Voices from the Flats – Last Man Flying
There have been a lot of plane crashes in Alaska in the last few weeks. A C-17 crashed at Elmendorf Air Force Base killing all four on board. A C-17 crashed in Denali Park killing another three. A flight crashed outside Dillingham killing Alaska political giant former Senator Ted Stevens and four others. And then [...]
Welcome to the Idiocracy! The Enemies List of the Far Right.
Ever wonder what the other half is thinking? Recently 100 right wing bloggers were asked a question. “Out of all the gangsters, serial killers, mass murderers, incompetent & crooked politicians, spies, traitors, and ultra left-wing kooks in all of American history — have you ever wondered who the worst of the worst was?” And then [...]
Open Thread – Nice Rack!
I opened my front door this morning and spotted this guy – the biggest moose I’ve seen in a long time! I’d love to be around when he drops his antlers. They’re quite something.
Voices from the Flats – Uncle Ted is Dead
Ted Stevens and the Exploitation of Alaska Uncle Ted is Dead By STEVE CONN Alaska’s version of the Soviet’s Uncle Joe, our Uncle Ted, is dead. The wheel of fate rolled over him. He had survived dangerous air missions in World War Two, those “Over the Hump.” He had [...]
Open Thread – Home Sweet Home
It’s official. It’s been the rainiest summer on record in Alaska. It makes me feel a little better about the fact I left for a couple weeks. Normally, planning an out of state vacation during the brief (and usually glorious) Alaskan summer is met with raised eyebrows, and little chuckles. Staying in Alaska over the [...]
“Doctor” Laura’s tirade–racism, pathology or both?
The blogosphere and cable television exploded yesterday over Laura Schlessinger’s August 10th radio program, where she repeated the “n-word” 11 times on the air. Here is the entire exchange with the African American caller rather than the abbreviated versions heard on the cable news networks: Media Matters also has the entire transcript on their website. I know that [...]
Voices from the Flats – Geoffrey Dunn
One wonders how much gall Sarah Palin can muster in the face of yet another Alaska tragedy. In the aftermath of the fatal plane crash in rugged western Alaska that took the lives of former U.S. Senator Ted Stevens and four others earlier this week, Palin described Stevens to her sycophantic Fox News colleague Greta [...]
Homer Town Hero
Joseph Lapp II has posted his take on the Homer News. Kathleen Gustafson: a real hero After Kathleen Gustafson raised a banner above the docks saying “World’s Worst Governor” during Sarah Palin’s visit to Homer, she became the object of a great deal of scorn and vitriol all across the Internet. Kathleen’s bravery, her unwillingness [...]
Open Thread – Friends
In Alaska, and other areas where wild salmon play a role in the local economy and the local diet, there is a saying – Friends don’t let friends eat farmed fish. So, as a friend I’m telling you… If you ever see this sign or anything like it in your local fish market – run. [...]
Real Alaska And Natural Causes
~The wreckage from the plane crash Ted Stevens survived in 1978. I wrote a thank you note to Rachel after watching this coverage. There is so much unable to explain about Alaska. It’s why I have a T.I.A moment every day. This. Is. Alaska. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it rips your guts out. For many [...]
Open Thread – Tide Line
Nothing is quite so fascinating as walking the high tide line to see what’s out there that’s gotten deposited on the shore.
Open Thread – Oscar
Just as Mudflatters have come to know and love Brian the Moose (who is really more of an idea of a moose than a single animal), I used to feel the same way about Oscar the seagull. Oscar was first pointed out to me by my sister. I’m glad that she was observant enough to [...]
Oyster Roundup!
~Thick and fast they came at last and more, and more and more! Here’s the roundup of all the things I’d be blogging about if I wasn’t trying to be on vacation! Mayor Johnston? Levi Johnston is running for mayor of Wasilla. Yes, he is. And it will be done via reality show, so you’ll [...]
Ted Stevens and Four Others Killed in Plane Crash Outside Dillingham
It’s been a strange night as Alaskans have waited for confirmation. A small plane was reported down about 20 miles north of Dillingham, Alaska – about 325 miles Southwest of Anchorage. The wreckage spotted by another plane. Rumors circulated for hours, and it’s just been confirmed that 86-year old former Senator Ted Stevens was on [...]
