The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

OK, Palin is Just Being Totally Re… Ridiculous

First, let me say that in the last two weeks I have never heard so many people use the “R” word.  No, not “Republican.”  The other one.  Why?  Because Sarah Palin told them not to.

Sarah Palin, for all her months in the public spotlight, has simply not learned this lesson – you cannot be the nation’s mommy.  You cannot be the word police.  And perpetual victimhood, even from you, will start to wear on people after a while.

After President Obama’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, in a closed-door meeting six months ago, called a strategy being used by a group of his fellow Democrats “f***ing retarded,” Sarah Palin sprang into action and hopped in her squad car.  The word police pulled over Rahm Emmanuel, yanked the perp from the vehicle and slammed him down on the hood and called for him to step down from his cabinet position.  You can picture Rahm Emmanuel with his hands behind his back, and his cheek all smushed down on the car by Palin’s manicured hand, forced to say in that smushed up fish-face way “I’n thorry Tharah.”

Then, of course, Rush Limbaugh started in using the word “retarded” and the even more insulting term “retard.”  And he used it talking about actual people, not political strategies.  And he used it not once in a closed door meeting, but FORTY times on the air on a national radio show.  He decried our “politically correct” culture, practically using Palin by name.  He even said there was going to be a “Retard Summit” at the White House, and that Emmanuel was simply calling a bunch of people “retards” who were “retards.”

Uh oh. We braced ourselves.  Imagine how the Word Police were Rush Limbaugh his sorry ass.  Can’t wait to see him all smushed on the hood of the car apologizing.  This was gonna be good…  After all, Emmanuel only did it once.  Limbaugh did it forty times, unapologetically.

But, apparently that was okey-dokey in Palinland, because Limbaugh was just using “satire.” “Satire,” you see, is perfectly acceptable.

Retard, retard, retard, retard, retard, retard, retard, retard, retard, retard,

retard, retard, retard, retard, retard

retard, retard, retard, retard, retard

retard, retard, retard, retard, retard

retard, retard, retard, retard, retard

retard, retard, retard, retard,

retard, retard, retard,

retard, retard

retard.

Forty times. Whew!  That’s a lotta satire.

But don’t think this issue is over.

Now, the animated Fox series The Family Guy has gone and done it.  They’re known for being an equal opportunity offender and they’ve done an episode that has a clip of a Down Syndrome girl going out on a date to a restaurant, and saying that her father was an accountant and her mother was the former governor of Alaska.  Now bear in mind, that Palin’s Down syndrome child is a baby, not an adult.  He is a boy, not a girl.  His father is a former oil field services worker for British Petroleum, not an accountant. Neither the word “retarded” nor the word “retard” were used.  Special needs people were not ridiculed, but shown as functioning adults doing the things we all do. And the former governor from Alaska was never mentioned by name.  In other words, they just wanted to dangle a little bait and see if the almost one term ex-governor would nibble at it.

The answer, of course, was “no.”  She did not nibble.  She instead went for the bait like a silver salmon in the first week of August.  Down it went -  hook, line and sinker.

But, wasn’t the animated comedy show just using “satire?”  Didn’t this make it OK?  Of course not.

Enter the attack crew.  A Facebook post on Palin’s page said that the Family Guy episode was like “another kick in the gut.”  Palin, a commentator for Fox News, slams her employer by titling her post “Fox Hollywood – What a Disappointment.”  Fox and Hollywood in the same sentence?  Them’s fightin’ words for conservatives.  And then, in the spirit of leaving her children out of it, she volunteered a statement from her daughter Bristol.

“Here is her conscientious reply, which is a much more restrained and gracious statement than I want to make about an issue that begs the question, “when is enough, enough?”

Are there any limits to what some people will do or say in regards to my little brother or others in the special needs community? If the writers of a particularly pathetic cartoon show thought they were being clever in mocking my brother and my family yesterday, they failed. All they proved is that they’re heartless jerks. – Bristol Palin”

I’m sure that the heartless jerks who created the particularly pathetic Hollywood cartoon appreciated Ms. Palin’s gracious and restrained statement.  Actually, I’m sure they are enjoying the increased publicity and the fact that their vague mention of Palin got a nuclear reaction of which they only could have dreamed.  They prove once again what anyone who has spent any time paying attention to Sarah Palin knows – she cannot rise above the fray.  She cannot ignore personal swipes.  She cannot resist the opportunity to be a victim.  Ever.

Unless, of course,  the insults come from the right.  Bill O’Reilly last night gave her the opportunity to address this apparent hypocrisy about who can and who cannot use the “R” word.

O’REILLY: “Now I want to give you a chance to clarify something that I have gotten a lot of mail on. You called for Rahm Emanuel to step aside because he said F****** retard— and then Rush Limbaugh said it—he was talking about political correctness—that was before Emanuel I think it was—but you said OK there was a difference between what Emannuel did and what Limbaugh did.”

PALIN: “And as for Rush Limbaugh: No I believe that it was after Rahm Emanuel said what he said–that Rush Limbaugh using satire not calling a group of people f****** retards. But using yes, the R-word and I said that calling names –any person any party– c’mon let’s all grow up and let’s not call each other names, because it certainly invalidates what our argument is all about when you start calling people names.”

O’REILLY: “OK Just to be clear: You didn’t come down on Mr Limbaugh because you felt what—He didn’t have any ill intent in what he said? Why didn’t you come down on him a little harder?”

PALIN: “As I have explained he was using satire–using the R-word so he could bring to light what it was that Rahm Emanuel was calling other people and um…”

This is not the first instance of a free pass for the right.  Remember back when she had advice for Hillary Clinton to stop whining about sexism and blaming the media?

And yet, as soon as she herself was “under that sharper microscope” we heard all kinds of whining about lipstick on pigs, and unfairness in general. A picture that she herself posed for, in running shorts and leaning on a flag was also reason to cry sexism. “The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now.” So much for plowing through and working harder.

And crickets were heard again after Glenn Beck was asked about a potential Palin/Beck 2012 presidential ticket and had this to say:

“I was just thinking, what, I’m going to take a back seat to a chick?” Beck quipped, to laughter from the studio. “Go shoot a bear, make some stew, I’m hungry in here.”

In an interview with Newsmax last week, Palin “wouldn’t rule out” running with the controversial talk show host in 2012.

“So while she’s considering it … I just want her to know, I’m ruling it out. A Palin-Beck ticket, I’m absolutely ruling it out,” Beck said. “I’m just saying, Beck-Palin, I’ll consider. But Palin-Beck — can you imagine what an administration with the two of us would be like? She’d be yapping or something, I’d say, ‘I’m sorry, why am I hearing your voice? I’m not in the kitchen.’ I mean, you’d have to live up to the evil conservative stereotypes, you’d have no choice but to do so.”

So was THAT sexist, or just a little bit of good-natured satire?

What’s that noise?

[weeee-oooooo, Weeeee-Ooooo, WEEEE-OOOOO!]

Hey look, it must be the Hypocrisy Police!

    I with you, ATF–

Her constant reminders to all of us that Trig has Down Syndrome make me wonder if that’s the only thing she really sees in him. It would be refreshing if there was note about how Trig was walking now, or saying his first words (or sentences), or how much he likes to color, or whatever it is he enjoys at his age. My son attends an after-school program that involves people at various learning and developmental levels–and yes, there are several people there with Down Syndrome. One of the reasons I have kept him in the program (other than that he loves it and has many friends there) is that it has taught him to look past people’s faces and mannerisms to the person. I guess that’s what bothers me the most about SP’s constant combativeness, and her constant reminders that her son has DS. I’d really, really, like to hear something else about him. He’s a baby, not a symbol, not a political counter.

Thanks for pointing out that Rahm wasn’t calling a person a retard he was calling an idea retarded. Indelicate to be sure but substantially different. Still, Sarah and the others continue to lie and say he called Democrats in the room retards.

Does Palin suggest that no character is ever allowed to have DS? That a DS actress shouldn’t be allowed to perform that job?

Doesn’t Billo give Palin a chance to “clarify something that he’s gotten a lot of mail on”, precisely because the letter writers didn’t perceive Limbaugh’s “retard rant” as being satirical?

  29. 29

OK, I’m not giving Sarah a pass on anything. She is so hypocritical and inconsistent that it boggles the mind.

However, I found my self in an extremely embarrassing situation when I was working in my first job. I was going to school and was telling my co-workers – older ladies – about some silly thing that had happened at school. And I said I felt like a retard, which was so commonly used in 1969. As soon as that fell out of my mouth, I remembered that one of the women I was talking to was the mother of an adult daughter who was retareded. I wanted to take it back and I felt like crawling in a hole somewhere. I’d met her daughter, and she was a lovely, caring person, who saw the best in everyone and went out of her way to brighten the day of others.

I’ve never used that particular word since, and have gone out of my way to point out to all the kids I’ve worked with through the years just how inappropriate and hurtful that can be. There are so many other words that can be used that don’t harm someone else or hurt their feelings.

I’m offended by Rahm’s use, but honestly, it was done privately. I hope he grows up soon. The man is smart enough to find a different word to use.

But Rush Limbaugh was the worst. He said it, and said it again, and said it to be rude and used the slur version of the word rather than the descriptive one. He didn’t say it in private, but on the air, intentionally putting it out there for everyone to hear. And the problem is, while Sarah gives him a pass that it was satire, some of his listeners will take it as permission to go on using this particular word that is very hurtful.

Sometimes you don’t know who you are talking to and what their family situation is, so why take the chance of offending someone with any kind of slur when there are so many other ways to make the same point.

And of all of them, Sarah and Bristol should be ashamed of themselves for condoning the idiot Rush for anything. He’s no friend of theirs and no friend to any person with special needs.

I’m not a fan of Family Guy, but the clip that I saw didn’t seem that bad. It showed a young woman with DS who was able to carry on a nice conversation, who was aware of how she should be treated and who insisted on being treated well by her date. Now, whatever else was in the show, I don’t know. That was actually the least offensive of all the things that have been out there concerning the use of the “R” word.

If she had watched, she would know that neither Trig nor Downs people in general were not attacked. She did no research before lashing out and name-calling….wait, Bristol did the name calling.

Some commenters over at “Disability News” think it would be better for the disabled if Sarah would go away.

Sarah is the one who chose to use the almost-two year old in her family as her photo prop in numerous appearances. During her Big Bus Book Tour, that child was brought out to screaming crowds without wearing his glasses, his hearing aids or any clothes other than a T-shirt and diaper. Now, he is the convenient prop whenever Sarah (and/or Bristol) feel insulted. Sarah is a professional victim.

Her outrage would carry some weight if she chose to be a spokesperson for the National Association for Down Syndrome or any other charity which offers education and support for people with disabilities. For Sarah to do this, she would have to appear at fundraisers, film public service announcements and donate generously to their cause(s), all at no fee or cash dividend for Sarah.

Her outrage would carry some weight if she called out each and every offender. But, her outrage is selective; Limbaugh’s repeated use of the forbidden word was satire. The Family Guy cartoon is satire. When David Letterman, or any other comedian, makes jokes about Sarah, it’s satire. It’s a joke. Emanuel was referring to people in his own party whose actions upset him; his outburst was at a private meeting, not in a public forum. (This may shock some people, but Emanuel’s style is bombastic, and his favorite words are all swear words).

Limbaugh wasn’t satire, and he wasn’t funny. As proof of Limbaugh’s hypocrisy, there is a tape of Rush using mocking gestures and speach in a crude attempt to mock Michael J. Fox’s disability. Where is the outrage, Sarah?

I hope Sarah and Bristol get called out big time for this. I just logged onto yahoo to go to or business email account and a byline was STILL or AGAIN about Palin continuing to call out Family Guy and Rahm Emanual. I am so tired of her and so tired of her false victimhood. I hope the lovely young actress who played the part will say something nationally about this and take care of it once and for all. We now cannot even go about our business without hearing of this.

I was around a young woman who had Down Syndrome for many years. She was so pretty and sweet and loving. But, especially when she was in her 20′s, she could be pretty demanding when she wanted to. Because she was just a young person who wanted her way sometimes like we all do. She was assertive and when she didn’t get her way, she could pout or be cranky like everyone else. When she wanted to be left alone with her drawing and/or her programs on tv, she made that known. We were lucky … the parents had been told that she would not live to even be 30; she lived into her 50′s. For sweet Paula’s sake, and in her memory, somebody shut Sarah up!

I am so in awe of the parents blessed with children of Down Syndrome…what they do to make their children as normal as the rest. Our neighbors had a retarded daughter (from measles at age 2) and they were in there 70′s and still taking care of her. One day she broke down in tears…it was Christmas and had received notes from friends telling about what they had been doing the past year…she said, “I’m still taking care of our baby”. It’s not right to put other people down until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. When is Sarah going to start her walk with those before her? Maybe then others will respect her? I wish Trig’s real mother could have or would have taken this walk with him.

    You make really good points.

Also, Sarah does not seem to have “connected” with either other families or any organizations that address issues for ADA persons (Americans with Disabilities Act).
There are tens of thousands of Americans (for many years I was one, in a small way, and may be again, I hope) who have no ADA persons in their families, possibly excepting the elderly members, and yet they give freely of their time and effort to the cause of helping ADA individuals. And of course the families, teachers, friends and ADA Americans themselves. The community is huge and its task is huge.

I think Sarah’s “maverick” approach, that is more “lone wolf” approach, may be an indication of a complete lack of empathy, both before she became a celebrity and since.
She seems to have no cognizance that there is a community of people who care about ADA and who may not agree with her, or may be hurt or insulted by her when she flaunts her faus-martyr’s wounds.

DS, rape imaging both her daughters as victims for all of us to visualize, poverty, as in her crack about trailer trash, cookies for the freezing indigenous people of Alaska, and on and on.
Not only is there no there there for her intellectually, but there is no heart there, despite her claims of Christianity.

When the Ink Clears: A Second Peek at Palm-Gate

“Yet after nearly a year and a half of the Sarah Palin Show airing on prime-time, what do we know about her beyond some unnecessary details of her personal life?

    Very little.

We know a lot about her feuds and travel schedule, but very little about her ideas.

That’s pretty strange, and pretty unsettling considering what it implies. All that camera-time, all those opportunities to stake out her political identity and it’s just been flash and splash every time. She can mock Obama’s “hopey-changey stuff” all she wants, but after all this time Sarah Palin still hasn’t made her case.

What the palm-reading incident drove home for this observer is simply this:

It’s time to admit that we do know Sarah Palin.”

For more than 25 years I’ve worked in various jobs (in the fields of recreation, competitive sports and education) that involved both children and adults with disabilities. Some were born with their disabilities, while others acquired them through trauma or illness. Once the families (or individuals themselves) accepted the reality of the disability (which took some longer then others), one of the steps that was nearly universal was a quest for knowledge.

Research into the disabilities themselves, medical and therapeutic intervention, assistive technology, opportunities for education and careers, support groups, financial assistance – these were the things that the people who cared about the person with a disability did to make their lives as successful as possible. I’ve known many wonderful parents who have started organizations, support groups, newsletters and websites dedicated to the disability that has touched their lives. They share their experiences with each other and, in doing so, help to spread information and knowledge to others, as well as provide mutual emotional support.

It always struck me that Palin admitted from the beginning that, after she was told Trig had DS, she did not attempt to learn ANYTHING about it. From the way she has dragged him around the country since he was an infant, it is clear that she has paid no attention to the medical, educational, technological and therapeutic needs of her child, and has obviously learned nothing more than how to use him for her own gain.

She has had a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of people with DS and their families by showing the public what people with DS can accomplish and by raising funds for medical research, social and recreational organizations and activities. She could have made a huge impact on the public’s awareness of DS and how to integrate people with DS into the community, school and workplace in ways that benefit everyone.

Instead, she has chosen to make her son into her own personal cross to bear, focusing on how his DS affects HER and ignoring what he needs to make his life better and more fulfilling. I feel tremendous pity for Trig, not because he has DS, but because he is part of a family that will NEVER put his needs above their own and will not provide the support he needs to reach his potential.

I grew up in the 50s and 60s with a retarded brother. That’s what we called it back then. It wasn’t intended to be mean, it described his condition. He was slower than us. Retarded. We accepted and loved him. Our mother devoted years to finding the right educational environment, talented compassionate teachers, and helping him develop to his fullest potential. We were so proud of him when he was mainstreamed in the 7th grade. Our hearts were filled with joy when he went on his first date. As a teenager I believed these two developments meant that my brother was going to be able to lead a normal life. I am proud to say he has lived a wonderful life. He is still retarded in some areas but has maximized his strengths which has enabled him to enjoy a rich and independent life. He would not be where he is today if our mother had not devoted so much time, love, and energy to his early development.

I don’t watch much TV and the portions of the Family Guy I saw in the past while channel flipping did not appeal to me. Out of curiosity I watched the offending clip. I actually liked it. What I saw was a young lady with Down syndrome out on a date at a nice restaurant with a fellow who apparently cared enough about her to take her there. She shows a playful side by saying her mother is the former Governor of Alaska. It is commonly known that the former Governor of Alaska has a child with Down syndrome, and a cartoon child with Down syndrome playfully claimed her as her own mother. And this is offensive because??? It in no way demeaned people with Down syndrome, in fact, it showed one in a rather positive light, on a date in a nice restaurant, knowledgeable of current affairs, and with a quick sense of humor.

This just seems like another opportunity for Palin to stay in the news, play the victim, and further exploit her children. Sarah Palin has a strong voice on the world stage and, after being a celebrity for over a year, she still squanders that voice on imagined wrongs. Now that’s retarded.

As a word freak myself (I used to teach writing courses) I used to give my students a lecture on vulgarity and profanity. My take on it was a bit different that others I’ve seen here. I based it on the history of the English language. Many of our “forbidden” words–particularly those that refer to bodily functions–have Anglo-Saxon roots. When the Normans conquered England in 1066 the language of society changed from Anglo-Saxon to Norman French. Ambitious Anglo-Saxon mamas began advising their toddlers not to say, “Gotta s–t, Ma,” because it was “vulgar”–literally, “of the people.” Eventually English won out over French–but the prejudices against those words remain. We STILL advise our children to avoid “vulgar” language.

When my son grew old enough to begin experimenting with some of the expressions he heard at school I simply noted what he was saying, explained to him that he needed to choose his audience carefully when he used those words because some people would make certain assumptions about him that might not be true if they heard him using them, and didn’t get too excited.

The allure faded. Now he curses very occasionally, never to excess, and we never, ever curse when we’re fighting–fighting is to resolve problems, not vent spleen.

I have not taken that approach with racial, ethnic, gender, and ability-related slurs. We talk a lot about those (one of our closest family friends is a dwarf, and we’ve had many conversations about why it’s really, really important to never call him “Shorty,”–even though he himself used the name for years. He is “Uncle Tommy,” and always will be. For me, “retard” falls into this category. It’s a word intended to belittle and denigrate–and like any of those words, it’s worst when it’s applied to someone who may see the word not as an insult, but as reality.

Having said that, though, I think that banning the word is about as futile as Prohibition was–someone once said that you can’t legislate morality. I think the same thing goes for respect. It’s something you either believe is important, or it’s not. Retard is an ugly word–but in the end, it’s just a word, and it speaks far more loudly about the person using it than it does about the person or ideas to whom it is applied.

Not living in the US and not always having the time to watch or read the news every day I sometimes hear about these things later and in bits and pieces. When I first heard her blow up about Rahm Emanuel I wondered what was going on. What exactly happened? Then I found out that he used the word retarded in a closed-door private meeting. What the? Now I use a lot of very bad, vulgar language, maybe rather mild for some but bad for me, in the privacy of my own home and I would like to know what this has to do with anyone? Nothing. Just like Rahm Emanuel’s rather innocent albeit vulgar outburst.

Rush, on the other hand, used the word that so offended SP in public, as part of a public statement and, in my understanding, referring to specific groups of people, not in a general, satiric way. And SP? Nothing.

Now this ridiculous cartoon which is watched by whom? This is another case of Sarah Palin dragging something out into the public eye, going on about something that, if she hadn’t made the point of talking about it may never have been noticed or would probably be forgotten in about 10 minutes. It just goes to show that this is all about her and her desire for attention. Oh, and her desire to attack the Obama White House every single chance she can get about anything she can wrap her lips around.

Please help me out here…what’s this about Arkansas? Guess I haven’t heard the latest. Don’t tell me $$$arah has reared her empty head again? Say it ain’t so. How much did she rake in for this appearance? When is she going to go home (to whichever house currently has the property taxes paid) and take care of her kids? Damn – I can’t stand this kid-pimping!!!

My local newspaper here in California just called me today. They’ll be publishing my letter to the editor about Palin’s massive & morbid hypocricy. Also in today’s paper was an article written by Richard Cohen, a columnist for the Washington Post. Good! The politicians will all read it.

He starts out with a bang (quote): “It’s possible that Sarah Palin’s best quality is that she has none at all.” Towards the end he says (quote): “The lady from Alaska is a phony. She has sold out for money, quitting office so that she could cash in.” Also, (quote): “She is rich, famous for the metaphorical 15 minutes Andy Warhol allotted us all and, elbows swinging, is forging her way to oblivion.”

Interesting post, BodieP….”Retard is an ugly word–but in the end, it’s just a word…”

Words are symbols….a uniquely human adaptation. Everything we say is a symbolic mirror image of our thoughts. We in good measure create our reality with words. Do “existential” or “epiphany” or “ignominious” or a million other “things” really exist if we don’t have a symbol (word) for it? The sheer symbolic nature of words can best be seen in the example of diverse languages…..A word considered obscene in a language that you are not familiar with means nothing to you.

The crux of the problem is that culture defines which words (symbols) are vulgar, obscene, hurtful, or politically incorrect which in turn gives these words power in a real way beyond symbolic. That power goes right to the heart of an individual’s internal reality (complete with emotions, self-esteem, and view of the world). So, the school yard rhyme “sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never harm me” is patently false.

Words are powerful. Words can hurt. Words can divide a country. Sarah Palin is very adept in using words to do just that, as we all know.

So, we come back to the crux of the problem of who in the culture gets to decide which words (symbols) should be considered “bad” and “banned”…..The anger against Palin in her “word policing” is that many people feel that she has not established a legitimate or moral right for her position as the spokesperson for the word “retard.” In fact, many are put off not only by her hypocrisy with respect to Limbaugh (“satire”) but also her sanctimonious attitude that she is somehow in possession of the Moral Rules of the Universe regarding the word “retard” simply because she has borne a child with Down’s Syndrome. Further, her crusade against the word “retard” is inextricably mixed up with a nasty and disingenuous political agenda she has against the Obama administration, in general, and Rahm Emanuel, in particular.

Therefore…..although calling public attention to the demeaning and hurtful word “retard” in society is a laudable and worthy goal, Palin actually does more harm to the cause when she brays her outrage over the airwaves. How has society reacted? Well…..I have seen the word “retard” used more in the last few days than I have in the last few years.

Heidi, she spoke at a GOP meeting in Arkansas. There were many unsold seats despite the GOP dropping the price in an unsuccessful effort to sell more tickets. I think the final prices was $20, which someone said was $95 too much, lol. She also made a stupid, childish comment about twitter, of all things, calling it a “little twittering thing”. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/02/17/politics/main6215033.shtml

Now that her word salad includes so many childlike terms, like hopey and twittering thing, I think I shall call her Babble Baby.

It’s kinda…sad, actually…that Palin can’t see the light on this. Sad because this word war should never have been started, least of all by her. She’s simply incapable of making a rational point without her demented ideology making a laughing stock of the topic – doing even greater damage. No amount of money can teach a person grace.

Lani – thanks (I think!) I cringed while reading the whole story, including SP’s juvenile “twittering” comment. I love the ‘word salad’ analogy. Remember the other day when a regular here at AKM said, “Yeah, and the crusty croutons will be in Palin’s audience”. HAH!

In my imagination, I try to envision $$$arah somehow uttering some coherent words (with real thoughts behind them!), but they always end up in a blender set on “puree”.

$20 bucks/ticket, huh, and that was “$95 too much”? And they had to pull the black drapes over the vast area of unsold seats? Oh, this is getting really, really rich. It’s beyond my wildest dreams! It’s like watching a slow-motion video of a huge building implode, but now it’s been switched to fast forward. It reminds me of a bad comedian in a off-strip Vegas lounge show, with customers leaving their drinks behind just to get the hell out.

Babble Baby – I like that. Babble Baby Barbie. Babbling Buffoon. I could go on and on. Thanks again for the link, Lani.

I shudder to think at the sheer magnitude of the millions of person-hours needlessly invested in this Palin topic. But in a way, not really wasted. I think all of us here are helping to accelerate America’s eye-opening to SP’s divisive venom. I’m sincerely hoping that she has, de facto, pointed us more clearly in the direction we’d love to see our country take. In other words, SHE is not what this country needs or wants, but we’ll be eagerly and carefully looking elsewhere for leadership.

Although they gave me red hair on the show, I am really a blonde. I also wore a red wig for my role in ” Smudge” but I was a blonde in “Life Goes On”. I guess former Governor Palin does not have a sense of humor. I thought the line “I am the daughter of the former governor of Alaska” was very funny. I think the word is “sarcasm”.

In my family we think laughing is good. My parents raised me to have a sense of humor and to live a normal life. My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes.”

I just read Andrea’s resume. Her parents are one of the group I greatly admire. As her resume states they were told to just put her in an institution and “forget her”. That is how things were done then. But they and a small group of other parents refused and taught the education community that they were all wrong. It is because of parents like hers that all children with Down Syndrome have a chance to live a normal life with early, intensive intervention. They are my heroes.

    http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/18/family-guy-voice-actor-says-palin-does-not-have-a-sense-of-humor/

quote: I’m from Texas, and I consider myself a conservative, but I’m really beginning to be annoyed by Sara Palin. As I hope is true with most folks, I have a special place in my heart for folks with Down syndrome. They are challenged, and day-by-day, they meet that challenge. I am quite impressed by the “young” lady who performed in the Family Guy episode. And I am equally tired of Ms. Palin using Down syndrome as a political gesture. I’m tired of her sound bites, her “folksy” manner, and her self-serving references to her family. Right now, I’m just trying to laugh, as Ms. Friedman is able to.
