CPAC – The Invasion of the “Loons?”

loon

Well, the CPAC straw poll results are in, and guess who’s going on the hay ride?

I’ll give you a hint. Remember how Sarah Palin just said, in Arkansas that the Tea Party crowd “have to pick a party?”

Well, take a typical Tea Partier, remove the racism, and the ignorance, and the psychopathology, and the bad spelling. Leave in the fiscal conservatism, the constitution, and right to life, and what do you have?

The winner of this year’s CPAC straw poll!

Presenting their analysis on the results is the conservative blog “Race for 2012″
(drum roll please….. and no it’s not Palin. Remember, I said REMOVE the ignorance.)

Here’s [sic] the numbers: Ron Paul wins almost a third of the vote, crushing the establishment candidates. There were 2,395 people who cast ballots — over six hundred more than last year. (snip)

Ron Paul – 31%
Mitt Romney – 22%
Sarah Palin – 7%
Tim Pawlenty – 6%
Mike Pence – 5%
Newt Gingrich -4%
Mike Huckabee – 4%
Mitch Daniels – 2%
Rick Santorum – 2%
John Thune – 2%
Haley Barbour – 1%
Other – 5%
Undecided – 6%

Ron Paul has ended Mitt Romney’s three-year run as conservatives’ favorite for president, taking 31 percent of the vote in the Conservative Political Action Conference’s annual straw poll.

Results of this year’s poll were announced just as the crowd prepared for the conference’s keynote speaker, Fox News host Glenn Beck.

Yes, Republican Congressman Ron Paul has just knocked Captain Hair-do off the block. And it wasn’t a squeaker – he got pounded.  And Sarah Palin, whose showing last year was 11% has seen her support drop by a little more than 36%. It appears as though the Tea Partiers have indeed made their “choice” of party, but with the choice did NOT come their desire for Palin to hold office. Verrrry interesting.

But back to the analysis:

53% think we need a better field; 46% are fine with it. A majority here — people like me! — want more choices.

This means nothing, obviously. Ron Paul’s cult will follow him to the ends of the Earth.

But yes, we have been invaded by loons.

The big loser is Sarah Palin. The poll was almost 2/3 male, and Palin is more popular among men. Imagine if the poll was 50/50 — yeesh. Her absence this weekend was glaring.

So, let me get this straight. The people that paid good green money to come and bask in the glow of Glenn Beck – they’ve got it together. But the Ron Paul supporters? They’re loons. Got it.

And it would appear as though the “big loser” is in part responsible for the “invasion of the loons.” Yeesh, indeed.

Of course, Palin herself was nowhere to be seen at CPAC. She’s never been there to my knowledge. She’s been half-committing and completely committing for years now, but always finds a way to back out – usually at the last minute. Last year her giggly fan-base at Team Sarah were all a-flutter, cashing in their frequent flier miles, looking for deals on hotel rooms, and setting up carpools from hundreds of miles away, just to see Palin as the keynote speaker. Palin denied ever committing, leaving fans, and organizers slack-jawed and scrambling to find her replacement.

Undoubtedly eyebrows are raising across the GOP establishment, or as Palin would call them “the machine.” Apparently “the machine” has been recalibrated, and the …. Paul-bots (?) are celebrating. They will sleep tonight with visions of sugarplums and the demise of the Federal Reserve dancing in their overactive little heads.

Ron Paul? The Republicans treated him like their crazy uncle during the ’08 campaign – excluding him from debates and not letting him speak at conventions (even Michigan’s after he won that state’s primary), ridiculing him for his non-interventionist stance on foreign policy and his opposition to American Empire building, and lambasted him for his views on Israel – he believes we are doing Israel no favor by supporting them, and that we are not acting in our own interest either. After all that, they wanted us all to believe they WERE Ron Paul as soon as Obama was elected, and that somehow the same morons who cut taxes and increased spending were now magically the patron saints of fiscal responsibility – precisely the thing Paul attacked them for NOT being during the campaign. He was a better fit with the Libertarian party I think, but it will be interesting to see how the Republicans deal with him now that they’ve tried to claim so much of his platform as their own. Also note, the Teabags are working to unseat him in the Texas primaries.

After CPAC, I think it seems clear that Sarah is on the sidelines. And after the last week, I think she is significantly diminished…

Our problems are far bigger than Sarah, frankly. For the time being, the Republicans have the wind at their back. CPAC helped that. There is energy on their side. We have a lot of work to do to regain the initiative.

And the work is real. The states are in very serious financial straits. WIth all the jobs we created, we still have a net job loss of what – 8 million? – from the current recession. Health care is hanging by a thread – though the public option is showing some signs of life.

We have to get back to a position of controlling the narrative. The Republicans have managed to frustrate our agenda with no real power on their side. Are we really going to let them force us to fail so they can take back control? Really??

Of course 54% of the CPAC voters were between 18 and 25, so that probably explains the blowout. Young conservatives are not in any hurry to get behind a Romney or a Jindal (or a Palin). They are looking for somebody with new ideas, and whatever else you think of RP … the guy is unique.

12 – Lori in Los Angeles says…(Jeb Bush and Liz Cheney)

Lori, I agree with you that we WILL be seeing more of those two. They show up just enough to keep their names and faces familiar. Results of the CPAC poll will be bandied about on the talk shows for the next week or so, then we’ll see these two poping up all over the place. I don’t think Jeb will be put up for President, either by himself or others. I don’t think he has a broad base of support – look how most of the Repubs are pretending W. never existed. Liz, on the other hand, is this year’s replacement for Palin. Whether Dick Cheney is really respected and popular with the base, or if the Repubs are simply afraid of the power he wields and they don’t dare offend him – who knows? Sarah was last year’s *darling*, and might still be this year’s, had she learned when to keep her mouth shut instead of picking fights with those way out of her league.

Ron Paul does have a fairly large (and growing) group of followers. Some of his ideas have some merit, if not totally as he proposes, at least with some modification. It seems his ‘bots are not as loud and ill-informed as the teabagger, and I see his movement growing quietly, the MSM not paying much attention except to scoff at him as they did last year, then he’ll suddenly be front and center of the news. He made it so much further during the ’08 campaign than anyone could have imagined.

It is surprising that McCain was not on the list at all. I figured that his name would have been put up simply as a courtesy for all his years as a Senator, war hero, etc., etc. I think it is an indication that he is washed up with that crowd.

Tigerwine @50 – I think fear of *Mitt is a Mormon* issue during the last campaign was probably stronger that if would have been in other years, because if followed so soon after the Feds raided the compound in Texas and took all those children from their parents. Granted, it was a splinter group of the Mormons, but the connection was still there and I think it scared many off. Beck is a Mormon and that group strongly believes they will have one of their own in the POTUS chair, so I think we’ll see Beck start promoting Romney, now that he knows Palin’s star is fading. When someone like Beck actually recognizes her empty-headed-ness (is that a valid phrase?), you know that more of the average folks will begin to see it. With the followers that Beck, O’Reilly, and Limbaugh have, they could bring Sarah down faster than any of the other personal issues dogging her. Ron Paul supporters are not all warm and fuzzy, some of them are just as crazy as palins followers.Loading up their homes with guns for when the tanks start rolling down our streets!!! LOL I really had to laugh at that one.We all might need protection of our own from some of these( LOONS)
Romney is just to slick for me and Huckabee is a loser for sure. The republicans will have to do better than Bush and Cheney, she is indeed a war monger and IMO people are sick of war and want an end to it.

Not Fair!!! You gave no warning! Snortsnortsnort, I almost choked on my own laughter! “Ru Paul is Ron Paul’s wife…” awesome mischief!
I think that RuPaul would give a delighted snort as well!

AKM: I agree, the bird loon could not, in any way, be related to CPAC.
I would rather suggest that the origin of the “loons” to whom you are referring are the lunatics who come out for the full moon, or “luna, lune”…
After all that is from which this term for insane persons derives.

As for Jeb Bush coming out for 2012:
I have had a bet riding since he “retired”, that he would sit out 2008 because of this brother’s ratings, but would roar back into action for 2012.
I am quite sure I will not be the one paying for that fancy dinner.

Be aware that this man is very dangerous. He seems calm and sensible. Beneath that surface he is an intelligent, highly motivated doctrinaire in the field of education policy and separation o church ad state who has the inside track via the Bush family involvement in textbook publishing. Furthermore, he is bilingual, married to a Latina.
Research his appointments during his tenure and see his ideology.
His involvement in the 2000 election farce should require no reminders.
The mere thought of Bush and Cheney make me ill.

Re#47: Imagine what Obama could accomplish if he wasn’t a pansy and could keep his own party in line. Here’s what should have happened: during the healthcare debate he should have called the Democratic caucus into a private meeting and let be known that if they opposed him that they’d lose ALL funding for their re-election, or that he’d actively work to find a primary opponent that wouldn’t stab him in the back. Instead he let his chance pass by and now we see that the GOP, wrong-headed though they are, are the only ones in DC with any cojones.

from the diagonal@57, typos notwithstanding your last paragraph is spot on.

I think Jeb’s going to be the next generation puppetmaster pulling the strings rather than run himself though I do not wish to see you have to pay for that dinner!

Jeb Bush Jr. (did we know there was a Jr.?) is now the most vocal supporter of Marco Rubio for the Fla. senate seat. Isn’t that sweet? Sticking up for his Godbrother like that.

The Senior Jeb Bush’s hands were all over Marco Rubio’s picks for the Florida Tax and Budget Reform Commission a couple years back. And what did his picks come up with and champion as Tax and Budget Reform? Taking a hatchet to the idea of separation of church and state so we could begin to funnel state money into church-sponsored schools and faith-based charitable programs.

The move was calculated – the Tax and Budget Reform Commission is convened every 10 (or was it 20?) years and has the power to put measures directly on the ballot for Floridians to vote for (or against). Jeb tried to get similar stuff passed while Gov., and either the legislature blocked it or some got challenged by the state supreme court and was ruled unconstitutional. So Jeb, through Marco Rubio, decided to do an end run around the legislative process for his pet education policies, all while co-opting the TBRC and effectively making it impossible for them to do the actual job they were convened for – reforming our tax policies and coming up with excellent new budget suggestions.

So I have no doubt that, if elected (and let’s hope this stays a big IF), Marco Rubio would be in there from Day One sponsoring educational reform measures that would seek to do same – and the Bush family and the corporate sponsors of their foundations would be the benefactors of that legislation.

The actual young people of Florida? Not so much. Unless they are already going to The Right Kind of Schools.

Reelcanajun: I’m with you on the loons, and wish I could come with you on one of your morning canoe trips. (I’m no lily-dipper!) Along with all you say, loonsare BEAUTIFUL. There is an Alaskan Native story that tells of how Raven and Loon were once both pure white, got tired of always being mistaken for snowbanks, so agreed to design each other’s new plumage. Raven did a wonderful design for Loon (because he was Raven and could!), but Loon, lacking Raven’s innate flair, just gave him the all-over basic black design. Hearing loons cry at first light on a misty morning is one of the best sounds on earth.

Loving all that nature has to offer, loons are a part of our great inheritance. I hear different sounds in the morning, but I envy your being able to hear the cry through the mist off the lake. When the woods around me were clear-cut for development, Canada geese would land on the roof and peck at my bedroom window. I found it immensely consoling and fascinating.

and we need to let people know about him.
Mag the Mick and MinNJ: as I told AKM, the winged loon has nothing to do with the “loon” abbreviation of lunatic… be it the old description of an insane person, or the more recent description of members of CPAC!

Can’t help but laugh to see Rick Santorum’s name on that list… he lost his Senate seat to a guy whose sole attribute continues to be his father’s name. He’s also a tax scofflaw and an arrogant misogynist. After looking at all those names I have to wonder if those grumpy old poops who call themselves conservatives haven’t hit the bottom of the barrel.

I think our dear President Obama ought to take a few lessons from Franklin Roosevelt.

Roosevelt was dignified, YET he didn’t let anyone give him any shi+.

He told them what needed to be done, and he did it.

Barack needs to take charge, and tell them what he’s going to do. Basically we are at war. And he has a job to do. ‘Nuf said.

Getting 7% must have been a real bummer for the great star of her own running soap opera. I can almost feel the punch in the stomach she must have experienced. There isn’t any way she can dispute the figures, can’t tweet away the facts this time. How is she going to parse this so that she is the real winner?
“I would have won hands down if I would have been there. also.”
But, she can take heart that at least she beat “undecided” by 1 point.
All those puff pieces that her handlers paid writers to pen for her the previous week didn’t seem to sway the CPACers. Who woulda thunk it?
