Founder of Second Amendment Task Force in Fairbanks Arrested for Assault.
Schaeffer Cox, 2008 State House Candidate for District 7 in Fairbanks got himself in a little hot water yesterday. The former candidate and founder of the local ”Second Amendment Task Force” was arrested yesterday on second degree assault charges. Fairbanks had eyebrows raised yesterday when I arrived, and only today have details become available on the arrest. Cox has been accused by his wife of choking her and punching her during an argument as the couple drove to Anchorage with their young son last week.
The Fairbanks Daily News Miner reported on the incident:
Court documents obtained Tuesday detail the circumstances of the arrest of Schaeffer Cox, 26, on a charge of second-degree assault, a class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Cox’s wife told Alaska State Troopers that the couple and their young son were on their way to Anchorage Thursday when they began to argue. The argument escalated, and Cox punched the woman in the arm, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
It was unclear if Cox was driving or pulled over at the time of the alleged assault.
She told Cox that if he ever touched her like that again, she would leave him and take their son. Cox then reached over, grabbed her by the throat and pinned her up against the vehicle door, court documents allege.
The woman fought him off, and Cox stopped choking her a few moments later and continued to drive to Anchorage with his wife and child, the report stated.
She contacted authorities the next day.
When an Anchorage police officer interviewed her, he noticed that there was minor bruising, redness and a fingernail abrasion on her neck. [snip]
Last year he found the Second Amendment Task Force, a local gun rights group which has organized several open-carry days. He has also organized several high-profile meetings and rallies promoting gun rights and personal freedoms. A three-hour “Freedom Fest” was held at the Carlson Center in April.
Cox’s activities, including the organization of militia, have garnered the support of such groups as the Interior Alaska Conservative Coalition and the Alaskan Independence Party.
It is amusing to note that Cox’s slogan on his campaign web site is “Schaeffer – A Voice for Reason”. If you like the slogan a lot, you can get it on a t-shirt for a $60 donation to his campaign. We learn on the site that:
Having grown up in a family business, he had already learned the rewards of hard work, imagination, and treating people well.
This incident unfortunately adds one more statistic to Alaska’s already unacceptably high rates of domestic violence.

~Scheaffer Cox

Men like him that carry to intimidate are cowards and he just proved it in spades.
Going for the throat in front of their young son……Excellent example of how domestic violence is perpetuated to the younger generation.
Hey, Mr. Second Amendment Task Force Jerk!…..Even carrying a whole crate of guns won’t make a real man out of a tool like you!
The funniest thing is seeing all the typically “tough on crime,” law-and-order, hang ‘em high gun nuts whining that Cox is presumed innocent until he receives a fair trial.
Brilliant!
Unfreaking believable… this guy is a major arse.
There are too many of these “I have an absolute right to own a firearm” idiots who have major behavior problems. He is now a wife beater. And should be separated from his firearms – every last one of them – until he gets anger management control counseling.
He also needs to drop out of the race. Any guy who acts so viciously and irresponsibly while driving lacks not only the temperament to be an elected official but is also lacking in sound reasoning and judgment.
You know, that is part of the problem. If he did this stupid thing this time in front of his son, what happens if they argue and it escalates even more? Will he pull out his gun next time? People like that make me sick.
Ugh oh!
No guns allowed in prison. Also, so far the SCOTUS has ruled against gun rights for felons.
JerryG… he absolutely deserves a fair trial.
After which he should be tied to the bumper. …
A guy who allegedly cokes his wife, in front of his child, should definitely not be allowed to have a gun.
Good ole “family values” once again…

Another republican celebration of American virtues and strengths.
Wow. Did his Second Amendment Hormones get the better of him? What a freakin jerk! I hope his gun privileges have been taken away for good reason.
At least she reported him. A lot of abuse victims don’t.
Amen. AKM
I was listening to Shannyns show yesterday and she had some good info on this as well. The whole show yesterday was good.
Look up the podcast to hear it. I heard Shannyn say today that it had been posted. Check it out.
His father is a Baptist preacher – why am I not surprised?
Here is his website (for his campaign). There is a picture of his wife, Marti (and yes, thank God she found the courage to report him).
His site ends with these words:
“Schaeffer truly cares about people and believes the state house is where he can do the most good for the most people. He asks for your participation in this worthy cause, financially and with your vote.”
http://www.schaefferforstatehouse.com/about.html
I await Jerry Prevo’s admonishment to this a$$hole’s wife to OBEY!
In CA, if the wife chooses to drop the charges, it no longer works – the DA must prosecute. Hope that is true in AK.
Come on people, check your facts! Cox is not a 2010 candidate for the state house. He ran against Kelly in 2008. The website Lori is referring people to was from his 2008 race.
Mea culpa. Someone in Fbx told me he was a current candidate and I assumed that to be the case. The website is not dated, so I assumed. And you know what they say about assuming. Copy is corrected. Thanks for letting me know. AKM
Clearly this is just a ploy to show why it’s important for women to carry firearms for self defense.
Sheer speculation, but I wonder if the fact that she reported it indicates (1) it was the first time and therefore a huge shock; or (2) it wasn’t the first time and she finally got fed up.
I don’t actually have a big problem with the Second Amendment, but I do have a big problem with guys that think choking is a form of discourse.
Oh, love the hat, too. A 26-year-old who’s trying to look as old as me.
no more guns a-hole….domestic violence will void his right to carry legally.
Gosh, a “gun supporter” accused of bullying and abusing. Shocking. Or not!!
Real men don’t brag about bedroom activities, real men keep their hands to themselves, and real men don’t pack a pistol.
I’m surprised he didn’t just shoot her. These are the same people who advocate carrying guns around for show. All they are is little small people that need to have their penis extenders strapped on to make themselves feel more important. What a joke.
Around this area of oregon..I could point out a good handfull of males..who suffer that same ‘extension’ disability..and act accordingly..24/7. A few..have money, and family importance..and have pushed the limits for years..leaving seperations behind them..and those of us who do not accept ‘neighborhood bullying tactics’..forever bright eyed..and bushy tailed. All people..especially woman..should be armed with an item you feel competent to use..and the ability to alert the authoritys..asap..when anything is seen to be..going south..in your neighborhood. Silence from intimidation..will allow them to continue. Do not..be weak!! I carry a boot knife..with about 2 in. showing above my mudders..99 % of the time..because I need to cut ropes, thin brush and cut a dog collar off..in strange places. .a habit I grew up with..on the trail. Here..in this farm area..I carry it as a small..vaccination..visable to those males in their 40s..that I am not..a victim..nor will I be. I am 72. In my mentoring/counseling hats..I am known for having had young women hide their cars behind my barn..and we go ..lock down..in my house..until they can arrange..Safe Passage..w/police or extended family. All women..watch out for yourselves..each other!!
Thank heavens his wife reported this.
Fooey on 2nd amendment hysterics like him.
Thank heavens he didn’t become a Leg.
Here’s hoping his wife has the support and assistance necessary to get away from him.
It took forever for laws to SORT of catch up with our disgust and disdain for domestic violence…
I’m wondering how this creep would have fared in my father and uncles’ day- when husbands took guys like him out back and told them that for every bruise their wives found on his wife the husbands would put 10 on him.
juneaudream – thanks for supporting women as they move away from the violence that threatens them and their children. It is so important to have a way to move forward and support to get there. Kudos to you.
Is this guy affiliated with that Hate Group recently formed in the Interior? Why am I not surprised that his father is a Baptist Minister?
There is less pressure applied when choking someone than pulling a trigger. This isn’t the first time this…..American Values and Virtue nitwit hit his wife.
I applaud this woman for standing up to her abusive husband. Being a victim of domestic violence can be a very isolating thing for some women who might feel they have no recourse or anywhere to go or anyone to tell. It’s a humiliating and traumatizing experience to be assaulted by someone who is supposed to love, honor and cherish you. Especially when you have children. I wish her and her child well.
