Open Thread – Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Here’s hoping your day is festive, and a celebration of all things Irish. Remember, wear green or you might get “affectionaetly pinched” according to Wikipedia. Then again, maybe you might NOT want to wear green. I suppose it all boils down to personal preference.
And if you do indulge in the traditional green beer or two or three, remember to call a cab or bring a designated driver!
While we’re in a festive mood, I thought I’d do a little cross post from the Events page. There are so many things going on this week, I thought I’d post them here, and remind everyone that the Events page is always there, and you are welcome to send me an email with an event, or just invite me on Facebook (AK Muckraker) and I’ll post it.

Happy St Patrick’s Day everybody ♥
Happy Paddy’s Day from Ireland to AKM and all the mudpups!
This day is more special to me than it used to be. Went to Ireland a few years ago and it felt more like home to me than even my beloved Vermont. So I like all these reminders of Ireland that pop up this time of year. May the Lord bless and keep you all.
“…And if you do indulge in the traditional green beer or two or three, remember to call a cab…”
I thought it said “cabbage,” and the image in my mind was so startling and strange I burst out laughing and had to reread several times….but I just can’t shake “green beer….remember to call a cabbage.”
Cracking myself up, giggling madly. (I suspect it’s the fever from this annoying bug my students have so generously shared with me, or perhaps the medicine…) Not wearing any green, but feeling a bit “green around the gills” as Grandpa Linus, of blessed memory, used to say. Grandma Shorty, of blessed memory, would never say “sick.” She referred to being under the weather as “feeling puny.”
Whatever I am, I’m rambling, also, too. Time for more OJ and aspirin, then back to bed…where our flannel sheets are a lovely print of dozens of rainbow trout (see the green?) swimming in a dark greenyblue stream…so I will be “wearing green” while I “sleep with the fishes.”
(relax…just a nap…no mobsters here)
Good morning and good night again, all. (waving to Irishgirl) Have a pleasant St. Patrick’s Day…”may the wind be always at your back…” and something that has Nothing to do with $P about …”the palm of His hand”…
Happy St. Paddy’s day President Obama. And a very, very happy St. Paddy’s day to all my mudpups out there as well.

May your blessings outnumber, The shamrocks that grow, And may trouble avoid you, Wherever you go.
May God grant you many years to live,
For sure he must be knowing.
The earth has angels all too few.
And heaven is overflowing.
Sláinte. Erin Go Bragh!
Good morning says I in my green Crocs. Himself is still in KY tending to his parents. Whoof. Difficult times for that family.
My mother is grooving right along, happy as a clam. Has a great world and is danged happy in it. Except when she starts reading about Congress, and then I get phone calls, and so do the ones who are ticking her off! She is only ten miles away, and I can get to her daily, which is good.
Hoping to get outside and rake a bit if the front yard has drained enough. The back is a bog, and no rush with that one.
A week and a bit till our younger daughter gets married! Wow. Can’t believe it.
Happy St. Paddy’s Day !!
Last nite I attended a live taping of etown at the beautiful Boulder Theater with Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. Ah……..nothing like some bone rattlin’ funk , gospel and soul.
Please take a look at the site.
“Etown is an exciting weekly radio broadcast heard from coast to coast on NPR, public and commercial stations. Every etown show is taped in front of a live audience and features performances from many of today’s top musical artists as well as conversations and information about the world around us. At Etown, we build community through music”

Happy St. Pat’s, mudpups!
I live in the Irish Channel in New Orleans and there is a huge block party just down the street from me. I’ve been for a poboy (yum) already and will head back in a bit to enjoy the crowd and beer. It’s a 42 year tradition for this bar to hold the party, so it’s great fun and a must-attend. There’s also a parade in the French Quarter this evening. There was a pretty good parade on Saturday (also) too, so in effect, we’ve had 2 St. Pat’s! I am REALLY glad I found my wee lil house, instead of moving to the ‘burbs as everyone wanted me to.
No doubt by now the hyper-aware mudpups have already heard of Move Your Money, which Arianna Huffington has been promoting as hard as she can.
Well, J.P. Morgan Chase is responsible for 80% of the funding for mountaintop removal coal “mining,” to which I’m passionately opposed (like all enviros). If you have an account at Chase, close it! If you have their credit card, transfer your balance (preferably to a credit union credit card, which is lower rate). Leave Chase with nothing but corporate investors, and empty banks. Tell them why you’re closing your account!
Health and peace to all, and party on, Irish (and honorary Irish).

hi Zyxomma! If I had some money, which I don’t, i would move it and myself to the Fiji Islands. Sunshine, ocean air and me lying in a hammock and sucking down Mai Tais.
From About.com…
“According to legend, the earliest celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in America took place in Boston in 1737, when colonists of Irish descent marked the event with a modest parade.
The Boston event is often cited as the earliest celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in America, but historians as far back as a century ago would point out that a prominent Irish-born Roman Catholic, Thomas Dongan, had been governor of the Province of New York from 1683 to 1688. Given Dongan’s ties to his native Ireland, it has long been speculated that some observance of St. Patrick’s Day must have been held in colonial New York during that period, although no written record of such events seem to have survived.”
Even THAT far back… ‘long been speculated… must have been held… although no written record…’ The politics of the claim to fame of the first parade. Don’t ever tell a ‘southie’ that NY was first! ‘Tis a great day indeed for all the Irish and wanna-be’s… enjoy a pint or two but be careful on the road! I’ll be waitin’ for Herself and my daughter to get off work, and for my granddaughter to get home from schoolin’… then off we go to Flanigans for a bit of the corned beef and cabbage… and a Guinness for Himself!
May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been…
The foresight to know where you are going…
And the insight to know when you’ve gone too far!
Happy St Patricks Day to you all!
BahstinBoyo
Happy St. Patricks day everyone! Have something green, do something to promote “green”, but most of all, have fun!
dear AKM and Anchorage Mudpups if i were able to be there i would go to the
Gospel Benefit Concert for the Haiti Relief Fund
Sunday, March 28th, 4:00pm at 855 East 20th Ave. Anchorage
i would go and make friends for Mudflats. i would tell the people there about this virtual community on the Flats and i would tell them that they are more than welcome to come on board and be a part of a progressive, activist blog that supports and upholds the President we all elected. I know they would be pleased to be invited.
I think AKM’s listing of local events is a wonderful way in itself to commemorate St. Patrick. Patrick’s work involved exercising the mind, the spirit, and the imagination, and emphasized the value of community life, of involvement with the world around us. So many of the trappings we associate with St. Patrick’s Day, such as corned beef, green beer, and other kinds of sham rockery really aren’t Irish at all. Instead, I try to celebrate by reading a good book, reciting a poem, taking a walk out in the beautiful world, and trying to engage in the civic life of my community. It produces no hangovers.
((((Mag the Mick)))). I was just thinking of you as I sat down to the computer and lo and behold when I refreshed….you were there!!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you.
And may I add, no green beer or corned beef here either.
And to you, Irishgirl. Go have a pint at the Blue Light for me!

Mag… Irishgirl… no offense, Ladies!
I don’t do the green beer… I’m a Guinness man. And the corned beef and cabbage, although started in America by Irish origin, is still a tradition to get the family together and enjoy each others company for a spell. For every one who DOES the ‘Americanized’ version seems to enjoy it… as do the hard working waiters and waitresses and cooks at the local. Kind of helps put the bread on THEIR table, don’t ya know! Being born and raised in New England, the alternate version, or the New England Boiled Dinner, kept us warm and happy many a time. Herselfs’ Dah was born in Ireland and came to NY as a we’un. Until his demise, he always had the CB&C and homemade Irish soda bread (again, not invented by the Irish, but almost always identified with them) every year. There are those that do, and those that don’t. To each his own, I say. Read a book, dine with family, lift a pint with friends… whichever you choose… they are ALL worthwhile!
From ‘The History Of Food’…
“Corned beef and cabbage is a classic dish created by Irish immigrants in the United States. The immigrants used the corned beef rather than other types of meat such as pork or bacon. The dish contains the corned beef along with cabbage and some vegetable such as carrots and potatoes.
It is perhaps ironic that corned beef and cabbage is linked with St. Patrick’s Day since the dish is not from Ireland. As often happens, we lost our since of history, and simply adopted the dish for St. Patrick’s Day since it was created by Irish immigrants. Corned beef and cabbage remains quite popular in the New England region of the United States as well as parts of Canada in that same geographic area. Maybe it is the fact that the dish contains very simple foods that makes it so popular even to this day. That question may never be answered, but one thing seems clear, this dish is here to stay.”
Off to Flanigans! And I’ll leave a BIG tip! Cheers all!
Cheers BahstinBoyo……I am glad you are a Guinness man. Hubby brews it for a living!!
However, I will never be a fan of corned beef!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day everybody and especially to my 3 year old Phantom. Happy Boofday little boy! You’ll get your three laps of Guinness tonight with dinner.
Irish Wolfhounds Rule! WooHoo!
A different take on the history of corned beef. And where the pinch came from.

An Irish Blessing
(A Blessing from St. Patrick)
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
This comes from a friend on another blog but is so very true
Happy St. Paddy’s day, mudpups..
have a safe one…
Raising a toast to ya…
Here’s to a long life and a merry one…
A quik death and an easy one…
Happy St. Paddy’s !
South Buffalo is Buffalo’s Irish center. Big Irish population for generations and St. Paddy’s is a high holy day around here. Parties and parades began on Friday and haven’t stopped.
Waving to all of the area mudpup locals who are out at the Buffalo Irish Center or any of the pubs tonight!
New Kitten update : They’re becoming more adorable by the hour. All 4 of them have become quite good at using their claws to dig in. ( you wouldn’t think that claws on a being that’s only 5 inches long could have much impact but dang – they do!)
laffin at buffy’s kittehs!
YAY for healthy kitties! Are they getting good Irish names?
May those who love us, love us,
and those who do not love us,
may God turn their hearts,
and if He cannot turn their hearts
may He turn their ankles
that we may know them by their limping.
Happy St Patrick’s Day to all!
I’ll be out the next two nights so I’ll have to save my corned beef dinner for the weekend. I might even spring for a Smithwick’s or two which I will happily raise in toast to all the Irish, and Irish-in-Spirit, here at the Mudflats.
To Irishgirl and anyone else here who might currently be residing on the Emerald Isle, please take a deep breath of that sweet Irish air for me!
For anyone that wants to take a step back in time ( through the L ooking Glass)to review the past here is a little video clip I stumbled across last night. This is from a TV broadcast (from Pennsylvania ) just ONE DAY after MCGrumpy selected ‘ HER ‘.
It was quite interesting. Especially when the News announcer ( at about 1:25 )talks about his choice for VP… Sarah and ” DOUG ” Palin ….I listened a couple of times. I know she was unknown in the lower 48 at that time but you would think the Press release might have the correct name ..maybe..?
In the future…is that why they went with ” The First Dude “..?.. instead of DOUG.
And Biden had been in the Senate for years. Not a new name in the Media.
What was his excuse there. At about 3:15 I could swear he introduces Obama and ” Beaver ” at the end of the clip. No way it sounds like Biden.

I’m so late to the party, but just saw this and wanted to share!
The song mentions the Hockey Mom & McCain too.
Hilarious.
