Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Sean Parnell on The Shannyn Moore Show

Today is a “must hear” on The Shannyn Moore Show on KUDO 1080am.  Governor Sean Parnell will by Shannyn’s guest at 11:30.  He’s there to discuss Alaska’s high levels of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Stream it HERE.

Also today is the confirmation hearing for Al Barrette to sit on the Alaska Board of Game.  We will find out if the Legislature supports the radical predator eradication policies of Barrette, and the effect these draconian practices of aerial wolf hunting, the eradication of the buffer zone around Denali Park, snaring of brown and black bears,  shooting of sows and cubs and gassing wolf pups.  I don’t know how this one will end up, but we should know by the end of the show.

*****************************

This came in from Mudflatter Carol after she attended the “Choose Respect” rally earlier in the month.

Empty Chairs at “Choose Respect”

The empty chairs at the rally for justice
for me, represented some of the ones
who didn’t make it
because they were silenced forever
by their perpetrator,
either in death or in death while still walking
and as each speaker said their thing
in favor of a plan
that was designed to keep those chairs full
instead we were all avoiding those chairs
each walking/ignoring the significance of those empty chairs
caused by silence
they were ignored by all as each cried out for justice
up at the podium
crying out at Town Square
then after that more silence
as victims kept quiet
and the chairs were folded
and put away
until next election

********************************

The Governor said that there are 100 Alaskan villages with no law enforcement presence.  If you call for law enforcement, nobody will get there for days.  He’s asked for 15 new VPSOs for 15 villages, and allso funding for additional troopers.  Confident Legislators will come forward with funding, and he plans to increase the number by 15 per year for the next ten years.

Shannyn asked him since he’s concerned about the cruise ship tax of $60 discouraging tourism, what does he have to say about the perception of tourists regarding Alaska’s predator control policies.  Boycotts are already being organized, and small businesses will feel the pinch.

Parnell said that this is “a factor that needs to be considered along the way.”  He said we also need to consider that “this is a complicated issue and you’re right to raise that and determine how we might raise that.”

Hmm.  I’d call that a non-answer to a pretty legitimate question.

He went on to say that he expects the Board of Game to consider scientific perspectives as well as public comment. When people look at the board of game they need to remember that he’s made two appointments.  He reappointed Grussendorf.  He has not hunted for years. He’s a bird watcher and has a sense for balance and he has a rational voice.  Look at the facts but we shouldn’t say that the board is “stacked.”

Well, we’d all EXPECT the Board of Game to do that.  But they don’t.

No no to Barrette. But with our mostly spineless Legislature, it’s likely he will be confirmed. The Alaska Dispatch had a great little write up by how Alaskans deal with politics. I definitely found some truth in there:

I think if these unciviliaed killings take place, then word will get out quickly and Alaska will lose many tourists who happen to enjoy and care for animals. I know I’ll do my best to let tour companies and their customers know.

The episode with Steve Flory described on Shannyn’s website is just plain appalling -

Words fail me that this cowardly swine could be on the Anchorage Advisory Committee. Ugh. And ugh again.

Another comment by Shanny caught my eye, regarding the pro-Barrette statement from the dominionist group hiding under the name Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife:

“They could have summed up all 11 talking points in one: Al is a smart, nice family man who studies the issues, respects the land and wildlife, and camps! Nothing about his experience, his education, or anything that documents what he has actually done!”

That was exactly what struck be after listenting to Al Barrette’s opening statement about himself in the Monday hearing before the House committee – he blabbed on and on about his family life, his kids’ rather modest educational achievements, that his wife and daughter quilt, and that he likes to hunt and trap. He didn’t actually use the phrase “god-fearing Rill Alaskan,” but it was a near miss.

I am amazed by the types of wildlife you all have in your state. Polar bears! Beluga whales!
    Wolves!
How lucky you are to be able to co-exist with these magical creatures! Unfortunately there are many in your state that do not want to co-exist with these animals, they prefer to see them on a plaque in the study!
I hope for the animals sake you can get a little balance on your BOG. Sounds like this guy,Barrette, is a sadistic animal himself! Animal traps are a barbaric, disgusting way to “control” wildlife.

As someone who lives in one of those villages—

How many of those law enforcement have been driven out by the villagers or the councils?

When you live as a VPSO it is EXTREMELY hard to enforce the laws evenly IF the council wants you to ignore their family members!!!

The issues are not simple nor easily solved!

Celebration Day! Letters and emails *do* work (though not always). In that spirit, I ask you to contact http://www.stoppebble.org or any of the other organizations that have petitions to be delivered to the board of Anglo-American when they meet on (!) Earth Day. Let’s drown them in petitions and prevent this travesty. I don’t eat critters, but so many eat seafood from Bristol Bay and environs that this just. can’t. happen.

    Health and peace.

If Governor Parnell is so worked up over ” Choosing Respect ” how come he doesn’t say or do anything in his official capacity about Steve Florey. This is a perpetrator of violence against women.

Isn’t this guy the candidate of Rick-The-Defender-Of-The-Corrupt-Rydell?

    AND PARNELL IS SILENT!!!
