Open Thread – Tasty Snow
Brian the moose slakes his thirst by enjoying some new fallen snow. I don’t know how many calories it takes to warm up after eating a bunch of snow in 5 degree weather, but it’s definitely not as much as lugging around a 20 or 30 pound set of antlers!
Here’s a quick Iditarod update for those of you who are following my teams with me.
Team #50 – Aliy Zirkle of Two Rivers, AK is in 14th place out of Ruby – Still rooting for a top ten finish for her!
Team #4 – Wattie McDonald of Scotland is in 50th place out of Cripple
Team #14 – Newton Marshall of Jamaica is in 52nd place out of Cripple
Team #61 – Colleen Robertia (rescue dogs) is in 41st place out of Cripple
Team #36 – Michelle Phillips (zen dogs) is in 33rd place out of Cripple
A few teams have scratched, but mine are all hanging in there so far.
*Three teams of the four out in front are past winners. *Jeff King is in first place, followed by reigning champ *Lance Mackey, Hugh Neff and *Mitch Seavey, all out of Galena.
One exciting bench mark in the race comes when the first musher reaches the Yukon River. A special treat is in store for whoever makes it ahead of the pack. This time it was veteran musher Jeff King who got to enjoy the Yukon prize – an eight course meal prepared on camp stoves by Jeff Leake of The Milennium Hotel in Anchorage. King dined on king crab, grilled halibut, bison stew, and blackberry jubilee among other delicacies. And for dessert, the first to the Ruby checkpoint got $3500 in crisp $1 bills. Fourteen checkpoints down, eleven to go.
The Leader Board is HERE.
The Race Map is HERE.

Let me be the First to congratulate you on your team-selecting skills, AKM, and to thank you for the photo of Sir Brian of the Snowy Snout.
Good morning and good weekend, all.
‘Morning CrowWoman and AKM
the teams are hanging in there and doing well. love my dogs has been telling us about her time taking care of Colleen’s dogs. What a good friend she is.
i am so happy to see Brian with Snow on his nose. i dreamed last night of the youngster who ran up to AKM’s window to show off his new rack. i have it saved in ‘my docs.’ he certainly has grown up. i wonder if he will ever want to play again with the blue ball. well, back to bed maybe Brian will visit my dreams again.
Go, Aliy! What a neat lady. She’s pretty, too. And tall!
Brian, I must say those holes in your head do not add to your sexiness. But then, I’m not a lady moose.
sweet dreams, bubbles.
No rolling over and going back to sleep for me this lovely Shabbos morning, but maybe tomorrow…naaah, I’ll be outside by sunrise! Might nap in the sun on the swing in the garden by the pond, though…
Off to meet with librarians, union activists, and friends of education; the Florida legislature is considering eliminating funding for public libraries and also, too, a 61 page assault on public education…oy,vey! We have our work cut out for us, but unlike some folks we could mention, We Don’t Quit! We nap sometimes, but like AKM’s Iditarod picks, we don’t quit.
tigerwine, those holes are kinda Mr. Potato Head, eh? Weird, strangely fascinating, but I’m with you… it must take a Madamooselle to see the sexy.
Good morning!
Wasilla mudpuppies, don’t forget the coffee party this morning at 10am at the Metro Cafe on Lucille Street.
It’s a little chilly this morning at -8 F, so bundle up.
One of my Republican friends sent me this…I still thought it was pretty funny…I present to you the conservative take on Ernest Thayer’s classic, “Obama at the Bat”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Tcahn7PwQU&feature=player_embedded
We’ll see if there’s any joy in Mudville tonight when my Wildcats take on KU for the Big 12 Championship…whooo hoooo!
Oh, the irony …
I was researching something else at Palingates and discovered this:
http://palingates.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-04-24T19%3A24%3A00%2B02%3A00&max-results=6
Scroll down a bit to see the copies of what you could access from the former first Dude’s page at the official State of Alaska website.
And there you can click to find out all about, and purchase products from Mystic lubricants, part of whose proceeds go to keep Hugo Chavez’s CITGO in business.
I know in a way this is old news, but I always thought it was wrong for sponsors, whether connected with Argentina or good old ‘real’ American, should not be linked from an official government website. Call me funny.
Happy Saturday to all – After a few days of 70s and sunshine, we are back to rainy and chilly 40s here in SW KY. DH returned from a week’s business trip and brought me another stuffed Brian to add to my burgeoning collection. This little guy is one of the “Webkinz”. I don’t know that I’ll utilize the website and build him his own house and furniture, nor play games with the other critters…….but he’s might handsome sitting next to my computer.
I caught the tail end of a newsclip on CNN that mentioned the Coffee Party being held in Boston today and it mentioned that the group was the polar opposite of the Tea Party movement, and that the primary focus of the group would be CIVILITY…….wouldn’t that be a nice change? I do hope the movement continues to grow and that the MSM will pick up on it and give some positive exposure. However, as we all know so well, media is more interested in reporting controversy and shockers than something calm and reasonable.
Thanks AKM, for keeping us posted on the Iditarod. I can remember one of the years when we were living in Anchorage, that there wasn’t much snow and truckloads of it were hauled in for parts of the trail around town.
R’ipley in CT – Hope your interview went well and that you got the job!?!?
In case you haven’t been following Anonymous Blogger recently, Victoria will be heading off to an agricultural conference and Ugashik has one of the new greenhouses. It will be fantastic if Alaskan villages are able to grow some of their own fresh produce. I would be more than happy to contribute to a seed fund.
Morning All !
Popping in for a quick ” howdy”. Between the desk work, the craziness of getting ready to move, taking care of the kitties and still looking for an apartment, I’m lost in a strange little world.
GG2C – re: the Coffee Party – I had been seeing bits and pieces about it on Twitter and some other boards but I assumed it was something along the lines of “Billionaires for Health Care” . I finally took a closer look at it a few days ago and signed up immediately. http://www.CoffeePartyUSA.com ( might be .org ) The fact that they truly ARE open to all folks who are interested in civil and open minded discussion and participation thrilled me. There was a Coffee Party gathering in our area last night. I couldn’t attend but I hope to connect with the person who put it together. I want to learn more! ( i wish they would have held it at one of our really great locally owned coffee shops though instead of a chain store. )
New kitties are doing well. The two little ones are still rather runty but hanging in there . The twins are getting heftier by the hour. Eyes still closed but the ears have perked up as of this morning. Mama Kitty decided to present me with a gift at 3am. I woke to find one of the twins being laid on my head. ( and this reminded me that I need to keep the kitchen door closed !)
A big wave to everyone. I’m off to my craziness. Hopefully I’ll have things back to normal by mid-April. Otherwise, I might just go mad. Happy Weekend !

I received this on my Facebook home page and since it features an Inuit singer, I wanted to share this video here. The ‘throatsinging’ that is mentioned and demonstrated means that the singer produces two tones at once. (The second tone is a type of overtone of the first.) Some of you may be familiar with this idea if you’ve heard the Tibetan monks or Bulgarian folksingers – among others. Here the singer, Tanya Tagaq, is performing with the Kronos String Quartet. (There are also some other videos of her that come up as suggestions when you click this link.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCSxNOdZEww
” ‘A String Quartet in Her Throat,’ directed by Mark Lawrence, documents the collaboration between Kronos Quartet and Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq on a piece called Nunavut. The project began in January 2006 as Kronos and Tagaq came together in the Yukon Territory and created a 15-minute piece that can be described as an ‘intimate improvisation.’
“Nunavut is part of an evening-length program of the same name that explores the clarity, directness, and unique relationships of music and sounds from the North. More info can be found at http://www.kronosquartet.org.”
Oh, I forgot to mention – when the musicians take a break they go riding on dog sleds!
Good day, everyone. Brian always looks beautiful to me, even with holes in his head! Thanks to AKM for posting.
Health and peace to all.
This video has examples that are more traditional in style, and a lot more information about the Inuit throat singing in the notes.

Operation Yellow Ribbon is playing right now on MSNBC.
It is hosted by Tom Brokaw and is the story of 9/11 when so many planes were forced
to land in Gander. The population of the town was nearly doubled with all those from the
flights. It is a tear-jerking, heart-warming story of a small town pulling together to help.
Watch it if you can, or try to catch it later on the website. FANTASTIC!
Buff !! Thanks for the kitten update ! was curious if there were more than 4 !!
Go, Jeff, go!
~from a long time friend.
Got an email political update today, telling about the Republican plans to take back the House and their use of a poster with Obama made up as the Joker.
Pardon me, but I’ve seen this poster. I frankly don’t think it’s the Joker, as bad as that would be. I think it’s a black man (Obama, duh) done up in white face. A reverse Amos and Andy thing. It’s blatantly racist and bigoted and I can see the appeal to anyone who doesn’t want to admit their racism. “Oh, it’s the Joker, we think he’s a joke!” No they think he’s a black boy who doesn’t know his place and is trying to “act white.”
I don’t want their America back. I want one that’s better.
Here’s a (perhaps loaded) question for you Alaskans from an east coaster.
What is the local perception of Jeff King, especially after the legal wranglings of two years ago when he got caught hunting within Denali Park boundaries?
I’ve interpreted his ‘show’ several times for deaf cruise ship passengers and found him very friendly and down to earth (not to mention funny as he11). I realize that that is an important skill to learn when you’re depending on tourists visiting your compound to provide a large part of your income, but it seemed pretty genuine to me. I was curious to know what people who live in Alaska think of him since I read a lot of negative comments during the court case. I wondered if they were an accurate representation of the popular opinion or just people who were jealous of his success. The last time I was there, he left in the middle of the show and said he was leaving for Fairbanks to go food shopping. The timing seemed a little odd to me and I read several days later that he had actually left to go to a court appointment.
Anyone???
Thanks for the Brian update! Can’t imagine having to grow and then lug around antlers every year…I have a hard enough time dealing with hair cuts.
GreatGranny – Try to get a copy of “The Day the World Came to Town” by Jim DeFede. It’s a story of the wonderful town of Gander, Newfoundland, and how they welcomed and coped with all those planes landing there after 9/11. Gives you faith in mankind again.
http://www.savebiogems.org/tongass/ is the link where you can take action to save the forest (and therefore the wolves) surrounding the National Park.
As other posters have pointed out, this issue is not just Alaskan. National parks, national monuments, and wildlife refuges are for ALL of us. I, for one, was very happy to be directed to the Ft. Niobrara Wildlife Refuge in Nebraska while visiting friends on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota a few years back (we’d already visited Glacier, Yellowstone, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, Ten Sleep Canyon, Devil’s Tower, Mt. Rushmore, etc., and finished our national park tour with the Badlands before we flew home). In Ft. Niobrara, we took a lovely hike (waterfalls, wild fowl, great trail maintained by local scouts) and fell hard for the prairie dog towns (they’re too cute for words). Wild places should stay wild.
Alaska needs income/jobs completely unrelated to extractive, environmentally destructive industries (mining, drilling, timber, etc.), and cannot afford to wreck its tourism business by destroying what it is we tourists want to see when we visit.
Health and peace to all.
Tigerwine – Thanks for the tip! I just went on e-Bay and found one for under $10, so I’m sure I’ll spend next weekend reading it. We were stationed at Fort Campbell KY back in 1985 when we lost 256 soldiers and crew in the crash at Gander.
The people of Newfoundland were marvelous back then as well, and donated trees for every person killed, and those were planted at a memorial established outside of Fort Campbell – in Hopkinsville KY.
It is wonderful that there are people scattered around the world who would do the same for others during a time of need or crisis. Just look at the response to the Haitian disaster. We just don’t hear enough of the everyday/average good folks and their many kindnesses – we just hear all the tripe and complaining from those who wouldn’t help anyone of their lives depended on it.
What ever happened to the proposed So. Cal Mudstock meet? I remember reading something with a possible date of today, but nothing after that. I guess it’s too late now to drive anywhere to meet anyone.
@ leenie17
This Alaskan loves Jeff King! He has been one of the great spokesman for the race as a multi time winner – as you said he’s personable and funny! I don’t know the details of the park violation personally – truth be told, my hubby does seasonal work for Denali Park and the rumor he’s heard a lot is that the park rangers are, well, hmmm… how do I say it? Control freaks, not flexible, downright unfriendly, etc. etc. And I must say I believe there is jealousy there, unfortunately. Just like the pressure this year to drug test mushers, coming from other mushers, because they are jealous of Lance Mackey (cancer survivor who makes no bones about his medical use of marijuana).
That is only a rumor, I can’t say this for myself since it’s been years since I have been in the park. But hubby is up there every year for a short time and that’s the scoop he hears. Since I adore Mr. King, his dogs, his resolve, and all the hard work he’s done for the race – if I had to take sides, it would be his. I’ve met him, talked to him, and I’ve seen his dogs. He is a fantastic musher, as is Lance Mackey.
Just gotta say it:
Go Colleen! Go Penny! Go all 14 team and wheel dogs! Go Rogues Gallery Kennel!
MUYS – Thanks for the comment. I’m glad to know from your perspective that my instincts were right on.
I was quite impressed with his kennel and how he appeared to treat his dogs, although I’m the first to admit that I’m clueless about the realities of mushing. I visited a kennel in Wyoming about 10 years ago, and King’s was head and shoulders above it in terms of the conditions and the interactions with the dogs. There seemed to be a deep love and concern for his dogs from his whole family and staff. He went out of his way to accommodate me as I worked and even started joking around with me by the third or fourth time I’d been through the show.
And, thanks to Jeff King, I now know the difference between antlers and horns and shared that very fact with my first graders just last week when I did a sign language lesson on Alaska (including moose, of course, which ALL of my kiddies know is my absolute favorite animal!)!
Here are Colleen’s racers – are these happy dogs or what?
http://rogueskennel.com/4.Athletes/1.Racers.htm
I still can’t get over Penny the lead dog – under 30 lbs and tough as nails! I adopted a sled dog, who at 45 lbs, was too small and legs to short to run with her musher’s team. Living with that dog for 16 years showed me that once a sled dog, always a sled dog! Even the ones who can’t make the cut. It’s all she ever wanted to do, it was her very core and soul.
Another republican bites the dust…….Rep. Kevin Garn just resigned.
He was outed for paying hush money to cover up a skinny dipping incident when he was 28, the girl was 15, a minor, oops! I wonder what he defines as sex.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/nation/6911005.html
“Garn owns KSG Distributing Inc., which sells books on tape, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes to retailers such as truck stops, grocery stores and convenience stores. Maher worked in his warehouse at the time.
Scandals of this nature are rare in Utah politics, where there’s a heavy Mormon influence, so the fallout Friday was pronounced.”
I think that anyone who knows Jeff King personally would find it laughable to even think that he would be teaching his daughter to poach inside the Park. The boundary of the park is not clearly marked and in the winter it is very difficult to know your exact location. He made an honest mistake and that is all.
With celebrity comes jealousy and a loss of privacy. Jeff has made a good life and a good income for himself out of his racing, but there is a price to pay as well. I think that whole ordeal of the court case was part of the price.
As far as what most Alaskans think, I would never attempt to speak for the group. We aren’t exactly known for consensus.
oh dear, apparently he was married when he skinny dipped in the hot tub with a minor. tsk, tsk, tsk……and he was her boss, tsk again. And who is going to believe nothing sexually happened.
http://www.postchronicle.com/news/original/article_212289552.shtml?rssfeed
“Garn told the AP that it was a “spur of the moment” decision and that nothing sexual occured. Garn was married at the time of the incident and Maher worked under him. Garn was scared to be publicly judged.”
@ leenie17
Here’s Jeff King’s side of the story from the News Miner on April 11, 2008. This is when I questioned my hubby about it. He pretty much snorted and said something like “Can you say rabid control freaks?” about the NPS rangers. Jeff has been hunting in that area for years.

Almost 15,000 sigs on Rep. Grayson’s newest petition!
“Dear Speaker Pelosi,
If we’re going to vote on bills without a public option, we should also vote on the public option.
Our bill (HR 4789) lets anyone buy into Medicare.
We’ve had lots of debate. Now it’s time to vote.
Regards,
Rep. Alan Grayson”

mlaiupa …
let’s get a socal mudstock going.
@ GreatGranny2C @ 23~ [snip] “We were stationed at Fort Campbell KY back in 1985 when we lost 256 soldiers and crew in the crash at Gander.” [/snip]
We, too, also. (Lord, can it be that many years ago?) beth.
hmmmm, this story just gets juicier and juicier….the Desert News is a conservative paper owned by the LDS Church, they had the hot tub story shortly before the 2002 Garn election, he even went in to the newspaper and cried tears, they chose not to run the story. Even after he lost that election, or when he re-entered politics in 2004 and 2006 they chose not to run the story. WHY NOT?!
I also read that Garn, his wife, the woman and her LDS Bishop met to discuss the incident. Good grief. So a Bishop helped cover up a Utah politician breaking the law? What did the Bishop get out of this deal?
If I lived in Utah or was Mormon I’d be voicing my opinions toward the church and the church owned newspapers covering up news stories in order to protect businessmen and politicians.
And the Senate Repubs gave him a standing O after his confession? GAH!
And where is journalist Jerry Spangler these days? he’s responsible too.
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700016111/D-News-takes-lumps-in-Garn-story.html?pg=2
“Former Deseret News reporter Jerry Spangler said the episode began in 2002 when he wrote a profile of Garn and his congressional race just before the Republican primary election. He said Cheryl Maher called him to say “there is a side of him you don’t know about,” and told him about the n*de hot-tubbing.
Maher said Friday that she also contacted the Salt Lake Tribune in 2002 and told it the same story.
[....]
He and Bernick said Garn came into the Deseret News offices and met with them and several editors. “I remember him crying,” and confessing what happened, Spangler said.
[....]
When Garn lost — which meant he would be out of politics — Spangler said editors decided the story was moot.
[...]
Spangler said he kept in contact with Maher for a few weeks after the election, and she finally told him that she didn’t want to talk about the incident anymore — that she had received an apology from Garn and that is what she wanted. “She didn’t tell me about the $150,000, though” — hush money that Garn paid her, he said.”
Zyxomma @22 Says: http://www.savebiogems.org/tongass/ is the link where you can take action to save the forest (and therefore the wolves) surrounding the National Park.
Thank you for the link. Done. I’m not able to make donations, but I write a pretty powerful (mudflats fueled) letter.
MUYS and mudkitten….love the insider insights. and also, too, I no longer automatically shudder when I hear the word Rogue…
((((leenie17 and teh first graders)))) I would love to visit your class! Good for you! and your lucky students. When the little ones out number me that much, I get the heebie-jeebies. No heebie-jeeebies from classroom full of middle schoolers or a library full of high schoolers…go figure…But how lovely it is that there’s a teacher/librarian for every age, eh?
Grown men have No Excuse for taking advantage of under-aged young ones. Disgusting. Pathetic. and all too common. Our young ones deserve our protection, our guidance. …shameshameshame…
Fawnskin: I agree on that SoCal Mudstock! Let’s do it!
okay, they hot tubbed more than once…….hmmm.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/kstu-gop-leader-garn-resigns-after-skinny-dipping,0,4426805.story
“Maher said by telephone Saturday that she and Garn were in a hot tub together twice — once in late 1984 after she had just turned 15 and again a few months later in 1985. She declined to say if the pair were n*de both times or to provide any other specifics of the hot tubbing episodes.”
Here is a commenter who apparently knows more about the situation……who says Maher babysat for the family, before she worked for his business, and that he provided alcohol before the n*de hot tubbing. And I read somewhere else that he drove her to the hot tub location.
To me it all sounds like a pedophile setting up his prey. It also sounds like Maher was concerned the same thing could have happened to others. If so, I do hope they come forward. There are some very sketchy parts to his side of this story.
“laytonian wrote 4 hours 15 min ago
DO THE MATH!
Various stories say “was 28, he was naked with a 15-year-old girl in a hot tub 25 years ago.”
Do the math! He was born 01/14/1955 – and all agree that there’s 15 years in age between them. He’s 55 now, and she’s 40.
So….if this happened when he was 28, SHE WAS ONLY 13 !!!!
Remember, folks, she started babysitting for the family, later went to work for KSG Distribution and they had a “months long” relationship. He ALSO bought alcohol, before they went to the “hot tub place” that he obviously knew so much about.
There’s much more to this story, and based on ONLY watching this piece of slime enrich himself with favoritism from the city of Layton, we’ll probably start hearing it.
WHERE IS THE BISHOP who failed to notify police?
SHE WROTE A LETTER TO MONSON of the LDS Church, in 2008?
WHERE WERE THE GIRL’S PARENTS who failed to notify police?
WHY DID GARN’S WIFE AND SON try to convince her that “this was God’s plan”.
This is one of THE most sickening things ever. If a young girl isn’t safe within her own religion against a powerful man, who is? Oh, wait. The powerful man is safe. That’s all that matters.
I am ready to boycott all businesses owned by Kevin Garn (or in which he holds an interest/partnership). But SOMEONE around here has to have ethics and morals, and I can’t support a high-powered pedophile protected by his church
I had no use for Sego Lily Day Spa, but I’m going to miss Corbin’s Grille.
Western States Lodging http://westernstateslodging.com/ (several motels in Layton, as well as Legacy House assisted living centers and THE DAVIS COUNTY CONFERENCE CENTER and the new hotel going in next door)
KSG Distributing (but I don’t buy music/videos at truck stops anyway)
Oh yeah…that sweet deal (RDA?) for the Fort Lane Shopping Center redevelopment, coincidentally happening while the new interchange is being built?”
just saw that KO’s Dad has passed….
a legal minor? someone from UT help me out with this……
“Garn, 55, acknowledged the indiscretion with the legal minor immediately after the Legislature adjourned for the session.”
another gov’t leader (from Utah) jumps ship…quit before any investigation, I suppose…what’s the matter, fella’s/transparency too much for ya? …you liked it better when you could hide from us. well, no more, b/c we’re gonna getcha/all of you!
Gram ?? Still there ? just missed you in chat. it’s 9:40ish EST. C’mon back !

Good thing you weren’t in my job four years ago. I had a CAP class (for kids who aren’t quite ready for regular kindergarten) added to a general ed kindergarten class for my sign language lessons every week. I ended up with a grand total of 35 FIVE YEAR OLDS at one time, in one classroom, with no other adults. There were always at least 3 or 4 cherubs gazing at me with their fingers planted firmly in their nostrils. If I made it through the 45-minute lesson without anyone wetting their pants or crying, I considered it a very good week!
I figure if I could survive that experience and still smile, I could survive anything!!
I was watching Wanda Sykes tonight. Before she brought her panel of Guests she was interviewing the young Girl that protested/spoke up at her Mississippi H.S. about same-sex couples attending, and then the Principal canceled the Prom. Big news story last week. Wanda was interviewing her.
She then told the Girl that She was going to receive an Award from GLADD on April 17th. ( as quoted below )
Wanda asked the girl if she would come out to L.A. to present the Award to her. Wanda said she could think of no better person than her to do it.
She Girl said yes. ( can’t find anything on Google yet )

“Wanda Sykes will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, awarded to an openly LGBT media professional who has promoted equal rights. In November 2008, Sykes came out at a Stand Out for Equality rally of over 1,000 people in Las Vegas and announced that she had legally married her wife in California. ”

thanks for the link Honesty. i admire Wanda Sykes and am happy for her
Also… about the Wanda Sykes Show. She has a blog on her webpage for comments. Lets see if my comments stays after Moderation.

Wanda,
I didn’t see a thread for tonights show. I thought that was very thoughtful that you would invite the High School girl from Mississippi to present that award from GLADD to you on April 17th.
On an OT note… I know you disagree with MOST of the ideas and or policies that Sarah Palin promotes. I can think of a panel discussion topic for you.
This week some of Sarah’s close personal ” Friends ” she appointed to a Board want pass a law to go back to hunting down the Wolves around Denali National Park. All to the benefit of her friends in the Hunting businesses.
What about the people who want to go to out NATIONAL PARKS ( the rest of us ) to see these beautiful creatures to take their pictures. That industry provides Millions of dollars to AK. Sarah wants her FRIENDS to benefit by trapping them. Please look into it. GREAT show.
What a nice way to wake up – I just check the Iditerod website and Aliy Zirkle has moved into 10th place! And, yes, I remembered to set my clock ahead.
