Open Thread – Fun With a Flip Cam
A while ago, I bought a Flip Camera – one of those teeny cell-phone sized video cameras that you can plug right into your pc and upload videos. And then I created a YouTube account! So, I filmed a few quick clips at the start of the Iditarod on Saturday, and decided to be brave and see if I could figure out how to get them on the blog.
Taa-daa!
Here’s the spontaneous street serenade by Alaska’s own Hobo Jim! I was so surprised, that I didn’t even think to video anything until the last verse…
And here are a couple teams as they head off for Nome. I was a bit farther down the race route, and out of the crowd.
And where are the teams I’ve been following, you may ask?
#50 Aliy Zirkle of Two Rivers, AK is in 13th Place out of Rohn
#36 Michelle Phillips of Tagish, YT with the “zen dogs” is 25th out of Rohn
#4 Wattie McDonald of Scotland is in 41st out of Rainy Pass
#14 Newton Marshall of Jamaica is in 46th out of Rainy Pass
#61 Colleen Robertia of Kasilof, AK is in 54th out of Rainy Pass
They’re all hanging in there so far. The leaders are on their way to Nikolai.
Leading the pack is Paul Gebhardt #7 of Kasilof.
Dog speed to you all!
You can check out the positions of all the teams at the ADN Leader Board. You can also have fun with the interactive map of the race route.

I’m First on Mudflats Iditarod comment thread – out of Anchorage with severe winds and drifting. MUSH!!
With Bonsai-Jay a close second.
Stay safe.
Everyone in this race is a winner just for being there!
Loving your mad technology skillz, AKM! and your mad sense of humo(u)r also, too.
Happy trails to all y’all. Dog Speed, indeed.
so cool
Irishgirl is in sixth position. I think!
Great videos.
Rainy day here. Ooh. Illinois mudflats at the bottom of the yard! Have a day.
Clear skies, sunshine, cold. LiladyNY in 8th place!
Go, Irishgirl!!!!

Rainy here, too, and it’s time for THE TEST for our students the rest of the week. Have to make that “adequate yearly progress” so “no child (is) left behind.” Maybe we need annual state/national testing for our politicians, eh? Adequate yearly progress??? Hmmmm.
Off to work, but leaving a lovely link for all you stargazers and science nerds out there. (New picture everyday, so if you like it, bookmark it.)

Cats love cardboard boxes. Some cats get customized boxes. The antlers on the front are cute, but really, couldn’t a talented 12 year-old with an exacto knife and a few banker’s boxes manage to create the same thing for a fraction of the price?

Roy Ashburn, California State Senator, Says He’s Gay After DUI Arrest
Ashburn, who consistently voted against gay rights measures during his 14 years in the state Legislature, came out in an interview with KERN radio in Bakersfield, the area he represents
“The best way to handle that is to be truthful and to say to my constituents and all who care that I am gay,” he said. “But I don’t think it’s something that has affected, nor will it affect, how I do my job.”

Yfeah for AKM and the flip camera! These were really fun to watch. Thank you!
Excellent videos!
Fabulous videos! You are an inspired and inspiring photographer. Thank you.
Good steady hand w/ the vid cam, AKM.
I’m amazed by the diversity among sled dogs. W/out ever being around them, I’d always imagined them to be big, strong Husky type dogs – instead they look more like they’ve been bred down in size. I love their energy – reminds me of my own crazy, happy heelers.

At least some good news out of Washington – Democracy has chalked up a win at DOJ — ES&S will NOT be allowed to control 70% of America’s voting machines.

Good news indeed. bradblog stays on top of the voting machine “issue”.
Thanks for sharing.
Sitting out this race, dog deaths from last year weighted on my heart for days. Being unemployed, close to homelessness and struggling to survive as it is I just can’t cope with much more sadness. But I really liked Hobo Jim, he’s a cutie putie. Does any Alaskan mudpuppy know if there are video’s of him on any other site?? I like local storytellers especially the musical kind.
Made me sad too… I’m sure if you go to YouTube and search Hobo Jim, you’ll find lots. AKM

Neat-o! Thanks for sharing, AKM.
I really like the ‘supporting’ vocalizations in the background of the Hobo Jim video!
You can hear a dog’s anxiety, pain, tiredness, anger, frustration, excitement, joy, eagerness, in their barking…I hear nothing but the last three (mixed with a touch of impatience!) from the dogs in chorus to Hobo Jim. Oh, such sweet, sweet, sweet anticipation ~ what incredible animals. beth.
Never heard of a “flip cam” —Great Pictures!!!!!!! OOOOOOh to be so smart!!!!!—–I am from the “Brownie” age!!—”-We have come a long way baby”

someone explain to me how the teabaggers can be against EVERYTHING quoting it as UN-Constitutional (but go to heritage.com for facts-yikes) …when they wrote the Constitution, we did NOT have private health insurance companies, nor any of the issues they are quoting the Constitution for! I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY ARE NOT CHALLENGED WITH THIS…interviewers just let them spew their stuff and the teabaggers think they got away with it.
Can you imagine a Limbaugh free country?! Pass health reform now!

Aliy Zirkle is one of my favorites, too. That woman has the most infectious smile of anyone I’ve ever met. I’ve taken dozens of pictures of her over the past few years, and she’s sporting a huge smile in every single one, even at the finish in Nome last year after a truly brutal ride.
Thanks OMG 13 for the Calgary Herald review of Palin by Rod Love. Calgary is my home town, but I would have missed it.
This review is significant, because Love is a political consultant who has spent his career as a king-maker/king-tidy-upper. If Palin could hire him I would consider her twice as scary because his specialty is taking crude wanna-bes of very different flavors, and packaging them so that their personas and platforms are acceptable to the greatest spectrum of voters. He was Executive Assistant (read Chief of Staff Plus) for Ralph Klein – Calgary Mayor and Alberta Premier, and adviser to Stockwell Day and election consultant for Stephen Harper and now has a consulting business.
When he was at the side of Klein or Day, they presented as reasonable leaders- for example the “personally I cannot agree with abortion but I cannot bar it for others” stands- which now seems so ‘good old days’-
but when Love quit working for each man you could see their public statements get careless- Love must have approved everything published.
I wonder if Love would like to manage Caribou Barbie? (She wouldn’t accept his management.) I think Love would listen carefully to his wife Charlene’s opinion about her. As a savvy conservative, he was probably as interested in her current handlers as in her.
I love this bumper sticker, and it goes with the videos above:
God, make me into the person my dog thinks I am.
If those mushers are as good as their dogs think they are, well, they’re truly stellar people.
beth @23-
I liked hearing the dogs too!!!
Rush: UGH
Costa Rica is very proud of their universal healthcare AND this (is there a word to describe how heinous he is?) he has more money than Palin’s hand-god so he can pay for the transplant of every organ he has and the cost to him would be a rounding error.
Wow! Wonderful video AKM – makes me want to get one of those new fangled video cameras to play with.
Loved the article from Calgary, thanks OMG. It hit the nail on the head, the ball out of the park, etc and also, too
Won’t it be nice for us (and awful for Costa Rica) when Limbaugh leaves the country? The blessed quietness and lack of hate will be so restful here. But it will ruin any plans to vacation in Costa Rica once he is there.

Costa Rica has no military-the money saved goes to “Socialized” Universal Healthcare, education etc.etc.. So, it’s doubtful that a fascist windbag like Limbaugh would feel very welcome!
Regarding #22: We can all hope Rush flees the country, but I would not wish him on Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with great people, but the influx of ugly Americans over the last 20 years has really sullied the country. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Central America (Honduras) in the 70;s, and Costa Rica was the one country in the region where things worked. The food and water were good, the people plucky, educated and independant, and even then, they were working hard to protect their natural environment. With the advent of the Americans, miles of pristine beach have been turned to condo-land, the economy is tilted more and more towards the service industry, and as was pointed out, shady characters have seen an opportunity and have taken it, introducing child prostitution, drugs, etc. The typical American expatriate insists on speaking English and not learning Spanish, hangs out exclusively with other Americans in these little “secure” colonies, and have nothing to do with regular Tico’s (Costa Ricans). I hate to see what the place has turned into. If Rush wants to flee, may I instad recommend North Korea, Burma, or Somalia?

My GS,severe ADHD and Aspergers,is getting ready to face “the tests” and I am worried for him.
But,you know,if Mrs Paylin had to take them as a child,maybe she would have some knowledge of the world now.
Her foolish followers don’t even realise that she does not really even know the bible,she just uses quotes given to her by others,its not like she understands them.
Costa Rica is one of those places where Americans go for “Healthcare Tourism” out side of the US,to get cheap healthcare.
Limbaugh is an idiot.Pleae,please pass this bill so he can go.

OK – sorry I digress, but it is an open thread!
Yes, Rush – do go to a country that already has socialized medicine to protest the US having choices for coverage. duh.
It seems there is another book about Mrs Paylin,I found this link at the Calgary story
https://thewisdomofwomen.net/Home.html
I do believe that good ole boy Rush would never leave his comfort zone. I doubt Costa Rica would the let him make his home there. i don’t think any civilized peoples would care to have him amongst them. that goes for O’reilly, Hannity, Palin, et. al.
read this on Narcissism Resource:……… The psychopath lives from moment to moment, changes his story at will, and is not invested in anything. The only true emotions he knows are paranoia, rage and contempt. The thin veneer of civilisation and civility lies in his moments as a ‘master assessor’ of the human condition. Psych speak is his nuclear arsenal. That is all. He has no insight into himself or anyone else. Just jargon. His entire world is created of psychiatrese. There is nothing real about it, or understandable. He is merely a technician who is incapable of fixing anything. His pyrotechnical con is just more elaborate than most. Epic fail………… i think Sarah Palin’s family and admirers would benefit from these tests which would make clear if she is just a narscistic personality or a full blown psychopath. she would never consent of course nor would she co-operate with her testers and neither would any of the other souless humans mentioned above.
Thank you to all of the mudpups who wrote their congresscritters and senators to block McCain’s misguided DSSA (Senate bill 3002). After a meeting with Orrin Hatch, McCain no longer intends to support his own bill (who wrote it for him, anyway — Glaxo Smith?) However, there’s a possibility that some of its most egregious measures may end up in Tom Harkin’s amendment to another bill. If you haven’t already contacted them, here’s a suggestion for what to say to your Representatives and Senators:
Dear Senator/Congress(wo)man,
I am writing to, once again, express my disapproval of Senator John McCain’s proposed Senate Bill 3002 (DSSA). While I understand that this Bill 3002 may be withdrawn, I seek explicit denouncement of this bill and specific provisions, and protections of my rights to buy and sell supplements as outlined in the DSHEA. Furthermore, I am concerned that many of the provisions of the DSSA will be included in Tom Harkin’s Senate Bill 510.
It is my desire, as a tax-paying US citizen, to see both Senate Bills 3002 and 510, which grant power to the FDA for supplement and farm regulation, stopped. It is my desire to see explicit provisions for the protection of my rights to buy and sell supplements and for the protection of organic food facilities from further FDA regulation. Moreover, I urge that Congress consider a thorough investigation of the FDA and the special interests that threaten to manipulate the free market, instead of granting them more power over my life.
Sincerely,
(Your name)
Thanks so much for caring about and acting on this. Our food supply is already so degraded, and it’s up to US — not the FDA, the USDA, or any other agency — to make sure we have access to real food and worthwhile supplements. Health and peace.
I remember Hobo Jim from YEARS ago. What a great time!
60 calm degrees here just a few weeks after teens and tens of inches! Saahwwweeeett !! Did have to test the sump pump to ensure its preparedness for the sudden snow melt tho. Let ‘em mush… I’ll take the sun.
Thanks AKM, went to U-Tube and found him. I think I’m in love. LOL Alaska has always been first on my list of places to visit and just thinking of getting the chance to listen to Hobo Jim sing would just sweeten the deal. Thanks again.

I have an answer for the Tea Baggers. The Constitution Article 1 Section 8
RIghts Of Congress gives Congress the right to tax for three reason 1) To
Pay debts 2) Common Defense 3) General Welfare. I am sure they would
agree with the first two. Here is a definition of General Welfare: Black’s law dictionary defines general welfare “ General term used to describe the government’s concern for health, peace, morals, and Safety of its citizens”. This says to me that health care is not a right but constitutes a government
obligation. It tells them what they must do with collected tax money,
…any word from Buff about evil kittens ? 4 and counting from last nite..

me too Irish. I meant to say at #31 that if any pup anywhere has info that can help our ‘Heart’, then please let her know. i would say to any pup who is job hunting check out government positions whether Federal,State, or County. Also check out utilities like telephone or electric companies. A few months ago i posted about IRS jobs going begging. a lot of these job come with on the job training needing little or no college degrees and some even help you go to college so you can advance in the company. some of our cities are coming out of the recession and will be hiring in the near future. i hope.
(((Shadow’s Heart))) Do let us know if there is anything we can do to help. I have an extra bed in a very messy house in Alaska if it comes to that. No mudpup should be homeless.
Getting here this time of year may be a bit of a hassle though. We have been having blizzard conditions for the last oh, 4 days or so. High winds have caused incredible drifts (beautiful to see-sucky to wade through). Why does this always happen when DH is on the slope?
Behind the scenes Iditarod update: Joseph, Colleen’s husband suggests following the GPS tracker, free on the Iditarod website, for most up to date info on where mushers are, as the updates tend to be slow. He was happy that she made it through the Happy Steps without incident (seemingly, by her time) and said that she was right on schedule last night. Dalzell Gorge is the next challenge.
He is stuck in Anchorage with 10 dogs in his truck. Some dropped already (not Colleen’s) and some that she and other local mushers took up for the experience of the Ceremonial Start but not to race with. They often do this just for the experience with younger dogs or if they are still trying to decide on which dogs will be on the final team out of the start in Willow. Anyway, he tried to come home yesterday but they got turned around by weather (he had his parents from Florida with him and I guess they were saucer eyed and white-knuckled and he felt that it would be best for their health not to continue when there were cars off the road all over the place, etc.). So the plan was to come home today, but now the road has been closed by at least 2 avalanches and the winds are still howling. He is supposed to leave to fly in to see Colleen at McGrath tomorrow morning. So we still aren’t sure how all of the logistics are going to work. He may end up staying in Anchorage. His B-I-L is supposed to fly up there to get Colleen’s parents (he could drive the truck back down and drop off the dogs with their various owners, etc). Then I will probably drive the truck back up on Wed night (I have a class up there on Thurs) and pick him up after his class with any other dropped dogs that we need to get and we drive back down together (or something like that-provided the road is open). It’s a little wild from the homefront as well.
Meanwhile I keep feeding the guys here and scooping poop and playing with the puppies as well as my 2 jobs and my own dogs and shoveling all the freakin snow that we suddenly get in March.
Pray the roads open soon. With all of this wind and snow the avalanche danger is incredibly high. I drive fast through the avalanche zones in the winter.
Woohoo!
lovemydogs–good to hear that you’re holding down the fort. I hope the roads clear soon (and to think some people think it would be a good idea to build another road in this state that would, inevitably, get hit with avalanches…) so everyone can get home to where they should be, dogs included.
Wow, lovemydogs, you are one busy woman! I guess I would not make it as an Alaskan – far too lazy
We in Seattle got winter last night – first real freeze of the season after 60+ degree day earlier. Crazy weather all over the map/country this year – climate change in all its glory I’m guessing.
Take care all in the blizzards in my adopted state!

Rainy here, too, and it’s time for THE TEST for our students the rest of the week. Have to make that “adequate yearly progress” so “no child (is) left behind.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SOOOO sorry to hear that you are about to embark on that annual torture.
I wish our state would start evaluating students (and their teachers) on their AYP as opposed to whether or not they’re on an arbitrary level determined by some idiot in the state capital who hasn’t been in a classroom since they were learning their own ABCs.
One of the teachers I work with has students who have made 2-3 years growth in a year but they’re all considered abject failures because the kids aren’t on grade level. Nobody asks where they started from in September!
One of my students a few years ago had several severe learning disabilities including a complete inability to retain information for more than a few seconds. Despite being in fourth grade, she could not read 2 and 3 letter words. I worked with her on a practice test and she spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out the word ‘if’ only to be totally stumped when she saw it on the next page. On the day of the big reading test, she wrote her name on the test booklet, opened the cover, looked at the first paragraph, closed the cover, looked at me and matter-of-factly announced that she was done. Sigh….
Thanks to all you mudpuppies out there for all your concern, encouragement and support. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Mudpups are the best. “Love my dogs” thanks for the sweet offer and I’d just be going from one messy house to another LOL but Alaska is just to darn cold for me, I’d be a popsicle 24/7.
Loved the ones of the Iditarod start. One of the neatest things we’ve ever done up there was go mushing in the Chugach (we rode the sled). It showed us how much those dogs really, really, really want to run!
