A Sad Day. Condolences to Linda Kellen Biegel and Her Family…

It was a sad day for our contributing editor Linda Kellen Biegel (aka CelticDiva) and her family.  It is always sad to lose a four-legged family member, but the loss is so much worse when they’re so young, and they leave the world in such a tragic way.

Adorable little Katy, the family’s Sheltie puppy was attacked and killed today by an unleashed, uncollared pit bull that charged from across the street.  Despite the best efforts of Linda, and her family who were present during the attack, and the vets who tried their hardest, they were unable to save her.  Things like this seem so unfair, and we grapple to make sense of why, when we do everything right, things like this can still happen.

Some things are unexplainable. But I do know one thing.  If I were a pup who was here on this Earth for only a few short months, I cannot think of a family I would rather have been with.

Rest in peace, Katy.  You were loved.

Please use this thread to send messages of condolence and support to Linda and her family on their terrible loss.

As someone who has dogs for years, and yes they are part of the family, I cannot even begin the fathom the grief Linda and her family must be feeling. My heart goes out to Linda and her family. I have held two of my dogs in their final moments while the vet released them from their pain, but they were well into their teens, and it was their time. And I cried for days both times. To lose a pet this way, because of what another did or didn’t do in regards to the other dog, is tragic. Stay strong, Linda. The mudflatters are here for you.

Thank you, Vic…we just put my daughter to sleep in our room–we can’t sleep yet. Josh’s grief is being expressed in terrible anger right now and we’ve talked about what we’re going to do. It’s hard…the only thing we really want is our dog back.

The worst thing is that we (especially Morrigan) saw it all. It’s going to take awhile to get those awful sights and sounds out of our heads.

That’s absolutely awful Linda – I am angry, too and I”m not even there. I’m heartbroken for your family. No one should have to go through that! My old dog was attacked (from behind, out of the blue) in my neighborhood by an dog down the street which they were trying to rehabilitate after emotional trauma, and I was surprised at the level of my protectiveness and anger. Had it been that type of dog who doesn’t let go, I can’t even imagine how berserk I would have gotten as I barely remember now what I did to intervene and somehow we were all OK in the end.

I am so sad about this! Bless your generosity of spirit, and the love you have for your family and critters who make our lives richer. Let it carry you through this, and please let me know if there is anything I can do.

My family has had American Staffordshire Terriers (AmStaffs aka pitbulls here in the USA).
It’s not the breed, it’s the owner.
I know that sounds like a meme, but it is completely true. Our AmStaffs were all complete sweethearts, EXTREMELY good with children, and just all-around great dogs.
I still grieve for our last one, CD, who we had to euthanize a few years ago when his cancer got completely out of control. We still have his son (who is now about 14 years old and starting to have serious health probs of his own) and he’s the last of a wonderful line of dogs stretching back four decades.

          luckycharmsNo Gravatar says:

I think we should all be able to agree that it’s a combination of breed and owner. Pit bulls in the right hands are one kind of dog. In the wrong hands they are another. Just like German Shepherds and other breeds. But I think that owners who seek an ‘attack-type dog’ or just one that is perceived to be that way often get pit bulls because other people think they are scary. It’s a power thing, or a testosterone thing, or a “don’t mess with me” thing. And that’s a shame all around because if you want a scary attack dog, you’ll get one. It’s a self-fulfilling prophesy.

It’s like saying red sports cars are more dangerous. Well, yes because they’re small and fast, but also yes because people who are attracted to them can tend to be reckless drivers and risk takers.

And to have an unleashed, uncollared dog with these tendencies running around a neighborhood? Inexcusable. It’s going to have to be a toddler before anyone takes it seriously.

Many condolences to you Linda, and your family. Our hearts go out to you.

When the animal control officer asked me if it was OK to “classify the (other) dog,” I explained to him that if I had my choice, it’s the owners that should be “classified.”

Under “17.40.020 Classifications and exceptions to classification of animals” has been classified as a “Level 4″ out of 5:

“4. Level four behavior is established if any of the following occur:
      a. An unrestrained animal inflicts an aggressive bite or causes physical injury to any human; or
      b. An unrestrained animal kills a domestic animal that is restrained;”

According to animal control, the most they can fine the owners this time is $50.00. After it’s “classified” it will be more “the next time.”

      God…the next time?

        Linda,

I am crying as I type this because the story of your loss has re-opened the wound from our own recent loss. So sorry to hear about your Katy’s sudden death in such a tragic way. Sending you my best banshee hugs.

We are still grieving for Buddy, our ten-year-old golden retriever that we lost to cancer a little over two months ago. Fortunately for us, and him, we were able to send him across the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by those who loved him and were able to say a loving goodbye. Sometime we will get our “next dog” not as a replacement, but as a loving companion. No one will ever fill the “Buddy” hole in our hearts, but our “next dog” will create its own niche there. We are dog people — and there will always be a dog in our life, I hope.

My brother-in-law has a pit bull that is the gentlest creature, a fixture on the college campus where the in-laws teach. Stripe accompanies them everywhere because he suffers from separation anxiety when left at home. So it is not necessarily the breed, but the owner.

However, now that your neighbor’s pit bull has demonstrated that it will engage in violent unprovoked attack — and your neighbors appear to behave irresponsibly — you might well consider allowing the dog in question to be “classified” as a way of protecting another dog, or, heaven forbid, a toddler from a similar attack. In our area, a “classified” dog is required to be restrained at all times and kept in a secure fenced yard that is posted with a sign stating that there is a “dangerous dog” present. You will certainly breathe easier — and also will not suffer remorse if the dog attacks again and you could have done more to prevent it from happening.

I was blown away when I came back here tonight and discovered all of the additional comments. Thank you, thank you for your thoughts and prayers!

Tonight, we made a fire in the fire pit and our family talked about all of the happiness Katy brought to us in the last four short months. There were tears and laughter and I felt like it was one more step in helping us heal…especially my daughter, who is now learning firsthand about “flashbacks.”

The bad news…the owners of the dog have decided to defy a Municipal Order to surrender the dog to Animal Control. The deadline was COB today. I don’t yet know what that could mean, other than surely other dogs (and maybe people) are at risk while this dog is out.

          • 19.2.4.1.1
            bluebansheeNo Gravatar says:

These dog owners are seriously deranged and heedlessly putting themselves and others at risk. I sincerely hope there are no young children in that family because they could be in danger. That dog must, repeat, MUST be kept under control at all times. You may have to file a complaint or even a lawsuit to protect others from this dog. These owners are willfully endangering the safety of small children and pets by this behavior.

    • 19.3
      MichelleNo Gravatar says:

In general I’m against breed specific bans because it is too easy to lump perfectly wonderful dogs in with poorly behaved dogs, and generally the dog is poorly behaved due to it’s owner and not it’s breed.

Having had a small scare with a pit bull yesterday myself, I do believe there are some breeds for which ownership should require special licensing and/or education required of the owner/handler. Unfortunately, we really don’t have an effective way to regulate something like that.

      • 19.3.1
        mtviewchildNo Gravatar says:

It should be required that all pet pit bulls be neutered/spayed. This would reduce their aggression as well as their numbers. The majority of homeless dogs in kill shelters are pits and pit mixes, and they are put to death. They are also the most abused of all dog breeds, often ending up in violent or neglectful homes or as victims of the fighting trade. It is not fair to them to be born into a world without decent homes for them.

We once rescued a stray pit bull girl PUPPY. She was very sweet and we, especially my husband, adored her. But after this PUPPY twice silently lunged for and grabbed our standard poodle’s throat, we knew we would not be able to trust her around our little cockapoo or kitties, either, and we found a home where she would be the only pet.

Also, good dog owner does not always equal good pet. We’ve all known people who were great parents, but maybe had one child with unexplainable negative behavior. It can be the same way with our dogs, and all the love and care in the world sometimes will not change this.

Linda, I’m so sorry to hear of your family’s loss. I remember when our cocker spaniel was attacked by the boxer across the street. My mom, all 98 pounds of her, managed to grab the boxer’s choke chain and twist until he let go. Our neighbor who was in a leg and arm cast was able to put our dog in the car to keep the boxer from attacking again. Our family has always had pets and loved them as part of the family. We were lucky that our dog was OK. But it was terrifying to watch. And I understood the severity of the whole thing when my mom talked to the owners who realized their dog (with a bad bite that kept him from killing our dog) could have attacked a child. They chose to euthenize him, much to the relief of the whole neighborhood.

I believe this poem says so much of the love between a dog and its people:

The House Dog’s Grave (Haig, an English bulldog)

I’ve changed my ways a little; I cannot now
Run with you in the evenings along the shore,
Except in a kind of dream; and you, if you dream a moment,
    You see me there.

So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front door
Where I used to scratch to go out or in,
And you’d soon open; leave on the kitchen floor
    The marks of my drinking-pan.

I cannot lie by your fire as I used to do
    On the warm stone,
Nor at the foot of your bed; no, all the night through
    I lie alone.

But your kind thought has laid me less than six feet
Outside your window where firelight so often plays,
And where you sit to read–and I fear often grieving for me–
Every night your lamplight lies on my place.

You, man and woman, live so long, it is hard
To think of you ever dying
A little dog would get tired, living so long.
I hope than when you are lying

Under the ground like me your lives will appear
As good and joyful as mine.
No, dear, that’s too much hope: you are not so well cared for
    As I have been.

And never have known the passionate undivided
    Fidelities that I knew.
Your minds are perhaps too active, too many-sided. . . .
But to me you were true.

You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.
I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love endures
To the end and far past the end. If this is my end,
I am not lonely. I am not afraid. I am still yours.

Linda, Josh & Morrigan – I am so sorry to hear about your precious little Katy. It is so hard to lose a dog and even worse under those circumstances. We had a black lab who was shot by someone years ago – we never found out who did it, which was better than what you are currently dealing with. The anger is the worst part and the constant reminders since it happened so close to your home. We had just moved to our house when Sam was shot and I felt like selling it & moving out right away.

I understand what your family is going through and it really is a horrible situation. I hope that the owners of the other dog are at least remorseful, regardless of what you decide to do. Certainly they should be held accountable in some way, there is just no excuse for aggressive dogs to be uncollared & unleashed. Again – I am truly sorry for your loss.

Fortunately, the Great Dane’s bite only broke the skin and bit into the the shoulder blades. This saved Jessie. We rushed Jessie to the vet and the Great Dane owner came too. Martha–it’s actually been hard but we’re doing OK–I left a comment above talking about how we are trying to mourn/celebrate our time with Katy. I’m so sorry for your loss and the additional burden of witnessing it. I completely agree that it’s the owner/environment that causes other dogs to behave so badly.

Pit bulls are fairly common here, and I had to ask what breed they were when a pair of super-friendly ones greeted me outside a bookstore (I have the “dog gene”). It’s an owner’s responsibility to keep anti-social dogs away from other people and their animals.

    ((((((((Linda and family)))))))
I am so sorry for your loss. There are really no words to say that can lessen the sadness (and rage) that you are feeling right now. As I have said here before, my dear husband puts it this way: Our dogs steal our hearts and give us theirs. That is why you feel that heart is gone when you lose them. But even though your time with her was short you have been given a gift of their heart as well and you will never lose that.

I understand the anger that your husband must feel at the owners of the other dog. I owned big and loving dogs that were other dog aggressive and they were never allowed off leash (or out of harness) outside of our fenced yard for that very reason. I get angry every time I see any dog running loose because it is irresponsible on the owners part (not only for other dogs and people but for their own dog). It is hard to accept that our beloved animals can (for reasons unbeknownst to us) suddenly revert to the wild form that lies just below the surface in their genetic makeup.

I hope that your daughter is OK. This is particularly hard for someone young to witness.

I believe that our dogs have souls (in fact many have very old souls). Like us, they come here to learn what they need to learn and then they leave us. This sometimes helps me when they leave us too soon.

Gentle blessings on you and your family.

I do not understand people who own pit bulls. They were bred to destroy. Some here might have one, and this might make you angry, but they are NOT pets and , IMHO, should be banned completely.
“Some are nice–blah blah blah”–I am so sick of hearing that. They are not reliable, too strong for any human to control, and, frankly, often owned by people with no brains.

Dear Diva and family My heartfelt sympathy to you all. My lovely little beagle was attacked in her own back yard by a pitbull and a German shepherd.Luckily, one of my wonderful neighbors was working in his yard and raced over with a shovel in his hand and beat them off of her.She was injured and traumatized. The dogs’ owner paid all $400 vet bills and called many times to ask how Charlotte was doing. Here in Pa we have what’s called a “dog law” officer and I was asked if I wanted the owner fined (he was fined, but I could have had the amount increased) and the dogs destroyed. I said, no (cause I’m a pushover for a sad story). I would never keep a dog that has attacked another animal or bitten a person.

After expressing my condolences last night I gave this situation a lot of thought today & after reading the comments, I feel like weighing in on the whole breed argument. I wondered today why it always seems to be Pit Bulls who frequently attack both children & other dogs. Responsible people who own this breed invariably defend them & blame the irresponsible owners.
I have come to this conclusion. There are people in this world who either want to be or think they are bad asses, so they look for what they think is a bad ass dog to own. Given the history of the breed, Pit Bulls fit the bill and many people who own this breed encourage the aggressive nature of the dog. Of course aggressive behavior can be encouraged in any breed, however, sadly for them, Pit Bulls are often chosen by people for that purpose. I have a family member who owns the sweetest, most lovable Pit Bull, but then she did not train her dog to be aggressive.

To Diva & family, 2 months after our dog was killed (he was 7 yrs old) we adopted a puppy and although I felt I was not ready it was the best decision we made. Another dog will never replace Katy but he or she will fill the hole in your hearts. I guarantee it.

    • 98.1

I think you hit the nail on the head regarding the breed argument. I’ve had several dog experts tell me that from my description, the behavior exhibited by that dog sounds like he was bred to dog fight. They use puppies in the training so it wouldn’t be surprising that puppies playing would act as a magnet.

I think there is a special place in hell for people like that.

Just to let you know, we went to the pound today just to drop off paperwork and to get a puppy fix. Morrigan and the girl we are watching for the summer had a fine time, I broke down…I’m not ready. However, we all agree that in a month or so we’ll see how we feel.

I know that “just going by to pet the dogs” story! When we lost our dear forever dog to old age, I wasn’t ready for a new dog yet, either. I knew I wanted one, but was going to wait a few months for several reasons. I was heartbroken, I was tired from the intensive care, I needed to honor the memory of the best friend I’d ever had. Hubby did the pet dogs thing, and a couple week later, we had a new dog! Hubby knew that there was one question I could ask, and one answer he could give, that would allow him to bring a new dog home no matter what I felt or thought.

“Is that dog THE ONE? The one like my best friend?”

        “Yes”.

    wonkieNo Gravatar says:

I am very sorry for the loss of the puppy and also grieved that the family had to see the attack– a very traumatic experience.

Breed bans, howewver, are not a good idea. In fact breed bans are a form of abuse. Because of breed bans good family pets that never hurt anyone get euthaized. Anyone who cares about dogs or children should care about that.

Pitbulls were bred to be dog aggressive and people social. The breed does have a tendency to be aggressive toward small animals (actually all the terrier breeds have this tendency as do the breeds that were bred to hunt bears, deer, etc. Face it: many, many dogs have a preditory atitude toward smaller creatures.)

According the AKC temperament testing done on breeds annually American pitbull terriers are as people social as golden retreivers. There is a reason for this: if you were going to breed a dog to be a tenacious fighter, wouldn’t you want to breed the dog to be controllable by you? Pits that turned their fighting skills on people were culled out. Pure bred pitbull terriers are one of the few breed that won’t attack a human when over excited by a dog fight.

So why the scarey news stories abouut the evil pitbull? Middle class Americans always have a boogeydog to fear and the boogeydog of our middle class imaginations is the dog associated with the poor, the trailer trash or ghetto dog, the dog that lives on a chain in the back yard. In the fiities that dog was the German shepard, then it was the rotties, next the dobies, now the pits.

According to the Humane Societ the dog that bites is the unsocialized unnuetered male dog that lives on a chain in the backyard. The type of breed most likely to be treated that way right now is the pit.

About 2% of the population gets bit by a dog each year. The about half of the bites come from mix breed dogs. The rest of the bites come from thirty to forty other breeds of which pits, dobies, rotts, huskies, great danes, shar peis, chows, german shepards and akitas are the top ten. There are about two million pits in the US. The number of them that bite people is statistically insignificant. If the news media reported every great dane bite incident we would all be afraid of great danes and not worry about pits at all.

On the other hand the vast majority of dog abuse cases involve pits, only one out of every seven hundred pits in a shelter gets adopted and pits are one of the most common dogs exploited by back yard breeders. So why are we afraid of them? They have moar more reason to be afraid of us.

Remember Micheal Vick? About forty pitbulls were rescued from his dog fighting kennnel. Only one as euthanized for aggression. The rest were people social the day they were rescued and the majority were dog social. Three are now trained service dogs.

Human beings claim to be an intelligent form of life. Sure can’t see that in how we treat animals. The people who owned that pit who attacked the puppy should have known their dog had a strong prey drive and should have had it on a leash or a fenced yard or better yet in the house. Our job as intelligent people who care about animals is to refrain from blaming a breed for the neglectful behavior of people.
