Open Thread – Tancredo’s Little Devil

Here’s a screen capture of former Rep. Tom Tancredo talking on the Daily Show about the fact that Arizona has just gone too far with its immigration reform legislation. Having Tom Tancredo tell you you’ve gone too far with your immigration policies is like having David Duke call you a racist.

Be that as it may, I thought it was interesting to look at the “little devil” that sits on his shoulder. OK, it’s not a little devil… It’s just a copy of Going Rogue sitting on the ledge like an objet d’art. The author of that book, apparently does not share Mr. Tancredo’s sentiments regarding the bill. “More power to her” was the quote from Palin about Arizona’s governor who signed the bill into law this week.

Don’t listen to the voice Mr. Tancredo!

Cracks me up! So funny, but from the short time she’s been the public eye, she’s racked-up quite a record of destruction regarding other the careers and reputations of other people.

Palin reminds me of President Reagan in that he was the first Teflon politician of my lifetime. If those of you who are old enough to remember think back – and everyone else grab an ancient history text – if something went wrong, he came out fine but some member of his team or administration would be stuck with the error and resign. As I recall, he went through cabinet members like tissues.

People who get too close to Palin seem to disappear from the public limelight in disgrace or at least with bumps and bruises to their public personas. If only she would fray and fade in the same way.

Love the devil on his shoulder comment because it is so appropriate to the way I think of her.

There was a little book published called “Ronald Reagan’s Reign of Error.” The first edition just published what RR said, and what the truth was (always distant from fact). The second edition told what he said, what the truth was, and what his White House spokespeople, when confronted with the facts, said about it (or what they said he’d meant). Like Palin, the media let Ronnie Raygun get away with lie after lie, without consequences.

I have been all over about this complaining about illegal aliens and it seems no one wants to go after those who hire them. Why not.If they are going after the illegals they should also go after those who hire them.Best to start with their own politicians as many have been caught with Illegals and using them like slaves. It takes both the illegals entering and those who hire them to keep them here. Why is no one saying anything about those who bring people into this country and use them to make a profit???I have too many times seen these people doing what the majority will never do even though they claim they would. If these people are working they are paying taxes somehow unless they are working for someone that is not honest.

The sad fact is that most illegal workers do have taxes taken out of their checks. The Social Security and Medicare money go to someone else’s SS account and the withholding never gets collected. This country needs to understand that the millions of illegal workers in the country provide a lot of money for the government, do the jobs most white boys and girls won’t do, and are glad to have the job they have. I totally agree with you about the employers. If there were some serious fines, in the many thousands, and operating licenses revoked, for hiring even one illegal worker this problem would stop quickly. But who will do that, Arizona??

I’m more inclined to say adorable. She may not have used skillful wording, but she got the idea right – Respect My Feelings, Daddy. By the time our youngest daughter was a year-and-a-half old, she would give me stern lectures whenever I hurt her feelings. I couldn’t understand much of the verbiage, but her body language and tone were unmistakable. I never discouraged her from doing that, and my apology and a hug were of immeasurable value to her in validating her sense of self and what was right – and we were cool again, and she was stronger, and our respect for each other grew. When she was in third grade, her teacher sent us a charming note describing being confronted by our daughter one day, and ended it with, “I don’t know what you’re feeding that little girl, but keep it up!” She’s still confrontational when she deems it appropriate, and still speaking truth to power. I shudder to think that I could have destroyed the confidence behind that by forcing her to be submissive to authority when she knew it was wrong because it felt wrong.

So I hope the little girl who left her daddy the note got a hug and acknowledgment that she was right to be confrontational when she felt disrespected. She’s old enough, too, to benefit from learning appropriate conflict resolution. May she continue to stand up for herself and speak truth to power.

Instead she wrote a note about her feelings. Sure, the ending sounds kind of ominous from an adult point of view, but how many eight year olds know nuance? How many eight years olds can sit down and write a thoughtful letter detailing how they were disappointed and hurt and don’t want to be treated like that again? Kids have simplistic minds. It seemed she felt Dad was putting TV before time with her.”

Gubnor Goodhair Perry also anointed Glenn Beck as an honorary Texan last weekend at one of those Teabonics get-togethers in Tyler, TX. Rick has other pressing issues to deal with like an addition to the Governor’s Mansion and a $5-8 billion (yup, Billion) deficit that he and the Legislature are trying to wrap their arms around. Rick doesn’t want to raise taxes but since he was a stellar dipshit in 2006 and played Mr. Tax Cut when the economy was strong, that little act of malfeasance is going to cost all of Texans.

Jon Stewart said it best about Tancredo: The Mexican parents use a picture of him to scare their children into eating their vegetables. The fact that he has “Mrs. You Betcha’s” book confirms he’s another whack job, Obama birth certificate challenging pin head.

As I said on HuffPo – anyone who is saying this immigration law won’t involve ethnic profiling is either lying or an imbecile. Or in Palin’s case – both. We don’t have a problem in Arizona with the illegal immigration of Canadians or Europeans. Our illegal immigrants are Hispanic. The entire focus of the law begins and ends with Hispanics. That sounds like a profile to me.

That’s a great picture, and so telling. I have to admit that I’m a bit confused by his stand on the issue. It seems out of character – wasn’t he the one complaining that we should have a literacy test to get rid of those who can’t spell “vote”?

I completely disagree with what Arizona has done, but I get it – they share a border with a foreign country and people sneaking in is a problem. Washington state and a number of other states share a border with a foreign country as well, but I don’t think anyone is too worried about Canadians sneaking in. More likely, it’s Americans sneaking over the border to Canada.

But I don’t understand why Utah is considering something like this. They are surrounded by other US states. So who are they worried about? Do illegals really try to go live in Utah?

If what Lainey suggested doesn’t work, I’d check with the vet. I understand that sometimes an infection can make cats start doing that.

    • 19.3

califpat: take a stool sample to the vet for a parasite check. That’s a possibility. Also, keep the litter immaculately clean. Bleach the box first, then change to a brand with no smell, or if you’re buying one without smell now, change to one with a smell. Two boxes is also a reasonable thing to try.

Also, it’s crucial to bleach the area where they have been “missing” the box. If they smell residue, they’ll think it’s ok. No Pine Sol around cats. Clean with something else and use diluted bleach to rinse. That should help.

  20. 20

Just had a thought about the immigration bill in AZ. How about this? Every time they ask someone for their “papers”, they also ask them who they are working for in this country. Then, the employers who are hiring the immigrants at $2.00 an hour (or less in some cases, I bet) will be rooted out. That is where half the problem lies. Cheap labor. Illlegal labor.

As a nouveau Arizonan, i.e. not born here but living here, this law has all the aroma of a dead fish. A thoroughly dead, rotting carcass that isn’t dried out yet, simply in the prime of its (dead) existence.

This state, as a whole, has profited from the presence of the illegal aliens for many, many years, as they worked in the fields, on the construction sites, and in businesses all around the state. Many of the millionaires and wealthier folk have had no problem paying rock-bottom wages with no pesky taxes to pay, no need to pay any benefits, and all the resulting ‘illegal’ profits to take home. This has been going for so many decades, it has simply been the way of life here. It isn’t something that happened in the last ten years, it is more like the last 80 to 100 years.

Is it profiling? YES, plain and simple. It will be interesting to see how strict enforcement is, if it does manage to pass the Federal, constitutional smell-test. Already the Pima County Sheriff (Tucson is the county seat) has declared that he will enforce it only if he is forced to. And so the revolt begins…
