of a hidden agenda not to be shared.
We shocked each other. I think that was what it was. There is no way we should have ever been together except that when we wrote one another- it was so blissfully honest and free from the sabotage that lurks incipient in lesser winds.
I cherish that. It is always the first smile. Yip- the first one from a distance. A display and confirmation of of so many hours spent being best friends on the internet.
It wasn’t even the first kiss (Lake Michigan Shore) but it was the genuine smile I saw half way through lunch at the beach restaurant we were at- that sealed it. I think she had a sandwich- but I know I had a smile.
So what is it like to be so much older? 28 years- at that time Kashmir was barely 20 and I was 48.

It needs to be shared…. It was never about anything other than a truly beautiful belief in one another…
The point to be made is that we are 53 and 25 now. That would be 6 years of scrutiny- shocked looks, and natural assumptions. Six years of enduring. Loving each other was simple, unspoken scrutiny and gossip has it’s own nest to manifest it’s own special cruelty- as we become such an easy target for such less worthy foes.
There are forests to hide behind- but we never took that road.

For the record, I used OneLook dictionary search (1,047 dictionaries) and it returned a single match. Only one single use in an online publication was cited. The biggies, Oxford, Webster, etc., had no listings. Its single use appears to be the typical “verbification” of nouns that has become increasingly common. “Mandation” appears to be such a verbified “mandate.”
I would bet money that “mandation” just sort of tumbled out of Palin’s piehole without any rhyme nor reason. She may well have assumed that it was a real word, but she was simply babbling in her typical Palinspeak stream of unconsciousness manner.
If Palin created a word to describe something that lacked a precise term, she would have been employing a neologism. Clever wordsmiths are famous for doing so. Authors such as James Joyce, Lewis Carroll, and Pogo creator Walt Kelley were all neologistic masters. Palin is most definitely not a master wordsmith.
When she uttered “mandation” she was simply experiencing a burst of palinicity, or the tendency to speak incomprehensibly goofy sh*t when she becomes confused. Unfortunately, this condition is chronic and nearly perpetual with Sarah Palin.

Until you start the obedience class, here are a few things you can do.
Make her sit before you feed her or give her any treats. She must sit for you. Say it once. If she doesn’t she doesn’t get fed. (I’m sure she knows the sit command). Don’t let her make you repeat it.
You need to establish on no uncertain terms that you and the entire family are Alpha. You can all take turns feeding but first she must sit on a single command.
Second. Feed the other dog first. She needs to know her place and she is trying to work her way up the pecking order.
You still need obedience school, but until you get there, start with this.
If she feels rewarded with your presence you can also punish her be withdrawing your presence. If she growls, tell her No. If she continues, put her out of the room and close the door. Let the little dog stay with you. It won’t take long before she’ll learn that if she growls she’ll lose her favorite thing, being in your presence.

If you stopped taking her out on a leash because of it, start walking her twice a day. It not only allows her to explore new smells, but it reinforces your position as alpha. If she knows how to heel, make her. Make her sit and stay at every corner before crossing the street.
