Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Thanks to Sarah Palin, it’s “Oh Crap, What Did We Do?” Eve at The Discovery Channel

What were they thinking?  Good question.  Discovery Communications obviously missed that whole “Sarah Palin is toxic to everything she touches” memo that went out. The creation of Sarah Palin’s new wildlife show on The Discovery Channel was like watching a baby about to suck on a lemon, or your best friend walking down the aisle with a total bonehead.  You just want to yell, “Nooooo!  Don’t do it!” but its too late.  Sometimes people must just learn their own lessons.

Behold the Discovery Channel’s lemon slice and bonehead fiance all rolled into one:

It has been said over and over by her former opponents in Alaska, “Don’t underestimate Sarah Palin.” I would submit that you should also not underestimate those who do not underestimate Sarah Palin. The campaign against the Discovery Channel’s new program “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” which features one of the most infamous and controversial wildlife eradicating ex-half-governors on the planet, has been stunning.

Apparently many people were paying attention, and found it a tad ironic that someone who was involved in suing the federal government over listing polar bears and Cook Inlet beluga whales as threatened species, encouraging the aerial hunting of wolves, gassing of wolf pups, snaring of bears, and shooting cubs should have a warm fuzzy “ain’t it beautiful” show on the Discovery Channel. After all, the last nice thing we heard from Palin about Alaska wildlife was in her book Going Rogue where she told us how great wildlife was… next to the mashed potatoes. Now she’s on some kind of metaphorical beach walk, stepping gingerly over the bodies of sea turtles in her Naughty Monkey pumps telling us to keep drillin’ because “every human endeavor involves risk.”

An online petition has already garnered more than half a million signatures in opposition to the program. The Facebook pages and Twitter feeds of Animal Planet, Discovery, and TLC have been swamped with comments of outrage. Now, the latest protest has come in the shape of bus shelter ads, metro station ads, and even a giant banner. all surrounding the headquarters of Discovery, just in time for their shareholders meeting on May 5. Ouch.

Defenders of Wildlife has led the charge in an attempt to get Discovery to drop the show. Their action page contains links to the petition site, and links to share the story via a variety of social media. Join the party HERE.

Use a half cup less flour and add one cup (dry) rolled oats. Perfect every time. Especially if you leave in the choc chips and walnuts!

(BTW, don’t pre-cook the oatmeal. The best results come from using rolled oats – the oats you’d use to make the kids brekkie – and use them dry, right out of the box.)

            Good luck!

A few weeks later I asked him how his baked potato came out. He said “fine, but I can’t get the soap taste off the skin. You TOLD me to wash it!”

          • 3.1.3.1.3

Or you can do what I do – use the recipe on the back of the Nestle’s semi-sweet chocolate chip package and leave out all the ingredients except the chocolate chips. Yum. My favorite snack and I cut the calories by just having the chocolate chips. ;-)

Now after seeing the D of W’s ad, maybe that’s not too far off the mark.

I too hope they listen. I am sooooooo tired of having to say “I told you so!” when it comes to SP, because if they would just listen to us, it would save them a lot of time and money and then they wouldn’t have to raise their advertising rates (causing those product prices to increase) and the companies wouldn’t have to up your monthly charges (or at least not so much so fast) causing you to drop them and go back to rabbit ears which suits you fine because you know ABC, CBS and NBC all had the good sense to tell her to go take a metaphorical if not literal hike.

This is capitalism at work. Palin of course will miss the connection.

The product on offer is a show on Discovery Channel with Palin, the consumers are clearly not happy. The shareholders will in turn have to weigh risking Discovery’s stock price falling and them losing money on their portfolio. So….will they stay with the product? Or listen to the consumers and supply something that everyone actually wants?

If they do not – then they lose customers and everyone, including Palin, loses money. Welcome to Capitalism, Sarah. The invisible hand of the market forces can, sometimes, smack you up side your head.

Please take a look at the Discovery website. While they sponsor many channels that feature fine nature programs (and some of my husband’s favorites “Mythbusters” and “How It’s Made”), they sponsor a number of channels and programs, good and bad.

Sarah’s program is headed to TLC, The Learning Channel. Now, please visit them, and see for yourself what a bunch of TV schlock they pass off as “learning.” There is little on The Learning Channel that mirrors the nature programming on the other channels.

I wish that the dead wolves had traction over at TLC, but considering their other subject matter, the wolves will be a hit. I think that we also have to direct our efforts at refusing to buy anything that their sponsors are offering. Moral issues, yes, and pocket book issues, yes, also, too.

I agree. Threatening to boycott the sponsors would get more attention than just boycotting the show.

This is about the Discovery Channel committing fraud by producing a nature show with Sarah Palin.
If they wanted to give her a hunting show on the outdoor network, it would at least be honest.

The bottom line is she is intentionally extremely divisive. Any business that wants to give her money and visibility should be made aware that she offends many people. They need to consider how that reflects on their product.

PHOENIX — Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin will soon be returning to the Valley, this time as the keynote speaker for the Arizona Sportsmen for Wildlife Conservations Second Annual Heritage Banquet.

Governor Palin, who is also an avid hunter and angler, will share her views on wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting Arizona’s hunting and fishing heritage for future generations of sportsmen.

Pete Cimellaro, the Heritage Banquet Chairman, said that there is perhaps no one better than Palin to speak about their organization’s goals and to serve as a role model for women and families to participate in the state’s wildlife conservation efforts.

Cimellaro praises Palin’s successes in showing the country that hunting, fishing and conservation is an important part of the lives of millions of Americans.

The event will take place at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa on Saturday, May 15 with the dinner program starting at 5:30 p.m.

I thought the same thing when I saw Avatar. I’m sure that Cameron had some very specific real people in mind for the various characters, especially the evil ones pretending to be the good guys. It was masterful. But I don’t think fans of SP or Bush or their ilk saw the parallel. They seem blinded to any criticism of their idols, so I’m not sure they will actually believe anything on the posters about Sarah.

However, the sponsors might pay more attention – that comes down to dollars for them as well. And if that’s what it takes (boycotting them), then we need a list.

My favorite line of hers is when she says she’s “representing the typical, hard-working American.” No kidding? I don’t anyone who made 12 million dollars in nine months by telling lies in stilettos. I don’t know anyone with a special needs toddler who leaves him thousands of miles away with her sister to raise. I don’t know anyone who does so little for so much money. I don’t know anyone who thinks so little of this country that they belittle the elected government every time they open their mouth. Only Queen Sarah.

As if most of the people on this thread won’t watch at least one episode of the show. It’s like a train wreck, you can’t possibly look away. I am certain we’ll be treated to highlights on themudflats as well.

The real question is whether a sponsor would like their brand associated with a train wreck. And whether the Discovery Channel would like a nature show sponsored by a gun company. Or whether an outdoors equipment manufacturer wants their backpacks and outerwear associated with a gun-nut hunter.
