Didn't Will Ferrilll use the "Kicking it old school" line in a couple of his dumb movies? I'm thinking the race car movie and the one that he returned to college. The line was a laugh line, to make his character look like the fool. Which worked for the character in the movies, I guess Sarah didn't know that.

Punkinbugg @49 said, "Isaiah 49:14-16 (New International Version)
14 But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me,
the Lord has forgotten me.”
15 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
I will not forget you!
16 See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are ever before me."

Thanks for kickin' it old school and putting granny blah blah's "handwriting" In Context....amazing how perspectives change when we move from snippet to Chapter And Verse, eh? They say a Little Knowledge is a dangerous thing; I would add that a Lot of Learning makes us Safer.

And also, too, a similar picture sprang to my mind.

I kick it old school with my students during homecoming week when we have "80's Day"...but that's just the way we roll! :)

And once again, she proves that she is a fraud. She wouldn't know "old school" if it were dropped in front of her. I know the expression but have never used it because it would most definitely make me feel like I had co-opted a phrase that does not belong to me.

There is absolutely no reason for the most of the folks who comment on this thread to be familiar with an African American colloquialism meaning to do something in a similar way to how that something was done before: i.e. preparing a meal using the same or similar recipes that one's mother or grandmother might have used long ago. that Sarah Palin used that expression was a subtle expression of contempt because like most Americans Sarah Palin does not know many Black people and those that she does know are neither friends or social aquaintances therefore she attempts to co-opt an expression of a people of whom she is an arch enemy and who she actively despises.

Soooo I took the bait and looked up Isaiah 49:16, and then --- like a good ol' Southern Babdist gal that I am --- I read a few verses north of 16, and looky what I found:

Isaiah 49:14-16 (New International Version)

14 But Zion said, "The LORD has forsaken me,
       the Lord has forgotten me."

15 "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
       and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
       Though she may forget,
       I will not forget you!

16 See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
       your walls are ever before me.

I don't know why, but this image popped into my head:

I'm 62. My kids are 18 and 20. There has been some generational blurring, so we share opinions about some examples of music or humor or art, and differ on other examples.

My 18-year-old uses the verb "kick" (in its "hang out" or "do it" sense) fairly regularly. My 20-year-old has never used it much. Both of them use the adjective phrase "old school" from time to time.

If I were to utter the phrase "kicking it old school", I don't believe either of them would laugh at me, or even feel humiliated. I think they would react as we do when someone trying to speak a foreign language comes close to getting idiom right, but misses slightly. Gentle amusement.

On the other hand, I cannot be sure of this because the chances of my ever saying "kicking it old school" are zero. It's possible that I might sometime use the term "old school" as a shorthand -- I have actually said "back in the day" more than once -- but "kicking it" is terminally unlikely.

Does Sarah-poo think she has a big following among skateboarders?
