The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Alaska 2010 Primary Night Photo Album

I’m a little late on this one, but here are some pictures I took from Primary Night 2010 at Election Central in downtown Anchorage.

Democratic Lt. Governor nominee Diane Benson makes the march to election central with a throng of supporters.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate and State Senator Hollis French, and his wife Peggy

Surprise (probable) win of the night, Republican/Tea Party Senate candidate Joe Miller arrives.

Republican gubernatorial nominee Sean Parnell talks to KTUU Channel 2 News reporting live on the scene.

Democratic candidate for governor, Ethan Berkowitz arrives, flanked by supporters.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Walker had a surge of grassroots support, and all the momentum, but it wasn’t quite enough time to overtake Sean Parnell for the Republican nomination.

Republican gubernatorial hopeful Ralph Samuels.  He’s the one with the signs that promised if he was elected governor, he wouldn’t quit.

Republican candidate for Lt. Governor, former right wing radio host Eddie Burke.  One of his three security team members can be seen at left.

The Mudflats primary endorsed Republican candidate Bob Lynn.  We don’t agree with him, but a Republican with integrity is like an endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale.  They need to be saved.

Awesome Democrat Harry Crawford, running for U.S. Congress gives an interview to Alaska Public Radio.  Give ‘em Hell Harry!

And equally awesome support staff – the Crawford family – Gwen, Andrew and Trevor.

Peggy Wilcox of the No On One campaign.  Alaskans did vote no on one!  Phew…  Score one for free speech.

The other ballot measure passed, however, requiring all girls seventeen years and younger to have their parents notified if they seek an abortion.  Doctors face felony charges if they don’t follow contact procedures properly.  Republican candidates including Joe Miller supported this measure.  Its constitutionality is in question.

Rep. Les Gara (D) watches returns come in.

Joe Miller number crunchers watch the returns come in to the division of elections website.

Mystery solved! This Cathy Giessel supporter (Senate district P) tells us that “Mr. Tooth Decay’s real name is Communism.”  Can’t wait to tell my dentist.

In February, when I was in Anchorage, I met a legend. Mr. Whitekeys. Is that Mr. Whitekeys in the picture with Diane Benson?

No, it isn’t, but Mr. Whitekeys was at election central. For some reason I didn’t get a picture…

That damn Communism sure found out another way to get us! And we thought we were free of it! It was here all along. WOW I feel enlightened.

OK, I understood all of it but the Mr. Tooth Decay. What’s that all about? Oh, yeah, we probably don’t really want to know.

Enjoyed the pictures. Alaskans are a really diverse bunch, aren’t they? And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Lol! Ralph Samuels is running on a promise that he won’t quit? Gotta love that.
Did Eddie Burke pull a gun at this event? ;)

That little girl in the front of the Diane Benson march is just too cute for words. LOVE the pigtails and how she’s holding the sign that’s almost as big as she is!

Berkowitz wins the Best Dressed Male award by a mile – is that a great tie/shirt combo, or what? And the suit actually looks tailored! Gasp!

All the other guys remind me of why it’s so easy to recognize the Alaska Airlines gates at the SeaTac airport without even having to look at the signs.

Apparently the result of years spent in the Intermountain West [I've been to Rawlings!], the first person I thought of upon seeing the Miller photo was:

My excuse is that it’s pretty hard to erase from memory a cattle rustler who got turned into a pair of shoes.

The Mr. Whitekeys look-a-like is the one and only, fabulous volunteer extraordinaire Mr. Ed Haukula! I am so glad he finally won one!

Please enlighten us re: Mr.Tooth Decay’s real name is communism. I must not be very good with the googles because the only reference I could find is this post.

Could it have anything to do with the John Birch Society rant against fluoride in the water? It’s still one of the big issues from these guys.

Picture of Diane with her varied retinue is perfect – very much in keeping with her interests in supporting the people of Alaska – all of them.

The peeps with Joe Miller (the women wearing the head scarves, long dresses and uncut hair) were from a ‘nondenominational’ Christian group out of Palmer. …. hum…
