Frank Schaeffer on the Shannyn Moore Show Today
4 02 2010
Today on 1080am KUDO, Shannyn Moore will be talking to special guest Frank Schaeffer. He was profiled extensively in Max Blumenthal’s book Republican Gomorrah, and is the author of Crazy for God.
Schaeffer is a fascinating character, the son of Francis Scheaffer, an American Christian theologian who is widely considered to have been responsible for the rise of the Christian Right in modern politics.
Frank’s nonfiction includes “Keeping Faith-A Father-Son Story About Love and the United States Marine Corps” and AWOL-The Unexcused Absence of America’s Upper Classes From Military Service and How It Hurts Our Country.” Frank’s latest book is, “Crazy for God: How I Grew Up As One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back.”
It promises to be a lively conversation about the conflation of religion and politics from the unique point of view of a former insider who was part of the movement’s rise. Click HERE to listen live.
Click HERE for Schaeffer’s memoir Crazy for God. His new book is titled Patience with God. Schaeffer wants to change the conversations we have about God. He is critical of the politicized evangelical movement, and also of the proselytizing atheist movement. He seeks middle ground and personal relationships as the basis of our spiritual center.
Schaeffer says he understands Sarah Palin and the appeal of the lucrative benefits she now receives from her party and religious financial backing. Schaeffer regrets having been one of those who put the current movement in motion, and eloquently seeks to set things right. He sees Christianity as having been co-opted by people who are concerned with reviling “the other.”
And if you’re around from 1pm-2pm Alaska time, tune in for “Thursdays in the Mud” when I’ll join Shannyn for a regular weekly segment for the last hour of the show.

Schaeffer is terrific. Has he been on Fox? No, I’m guessing.

I noticed a new video up on that MSNBC site about Todd Palin’s role in his wife’s administration….as told by 3,000 pages of emails.
Interesting.

What’s a proselytizing atheist? Do they come around knocking on your door trying to convert you? For thousands of years religious people have been spouting off their beliefs and a few years after atheists say “whoa, wait a sec” and counter with their own, they are accused of creating a “proselytizing atheist movement.”
Last I saw atheists weren’t trying to make THEIR beliefs into law.

As a Christian, I appreciate Shaeffer and the publicity these blogs provide. It is heartbreaking to me to watch my faith being hijacked by hate.
There is NO BIBLICAL JUSTIFICATION for what they are doing. These people are “making stuff up” by taking things out of context and ignoring the real message of the New Testament.

Sorry for the double post, but proselytizing is different from attempting to enact legislation based on your beliefs.
There are atheists who spend a lot of time and energy trying to belittle other’s beliefs and convert people to their way of thinking. Isn’t that proselytizing?

I have never seen proselytizing atheists in the so-called mainstream media, though. Who are they?

The “Tea Party” convention got underway in Tennessee Thursday evening with former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo kicking it off with these words, “People who could not even spell the word ‘vote,’ or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House. His name is Barack Hussein Obama.” According to CNN, the statement was followed by cheers.
The featured speaker for the weekend in Alaska’s very own Sarah Palin.

“Last I saw atheists weren’t trying to make THEIR beliefs into law”
That’s just a matter of time. In my country they sure are. They’re trying to get freedom of religion deleted from our equivalent to your constitution. They claim it’s covered by other freedoms, which, of course, it is not alltogether. They also want to forbid baptisms, circumcisions, church membership, religious instruction and so on for any child too young to consent. If they could, they would forbid children to be exposed to any form of religion at all before the age of 18, and take them away from the parents if they had to. And, no, they’re not left; they’re right. At least the ones I can think of.
