Open Thread – Thursday Moose

briansnos1

Well, we haven’t had a moose sighting here at Mudflats Central in quite some time. So, here’s a picture from this past summer. Ah….green. I remember that color.

Don’t forget to tune in to The Shannyn Moore Show on KUDO 1080am between 11am and 2pm weekdays. Today in the third hour I’ll be Shannyn’s guest for our weekly conversation “Thursdays in the Mud” when we talk about the news of the day and solve the world’s problems. Your calls are always welcomed at 907-569-1080.

Brian! What a noble beast! and he’s got his eye on things, also, too. I find him Most Reassuring.

and conversations with Our AKM and Our Shannyn, who have their eyes and ears on all kinds of interesting things, you betcha! and quite a wonderful way with words, also. Too.

Speaking of a wonderful way with words (and being so fed up with all things Paylin…) March 2 is the birthday of the late, great Dr. Seuss, of blessed memory. For all of you lovers of reading, you players with words, you caretakers of children, I invite you to Join the celebration of Read Across America. Actually, I think we could make it Read Across the World, with the far-flung denizens of teh Mudflats. Now that’s a Happy Thought of Hope and Change, don’t you agree?

    Read Across America Poem

You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild,
To pick up a book and read with a child.
You’re never too busy, too cool, or too hot,
To pick up a book and share what you’ve got.

In schools and communities, Let’s gather around,
Let’s pick up a book, Let’s pass it around.

There are kids all around you, Kids who will need
Someone to hug, Someone to read.

Come join us March 2nd Your own special way
And make this America ‘s Read to Kids Day.

I hope you all find time to read something “just because you want to” today, and everyday. You’re at teh Mudflats, so chances are you already have.

    Have a delightful day, friends.

Regarding Stapleton’s resignation, this week. It occurs to me that Palin resigned almost a year ago. Did she require a spokesperson after jumping the ship of state?

What a dignified looking gent Brian is! He looks so serene, without a care in the world.

This link for Geoff Dunne’s latest article was posted on the OT late last evening. Not too many comments yet, so I thought I’d post it again. It is the most scathing commentary on Meg Stapleton that I’ve read so far. Our own AKM is mentioned several times – in a very positive way, of course!

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/geoffrey-dunn/meg-stapleton-and-the-lie_b_475885.html

HonestyInGov mentioned yesterday that Ann Strongheart was going to be on Shannyn’s show today – is that still a go and if so, do you know what time frame?

Rep. Anthony Wiener was fantastic yesterday, so if anyone missed it, check out the video clip on MSNBC’s website. He has been one of the most vocal proponents of health care reform, certainly seems better informed than most…….yet he is NOT being allowed to participate in the summit today……..what’s with that?

Keith Olbermann’s special commentary last evening was heart-breaking and if anyone watching it remained dry-eyed, I would be surprised. Sadly, those who really needed to hear it, won’t hear it. Having gone through the *death panel* sessions (or as KO calls them life panels) a few months ago, I know the importance of them and I urge everyone to talk with their families and make decisions while everyone is more mentally and emotionally able to deal with this critical (but necessary) ordeal.

Great Granny @ 4 – Yes I did see KO, and yes, had to run for the kleenex! It was a very moving commentary, and one I hope all Mudflatters have a chance to see. We were lucky to have as our family physician the president of the GA Medical Asso, who, as a matter of course advised us when my husband died of pancreatic cancer. No charge, that I know of. Don’t know why there has to be an extra charge – isn’t that what you are paying doctors for?

My newest best friend is Anthony Weiner. He was magnificent yesterday – and thanks to the Rep from Oregon for ceding his time to him!

Moose! Green! Where??? Two feet of snow in one night. Had a good neighbor with a small tractor getting everyone on our street out. No snow plows had been out for hours. Then Scott came back after the plows went by to clean out the driveways again!

Great Granny!!! Yes, I watched Keith Olbermann’s commentary. WOW! I hope and pray his father comes through. Life Panels indeed. Not DEATH PANELS!

Tigerwine: If a person wants to talk to a Doctor (while more or less healthy) about end of life issues and to have it paid by insurance, then the Doc has to put it in his paperwork.

Bummer but that’s the rule. The Docs can get in trouble otherwise.

the problem i have with the current conversation about palin is that instead of figuring out a reasonable method to rise to power and maintain some level of motherly role – palin creates a psychotic atmosphere around her children that causes even the least motherly of us (that would be me) serious consternation about the emotional state of those very children.

if we forget for the moment that palin is a complete horse’s ass and just look at the concept of a woman’s rise to power out of nowhere and how the public receives that notion — palin is that woman. my problem with her is she failed to collect the necessary knowledge and wisdom along the way…….and choose poorly the people to whom she would take counsel.

the result? a national conversation about the welfare of her children and well founded alarm that the ultimate position of power on this planet was casually offered to a woman with no ability to respect that position or wield it in a safe and cogent manner.

someone has to be the adult in this situation. mccain was that adult and he failed miserably. now this ragtag group of bloggers and their readership have invested untold hours of time and energy to document his unforgivable error and lay the groundwork to insure this choice is never made again – not only for the dignity of the united states office of the presidency – but for the common good of this planet.

the next step is to focus the national spotlight on women that HAVE collected the knowledge and wisdom, HAVE the emotional balance and fortitude to compete with dignity and foresight………and to whom it is an honor and distinct pleasure to listen to the words and ideas coming from that person’s own mind and those of her trusted advisors.

there are men and women that fit this notion. we know this because we witnessed one such political rise in obama’s campaign and administration. there are excellent candidates for the office of the presidency.

the public should not be put in the position to moan in desperation and have a national wringing of hands every time someone comes to the forefront with an ill-conceived plan to be “powerful”……….we need to have the olympians of politics rise up and be accounted for.

and so it goes. palin is a crystal clear example of what happens when a person is launched into the stratosphere of politics with absolutely no talent for flying.

the important lesson is that she did not launch her own ship — many many many people are responsible for this truly stupid choice of a candidate. turn every rock and root out the culprits so that we know their names and know their depths of their complete and total lack of respect for the success of this country.

“IDAHO FALLS, ID—Speaking unto an audience of anti-immigration advocates, global-warming deniers, and members of the Tea Party Nation, former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin gave forth utterances Monday that reportedly opened the sixth seal of the Book of the Apocalypse.

“Wow, it’s good to be here, just shootin’ the breeze with a bunch of real, hardworking Americans who love their freedom,” said Palin, her words echoing across the Idaho Falls Civic Auditorium as mighty tremors caused great unrest beneath the land and the sea. “So are the little guys like you and me gonna fight these Washington insiders with their big government agenda? I’ve been following the health care summit. My goodness – those Republicans are a bunch of whiny babies – all they want to do even in front of the cameras, is to obstruct and complain! POTUS has shown himself to be the educated gentleman that he is, yet some of the *analysts* are complaining that he is too professorial, arrogant, and lecturing them. What else should they expect when they act like schoolkids?

I had a quick note from Ann – she will be taping Shannyn’s TV show this evening……..she’s a bit nervous, but I’m sure she will do fine. GG was demanding her breakfast, so it was a short note and she didn’t mention the radio show, so I don’t know one way or another if she will also be on that one.

Until everything hit the fan yesterday with Meg’s resignation, I wasn’t aware of just how badly she was disliked – not just by Alaskans, but country-wide. A few ‘bots are defending she and Sarah on Geoff Dunn’s article, but not many compared to the negative ones.

  33. 35

Interestingly enough, one of the comments I remember making when he was running for president was that I always felt smarter and better informed after he talked. What they see as a negative thing (that he lectures), I see as something positive. I think there are more differences between democrats and republicans than any of us have really realized. One party wants to make policy based on gathering and evaluating all the information, while the other wants to continue on based on their own narrow and often uninformed agenda.

The other thing that still bothers me is that the republicans just out and out lie about everything and they get a pass on it except from people like Maddow and Olberman and Ed Schultz and some of our more vocal people in the House and Senate. Grayson and Weiner and a few others are my new heroes.

Anh “Joseph” Cao, the only Republican health care supporter, is struggling to maintain financial support. Get Breaking News Alerts
    Share
Comments 168 WASHINGTON — The lone Republican lawmaker to support Democratic health care legislation has seen his fundraising drop by nearly 40 percent since his vote, and he is quickly burning through a dwindling bank account after resorting to a costly national fundraising operation.

Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao, the unlikely congressman from New Orleans, is facing the perils of bipartisanship unlike any other lawmaker in Washington – trying to please a heavily Democratic constituency while relying on core conservatives for money to fuel his campaign.

Although Republican leaders have continued supporting Cao with money from their campaign committees despite his health care position, the conservative donors he’s courting around the country may not be so forgiving.

A Vietnamese-American, Cao (pronounced gow) won his seat in 2008 even as President Barack Obama took 75 percent of the vote in the district that is 60 percent black. Like Louisiana’s Indian-American governor, Bobby Jindal, Cao was hailed as a next-generation Republican who could put a more diverse face on the party’s predominantly white image.

But Cao’s victory was unique. It came only after his Democratic opponent and predecessor, Rep. William Jefferson, was found with $90,000 in his freezer and indicted on bribery charges. Republicans acknowledge that Cao will have a tough time holding the seat.

Even in a favorable political climate for Republicans, Cao’s contributions have fallen sharply since he was alone among 178 GOP House members to vote for the health care bill on Nov. 7. He raised less than $250,000 during the three months surrounding the vote, compared with nearly $400,000 the previous quarter.

At the same time, he spent more than he raised – with nearly $9 of every $10 going to buy conservative donor databases, send solicitations and pay for consultants and other fundraising expenses, according to an Associated Press review of his campaign finance report.

There are no rules governing how much a candidate should spend on fundraising, but Cao’s ratio is unusually high, particularly for a sitting congressman.

Since starting his re-election campaign last year, at least $640,000 of the $874,602 Cao has reported spending has gone toward fundraising – about 75 percent. Instead of promoting him in the district, most of the money went to a network of conservative Washington-area consultants.

Story continues below Heading into the midterm election season, Cao had just $315,000 in the bank – a weak tally in an age when incumbents frequently stockpile $1 million or more. One of Cao’s two Democratic opponents, state Rep. Cedric Richmond, is gaining on him, with about $225,000 cash on hand, in part from self-financing.

In an interview with the AP, Cao acknowledged his contributions are down and fundraising expenses are eating up a large portion of them. But he said he expects his investment in direct-mail solicitations outside his district to start paying dividends.

“We use those organizations to build up a donor list, and obviously to do that requires a lot of outreach and mailing,” said Cao. “The cost is high in the beginning, but as you go through the campaign the returns will be a lot better.”

That may be wishful thinking. Cao’s network of fundraising consultants is led by a company called Base Connect, which has a track record of taking huge fees while sometimes leaving its candidates with little in return.

Cao has gone along with its strategy – casting himself as a Ronald Reagan conservative and a threat to the Democrats’ agenda. But he knows he can take the approach only so far without alienating voters hit hard by Hurricane Katrina. He said he put a stop to one early mailing because it was too strident. Base Connect did not respond to a request for comment.

“I have always stressed bipartisanship and that includes when we do campaign fundraising,” Cao said.

So, how well do you suppose Palin would handle being in PObama’s position today? Maybe this is a clue?

JUNEAU, Alaska — A couple of weeks before the Alaska legislature began this year’s session, a bipartisan group of state senators on a retreat a few hours from here invited Gov. Sarah Palin to join them. Accompanied by a retinue of advisers, she took a seat at one end of a conference table and listened passively as Gary Stevens, the president of the Alaska Senate, a former college history professor and a low-key Republican with a reputation for congeniality, expressed delight at her presence.

“Would the governor,” a smiling Stevens asked, “like to share some of her plans and proposals for the coming legislative session?”

Palin looked around the room and paused, according to several senators present. “I feel like you guys are always trying to put me on the spot,” she said finally, as the room became silent.

It is much better than those awful townhall meetings last summer. It also shows which of the elected officials have ACTUALLY READ the bills.

Senator “Browner” really doesn’t show me much. The only thing he brought to the table was a BIG NO. It is very obvious to me that he has not read the bill and if he did read it he does not understand a word of it.

A lot more people need to see these meetings and see just how uninformed their representatives are. Ann shouldn’t worry. She is with her friend Shannyn so She should be fine.
She should just relax…. we know Ann can handle anything.

Just a question…? Is anybody else having problems with the Mudflats pages loading sloooooowwwwly….? Since Monday I am having issues and sometimes it never does load all the comments completely.
I assume it is my puter… so I need to fix it on my end. Never was a problem before.

Is it just me or has Chicken Hawk 5 military deferments Cheney made a habit of heading to the hosp. on or about the day he’s caught in a big whopper–especially when there is proof backing the catch? While I truly hope he is not severely ill and wish him the best it just seems that attn: from his lies is always diverted to his “heart”. We need him around to remind us what absolute power corrupts looks/sounds like.

I’ve been watching it, too, and it’s pretty amazing. Dems and Repubs have raised some interesting and informative points, but the one thing they’ve done collectively is built an extraordinarily convincing argument for the one solution they won’t talk about – Single Payer. Nothing else will solve the problems; it’s obvious what will; we’re not going to talk about that.

I think John “Bonehead” Boehner hasn’t contributed anything to the conversation other than his usual useless yakking points.

“When the NRA invites a fear-mongering nutjob like Palin to headline their event, it really speaks volumes about where the leadership of this organization has gone – down the toliet. Palin belongs in a mental institution, not in front a podium.”

Let it be said here and now that all praise goes to Snoskred who launched the Forum, and whose diligent attention keeps it going. Also, too, the Administrators and Moderators without whom the continuation of the Forum would not be possible.

You guys ROCK! Thanks for doing what you do and being important to so many people.

GA Peach @ 52, $P headlining the NRA’s annual meeting? Now there’s a Chilling Thought, and a Situation that bears Careful Watching, also. Too. You betcha. *shudder*

No offense to responsible gun owners. I Am one. I learned safety from my daddy, who learned from his daddy , and unto the generations. I was a “marksman” with a rifle at 10 years old, but only shot/shoot targets and cans. Used to enjoy bow and arrow back then, too, big old paper targets stuck on hay bales in the summer sunshine.

Hunters and fisherfolk in my family, and I Am an omnivore, but I’m no hunter nor fisher myself. I could pull the trigger in a couple of circumstances. (I don’t live in town, but in a forest “in the country.”)

There was that dark day long ago when a stray dog killed our yard cat (Mr. Pibbs, of blessed memory), but it was done before I could have fired a shot. He didn’t suffer long, but I was horrified then, and am still haunted by the memory of the cat we loved for many years. I sat in the yard all day with my (registered) gun and kept watch, but the dog never came around again. I would have pulled the trigger.

There is also an Enormous (possibly rabid) raccoon that has picked off our chickens one by one, no matter how much we’ve reinforced the hen-house. Big ole thing, and wary of the live traps we set early on. I would shoot it, given the opportunity… Teh flock has, er, had the run of the (fenced) “back yard” during the day, but roosted in their henhouse overnight. Too many predators in teh dark: raccoons, possums, dogs, coyotes, foxes…. Just about time for new chicks…

    oops, rambling…

I exercise my right to bear arms, but acknowledge the responsibilities that ensue, as do many gun owners. Mr$. Paylin’s divisive, racist, rile-’em-up (albeit “Free”) speech and tea bagging gun nuts…I’m not the only one with my eye on them.

MonaLisa (inCT), halibut nunchucks? That would surely relieve some stress. Talk about a major smackdown! I bet your home is sparkling clean by now. What a productive and healthy way to channel your , um… frustration …with Health Care Reform.

I have a halibut pic I saved from mudflats on Dec. 4, probably from austintx, but no photo account to link here. *waving to Irishgirl, just for the halibut* :)

finally getting to watch news programs covering today’s Health Care discussion with great interest as I have a job offer..at almost double my present salary ( when you’ve been unemployed for 5 months, you don’t hold out for more…1 yr on the job now) . Unforutnately, the offer doesn’t have health Ins… I could afford to buy individual, but am VERY leery about going for it due to oldest daughter medical.. I have the feeling I’m gonna stay where I’m at due to worrying about coverage for her…. bad enough I’m in Calif and watching the proposed rates going up.. until the “pre-existing condition” bit becomes law… kinda sucks; but I could never live with myself if I let money jepordize being able to provide medical coverage for my kids…oh…WHY didn’t they just do the reconcilation sooner !! :(

I’d also like to suggest that every single one of them (in both houses of Congress) take a ‘blood oath’ that whatever bill they finally present to POTUS (as elected representative of the people of our Nation), is one they would have ZERO reservations about insisting is the A+++ BEST plan *for* their mother, brother-in-law, lady down the street, mail carrier, the guy behind them in the checkout at Big Box Store, the woman in the shelter, the veteran, the homeless family, the gal just starting her own business, the octogenarian homesteader, the kid in foster care, the fellow just laid off from his job of 18-years, the newly arrived immigrant, the least amongst us, AND the greatest amongst us; a plan they would recommend, with NO hesitation, to *e v e r y* single person they meet as the absolute BEST. If they *can’t* (or won’t) do that, I’d say their ‘plan’ isn’t worth a mouse’s poot in a hurricane … and they’ve done nothing but waste everyone’s time. My time is much too valuable to me, for them to be pharting it off. My health is even more so.

You will want to catch clips of Jon Stewart tonight. About the first half of the Show he covered the Health Care Summit today.
McCain tried to get his ‘ talking points ‘ going and was acting like a 12 yo Child. Mccain had his snarky grin going as well. The President was not impressed.
He had a very serious look on his face and paraphrasing told John… ” The Election is over John “. ( OUCCHHH!!… that’s gonna hurt and leave a mark )

Cantor had the same smarmy 12 yo childish smirk on his face and grinning for the cameras with his talking points. The President was having none of it though.
It sure seemed like he was the ONLY Adult in the room with these RePugs.
