Con Bunde is Retiring.
Pardon me while I go super local for a minute. But I’ve been waiting for this day a LONG time.
Frustrated at being a marginalized wingnut, Alaska State Senator Con Bunde (R) is retiring. He is the Senate Minority Leader. The Majority is a bipartisan coalition of less marginalized wingnuts and Democrats.
You may remember Con Bunde as being the ONLY legislator not to vote to hold Todd Palin and other state employees under contempt of the Senate for ignoring legislative subpoenas during the ethics investigation of Sarah Palin.
After 18 years in the Alaska Legislature representing South Anchorage and the Hillside and more recently as the Senate’s minority leader, Sen. Con Bunde announced his retirement this morning.
This makes things very interesting in my district. With Bunde gone, the field now consists of Parnell-bot Cathy Giessel, and Cardiologist Mark Moronell who will duke it out in the Republican primary.
The winner will face Rock Star and member of the Chugach Board of Directors (D) Janet Reiser in the election.
The prize is the most ridiculously shaped district in the state.
Meanwhile, today in Senate District P, the sky is a little bluer, tiny woodland creatures are peeking out from behind trees, the sun is shining a little warmer, children leave their homes and play in the street, and lo – a rainbow is seen over the Chugach Mountains…. It’s a good day.

Congratulations, that was my old district… still my mom’s.
I’d like to say the tide is turning but it feels more like the criminals are just taking their scam underground.
How much you wanna bet Bunde gets a much higher paying position lobbying?
I must share that as I was reading this post, the sunlight did actually come through the clouds, even here on the North East side of town.

thank god. and by god i mean the actual creator, not the god of Abraham or Mohamed, not the god that demands worship and fear, not the conservatives fictional god that says pilage and plunder the earth for profit, and go forth with dominion over the other creatures. yea verily i say fly over said creatures in a helicopter and shoot them dead so that thy may have more of the other creatures to kill. not that “god”.

While I’m not fond of Con Bunde, I am even less fond of Cathy Giessel. She has been the Chair of the Alaska Board of Nursing for quite some time, and she is not someone I want to see with any more power that she has already had. I’m a nurse, and I am not happy with the decisions that the Board, (read Cathy) has made on several issues. I know nothing about the other Republican running, but it would behoove you, AKM, to really check out Ms. Giessel and know what you are up against now. Con Bunde would likely have won the primary, with the power of incumbance behind him, but with him out, she has a better than good chance to win this thing, and she is NOT an improvement for your district. Sorry

Hooray!!! I spoke w/Mr. Bunde many yrs ago on an issue he was pushing. He was singleminded and really didn’t want to hear opposing opinions. It’s just too darn bad that he wasn’t voted out yrs ago and gets to quit when he decided to, which definitely wasn’t soon enough imo…

I don’t know Janet Reiser, but if she is a real smart lady (like Harriet Drummond), I hope she wins. I am seriously going to take time off to help the local elections this year.
OT — Did you read the latest? The television series that Sarah is pitching isn’t Alaskan based, it’s a swing around the whole country interviewing people. (A campaign set-up?) Check out the last question in this interview.

You have to love this. He’s quitting because of bipartisanship. He doesn’t like it that the good old GOP won’t act like they do on the national stage. He’s been relegated to water boy, and that he just can’t take.
