Davis-Palin Iron Dog Team Scratches

For those following the 2000 mile Iron Dog snowmachine race, it seems like the most famous pair of racers has scratched.

Iron Dog development director Heidi Griffin said the injury happened about 30 miles past the checkpoint Sunday night, and the racers were returning to the checkpoint.

She did not know the nature of Davis’ injury and expected further updates later Monday.

Davis, 50, is tied with John Faeo as the winningest driver in race history with seven victories. Partner Palin, 45, has four titles. But since their 2007 victory, the duo has had trouble. They finished sixth last year, the worst result in Davis’ 20 Iron Dog finishes.

The team has suffered injury before, most famously when Todd Palin finished the last 400 miles of the race with a broken arm.  Davis has won seven previous Iron Dogs.

The injury occured near Puntilla Lake in The Alaska Range.  The nature of Davis’ injuries are not known.

Details and updates can be found at the Anchorage Daily News.

Agree with 9-LisaB, even if you’re not a fan, it still takes a big pair of cajones to race the irondog, and as a competitor, you never wish badluck on a fellow competitor. Nothing wrong with outracing them, but DNF due to injury just sucks.

While I hope it’s nothing serious and I truly do wish an easy recovery from any injury that may have incurred , the truth is we’ve all come to a place where we mistrust anything that has to do with the Palins. If Sarah twittered that she was enjoying a wonderful Tuesday, I’d go to my own calendar to see if it really is Tuesday.

Sure, maybe there was an injury but I’m going with the idea that :

They were running so far behind that they knew they wouldn’t even get close to placing. The unraveling grand illusion of the Perfect Palin Family couldn’t suffer another disaster so Todd convinced Davis to just pack it in. Perhaps the injury was slight but enough to use it as an excuse.

I agree the timing is interesting considering the blog news of the day but I’m wondering if $P could have even reached him by cell phone with a screeching, ” Get Home Now !”

If I could do that ” one raised eyebrow ” thing, I’d be doing it. I don’t trust anything coming from that crazy compound.

Really, these guys have a long record of guts and stamina in this race. Speculating that they would now be quitters is way out there, when there is not a shred of evidence that this is anything but an injury.

Interesting tid-bit…….Virginia GOP delegate Bob Marshall claims that “disabled children are God’s punishment to women who have aborted their first pregnancy.”

Of course she won’t respond to this and even if she does, it will be a statement with tortured logic (and syntax). But how interesting that the whole righteous crusade she is conducting to protect any and all special needs children has resulted in this conundrum. Does she stand up for special needs groups and denounce this claim from Marshall? Does she stay silent and hope no-one notices? What does this say about her own special needs baby? Is this an indictment on Queen Sarah from the Almighty about a *gasp* previous secret abortion? Will the Palinbots make the connection, see the indirect smear against their Queen and spring into action?

It’s fun to speculate =) Once again, if only Palin WOULD sit down and shut up, she would save herself so many headaches!

Hope Mr. Davis is OK, but it’s kind of a relief that we won’t have to hear how Todd and Sarah are doing at the finish.

I could not believe the idiocy coming out of Virginia today – gays can be disqualified for state jobs because they are gay and can be asked that question? I thought there were federal laws against that, but it’s only state by state? Argh. And the whole thing about special needs children being a punishment for having had an abortion. That man deserves to be run out of office. I hope the women in his state wake up and speak out and lead the vote against him. And the worst is that he says all that’s in the Bible. I don’t know what Bible he was reading but someone needs to send him a new one – his is defective.

  41. 41
    AnneNo Gravatar says:

For the guy who said the crap about special needs and abortion, here is my 2 cents. All of the pro-life men should be told that if they could get their way and abortion laws would change in their favor, then NEW laws would also be enacted stating that men could ONLY engage in sex to impregnante women, in order to avoid any unwanted pregnancies.

    That should shut them up!

    mommomNo Gravatar says:

I hope Mr Davis is ok,as well as everyone else on the trail, but I have to qualify that with my feelings about the race.I feel the same about snow machines as I do about jet skis-they are a useful tool that has been taken over as a toy,and now they pollute the air ,our ears, and wildlife. Racing a snow machine takes stamina, strength, and craftiness,I am sure, but the Iditarod captivates me.The melding of man and his dogs, the care and training, the sheer strength of will.

I just dont care about the Iron Dog in the same way I dont care about Nascar. Its a machine.

    But those sled dogs !!

  43. 43
    GasmanNo Gravatar says:

That Virginia State Delegate Bob Marshall of Manasas is a moron is beyond dispute. I would like him to provide any data supporting his contention that “The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically.” I am willing to bet that he pulled that one right out of his big fat manASSas.

If Marshall’s theory has any credibility, how does he explain Trig Palin? Palin had no abortions. Was this God’s “judgement” upon Palin’s bid for VPOTUS? Is God a liberal after all? Is Marshall claiming that all such births are God’s way of punishing mothers who have strayed? Is God’s aim really that bad? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate for God to “smite through the loins” (Deu. 33:11, KJV) any such offending woman? Would it be right for any human to punish a child with an immutable life sentence because of some indiscretion of their mother? If punishment of children for the sins of the parents is OK, can I give Marshall’s children a great big dope slap because he is an imbecile? What about dad? What kind of punishment do kids get because of dad’s screw-ups? Is anyone going to claim that Marshall IS NOT an A$$HAT?

Former Partial Governor Palin, do you have any thoughts on this man besmirching your honor?

As for Davis quitting so suddenly, could it have anything to do with Gryphen’s post today? It seems that team Palin is going to be furiously circling their wagons. Could Todd simply have had a family “emergency” to attend to? I still haven’t heard the nature of this injury. I definitely think that it is a ear injury, just not Davis’ ear.

Don’t know if it was just a joke, but I read somewhere else, that Mr. Davis was supposed to speak on an Alaska radio show. The speculation was that if his injury was so bad, how could he hop over to a radio studio?

Barring that, I do feel bad for anyone who puts the time, money and energy into a race and it’s ruined like that. Same kind of feeling when the Olympic skaters do so well, then fall.

  49. 49
    GhostbusterTXNo Gravatar says:

Just read the ADN article –
“Davis, 51, said a combination of problems put the duo out of contention and, eventually, out of the race. A crash broke the handlebars on Davis’ Arctic Cat snowmobile as well as some springs. His back, which was sore at the start, worsened steadily.

” ‘It was an accumulation of stuff,’ Davis said by phone. ‘It just wasn’t going our way. We probably could have slugged it out with the kids, but when you’re 140 miles behind and a couple of hours down, you wonder if it’s worth it.’ ”

So no, it wasn’t an accident injury that put them out of contention. In the quote above Davis admits he *could* have finished the race – if he really wanted to. But they were losing, so they quit.

  50. 50

    Iquiterod!!! Ibrokeabar!! Ihurtaback!!

I’m sure ol’ Grand dad had some input, as well, too. Also.

When they got caught cheating that last time, I read that they replaced a broken part instead of repairing it. He probably had a brandy new handlebar, but couldn’t use it this time.

Quitters. Both. And that whole thing is an insult to the Dog race and the environment.
