Open Thread – Grass Roots Fundraiser

shannynmoore

Come to Cafe del Mundo tonight from 5:30-7:00pm to support progressive radio in Anchorage!  Donations will be used to get the word out to the population at large that Alaska talk radio is not relegated to the “libruls are destroyin’ Amurrica” crowd that populates (ironically) the left side of the dial.  Let’s help The Shannyn Moore Show roll out bumper stickers, advertising, and all those incidentals that will let people know where to go for smart, funny, thought-provoking talk.

I am honored that Shannyn shares one of her 15 hours a week with me for “Thursdays in the Mud” and I’ve proudly added my name as a co-host of this event.  So stop by after work, meet some great people, thank Shannyn for her outstanding work, grab a little something to eat, and toss whatever financial support you can to Anchorage’s most talented radio host.  Let’s face it.  You know who’s going to be keeping you sane this election season.

If you’re a business, and you want to advertise on Alaska’s fastest-growing radio show, email shannynmoore(at)gmail(dot)com.  And if you can’t make it to Cafe del Mundo, but want to help, you can visit Shannyn’s blog and click the “Donate” button on the top of the side bar.

[And remember all open threads remain active for 24 hours for links, conversation and comments that are off topic to other posts.  Thanks!]

    News about HealthCare….
Well….Last week the two CA Senators signed that Letter and the story then was also reporting that Blue Cross/Shield had announced plans to raise Insurance Premiums by 39% this year. It was Boxer or Feinstein that said there announcement was exactly the reason WHY they needed to sign the letter.

I was just getting off work this morning and turned on the local morning TV.
Subject : Healthcare—-The story they reported on didn’t go into any details but I assume there may be some more Online stories as details come out.
This mornings News Story said the CA Attorney General, Jerry Brown, has requested or subpoenaed some of the larger Insurance Companies, like Aetna , Anthem Blue Cross, Wellpoint, { about 7 of the largest ones } and told them to turn over files to his office. They didn’t go into ‘ detail ‘ as to the specifics of the files but you know he wants info about their rates or profits.
Why else would the State Attorney General be on their case..?

Maybe some of the other States Attorney Generals will follow his lead as well and start investigations. Lets hope it snowballs.

Oh, sweet Jeebus on a popsicle stick. Can you believe the concern trolling here? Hey John, want to know why there was a carve-out for Connecticut? Why don’t you ask your bestest buddy, Lieberman, who hemmed and hawed his support in order to get on TV as much as possible. Are you seriously blaming Obama for the lack of change in the way the Senate must do business? Why don’t you look in the mirror and ask yourself how much your party has contributed to that change.

Frankly, responding to McCain’s concern trolling is laughable. Which is why Obama’s response is the only way to do so.

OBAMA: Let me just make this point, John, because we are not campaigning anymore.

McCAIN: I’m reminded of that every day.

OBAMA: So we can spend the remainder of the time with our respective talking points going back and forth, we were supposed to be talking about insurance reform. Obviously I’m sure that Harry Reid and Chris Dodd and others who went through an exhaustive process through both the House and the Senate with the most hearings, the most debates on the floor, the longest markup in 22 years on each of these bills, will have a response for you. My concern is, if we do that, we are essentially back on Fox News and MSNBC on the split screen. My hope would be is that we can just focus on the issues about how we get a bill done.

Suh-nap! Poor Grampy could only sputter at that point.

OK…. My curiosity got the best of me about my earlier comment about
CA Attorney General and the Insurance Companies. Here is an actual Press Release from his Office as well as a story posted on Huffpo.
    ————————
“Brown Subpoenas Health Plans over Claims Denials and Rate Hikes”

Los Angeles-Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr., who has an ongoing investigation into possibly illegal practices by some California health insurers, today subpoenaed financial records and other documents from California’s seven largest health insurance companies.
“We have been looking at these companies for a number of months and are very concerned that some of them are unjustly raising premiums and denying payment of legitimate claims,” Brown said. “Not only are the rate increases devastating to Californians strapped by the economy, but in some cases, they are possibly illegal.”
“Our best attorneys are going to get to the bottom of this, and where we find violations of California’s unfair business laws, we intend to stop them,” Brown added.

Brown subpoenaed records from Aetna Health, Anthem Blue Cross, CIGNA, Health Net, Blue Shield of California, Kaiser Permanente and PacifiCare.

Is Celtic Diva’s Blue Oasis related to the SS Palin?

I heard the emails came back in December or November, but haven’t seen them and it’s 3 months later…..waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy overdue.

Everytime I got to her site and try to look for the SOA emails her reader’s paid over $5,000 to get I don’t see them posted. Does anyone know if they’ve been released or their status? I probably shouldn’t be posting this here, but that site is difficult to post on and I think this awesome site and hers shares some of the same readers.

I remember her saying she got a refund, but my Paypal hasn’t been credited for any amount so I’m not sure.

Diva if you read this please just release the emails…this is hurting your credibility.

Linda has already made a very detailed post about all this on her blog, but I will pass on your concerns to her. Many of the emails came back with large portions redacted. AKM

Celtic Diva’s site is easy to post on once you sign up – and she also has an email address where you can contact her directly. CD was overwhelmed with pages of information needing to be sorted and catalogued when she was presented with her data.

I do not agree that CD has a credibility problem – she is thorough, dedicated and very busy! She is a wonderful, honest and big-hearted person who has a very full life outside of blogging. Try contacting her directly through email and ask for a status update to be posted soon!

    aha #12:

I have the same concern. I have asked her, on her site, a couple of times recently. She has posted, by the way, about the refund she got, which was pretty substantial. My recollection is that the final cost was around $2000. She is still in the process of trying to get further emails so there will probably be further expense.

She has only responded by saying something will be coming soon. I have to assume there is simply nothing of consequence in the emails she received. In fairness, she also indicated that many of the emails she received were redacted – much more so than the NBC emails. This heavy editing may have been intentional. I find it easy to believe that the administration might have taken her FOIA request personally.

I think we can take it on faith that she is not in any way aligned with the SS Palin, though! She is totally passionate about this, by all indications I have ever seen.

But it is time for a clear explanation of what she got, what else might be coming, and why it has been 3 months with almost no emails released…

School is closed (!) and I am sitting in my nice warm, cozy flannel pants and fuzzy socks, enjoying this unexpected day of freedom.

Looks like there’s close to 2 feet of snow on the back patio and, although the radar shows otherwise, it’s still coming down pretty hard. It’s sticking to everything and it looks sooooo pretty (especially since I don’t have to go outside in it) !!! Actually, at some point today or tomorrow I probably will have to dig my way across the yard to the bird feeder and clean it off so my feathered neighbors can have a snack. I KNEW I should have moved the feeder to the edge of the patio last fall!

I was smart enought to stop at the library and the grocery store yesterday on the way home from work so I have books to read and ingredients for a yummy bowl of beef veggie soup.

Apparently, the storm did NOT get the memo that the heaviest of the snow was supposed to have ended here in Roch hours ago. It’s still coming down like crazy and doesn’t look like it’s stopping any time soon. It’s gone from light flurries of the really fine snowflake early this morning to lots of bigger flakes this afternoon so the accumulation is increasing. You’re absolutely right. He will finish out his term and continue to try and do his job. I certainly give him credit for that. I also believe that he sincerely tried his best with an extremely disfunctional legislature.

Unfortunately, his nice guy persona seemed to have won him a lot of friends prior to his becoming governor, but it did not serve him well once he had the position. He was never an effective leader and I give him props for knowing that it is time to step aside and let someone else take a shot at fixing the mountain of problems in NY. All his candidacy would have done was split the Dems in an expensive and likely ugly primary. Now the Dem candidate can focus on beating Rick Lazio.

this is a very good idea for a bill……please pass this petition around for support of it. below is what the author of the bill ‘freshmen’ Rep. Perriello says, lol……btw, the bill has passed the house and now is in the senate.

    http://pol.moveon.org/perriello_antitrust/index.html

“I’m sick of starting with what can we get through the Senate; let’s start with what solves the damn problem. Until the Senate gets its head out of its rear-end and starts to see the crisis we’re in, our country is literally at risk. Our economy is at risk, because these jobs are being created overseas. It should have the same urgency with this problem that it had bailing out Wall Street.

“We are swearing an oath to do what’s necessary to protect this country, not do what’s necessary to get a bill through the Senate. If you look at what voters were upset with on the health-care bill, it was all the carve-outs and exemptions and watering it down. Voters are smart; they know that the House bill stood up to the health insurance companies and the Senate bill didn’t. The same thing is true here: If they respect that the bill is actually going to transform our economy, make us more competitive and more independent, they’ll support it. If it seems like it’s just a sell-out to the big donors from the oil and gas companies, they won’t support it.

“That’s the question that we should be asking: Does this solve the problem? Is this a solution worthy of the American people? And if it is, then great; let’s move forward with it.”

This is what the petition says…..

“Strip insurers of their antitrust exemption

Unlike just about every other industry in America, health insurance companies are completely exempt from antitrust laws.

And that allows companies like Blue Cross to create monopolies and raise their premiums without having to worry about competition. In California, Blue Cross wants to raise the premiums they charge some customers by up to 39%.

Led by freshman Representative Tom Perriello, the House just passed a bill to strip insurers of their special exemption by 406-19. Now the Senate needs to follow suit.

A compiled petition with your individual comment will be presented to your senators. “

AKaurora @40 – MSNBC has been running the clip over and over – both yesterday and today, Chris Matthews has been running it and said he planned to continue – he’s really enjoying it!

On another topic regarding the summit, McConnell was whining that the Democrats were getting more time to talk than the Republicans. I loved it when POTUS responded that he was the President and he didn’t think of his opening speech as taking away from the Republicans time (I can’t remember his exact wording).

Matthews just reported on it and someone went over the 7 1/2 hours and found that overall (not counting O’s speech) the Dems got to speak a whole FOUR (yes, FOUR) minutes more than the Reps. How petty! And the Reps. wasted everyone’s time with their complaining about everything instead of staying on topic and trying to solve some differences.

Over and over, the Dems. made positive statements, such as referring to the Reps. recommendations that were included, and the overall belief by the Dems that there wasn’t all that much difference between what everyone wanted.

I though the dims came out well yesterday. Then they went and weenied out and let a fillibuster work, after they had said they would stay in session till Bunning dropped.

I’m sure we have all notice that the 2100+ page Senate bill has been referred to as a 22hundred page bill by the Repos.
Yesterday in the converence Cantor (boy did Obama take him to school) called it a 24 hundred page bill. After the conference McConnell called it a 27hundred page bill.

As a teacher, I have learned the difficult lesson that there is a distinct and inevitable downside of sharing. I teach all my kindergarteners that it’s important to share. So they do.

They share their rotten, stinkin’ germs with me from September through June, resulting in several weeks of laryngitis and 2-3 cases of bronchitis each year and, if I’m REALLY lucky, an occasional bout of pneumonia.

Along with the snow I am generously sharing with you, my neighbor to the west, I am passing on that painful lesson. Like my five-year-olds, it is given with love. UNlike my five-year-olds, I’ll keep my boogers to myself.

    Enjoy the snow! :)

Hereis more of the Trent Frank quote from Thinkprogress

FRANK: In this country, we had slavery for God knows how long. And now we look back on it and we say “How brave were they? What was the matter with them? You know, I can’t believe, you know, four million slaves. This is incredible.” And we’re right, we’re right. We should look back on that with criticism. It is a crushing mark on America’s soul. And yet today, half of all black children are aborted. Half of all black children are aborted. Far more of the African-American community is being devastated by the policies of today than were being devastated by policies of slavery. And I think, What does it take to get us to wake up?”

Georgia County Replaces Sex-Scandaled Politician With Man Who Cheated With Mother-In-Law

Stout “had an affair with his first wife’s mother while his first wife was pregnant with their daughter. Stout and his first wife subsequently divorced.”

In a reply, Stout admitted the affair. “It’s not something that’s a beautiful thing with me,” he said. “I hurt some people.”

Stout later sent an email further addressing the matter, in which he claimed that “the relationship was stopped short of ‘sex.’”

Finally – a smackdown of McCain

    snip]
finally, a man whose overriding need to be president – and whose delusional belief that his spluttering, unprincipled essence qualified him for it – led him to choose as his running mate a preternaturally ignorant, demagogic harpy whose entire platform turned out to be unearned umbrage. John McCain’s casual willingness – while unironically touting his slogan “Country First!” – to risk placing this rabid witch one cancer-ridden 73-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency makes him, to me, not the patriotic hero he likes to paint himself as, but rather more of a traitor.

One of the best smack-downs I have seen yet.

McGrampa will forever have the legacy of dragging her sorry b/u//tt on his ticket. 200 years from now in the history books he will be judged as a complete failure based on his scholastic record, his military record and the fact that he chose a complete idiot who knew very little about the world she lived in as the person who would be a heart-beat away from the Presidency.
