Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Sarah Palin’s High Stakes Gamble in Her Home State and Why She Will Lose

After the recent primary defeats of two long-term Republicans (I am still refusing to call Arlen Specter a Democrat), and considering the interesting and tumultuous political times in which we live, the question arises -who’s next?  Any other political heads on the chopping block this season?  Politico asked this question back at the beginning of June.

The answer, if there is one, is likely to come from a handful of Western primaries at summer’s end that could further shake up a Senate chamber already unnerved by the defeats of two longtime incumbents, Sen. Robert Bennett, a Utah Republican, and Sen. Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Democrat.

Even if Lincoln’s death-defying escape has them breathing a bit easier, two targets stand atop the list —Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado and Sen. John McCain of Arizona. A third wild-card race would be the Alaska seat held by GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

[snip]

While Murkowski appears to be in a different class than Bennet and McCain, the volatility of the 2010 cycle suggests the race could become competitive under certain conditions. Her primary challenger, attorney Joe Miller, already has the backing of fomer Gov. Sarah Palin. And Murkowski’s path to the Senate — she was appointed by her father, then-Gov. Frank Murkowski, in 2002 before winning the seat on her own in 2004 — still rankles some Republicans.

It rankles Democrats too, by the way.

So what does this mean?  It boils down to this -  Sarah Palin is a bad chess player.  She made a move, the outcome of which will make her a loser no matter what happens.  Palin is master of taking a benign situation, where simply ‘sitting down and shutting up’ would be the move of choice, and somehow turning it into a high-drama no-win situation.  Allow me to explain.

Palin has endorsed a Republican in the primary for the Senate Seat that is up for grabs this year.  Lisa Murkowski is a strong incumbent.  Her recent tendencies to be an out-of-the-closet oil company shill, and a “GOP Party girl” rather than a representative of her home state are causing some rumblings with Republicans, and with the Independents who keep her in office up here. But she is still a formidable candidate.  And as we know, despite the fact that Lisa Murkowski was the very first person to receive money from SarahPAC, she is not the candidate Palin has endorsed.

Palin has endorsed a Republican of the Tea Party ilk – a little known Fairbanks attorney and long time supporter Joe Miller.

Joe Miller likes Sarah Palin, and Sarah Palin likes him.  Lisa Murkowski does not like Sarah Palin, and Sarah Palin does not like her.  That’s really all it takes as far as anyone can tell, because Palin will apparently endorse the fringiest Tea Party candidate, or a radical corporatist Republican, or the most entrenched beltway elite - whatever the mood and the ulterior motivation of the day.  McCain? Miller? Fiorinna?  Whatever.

So, here are our two lose-lose scenarios.

#1) Palin has endorsed Miller.  Miller loses to Murkowski.  The rest of the country drops its collective jaw.  But…. but… that’s A-LAS-ka.  They love Sarah.  They know her.  How is it possible that her own home state, that she evokes at every turn, doesn’t care who she endorses for Senator?  How can they vote for the likes of Murkowski when the Queen of the North is displeased?  We thought she was popular and beloved!  And right before God and the nation, Sarah Palin’s home state magic is rendered impotent.

Sarah loses.

#2) Palin has endorsed Miller.  Miller wins.  This means, believe it or not, that she’s just radically increased the chances of Democrat Scott McAdams taking the seat. Why?  Because Alaska may be right leaning, but only small parts of the state are Tea Party right.  Most Alaskans are not idealogues, and the vast majority are neither Republicans nor Democrats. They are practical libertarians. They’re not going to cotton to some guy they’ve never heard of who was born in Kansas, and went to eelete Yale Law School telling them that the Tea Party is mainstream, government is the problem, and we’re all going to wake up tomorrow and be socialist Marxist leftist whatevers…

So maybe they give McAdams, the Alaskan born home town boy, the commercial fisherman, the popular small town Mayor, the “real Alaskan,”  a chance.

Sarah loses.  Again.

Palin is gambling that Miller will not only topple the incumbent, but will also take the general.  That’s some mighty long odds.  If that doesn’t happen, then she’s burned bridges with Murkowski forever and has egg on her face, or she’s dealing with the fact that her endorsement put another Democrat in the senate.  Well played.

But, we can only assume that for her to risk it all, she’s got to be pretty sure of Miller, and also pretty sure that tapping Miller on the head with her magic endorsement wand is going to have some real pull with Alaskans.

So, let’s see how that’s working out for her.  Hellenthal and Associates just released poll numbers for likely Republican primary voters. The poll was in the field from July 24 to July 25.

Drumroll please!

Senator Lisa Murkowski – 69%

Attorney Joe Miller – 28%

Well, so far it looks like Sarah Palin loses.  But we knew that already.

To play devil’s advocate and turn it around, if SP endorsed Murkowski and Murkowski won, it would prove nothing about SP and Murkowski wouldn’t owe her anything, since she would have won without SP’s endorsement, which I doubt she even asked for. If SP endorses no one and Murkowski wins, SP is even worse off. She is seen as a fence-sitting opportunist, or as having withheld her endorsement of Murkowski out of pettiness.

Only by playing the long shot does she have a chance, albeit a small one, of benefiting from it. Choice 1, no downside, no real upside either. Choice 2, downside, no upside. Choice 3, probable downside, possible upside. It’s a gamble, but not illogical, and she’s counting that “providence” will make one or more of her gambles pay off.

      Or some such.

Polls can be fixed, and voters can be fickle. 5. 5
    Simple MindNo Gravatar says:

Okay, I’ll play. I’ll respectfully disagree. I think Palin wins (at least draws) in most cases – because of the unique nature of her political appeal. There are three possible outcomes – Murkowski beats Miller in the primary, Miller beats Murkowski but loses to McAdams in the general, Miller wins it all. Pretty obvious that Palin hits a grand slam in case #3 – putting a bona fide wingnut who owes her big time into the US Senate. If Palin thought Miller had a shot, she surely isn’t putting any effort into help him do it outside of a stray tweet or two. Why isn’t she helping? Because Miller is just a sharp stick in Murkowski’s eye. So what if Miller loses to Murkowski – the most likely event? I think Palin also wins in this case. Why? First, she got her mean-girl shot in at Murkowski. But also, the essence of Palin’s brand is being a victim – poor St. Sarah the Persecuted. All those big, rich, smarty-pants, fake American Washington types are against her, along with their fellow travelers in the lamestream media. See, they even ganged up on poor Joe Miller, man of the people, not because he’s a wingnut – just to get Sarah. Now, this might not be the smartest move in a strictly political sense but it sure is going to help sell a bunch more books – and money is what this is all about. Now, I’ll agree with you that Miller beating Murkowski and then losing to a liberal from Sitka would send Sarah back to another rehab in Hawaii, although even in that case the victim card would probably buy her a bunch of Neilson points on her reality show. I think Sarah is banking on outcome number one, Murkowski winning. That’s a pretty good bet on Palin’s part – Murkowski has millions in the bank she hasn’t even touched yet. If she loses to a nobody like Miller, she will show herself to be the most inept campaigner short of …. well, Frank Murkowski. I think the key will be to see if Palin starts to personally campaign on MIller’s behalf. If she spends her time filming picnics with Kate Gosselin and sending out inane tweets, we’ll know that Miller went under the bus as just another prop to support Palin’s victimhood.

Thank you for your kind words. On the other hand, I think this discussion is a good illustration of why we political junkies are such a drag at dinner parties. We all try to parse out the various twists and turns but then I remember who we are dealing with. This is Sarah Palin, whose idea of the Big Picture is whether there will be bendy straws in her dressing room. Go ahead, say “Sarah Palin” and “insightful analysis” in the same sentence and try not to laugh. Can’t be done. Palin has demonstrated a million times that she doesn’t think. She reacts. Say what you will about Murkowski (and I have), Murkowski is everything Palin is not – educated, smart, respected by some. Even worse, Murkowski had the temerity to criticize the Queen when she quit and when she started hallucinating about death panels. Now, Good Old Boy and Yale Law graduate Joe Miller is running? With the Teabagger Seal of Approval? Against mean, smartypants Lisa? Of course, Sarah is going to endorse Joe. On the other hand, Sarah isn’t entirely dumb. She’s not going to actually do anything about trying to help Miller win. She’s forgotten about it and moved on to defending tax relief for millionaires. Miller, Murkowski and Alaska are somewhere in the rear-view mirror of her limo.

Most likely, the whole nation will yawn if Murkowski wins and in 6 months completely forget that there was a “controversy” up here in the first place. Sarah will aide and abet by playing smoke and mirrors, and before long nobody will even really care.

The worst scenario is if Miller does hit the grand slam, because his brand of crazy wont bring Palin or Alaska any real influence in D.C. Once he starts talking about dismantling the Dept of Education everyone will just roll their eyes, pat him on the head, and both sides of the aisle will ignore him. Thats a losing situation for Alaska as we will just have a dead weight Senator to deal with for 6 years, after decades of fighting to have a voice in national politics we will be stuck with the biggest lame duck politician in state history.

Uncharacteristically, I watched Hardball tonight (I am not a big Chris Matthews fan) and glad I did.

He opened his show doing a number on Sharron Angle and Sarah Palin and how they expect the media to do their bidding. He wasn’t impressed. In fact, I think he thought both were idiots (easy decision, really).

Then he closed his show with a Let Me Finish Segment wherein he began with ” . . . the three scariest words in the English language are: President Sarah Palin,” and then laid out a nightmare scenario which favors Palin. It was truly obvious that he doesn’t think Sarah is fit for the job. However, we all need to pay attention to his analysis because it is feasible if you accept his basic assumptions or think them even possible. I recommend these two “moments” on Hardball – perhaps they will be available on MSNBC or YouTube.

BTW, I am inclined to support AKM’s analysis of Palin’s poor choices as discussed in her post above. I understand the variations discussed, but I think Sarah is still going to look badly in AK after your primary.

Oh – I also wanted to post some information about what I found out when my husband and I went to vote in our KS primary.

In our precinct, we have 600 registered voters (which is not a good percentage of the people who actually are eligible to vote here in a suburban KC-metro bedroom community which is a large population center in KS). By noon, only 30 people have voted. The polls opened at 7 a.m. I can only hope people showed up after work and before the 7 p.m. closing.

As Democrats, we had choices to make regarding: several candidates for US Senate, US Representative for our District, Secretary of State, and County Commissioners; Democrats did not field candidates for a couple of offices and had only one choice for several others. So, this was a fairly serious deal. To have so few show up in our precinct is discouraging.

Our high schools have graduation rates around 98 percent, we have one of the highest per capita rates of college grads, and our per capita income is very healthy. Why so few get involved in political matters is truly puzzling. Sigh.

As a citizen candidate who is working to unseat a commercial politician, I fully appreciate the courage and determination needed to put your name behind truths that many dare not speak.

There is no doubt that the melodrama between the Murkowski family and Sarah Palin makes a for compelling story, as such has all the necessary elements of soap opera miniseries. I am sure we have not seen or heard the last of it in Alaska. Of course, framing a vision for a shared future in our state and nation is the real matter at hand, and I believe the careers of our Senator and the former Governor are emblematic of larger issues that threaten the future of our Republic.

I used to think that campaign finance reform was one of many important issues. As a candidate for federal office who has studied the behavior of a corporately sponsored opponent, I am now convinced that campaign finance in it’s current state is the rotten and cracked foundation that needs to be replaced before we can remodel our government. While I still believe that we are a principled people fully capable of embracing our civic inheritance of “self evident truths” and “inalienable rights” to build a more perfect union, I am here to report to report to the Mudflats that elections in America have been reduced to money and polls. Until we have reform, WE will continue to require that our politicians behave like telemarketers and used car salesmen to get elected. Lisa Murkowski is an otherwise talented, articulate person who is a product of her environment, and her perceived need to first and foremost defend her corporate donors and political caucus on the floor of the U.S. Senate diminishes us all.

In my mind, the Sarah Palin story is a case for better civics education. Her habit of reducing the complexity of any issue to a 140 characters in an increasingly complicated world would dumbfound the Founding Fathers she claims to represent. Can you imagine reducing the preamble to the Constitution to a twitter feed? Can you imagine replacing the Federalist Papers with a Facebook post? Sarah had no interest in the mechanics of governance when she was Governor, only the accouterments of fame that went with the office, and it is down right scary that she is the most famous woman in American politics. God help us.

Our campaign continues to grow one voter at a time. Our task is large, our challenge formidable, but I love this state and will continue to move a progressive vision through out the course of this election season.

    Best,
    Scott

Back to the bad old colonial days – before Statehood. JP Morgan and the Guggenheims have been replaced by foreign corporate logos. Greedy citizens and politicians now, are no different than greedy citizens and politicians then. We have regressed, rather than progressed.

Hey, all you folks from outside Alaska. McQuittyPants knows as much about grizzly bears as that other idiot, Timothy Treadwell.

McQuitty stupidly says that mama grizzlies stand on their hind legs to protect their cubs against Reed, Obama and Pelosi.

No……………..grizzlies stand on their hind legs to sniff the air for what may be around the pike. When they attack….it’s from a crouching position.

This is scientific proof that this idiot knows as much about grizzlies as she does about governing.

Now, who will join CREEP? ( Conservative REpublicans to Elect Palin President.) If you are in a youth group, add a “y” and it becomes….CREEPPY. Add an “s” and it becomes CREEPPS. Buttons could read, CREEPS FOR PALIN. ANOTHER CREEPP FOR PALIN. CREEPY.

The Palin endorsed candidate in the KS senate race lost yesterday. It was a nasty campaign run by the loser and reminded me of the “mean girl Sarah” comments in each commercial. Palin’s crystal ball wasn’t working in Kansas.

Palin just endorsed another long-shot Repub – Brian Murphy – for Governor of Maryland. Polls reportedly have Murphy barely registering but there is apparently some dissatisfaction with presumed nominee, incumbent Robert Ehrlich. (Any Maryland Mudflatters with the scoop?) However, Palin again makes her endorsement in a relatively low effort, low risk way – by Facebook. So far, she isn’t actually campaigning for anyone and from her last PAC report, she isn’t spending any money to support her endorsements. This might change, but I’m thinking this is just Palin becoming impulsively and momentarily fascinating with another shiny object.

Sarah is the consummate professional victim. Therefore, whatever she does, however it turns out, she wins!

    Waaaahhhhhh!!!!!!
